Got an interesting issue:

Over the time I was away I did a number of Windows updates, and Driver updates for the video card , unfortunately now:

As a result.. my current situation won't let NWN start up at all.

I have in the comp an Asus EAH6850, though the current display adapter which appears on the Device Manager is an AMD Radeon HD 6800 series.

When I start NWN it just locks after the loader, when NWN itself is up before the movie.

The rolled back drivers I tried rolling back to, allowed me to play NWN but it goes into a Black screen or White screen after a time.

Please help! >.<;
((Of note" I'm on Windows Vista))

Can you describe what exactly happens if you launch NWN through the game shortcut, and not the launcher?

This is going to sound bad, can you be more specific please?

When I try to launch it now, it opens a window for NWN after selecting play, but it freezes up and doesn't do anything. I am able to force-close it though it says it stops responding in Windows so.. >.<;

If it gives you an error message, copy/paste it to here so we can get a look.

It doesn't now.

Originally, It had been giving me a LoadLibrary error 162 message, but I followed some advice I found online copying an atigxx(something like that file) in the command prompt.

All it does is opens the window, and has a black screen that's what I'd see right before it goes into the logos.

Use NWMain.exe from your NWN folder, rather than the launcher. Then describe what happens. From what I hear through, it sounds like a common graphics driver issue. Unfortunately, NWN's support on graphics drivers is intermittent, and generally better on older drivers. It's tedious, but you might have to just try different drivers till one works.

Also, you mentioned Vista and windows updates. It's possible you might have to double check to make sure NWMain.exe is running in administrator and compatibility mode by right-clicking and going into it's properties.

It immediately says 'Neverwinter Nights has stopped working' etc. etc.

Just tried running NWMain though in Windows compability mode and so far it's letting me in. Giving it a bit to see what happens.

Seems it's decided to start giving me heck again. >.<;

Soon as I run it through NWMain, EVEN in compatability mode, it immediately stops working and gives the standard Vista (This program has stopped running,) , jazz.

FML.

And, putzing around I managed to get it to work again. Before I go to bed after logging, I'll try to get back into it.

... Okay, when I hit 'Exit' in NWN, (From it's main menu) it actually gave the "Neverwinter Nights has stopped working" error.

I'm not entirely sure this is the case but I do remember this thread that mentioned a certain version of the video card driver was causing NWN to stop working. Perhaps this is the case for you as well.

Yeah, I had the problem in that thread too, and had to roll back my video card drivers to ...uh 12.1, I think it is. Is ASUS an AMD card? The 6850 looks like an AMD number (Mine is 6670). I'd suggest uninstalling the updated drivers and reinstalling version 12.1.

Could it be a file/folder permissions issue?

Not as likely, I am careful to ensure I run it as an Admin all the time.

And do you know how I'd go back to 12.1 on Vista specifically?

Well, I use XP....but I can't imagine its too different. You have to uninstall your current drivers first (I think you can just uninstall AMD Catalyst from your add/remove bit to do that), then restart, download and install 12.1

http://downloads.guru3d.com/AMD-Catalys ... -2845.html
http://downloads.guru3d.com/AMD-Catalys ... -2846.html

(Which one of these depends on your version of windows. 32 bit or 64. You can probably go ahead and download one now before you start messing)

I'm not entirely sure what the issue is but I gather version 12.2 fiddled with something that fucked up NWN. I was doing the same thing as you were a little while ago, arsing about with the atioglxx.dll....but this is what worked for me.

Only thing which wearies me on that, is without video drivers will I still be able to operate the computer in order to make it work. >.>;

((Yes, I may be sounding computer ignorant but it's more a small amount of paranoia on my part))

Oh, aye you will. You'll merely be lacking 3D acceleration support, but you will easily be able to log into Windows and install a new set of drivers.

Alright. I'll give it a shot when I get home from my workout.

Only question is, do i uninstall from Add/remove or from the Device Manager? ((It looks like it could be done both ways))

Either way works. I usually use Add/remove and then snoop through the registries to remove all traces of the old drivers, but I'm pretty sure you'll be fine without doing that.

Alright, I'll use the Add/remove method, and hope to god I don't completely fark it up.

Attempted to use the uninstall Driver method, and when the reboot completed it auto-detected the AMD 6800 Series drivers. *growls*

Yeah, it will do that. Realise whats installed. But it won't automatically download the latest drivers, I don't think. You can run the 12.1 installer from that point.

I'd tried.

The installer refused to work ((Something about a lack of a proper AMD device present))

If it doesn't, you may want to try to use System Restore to a point before you updated your driver? I think that might work.

This may seem silly, but try disabling desktop composition. Its in the compatibility settings tab after right clicking a shortcut and hitting properties.
