Ruathen can be substituted by old Danish or norweigan, which I sometimes do for flavor, per ruling of a DM a while ago this was considered fine since if you look up references to the language that is what its supposed to roughly be based on.

That's actually really handy to know! Maybe I can stop typing [Ruathen] when giving commands to Aod now.

If someone uses other words than English language, then I will ask them to provide the word description or meaning in a tell. When I play elf, I dont need to learn elven language for it. Much like other languages than English are not used to communicate or RP in the server. At one point it was so big a thing that everyone was tossing elven words while generally speaking elven.. Which then should have used the English corresponding word.. I understand if you do *Common* "Uses elven word" *Common*... But at least be kind enough to provide the meaning to those who have legimate reasons to know it. Elven is a rather common language.

In my opinion it depends on the context. simple things, like 'Hello', 'Yes', 'No' might be fun to use in RP, in a similar vein as names might have a meaning. Saying whole sentences like 'I had bacon and eggs for breakfast today' doesn't really make the character more interesting. That usually just adds OOC to the conversation, as people will ask you what that meant in English.
Things like dog-training, I personally think it pretty cool. I mean, my dad and I always joked about teaching a dog the command 'drainage ditch', because it is a pretty nonsensical word. A dog, if trained, will react to that word just like another dog reacts to the word 'sit', or 'roll over', or whatever. So, using a different language seems pretty cool, especially as common isn't even such a common language in lore. It's literally a language made so people can interact while still learning a simple language. Poetry wouldn't even neccessarily work in common. If I understand that correctly, it's kind of like Esperanto, which essentially got rid of a lot of grammar to make it easier to understand and learn. So I personally like small attempts to mirror that IG. Of course, sometimes people play characters that should understand something, but the players don't, but it reminds me of playing a 28 nat int wizard. (I mean, I highly doubt you are actually in the highest 99.999% irl, I know I'm not) You have to improvise a bit.
And personally, I much rather see things like 'Alae' than '[Elven] Hello', because it just seems weird to me.

Was fun.

Well, I wont bother myself to learn a fantasy language. Each for their own though, but if I am playing an elf and someone goes with elf sentences word which I do not know, I do expect them to provide the meaning in a tell then. Otherwise, I just look for someone else to rp with.
Small words are not an issue. But when we had a situation of people trying to up one-upmanship other players by displaying languages which are commonly known. It just ruins the experience of RP for me. To me this is similar to lore elitism that people would be discouraged to play a race if not knowing the lore of them extensively. Even if they are common races of Faerun.
The point from my perspective is that people should be more inclusive in RP, not exclusive. And creating depth through language is fine, but also bear some cordiality to provide the name/meaning/thing in plain English for those who are of same race at least.

Well at the time it was fun.
Also if your character speaks the language and you see this fantasy language shit going down just greentext the person if your character speaks it. They'll tell you.

I used to throw a lot of ancient Egyptian words around when I played my Mulan priest. If someone else's character knew Mulhorandi and sent me a tell asking what Meriptah was saying, I would gladly let them know.

I'd even say it's kind of jerkish behaviour if you don't tell people what your character is saying. I'd even go as far as reporting that player for griefing. I mean, I can go along and talk German in talk channel. Maybe a few people would understand, but it, in my opinion, would be considered a form of Griefing.

If your char knows the language, just send me a tell and I'll gladly translate.

Personally, I don't have the time nor inclination to learn a language to play a game. I'm with Mags on that. I mean, common words, sure, go for it. But, if you do a whole sentence in a fantasy language, I'm more likely to ignore you than bug you to find out what you said.
I rather not break immersion and go OOC is my point, when... you can just [language] and I got it without any fuss.
PS, I loved that three hour window when we had the language script in place. Regardless of the stupidity that might ensue (well, would ensue as this is Amia and we can't agree on anything and everyone speaks every language for no apparent reason...) I thought that system was fabulous. It kept you honest, since... yeah, I can't know what you just said, but.. I know what you just said.

There is no need to get so worked up about it.
If you want to know what my char said, I'll tell you via tell immediately.
I don't get it why Amia's community wants to take such hard stances to everything. If you do x then I will ignore you etc.
It just makes me wonder why I play here when it feels that whatever I do I am bound to piss off someone or be vilified / ignored.

If you are in a situation where other people are speaking the actual words most of the time and the translations are slowing down the rp, just suggest to them that you do the conversation via [Language] *insert english here* instead.
It's not like these sorts of situations happen very often, most of the time people write with the [Language] thing simply. But if you are in a conversation where people are using actual words of the spoken language, then you can easily make it work without taking any extreme route towards the rp.

Ooc for about a minute in order to make the conversation more tenable?
There is loads of ooc going on Amia most of the time, compared to IC chat.
I just don't get it honestly why this is so difficult. If you want people to write in english simply, just tell them. And if they are acting like an ass about it, take it to a DM.

*shrug* I prefer to not have to go ooc. That's all. Sure, there is a lot, but, I try to avoid it when I can. I much prefer immersion to having to go ooc to find out things I would already know. You all seem to think I'm being mean and need to relax, but I'm merely giving my opinion just as you are. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I'm being pissy or in need of being told to relax.
DM's have already said that some sprinkling is fine. However, since there is really no true language to language translation for D&D (as per our DM team), it's all just fluff.

Passion in a medium that doesn't allow for vocal expression tends to be mistranslated as agitation or anger.
Toms point is valid though. If you have an issue with them doing it, OOC talk to them and ask them to do the [ ] thing or send you tells of translations. Ignoring someone just because their RP method is not to your liking is a bit rude and inconsiderate of other players (maybe they object or dislike YOUR method and feel like its immersion breaking), not to mention potentially having IC consequences (if you ignore someone that is trying to help you say, you miss out on information your character may need AND risk pissing off the character).

And I don't think they'll continue to be typing in that other language if you ask them to write stuff in English.

Actually... I thought the DM's said speaking completely in another language was not within the lore of Amia. As I said, sprinking a word here and there, no issue. Why should I have to ask someone to -not- do something they're -not- supposed to do in the first place?
Likely as not, I'd ask for a translation a few times, but... if they didn't get the hint, I'd find something else to do, or someone else to rp with.
My point being... Why bother with adding "flavor" by using something you have to explain every single time you say anything? That to me is quite tedious.
As for them thinking I am immersion breaking? How? I'm not the one forcing OOC.
Anyway... now I am starting to get a touch agitated, so I'll just leave you all to it. Enjoy. I've said all I needed to say on the topic, like it or not.

Honestly people on Amia just need to be more transparent and open towards each other oocly. And be willing to talk about things, especially if something is bothering them. We can all work together and have fun together too. I have nothing against you That Guy and I hope to play soon with Nimi'wae ingame too.

I've...not seen anywhere since this topic came up or anywhere else that this was forbidden behavior. That being said, its extremely uncommon behavior so I'm a bit surprised this heavy of a discussion ahs popped up. I can count the number of times I've seen people converse fully in one language on one hand in the...roughly eight years I've played here. Quote: Likely as not, I'd ask for a translation a few times, but... if they didn't get the hint, I'd find something else to do, or someone else to rp with. Why bother with adding "flavor" by using something you have to explain every single time you say anything? That to me is quite tedious. To others, its not. They enjoy it, that's why they do it, and the fact you find it tedious is why you don't. Quote: As for them thinking I am immersion breaking? How? I'm not the one forcing OOC. I meant not necessarily this specific instance I'm saying in general maybe something you do irritates others the same way. The point was even if it can be frustrating try to be accommodating. As Tom pointed out one of the problems with this server is the vitriolic attitude so many people have to take a hard line on something and refuse to allow compromise or variation or for other people to have a viewpoint. Too many people feel things have to be an exact certain way and it discourages people from playing. Not saying your viewpoint itself is wrong or immersion breaking, just saying dismissing others people RP/ignoring it doesn't encourage people to play with differing viewpoints. And don't get agitated. Its a game and opinions about the game. Nobody is saying your wrong in your viewpoint, you aren't because its yours and its a subjective matter, so please don't get upset that people are not agreeing with you, we're just expressing our opinion on the matter. Budly wrote: That script sounds awesome. I remember those from other servers that been long dead and buried. Lycanthropes: Since different requests I've read seem to have different things, I was curious about one thing. Can you request a lycanthrope who was born as one, or does he have to be bitten? And if yes, does he have to do so on Amia, and by a PC lycanthrope? (I know the terminology is wrong, but I was curious about this, and knowing what is allowed/feasible usually is better than turning a request around 50 times) I remember reading somewhere that it should be by a PC lycanthrope, but that seems a bit strange, since, AFAIK, there aren't any lycanthropes prone to infecting people around. // Again, this is a bit more my brain spitting out seven thousand concepts a minute, but I am actually pretty curious about this. Quick edit to add something amusing. FRWikia calls Belladonna Wolfsbane, as if there were the same plant. Now, on Amia (and IRL) we actually have two plants: Aconite, or Wolfsbane, and Atropa Belladonna, deadly nightshade (represented as a thornapple IG). And then, on top of that, we have the item Belladonna.

You can request a Natural (born) lycanthrope or an Afflicted (bitten) one. If you request an Afflicted one it just has to be explained in the backstory how it came to happen. They don't have to come to Amia and find a PC lycanthrope to infect them if that's what you're asking? I believe there's a thread in the Lore section about the differences between the two which would be good to look at if you actually did want to request a lycanthrope.

Nope. There is two different parts of Imbue Arrow. There is the fireball arrow, which is like in the Wiki, goes Kaboom, deals damage, like Wiki says. Then there is the part where you can use a spell on arrows, from anywhere (items, wands, scrolls, casting it yourself) and add (I think) 1d6 damage. It's mainly so that in the early levels you get along a bit better, because even 1d6 fire is hella expensive.

Okay, so it makes each arrow fired into an exploding arrow of that energy type? Or.. do you have to use a special "imbued arrow" button or something. Never had one. No idea.
Robbi answered part of it....

So, if you go into normal NWN, you see the imbue arrow feat. It pretty much just does a fireball. That is what you usually get for an AA. You still get that in Amia.
Additionally, and without any sort of button or anything, you get the stuff listed in the sidebar. Cast Fireball onto a normal arrow, from any source, and it will turn into 1d6 arrow. Just 1d6 damage. Basically like the ones from the Fletcher in Cordor.
Again, don't quote me on 1d6. It could also be 1d8. I think it's d6 though.

Fireball is its own feat. You get like.. 2 uses of it a day?
You can also use the selected spells on plain arrows to add damage to em. Spells can come from actual spells, wands, scrolls, items and all work. Damage doesn't last forever, but is a nice addition at least.

Can you imbue any arrow? Like ones that already have other types of damage?

Sadly not. That's why it isn't all too gamebreaking. As soon as you are around level 15 or so, other arrows will likely be much more powerful. Latest when you can find friends that give you 1d12 arrows, or a Djinn one. Except that it doesn't cost any/much money, depending on how you get the spells.

That actually sounds pretty interesting from my point of view, being an non AA archer character. Be nice to witness that first hand sometime! heh

IIRC, it was an already established PC who wanted to become a lycanthrope, so the stipulation was they needed to do it IG/IC rather than "off screen" and obviously it couldn't be in backstory. At the time there were a few active lycanthropes running around, which made that both feasible and preferred.

Two part question for Dev and/or DM:
Is there any purpose to Quality and Material properties outside of the Job system and RP?
If not, is there any associated DC cost to adding a Quality or Material property to an item? I know it requires making a new item or editing an old one in the toolset anyway, so I'm assuming 1 DC, a la a description change.

I FEEEEEL like I remember there being "hidden properties" on one or two of Materials, but I don't recall if that was true or just something that had to be discussed (i.e., Cold Iron having a hidden +1 vs. Fae and Silver having a hidden +1 vs Shapechangers). I might also just be conflating the frequency that weapons and armor with thoae requested mechanics also had the associated Material added. Either way, those two cost the same as other Material/Quality, which is "included in the price of the item" AKA "nothing" so they probably do nothing.
Material and Quality it just RP fanciness. Quality doesn’t do anything tangible. These "vanity properties" don't cost anything in and of themselves, although if you're not getting anything else other than one of these properties added or made, it would still be 1 DC as the base price of a customized item.
Boring trivia: I added Masterwork Quality to all the magical items I made for people, as a nod to that in PnP an item that is magical is automatically Masterwork/must be Masterwork to be permanently magical.
(Phone posting, pardon if anything is ???)

Nothing hidden about that, since nwn doesn't do materials, it just adds a flat +1 AC or enhancement vs. creature or +2 if you make the bonus roll. That being said, thats a regular bonus, so it gets overwritten if you have a higher enhancement or AC bonus on the object, making it a nice nod but basically useless. I sometimes use it for flavor, like with the anti-demon arrows I requested for my AA which were made from cold iron, but besides that, there is not much special about it.

since blackmoor keep is enter-able and it just got updates viewtopic.php?p=1434632#p1434632can we go there now also if not could you plot lock it or something it's really misleading having an 'off limits' place with no way to know it's 'off limits' w/o a dm actually yelling you.

Serious question: Is Blackmoor Keep off limits? I mean, are not OOC allowed to go there, or am I misunderstanding something?

I always thought Blackmoor was ICly off limits, according to story and plotlines. If it is OOCly off limits, I never saw it posted anywhere.

it was ooc off limits but you could just go in to get yelled at.
but now it's been made dynamic so you can go in, if they didn't want you to go in why let you back in at all or why not just plot lock the doors?
so is it good to go now? why fix it so you can go in again if you arn't meant to?
