Favoured Enemy? How to RP this?

Post subject:  Favoured Enemy? How to RP this?
On Budly, I have Favoured enemy undead and outsiders.

First I wonder, how to RP this? Are the rangers (or Harper Scout?) experts on these two groups? Are they only good at "expertly" killing them or knowledge too? Is it just a inherent bonus against unnatural beings on some kind of divine or arcane level where they draw power from nature?

Also. What do consist in these groups? Is it all undead from a undead mice to a grim reaper or whatever the equal thing to it is in DnD? Do undead gods count? :P And outsiders? From what I understand all demons are also outsiders but what else counts in to this? Is a Djinn an outsider? Is all the other odd races from other planes outsiders? What counts as an outsider? Only those from the lower planes? Bhaator, Abyss and so on?

I never really thought much about it but now I was looking over my favoured enemies and thought....how the hell do I RP this? How far can one go to RP and such was what came to mind so I make this thread about it. Mayhaps it could be just a question post in the question thread but I thought it could use a thread of it's own.

While you can pretty much roleplay it how you think best, one way is to say you have special training toward that enemy type. This explains the extras you get toward them, such as spot, and not just the "ikillu" stuff. It opens doors for roleplaying gaining new FE's too, as you can find experts on those creatures or something and go from there.

In my opinion, if you look at the bonuses granted with the feat, it means a ranger is more skilled at finding, tracking, and destroying their favored enemies. They are chosen, so the ranger has taken more time to know, and understand, those particular enemies a bit better than others, and they spend more time fighting them, so they're better at it.

I like making models, planes, autos, ships, etc., but I prefer autos (muscle cars), so my Favored Model is Automobiles. Meaning I'm a bit better at them, over the rest, because of my knowledge of them, and my experience in making those particular types of models.

So, you can go about this fairly fluidly, so however one thinks it's best.

You can say, take the description from the Player's Handbook about Favored Enemy that says "Due to his extensive study of his chosen type of foe and the training in the proper techniques for combating such creatures.." From the handbook and use intense study and training for the FE. Or, I do a mixture of this and some racial and religious RP reasons for my main character Elrith, whom is a Ranger. I will give an example:

Elrith is an elf, Ranger, of Mielikki. Due to racial reasons, she has FE against Orcs, who are not only natural enemies as a race for many years, but they can also be fairly destructive when it comes to natural lands. Thinking outside of the box she even has Elf as a FE, not because she would kill or have a specialty against her own race, but also because Drow are, technically and mechanically, Elves, and she doesn't like most Drow either as a typical elf, and they have known to raid the surface, so she will of course learn how to combat against those dirty Drow :P Undead are also part of her list of Favored Enemies, being a follower of Mielikki, so undead are an affront to balance, that and she frequents on an undead infested island so it would make sense if she learns how to specialize against something not only she sees on a daily basis, but is part of her ways in religion as well. You get the idea.

As far as what they consist, it's any undead for the undead FE, clearly not deities because they are in a different category all together.. they're.. deities. And as far as I am aware if it's not from your plane or if it's related to a planar, it's an outsider. But I'm not an expert on planars so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks! Sounds interesting.

Just curious how to explain why Budly got outsiders. But then he had some weird run ins with tieflings and such before.

It's largely personal experience and choice, if he's had run-ins like you said... that's enough I think, to want to learn more about how to detect, fight and defend against them.

Well he did come under the influence of a succubus once, which later got retconned to a tiefling...and well Erinyes too. So now when I think of it, he kinda had bad experiences too!

Crow and Elrith explained favored enemy pretty excellently. In some cases I also RP ancestral hatred like dwarves vs giants.
