In the dead of night, the Castellan's carpentry seems to have taken a macabre twist. A small, raised, circular platform is build on the center dais in the courtyard, neatly straddling the flickering red rune. In the center of the platform, affixed to a sturdy pivoting joint, is a sharpened stake, some dozen feet long and sanded smooth till the wood gleams in the courtyard's eerie light. A chain connects the stake to a winch attached to the circular base, presumably to assist in lofting the stake upright. On either side of the stake are another two winches, with a single manacle at the end of each of their chains. A tiny glass jewelry box rests on a pedestal near the stake, with a simple ring of healing visible inside. |
