The difference between 29 Sorc/ 1 Rogue and 29 Sorc/ 1 Ranger in roleplay terms is near nothing.

Yes, a pure monk build is a fairly poor choice. Mays as well just take 5-10 monk levels as a drow and then multiclass. It's unfortunate pure monks have no decent benefit at higher levels. It's no wonder I almost never see monks on amia.

Don't think I saw this answered but yeah, in most cases if it's not mentioned otherwise subrace gets all the base race goodies, except of course ability mods.

The subraces that lose the racial bonuses of their original base race will say so specifically in the description of their new subracial abilities. (See the goblin and kobold descriptions, for example.)

That's what I wasn't sure about, thanks!

Not sure is serious or trolling.

That said, why are people saying high level monks have no benefit? The have a huge benefit named: being a monk. Monks are awesome.

just hit level 10 on my shifter and Im wondering

Should I go 5 Fighter or 5 Rogue as the third class?

Im thinking of 20 Shifter anyway but would there be any benefits I could reap from thinking of somethign different?

I sort of want a heavily shifty-empasis :P

Well, fighter would award you some spare feats as well as some fancy AB. With the fighter, your Melee forms will be much more feasible.

Rogue is pretty nice if you've got a hefty amount of intelligence, and you're trying to go the Skills/Tanky/Caster-support shifter route. However, I wouldn't really recommend taking 5 levels of it. Especially if you've chosen a Nature god. In that case, hit more Druid levels and take 1-2 Rogue levels.

Furthermore, 20 Shifter, while neat for RP purposes or dedication, has little benefit from 19 Shifter and some kind of skill dump/feat class.

My best suggestion, for a rather fun, versatile PC, would be 5 Master scout, if you can squeeze in the two required feats. You'll get Discipline, Tumble, epic traps, Hide/MS and two feats. One level should be taken in the Epic levels for various dumps and an epic feat. You won't be able to use all of your items in your forms, save for your Thousand Faces Forms. But all you need to do is unshift, navigate, and suddenly you've got a dangerous repertoire of abilities. With a little preparation, he'd make for a tough opponent. And those damage potions would make for some extra kick to your forms.

Oh, and if you took the 6th level of druid at level 20, you could throw in some spellcraft too.

It seems I made a mistake on building my current toon Mikal. He's paladin 23/CoT 5/ monk1 aasimar-great smiting build. It seems I don't need 23 levels on paladin, but instead 20/8 CoT and not 5 would do much better: = 1 extra epic feat.

So I have two questions for you:

First: Am I right about the extra feat ? I mean, 23/5/1 would get me 6 feats overall and 20/8/1 would be 7.
Second: Is there a significative different between 23 paladin and 20 paladin ?

I'm in middle if this character build right now. It's pretty darn cool I won't lie.

I need suggestions for a dwarf build. I ahve wanted to start a dwarf char for some time, but I really don't know what kind of class combination to go for. I would like something with traps and crossbows, but also something that can do stuff on his own. A dwarven Druid is tempting too, but I am unsure just how well that would go as he would be an indostrious dwarf too. I guess that I really don't want to be another dwarven fighter/DwD type.

Any suggestions for what could be a fun and interesting dwarven build that is not just a melee fighter?

dwarvern trapper? how about something like 10 fighter/18 assassin/2 rogue or something of the sorts. It's a versatile build, can go str based, dex based ect. Plenty of feats, enough Ab for a rogue type and enough skill points to get your discipline, trap skills, and hide/ms

Yes, 1 more feat. You'd also get +2 Saves from Sacred Defence.

Missing those 3 Paladin levels will cost you on your Dispel Checks and your spell durations somewhat. But I think the biggest difference will be that it will knock your Divine Favour down to a +4 Damage/AB effect.

That will cost my paladin a Dispel Check ? How come ? It's still low anyway (23 or 20). Also, 20 still gets +5. 18 would be +4

It can't be. It can only makes sense if it's +1 each 4 lvls.

reading the changes done to spells on the server might be a good idea when you're going to do a build. 21+ is needed for the +5 on divine favor

Speaking of Clerics. I'm currently rethinking my ranged Cleric (Orog, Throwing Axes, see below).

Old Plan(TM) was Cleric 20 / Fighter 8 / Rogue 1.
This has 4 attacks, and gets the standard epic feats for fighterish builds: EWF, EWS, Armorskin, Epic Prowess. (But no caster feats or anything.) Then I realized that I probably have enough AB and AC, anyway.

So, I thought about switching to Cleric 23 / F 5 / Rogue 1 or Cleric 22 / F 6 / Rogues 1 with epic feats: EWF, EWS, EMD, Great WIS. It loses 1 hard AB, and 2 AC, but EMD should easily make up for that in damage output and tankiness, and the higher CL is also really helpful against dispelling.

The big problem is that my WIS is too low until Level 28 ...

Questions:
Can I still take EMD without WIS 20 on Amia? (I know that I cannot cast it until I get WIS 20.)

How bad are epic levels without Level 8/9 spells? As a cleric, my buffs are all in lower levels and I still get a few Heal/Greater Restoration/Mass Heal due to my domain, so I don't think I would be entirely useless. I would just be without usable summons for a really long time.

Any thoughts?
Ts

PS: Full disclosure

STR: 16, DEX: 7, CON: 14, INT: 16, WIS: 12 -> 19+1, CHA: 11
Zen Archery, Point Blank Shot, Called Shot, Blind Fight,
WF (Throwing Axe), WS,
Extend Spell, Max Spell, Silent Spell, Great Fortitude

Seems like I'm going for a druid. Ffolk, purely caster/zen archer druid unless the elemental shapes gives enough omph to hang in melee until dragonshape comes along.

I was thinking something like 28 druid/1 ranger/1 rogue with startings tats like this:
str 10
dex 11
con 12
Wis 19
int 12
cha 8

Pre epic feats would be atleast extend spell, maximise spell, zen archery, and SF/GSF in Evocation or conjuration. My dilemma is then whether to go for SF/GSf in both + KD or a savesy feat, or point blank shot, Rapid shot and KD/savesy feat. The first would give me both extended mummy dust and Dragon Knight, whiel the latter would make him better at ranged support.

Second, its the skills. Just how necessary is concentration if he hangs out in the back? I will get 6 skill points per level, and must atleast have spellcraft, AE, Spot and tumble. I would also very much like to have heal and craft armour or lore, but if concentration is absolutely necessary, I would have to slice those.

Concentration isnt an absolute must. Most of a druids spells are buffs. I would get it as a just in case type of deal like you are trying to cast that heal or something silly like that. I also think that you dont really need mummy dust and dragon knight unless you feel its essential for RP purposes. The mummy dust ALL of them are good enough to be used anywhere when buffed.

The very last point I would add is the elemental shapes are not really that good unless you are fighing things for 25 xp each. When you are fighting harder CL's things that are 5-6 levels high for you and raking in 60 xp (in good parties you are a druid your role is to buff anyway and heal), then you will get torn up.

Your ab wont be amazing. I say zen archery to take pot shots. It doesnt seem like much but when you have 30 wisdom at the end and now with the new "druid rage" you can get a decent little bit of ab, enough to hit just enough to matter with upgraded bullets or darts if you prefer to throw things.

Concentration is very, very helpful and will save you a lot of frustration, but if you absolutely cannot get it, I guess you can do without. I played a cleric without any concentration and lost way too many mass heals because of a stray arrow or some AoE killing my spell casting. Without any, a light breeze will interrupt your spell casting.

I ended up rebuilding and since then religiously include concentration in my skill set for casters.

No, that's a Bioware default. You need to have base 20 in your casting stat to take an epic spell. At least, I think it's a Bioware default. It should be, hah.

Not gonna lie, it sucks, especially since you are only going to have CL 12 for the first 20 levels, which means your spell duration is going to be awful. Resting more alleviates that, but still. Just mentioning it.

In vanilla NWN you can have a Cleric 21 with WIS 11 take EMD and cast it. Amia changed it so that Epic Spells require WIS 20 to cast. I just don't know if the requirements for the feats were also changed. I think not, but it would break the build if they were.

Well, I'd have CL 16 (at level 20) and then 20something. I just won't have the WIS to cast the higher spells.

Far as I know, it was changed. I can't say for 100%, but I highly doubt you can take epic spells without base 20 WIS.

Mm, I see, I was looking at ti wrong hah. CL 16 isn't bad, standard for any melee cleric and all that. CL 15 is the sweet spot for most of the good spells (turns/level) so your duration will be fine those next four levels. It's a pain, but not a big deal, went through it with my melee Lolthite.

I have never played a caster that got the epic spells, but from what I gather Mummy dust is more worth the investment than Dragon Knight? As a druid he would obviously go for the elemental and thus evocation, but if I remember correctly, the druid spell list has some pretty sexy conjuration spells too, like stonehold and storm of vengance?

Or is there another spell school for a druid that would be useful/cool? I am not convinced that PBS and Rapid shot are worth the feats as they are aviable on items, and are suplementary at best. Plan is to use a sling, and maybe bow after the ranger level. I know the damage won't be anywhere near awesome, but it's better than nothing.

I'd go both conj and evocation as a druid, though if you had to just chose one...then evocation is the way to go, most of your damaging spells are evo.

having looked at teh druid spell list, conjuration and evocation seem to be the most useful, yes. Also i forgot that I can take brew potion, craft wand or scribe scroll. Brew potion would be very in character for what i have in mind, but perhaps not the most useful aside from barkskin potions

Hey! Bothering y'all again, because that's how I am. Rebuilt my druid and I'm trying to see if there's any traps I've fallen into or fat to trim.

Water Genasi Druid of Silvanus
Druid 30 / Chaotic Neutral

Feats: Spell Focus (Evocation), Greater Spell Focus (Evocation), Extend Spell, Zen Archery, Spell Focus (Conjuration), Empower Spell, Maximize Spell

Epic Feats: Epic Spell (Mummy Dust), Epic Spell (Greater Ruin), Epic Spell Focus (Evocation), Great Wisdom 1/2/3

Str 12, Dex 10, Con 12, Int 12, Wis 18, Cha 8

Skills: Animal Empathy, Concentration, Spellcraft, Spot, Tumble (extra points go into Heal when reaching Tumble 15)

The focus for the character is full caster, using Zen Archery to shore up gaps between casting. I'm not actually sure how useful Animal Empathy is on this server, but it seems inappropriate for a druid of Silvanus to be without it.

So! Anything I should change/reconsider?

Water Genasi isn't a good race for that mechanically, but it doesn't hurt either.

A human genasi would have one more feat, I think. (First level bonus feat for humans.) But I never know if we are supposed to use those or if its that more of a bug of the subrace system.

You could consider dropping Empower, unless you have some Level 7 spell in mind that you absolutely want to enhance but can't maximize it. But the list already looks good, so you could add some general-purpose feats: Toughness, Luck of Heroes, Great Fortitude.

Xeorsos wrote:

Evocation is good and the list looks nice enough.

No complaints.

You will have about 7 left-over points as human water genasi. Might as well put them in Heal early on when it matters. (But count them first!)

Xeorsos wrote:
I'm not actually sure how useful Animal Empathy is on this server, but it seems inappropriate for a druid of Silvanus to be without it.

It's good, unless things have dramatically changed. Depending on where you are, you need to travel a bit to find a monster to dominate and then bring it to the party. I think, you can have your animal companion, a summon and the A/E dominee all at the same time, so a party of four even if you don't have any friends!

You could of course invest much more into Spot, with Epic Skill Focus:Spot etc. But that's just a PvP thing, in which case you probably lack survivability, even if you can spot people. For finding spies, typically there are enough shifters/dragon shapers hanging around druids to spot anyone they want. So I wouldn't bother with putting anything more into Spot than the 32 base ranks.

having looked at teh druid spell list, conjuration and evocation seem to be the most useful, yes. Also i forgot that I can take brew potion, craft wand or scribe scroll. Brew potion would be very in character for what i have in mind, but perhaps not the most useful aside from barkskin potions

I don't see much use for a druid with any of the crafting feats. Many of the useful nature spells (e.g. camouflage) are already available on items. Shifters generally like potions, though, for some basic buffs. I think there are a few druid potion brewers out there at least, so you might be able to talk to them. Craft Wand would also have some use with Freedom and Mass Camouflage. Again, nothing game-changing, but a source of RP and money.

Scribe scroll seems ... interesting? Not sure what you could get out of it, but I suppose there are a lot of divine-only spells that aren't available on scrolls easily.

There's an RP reasoning for the race choice, obviously. Just because it's not mechanically sound doesn't make it wrong. We don't correct people on their races, because they have picked them for a reason. At least, we shouldn't :p

How would you avoid using it? It's impossible, as it's something NWN lets you pick before you get in the mod, so there's not a way to fix it (unless it was set up to remove a feat after creation, but I think that would be too quirky and annoying haha).

Water Genasi is a very clever choice honestly, as the position of Archdruid of Water is vacant. Bini tinks dat Xeorsos is a clebber player who spots teh vacuums!

The position isn't open because it doesn't exist afaik.

Obviously. I actually thought it was an interesting choice. If there had been a serious problem with the build due to the race, I would have warned him, though.

I always wondered that myself. One could start as half-elf, for example. (Or do they have a different body?)

You get a bonus feat at first level if you use a human base as your genasi. It's fine imo.

Yeah, I chose Water Genasi because I'd been aching to play a Genasi and the Water ones seem super cool. I'm going with a lineage of Marid, so she's heavily chaotic.

Other than swapping empower spell for something to boost saves or toughness, is there anything else I could do to shore up the build? Also, are there models for any of the following in the game: crocodile/alligator, snake, or any other sort of aquatic-based land animal? I plan to collect enough DCs to swap her epic summon for a water elemental and change her animal companion to something that, like her, can exist in both environments.

I'd been looking for such for my own water genasi but could find very little that wasn't just a solely water based one like a... whale, shark or squid!

Quite possible a snake model may exist though, now that you mention it...

Or you can take some feat completely useless for your toon, like weapon focus in weapon you'll never use, for example.

Snakes are in. You can use a basilisk to mimic an alligator/crocodile. There is a giant frog that looks awesome as well.

There's a giant frog? I'm in love with this idea.

What would be - if it is at all - a good cleric/bard mix? I'm thinking support caster/healer role, maybe a bit of summoning thrown in for good measure.

You wont be good at supporting imho if you dual class those. Both require a goodly amount of dedication to have enough spells for the entire team or to keep them up a long time. Each supports a team in a different way with a different caster stat. To be a good bard for the party you need 12, 16, or (PLEASE THIS ONE) at least 20 levels of bard. I usually prefer 25 though.

A 20 bard, 9 cleric, 1 Ranger I've seen and was pretty nifty especially in time for boss's and some pvp.

Again I stress going one or the other. You can be a devout follower of XX religion without cleric and be a bard. Or be a Cleric who enjoys the occasional song or art.

Just a pigeons 2 cents.

It's only a matter of your own preference, you can scale the class spread from 1/29 to 29/1 tbh, so...

Summoning? Only cleric can give you that. For EMD or EDK you need 21 cleric, apart from that it depends on the domains; you can get Gate at 8'th [extended at 9'th], Greater Planar Binding, or Death domain summon.

8 bard will give you +2ab +2dmg song.

10 bard will give you access to his 4'th level spells [Improved Invisibility, War Cry], but if you want to extend them, you'll need 13+ levels.

16 bard gives you +5 ac song.

20 bard gives you access to Lasting Inspiration.

...so, it's a matter of subtracting from one class and adding to the other.

A high-level bard is always welcome in a party. You become really good at level 16, but even better at Level 20.

The mentioned Bard 20 / Cleric 9 / Something X seems like a really nice idea to get additional party-wide buffs, like Prayer. This build should definitely aim for Divine Might, so your own damage will also be really nice. Plus, there's all the other helpful bits and pieces of having a few Cleric levels.

Cleric 9 has Level 5 spells, so with the right domain you can actually cast Heal or Raise Dead a few times a day. Also in armor, when your bard spells might not work reliably. Just invest in the Heal skill as well and things should go smoothly. But you will not have any high-level summons this way.

Your attributes might suffer a bit from this combination (you need everything, maybe except DEX), but in the end the absolute musts are just STR 13, WIS 15, CHA 16, and that is easy enough to achieve. Everything else is bonus.
