Ive been pondering on creating an air genasi recently but Im having a slight difficulty with pinpointing her ancestry.
In resources as Monster Manual 2 Ive read about the Immoth race, which are icy giants and originate from "Coldest regions of Plane of Air and Water" which would basicly make it the Paraelemental plane of ice.

My question is how canon would it be to give my air genasi an Immoth for a great-great-great-great-great-etc grandfather?

Well para-genasi have been put forward in Dragon Magazine 297 and describes ice genasi. So in theory it should be possible to substitute those with the current genasi classes.

I have two points that don't seem to add up however. One is the Immoth race itself. In the Monster Manual 2 it says it is not known how or even whether immoths reproduce. Chances of having an immoth heritage seem very low, so this would be a most rare individual.

Next is the choice for an air genasi as base subsitute. They do indeed share wanderlust as a trait with Immoths. However, looking at the stat bonuses, air genasi get "+2 Intelligence, +2 Dexterity, -2 Wisdom, -2 Charisma ". Immoths having scores of 18/16/19/14/13/21 and thus a focus in charisma, strength and consitution.
If we also look at the ice para-genasi they get "+4 Constitution, +2 Wisdom, -2 dex, -2 cha". Both the ice para-genasi and the immoth stats seem to be disaligned with the air genasi template we have. However water genasi gain "+2 Constitution, -2 Charisma" which makes them, in my opinion, far better suited as a base template. They also gain the ice storm spell ability which also happens to be an ice spell.

So all in all it seems like a very interesting concept to base a character on with lots of rp possibilities but I also think it would require a really good request to convince the DM's.

Yeah thought so too, the only probelm I have right now is which elemental would be best suitable for an air genasi bloodline outside of the djinn family tree.

I think sylph ancestors can produce genasi but I'm not completely certain nor do I know where I heard it.

On a related note, it says in the subraces bit and implied in other places that actual Elementals (specifically water, air and fire are mentioned in the subraces section, though not earth oddly) can produce genasi descendents. ...Given that, as far as I know, elementals don't have reproductive biology (or much biology at all, though I think they can be subject to sneak attacks?), how does this work? Or am I misinterpreting? If I'm not and it does work... some sort of elemental radiation effect I guess..?

I went through the Monster Manuals (1-5) and distilled those creatures that might be origins for air genasi either by being an airlike elemental or an outsider from the air type:
Outsider (Air):
Arrowhawk, Djinni, Mephit(Air; Dust; Ice), Sylph
Elemental (Air):
Belker, Invisible Stalker, , Breathdrinker, Air Weird, Immoth, Storm Elemental

Other sources might give more possibilities.

If you can believe the book of erotic fantasy (curse you for making me look into it, it's scary) elementals (Huge, above 16HD) sometimes just happen to merge with each other. This can cause a part to break of and form a small elemental. And in rare instances they merge with another creature, creating a half-elemental.

The Manual of the planes speaks of unions between creatures and elementals or fusions caused by magic; often at child birth and with the aid of strange and distasteful rituals). These half-elementals in turn can start a bloodline that breeds genasi.

Book of Erotic Fantasy isn't an official product.

No, you aren't! I bet you're totally devastated! D:

That said... >.> How about that thing Tormak mentioned so we don't have Book of Erotic Fantasy being cited in the Lore thread in the future?

I was actually thinking something more in the Ildriss direction since its more air oriented but Im stuck with the mating issue as well.
No book specifies on it, although I know that true elementals cant mate with humans, yet any other variation of genasi can and genasexgenasi can only conceive a child if theyre of the same element.

Then theres still a question, how did the first genasi get made, and if you say half-elemental, then how did the half-elemental get created?

A unborn child could be a Genasi when born if they have long enough exposure to the plane in question as well.

I'd love to know where it talks about this. It sounds interesting.

That's one of the main ways planar-touched creatures are born in general. Pregnant mother spends too much time on a different plane, boom, you have a plane-touched baby.

Races of Faerûn only talks about unions between actual beings to produce Planetouched, not pregnancy-infusion from the magic/influence of a Plane itself. I'm fairly certain this is echoed in other entries about Planetouched, and don't recall reading about this before, so I'm guessing it's in a supplement like Dragon Magazine or tucked away in some book line Planar Handbook?

From what I recall, pretty much anything with an elemental subtype and the proper anatomy can create genasi offspring down the road. This also includes dragons, IIRC, which would probably be the most likely candidate for granting genasi heritage next to a genie. Certainly far more likely than an immoth.

I assume you're responding to the thread of question before this little turn, Gers. But just in case it's not clear for others,

That's what the latest question is about.

X creatures breeds with x creature and produces x planetouched is very straight-forward and mentioned all over. In fact, that's ALL I recall reading; that it's something produced between creatures. Celestial bloodline, fiendish heritage, elemental ancestor, etc.

But this "plane itself + non-planetouched creature = planetouched offspring" I don't recall hearing about and I can't think of where it would be. I just skimmed through Planar Handbook and it couldn't find mention of it. I've sort of assumed that it's possible (although I didn't figure it would be the primary way planetouched are made, things in Faerûn love their interbreeding) but not actually read it being the case.

It's Planescape lore, I'm pretty sure. Races of Faerûn pretty much wrecked the Planetouched. I'll see if I can find the Genasi lore in some PS product.

Didn't find it in the book I have, but there's another basic Planescape book that probably covers the races, I think. Gonna keep an eye out.

But I did find what I'd read before, the Roaming Genasi Tavern. I can't quite figure out if it's homebrew or not, I think it's gleaned from Dragon Magazine, official products and discussions of the players and designers. It captures the spirit of the planes and Genasi perfectly IMO, so I recommend it for inspiration even if we fail to verify it.

http://users.erols.com/aburner/planescape/

Here's what it says about the origins of Genasi:
Quote:
If you ask someone how the Planetouched got that way, most folk will tell you that it's due to their anscestry. If you go back far enough in a Tiefling's family tree, they say, you'll find that one of their anscestors was a Baatezu or a Yugoloth or some other kind of lower planar creature. Likewise, if you go back far enough in an Air Genasi's family tree, you'll find that one of their anscestors was a native of the Elemental Plane of Air, such as a Djinn. And sure enough, that's the most common way to become Planetouched.

But that ain't the only way...

Each one of the Inner and Outer Planes has permanent settlements in it. No matter how deadly a plane might be, you can count on there being at least a few permanent residences there. It might be a huge metropolis like the City of Brass, or it might be a town like Madhouse on Pandemonium, or it might be a small citadel like the Dustmen's floating retreat on the Negative Energy Plane. Even the Plane of Vacuum has a few small settlements of barmy sods who live there.

Each one of the Inner and Outer Planes also has a fundamental nature that pervades and suffuses every particle of every location within the plane. The Plane of Smoke, for example, isn't simply an infinitely big space filled with smoke. It's an infinitely big space filled with the idea of smoke. And while a basher living on the Plane of Smoke may be able to keep the smoke out of his kip with magic, there's no magic around that can keep out the idea of smoke. Because the idea of smoke is what the Plane is all about.

For those who have already been born, being constantly suffused with the fundamental nature of a plane doesn't have much effect. The process of being born tends to give a person a sense of self that's hard to change. Even babies fresh from the womb are already starting to define themselves on a very basic level. And once you start defining your sense of self like this, the fundamental nature of the plane you're living on won't have much affect on you.

On the other hand, children who are still developing in the womb don't have this sense of self. As a consequence, it's possible for a child to literally be touched by the plane while developing in the womb. Humans are more likely than any other race to have this happen, but it can happen to any race. And even for humans, it's a rare occurrence -- the overwhelming majority of the folks born on the planes are of the same race as their parents, and show no signs of being Planetouched. But every so often, two otherwise normal parents will produce a Planetouched child. That's just the way of the Planes.
