I'm looking for information about Umberhulks.
How do they behave? What kind of food do they crave? What noises do they make? In combat, is it a "smash" with the fists, or a cut with a claw or a "bite" with the... erm, mandibles?
Any other info you can provide.

The homepage for that site states: Quote: Umber hulks eat young purple worms, anhkhegs, and similiar creatures. However, their favorite prey are humans! Though I'm not sure where that comes from specifically. Terran sounds like rocks, pebbles, and gravel sliding over each other. as they are aberrations, there's probably some chittering and bug-like screeches thrown in for accent.

Go to a library ingame, go afk and look through the source books! It's what I used to do.. Much to the displeasure of people who poked and prodded at me while I was caught up in reading.

Maybe he doesn't want to do research in-game. Perhaps, with the collective knowledge already here, we can give him the information that he's asked for in this thread instead of telling him to bugger off and find out in-game. Quote: How do they behave? What kind of food do they crave? What noises do they make? In combat, is it a "smash" with the fists, or a cut with a claw or a "bite" with the... erm, mandibles? Dark Immolation wrote: Diet: Young purple worms, anhkhegs, and similiar creatures. However, their favorite prey are humans!

Communication:Terran sounds like rocks, pebbles, and gravel sliding over each other. as they are aberrations, there's probably some chittering and bug-like screeches thrown in for accent. Combat involves using claws and mandibles, as well as digging traps. Behavior: they dig around and hunt, unless they're being used as slave labor. Third edition sources don't elaborate on umberhulks much; most of this information comes from second edition or earlier.

Okay, I wasn't going to say anything because I figured it would die down.
The guy's questions have been answered. The suggestion to do IC research is duly noted, but it's stupid to fault anyone for asking background information if they believe it to be more readily available I.E. Sourcebooks. In this case, it happened to be. This is not the place for this silly back and forth. If you have more information to leave about Umber Hulks, post it. Otherwise, I think this has run its course.

I do. But for that, one needs to get IG. It's all I'm saying. I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'm merely trying to encourage people to use the libraries that exist on Amia, and to discover a whole "new" way of playing Amia, which is research RP. As presented above, some players are not even aware that this is possible.

Not that I disagree with your core sentiment, but this is the lore forum, where people come to ask lore questions. Telling people they shouldn't do that seems rather unreasonable to me.

You got a point there, indeed. I think both points are valid.

Nobody attack me viciously please over this, because I don't have source material to look in, but I've been told Umberhulks (at least some of them) can speak Undercommon as well.

I'd wager it depends on the group of Umber Hulks. Umber Hulks that live closely to a UD settlement or work with one like the those in Underport? They probably do speak Undercommon. Though ones way, way out in the wild that attack and eat humanoids on sight? There probably isn't much reason for them to know or care what their food is yelling at them.

The ones of Underport are thralls, much like the ones you combat in the Mindflayer dungeons on both A and B. We presently lack any 'wild' bands of the beasties, iirc.

I wasn't aware that I could PM a DM for ingame research... so that's interesting info ^_^.
To give you some context though: I just wanted to know what I could emote when polymorphed. Thea doesn't care about umberhulks, except that she sometimes is shaped like one.

Well, turning into a creature never gives you command over their specific language by default, so keep that in mind. But as the form is capable of speech, you can speak while polymorphed into one I believe, but only whatever languages the PC already knows.
Mimicking eating practices, fighting behavior and basically everything else is fine though.

The fighting practice of umber hulks is a bit...non applicable here...from what little I recall reading about them fighting, they mostly just stand there and take hits like a champ due to their super thick hides that only extreme force or extreme magic enhancement can penetrate, but the umber hulks here take hits like they are made of butter.
But yeah as for emoting/talking, you can speak any language your character knows in Umberhulk shape, as they can speak spoken language...or...however you want to say that in your head so it sounds less awkward.

We really need to stop using the term "Find out IC". It's terribly sour. If there is info - Share it!

After digging through about a hundred old Dragon Magazines found Ecology of the Umberhulk in #152 so if you can find a PDF of that somewhere go to it because as much as I love the spreading of D&D lore hand writing out an entire article here doesn't sound very fun.
But just for fun, some fun facts about Umber Hulks, as was stated in Dragon #152 in 1989 back in 2nd ed when D&D was TSR not WoTC and paraphrased by me, enjoy.
-They stand about three yards in height, weigh 1500-1750 lbs on average.
-Though their slicing mandibles and rending claws are the main attacks their mouths are full of small grinding teeth.
-They breathe through a modified gill like structure on their necks hinting at a past as an aquatic life form (maybe they were a creation of the Aboleth in the early days of history when the Aboleth ruled the sea ect... ect...) This allows them to eat and breath at same time.
-As stated while an Umberhulks diet consists mostly of other underdark creatures they relish the tastes of humans and will often go out of their way for such tasty fare.
-While they are sentient beings with a language of their own and able to formulate, plan and elaborate hunting methods (Often involving self dug tunnel networks they are creatures of wanton destructive and savage territorial instinct going so far as to smash, rip and ruin the possessions of their victims, except gems and objects of gold or platinum which umberhulks sometimes collect.
-Only one in four Umberhulks is female and male Umberhulks will fight to the death against overwhelming odds to assure a females safe escape.
-Umberhulks have a gestation period of a year after witch a female gives live birth to one to three hulkings. Durring the first year of their life mother and young are ravenously hungry and the females are at their most predatory.
-Umberhulks reach Adult at two years of age and are capable of killing and combat just moments after birth. In the wild Umberhulk males can live for upwards of 50 years and females 75. Domestic Umberhulks having one would suspect longer life spans.
-Though the tremorsense granted by the Hulks antenea is their most legendary sense all of an Umberhulks senses are quite sharp and unlike many natives to underground regions they do not suffer adverse effects due to bright light. However if forced to hunt on the surface (No Umberhulk willing travels above ground if it can help it) they prefer to do so at night.
-While umberhulk speach can be understood it is rather impossable for most creatures to mimic the sounds they generate when "talking".
-When paid in their favorite treasures, or human meat Umberhulks have been known to work for other beings freely. Though they are also often found as slaves to beings able to psionicly or magicaly dominate them.
-No one knows what Umberhulks do with the treasure they collect some suspect the have a crude economy or it plays some role in attracting their mates.
-A wild umberhulks territory is often marked where the hulk hones its claws on the stones. Their nests tend to consist of a treasure room, Larder of victims or meat they intend to eat (umberhulks have been known to eat rotting meat with no ill effect) and a central chamber where the hulk spends its time honing its claws and other Hulkish pass times.
-Umberhulks have a number of uses, their exoskeletons when cured can be used to make armor, their mandibles and claws crafted into crude weapons or spikes, blades and points on primitive weaponry. Some goblin and kobold tribes thus consider finding an already dead umberhulk a very valuable find. An umberhulks eyes often find use in potions, scroll ink and items relating to enhanced senses, confusion and strength.
