A few years of neglect have finally taken their toll. I need to do a lot of maintenance the coming weeks. Expect some down time now and then.

Alright. I will post this here so we are all responsible if we miss something important.

I want to clean up the servervault. If you don't know what that is, stop reading and don't comment.

The servervault is currently 10 gig and godknowshowmany files big. I suspect it to be a strain on the nwn server. So I want to purge it(after I made a backup).

I will do this:

1. Move all files that are at least 1 year old from the servervault into an archive.
2. Go to the archive and delete all files that are smaller than 100 Kb (characters that only have a few items and levels).
3. Remove all directories from the archive and vault that have no .bic files in them.

This should do no harm to current players and established characters that haven't been played for a while. At least, if I didn't miss anything important. Right?

Sounds good Disco.

Anyone who hasnt played long enough for their barely leveled character to be trashed probably isn't coming back.

Post subject:  Re: Some server issues

Would it help if people want characters deleting out of their vault? I know people have asked in the past and always been told amia archives and doesn't delete but this sounds like a chance to wave good bye to characters you don't want lingering and also help the server.

If you're archiving the vault anyway there is the possible, if outside chance, of reviving a long dead and deleted character.

I don't mind deleting a few characters by hand, but this is about a massive, automated purge involving at least 15.000 accounts and 100.000 files.

I guess if there is huge concern, a possibility would be that I, or someone else, makes a save on an external drive. I mean 10 GB easily fits on a USB_Stick.

I mean if someone wants to keep an old chara they barely played, this is solved quick. Log on briefly, save chara, log out.

When you say a year old, I assume you mean over a year since they were last changed, not over a year since they were created, right?

If your PC is in epic levels and/or has a ton of items, you will be save. For comparison, I checked on an only briefly played 17th level wizard of mine who only had a small handful of items and his file size was already at 91kb, my 24th level paladin in comparison is 180 kb big. (And in case someone reads this who hasn't read the rest of the thread: If you have logged onto your PC in the last year they will be save as well)

Is there a way for players to be able to save their characters themselves? Or does it all have to be done on the computer running the server?

Author:  Gravemaskin [ Thu, Sep 07 2017, 13:39 PM ]
Post subject:  Re: Some server issues

Log on to the character, hit R and pick "save your character". It should be option number 2 on the rest menu.
I did this with everyone I wanted to be 100% sure I kept, though I'm fairly certain the server also saves your char when you log off automatically.

And I think we should take this topic to give praise to His Royal Majesty Chicken I of Amia, first of his name, Duke of Hosting, Earl of Roleplay, and Prince of Dedication.
He hasn't played for years, but has nevertheless maintained the server, done background work, dedicated his own free time and paid out of his own pocket to keep the server going. It shows a dedication I think few of us around here could mirror and it's greatly appreciated by all of us who love and enjoy the server!

(And perhaps for all of us to consider hitting the Subscribe button and give a 5 buck subscription to keep the server going. After all, it's 5 bucks cheaper than following some twitch streamer dude)

Post subject:  Re: Some server issues

I have purged the lot. If you miss anything of value in your vault or archive: I made backups.

Just because I like numbers...

This morning
The vault: 10 gig with 120000 characters in 18000 accounts
The archive: 4 gig with 63000 characters in 20000 accounts

Now
The vault: 1.6 gig with 10000 characters in 1600 accounts
The archive: 6 gig with 32000 characters in 6500 accounts

That should make a difference.

If you played them for a while they are in the archive. You can collect them from ingame, although I don't know how.

/s f_file

Choose archive in the menu that pops up
unarchive them and they get moved to your vault

You can do this to "clean" up your vault too, bym oving others into teh archive.

Just noting that while my archive is lovely and clean, I noticed that the Amia Player Tools link in the sidebar still shows everything it did before when you click on the "characters" link. Is that eventually going to reflect the purge?

Dunno... I vaguely remember that coming from entries in the database, and those know nothing of your vault.

If I recall right I never used the Arquives and ive got character's deleted from the Server Vault. They do not show on the character selection screen but what maglorine said is also happening to me.

All the characters there were once on the Server Vault are still showing on the Playertools.

You don't have to have used the archives to have gotten characters archived! If they were at least around level 18-19 (not 100% sure what the cut off point is filesize-wise) and had a good chunk of items, they are probably just in the archive.

Yeah. I realise I made a mistake. I also purged small files that are less than a year old. Considering the amount of active players and the speed you can level up here, I doubt many people are affected, but if you miss anything, just PM me.

In that case he is likely just in the archive, you can bring that up ingame via /s f_file

Instead of making a new post somewhere I thought I'd just ask here. The thing is that back in like 2009 i played a character named Vrok Silver, of the Eternal Order. At some point he disappeared from my vault and wasn't in my archive. I made a request about this but whoever was looking for him couldn't find him. Now he have showed up when I check my characters in the player tools so I was wondering if maybe he can be brought back?

So how would one go about getting there characters back from this backup?

I have kind of a long list of characters that I played years ago and was just returning.

Sionin Alverith
Mar'ves Di'tur
Faust Tel'indes

These are kind of the major ones but there were several other's that I would get onto occasionally as well.

My in-game ID is Velsin_Silvadon

Post subject:  Re: Missing a character? I may have purged it.

Did you try the in-game unarchiver first? Type "/s f_file ?" in the chat box (without the quotes) and check the archive there in the dialogue that pops up. Disco's purge shouldn't have affected any characters over a particular file size, and chances are if it was a character with more than 10 levels and the appropriate gear for that level, its file size was too big to be purged.

Post subject:  Re: Missing a character? I may have purged it.

I did but Ive been gone for many years...

I was the founding member of the War Knights (Knights of Tempus) and seeing Callus had died actually made me cry since I havent been on in years...

I played Sionin... he was the first Champion of the Red Knight... I was forced to the red knight after the GM's said Nebessa would never be accepted as a deity in Amia...

I had Sio leave the defenders after becoming the commander to found the War Knights... back when he was a follower of the red knight.. then he hurt a girl that he cared about in the Elistreaan Temple and it caused his fall to Garagose... he was the first Garagosian in Amia.

Broken, damaged, having led two war groups in the world, Sio found Garagos....

It was a fun story that I still love... there is a lot more too it I can tell but those are the main points... We'll leave out the fact that he was a Drow hunter and fell in love with a drow woman whome he killed for...

Is it possible while you're at it to give Velsin's characters a zimmer frame? They're old enough to be studied in a history text book.
