I see this occaisionally in game, where someone will give an action statement, that is OOC, and most likely aimed to insult someone, rather than to describe what their character is doing. For instance, typing in game something along the lines of *thinks so and so is an idiot* or something similar. Its a bit rude, and unproductive. If you are describing something, keep it IC, without pointed edges towards other players. I know the example I have given is not the best, but I am sure you catch my drift. Doing things like this only creates harsh feelings OOC, and is not neccessary.

I actually thinks she has a good point, I always found it a bit weird when people did that and there is something of an in joke going between a few players I know where we occassionally do it just to be annoying.
I think there is a difference though between writing *looks at jack as though he is an idiot* and *looks at jack, thinking he is an idiot and how he will later be killed painfully*.
I figure, if someone gives you information like that use it. Somehow, they are telling you that your character knows it so go with it. I sometimes write *is somehow aware of julia's thoughts, and plots how to kill her* or something to that affect:D

I do see it a lot, it's annoying. I understand the feeling to elaborate on it.
Next time it should happen, throw them the list of things I like to tell people doing it. Giving them a choice of the following options:
1. Either have your character say the other character is an idiot outside of the **
2. Use a gesture in the **, but keep it's meaning implied.... I'd rather see "*Turns her nose up to the Kobold* Whatever you say..." then "*turns her nose up to the Kobold, because she thinks he's a stupid arse that deserves to die*" With no talking? sorry, my character just sees you putting up her nose.
3. Request a character with telepathy, then you can think all the thoughts you want into someones head, then wish them luck getting it approved.
Failing these 3 options, tell them to go *think* about all they want in a corner, these semi-OOC attacks are just poison to a RP session, and do nothing but aggravated people OOCly, I have no problem being nasty IC, but no need to god emote your PCs feelings.
Of course, most offenders of this often do not grace our fine forums, so it may fall short of reaching them. None the less, it never hurts to put it out there hopefully. and I realize 1 and 2 are similar in context, but I like to elaborate, hehe
P.S. - No kobolds were nose turned up at during the making of this post, it was only an example

If I do it, I do it for comedic relief because I have thought of something funny, but am unable to say it since it's not in my PC's personality to say it, though he may be thinking it. Thus "*Begins planning Ogrillion mining operation by painting elves on the wall*". This was made after comments about Ogrillions needing something to smash since they can be disloyal otherwise.

It's bad form and it comes from OOC butthurtness about a certain thing. Something that the player just couldn't let slide but hasn't quite got the cojones to put it in the mouth of his character (the statement, not the cojones). Thought bubbles are in the same league, too.
Although if you looked around, you'd find that all these things have been discussed before, numerous times and in great detail. There's no new ground here, and giving advice on every single thing that annoys you is a sure way to annoy a few folks yourself. No hard feelings.
Used to be common to deliver insults to other players that way. I wonder if that trend is making a comeback.

One thing I have been known to make as a response, as my main char is female, with the scarf head-model, is *adjusts her headscarf, as the tinfoil lining is clearly beginning to slip*

Anyway, another topic settled, though I believe except telling them its idiotic in game you cant do much. A forum post where everyone agrees wont stop them from doing it. I dislike it myself, but I pick who I rp on a regular basis with and I wont rp with people that I dont want to.

I thought the oO(thought)Oo emote was frowned upon as being conductive to metagaming and down right insulting?
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that this was banned, Jan.. do your magic!
Anyways, I think emoting something your PC is 'thinking' isn't constructive and invites metagaming, nor is it exactly polite... It's much better to RP something along the lines of *Jim looks at Pete like he is odd, a hateful expression on his face*

I played on a server where it was frowned upon to use thoughts as emotes. such as.
*Lays on the bench, lamenting over his lost love*
as opposed to
*Lays on the bench, a sorrowful expression on his face*
The second invites Roleplay.
The first invites meta-gaming.

I've never really seen the idea behind emote-insulting. (or whats-it-called) It's just not fun. Insulting someone face to face is always more rewarding, in terms of RP and manners. Why think that someones a moron, when you can just say that ''You are a Torm-be-damned moron.'' and see the reaction.

I don't see this kind of thing very often at all, fortunately, but it does happen from time to time, and it's very clearly intended as an OOC jab. While sometimes they can be comic relief, most often they tend towards a way to insult the player's RP, or insult other things about the player, without having to worry about the consequences by just being able to say, "It was IC. Deal with it IC."

I've only had it done to me a select few times, but that was only by a hand full players that, for whatever reason, feel the need to dislike me OOCly because of something my toon did ICly. I simply ignore thought bubbles and emotes where there's no actual action taken. I do make a mental note of the person doing it, though. There is no telepathy on Amia. Therefore, emoting your character's thoughts or using the rediculous .oO() thingies is pointless. As has been said in this thread all ready and said in numerous other ones, it's pointless. It only invites meta-gaming and is a cheap OOC way to take a jab at someone.
If you want to relieve the tension, but your character is too serious to say or do such a thing, well... why is he thinking it? A serious character is a serious character, if you want to relieve tension, make a less serious character.

I think it's "chalk full" or something... like a play on words or something? I mean, I never use that phrase, but I'm pretty sure it's not "chockful" Stormak.
Ohh. And it comes from chocks the blocks I guess? Weird.. hey I was right about the play-on-words thing. It doesn't really make sense.. that's why it's some old-person phrase.

Or just send them a Tell reminding them of the uselessness of said emote, since our PCs are not mindreaders. And if they keep doing that, say that you took a screenshot, remind the player that said behaviour is harassment and... voilà.
The player will either apologize or just be quiet but never do it again. >.>

I prefer to act as if I have no idea what they just emoted. It makes no sense, but I see it all the time.
It's possible. If it's a silken mask, for instance, the fabric is malleable enough to "shape" said smirk.
EDIT: Keep in mind that mask is not always something of a hard material covering one's face. Sometimes it's only covering the mouth, or the eyes but "a la Zorro".

I very much prefer to think that despite NWN's limitations, not everyone is going to be running around in full-face helms. Many will icly be using open faced helms, or possibly even circlets or such.
Naturally, all onus falls upon the player to make it clear if that is the case though. The rest of us can't be expected to psychically know that you think of your helmet as a circlet on your brow.
I personally just hate everything about the helm designs in NWN. 90% of them would hinder in battle more than they'd help. If you watch "Troy" (the Brad Pitt one), there's several camera scenes where you see as though from the characters' perspective, and it's quite evident how limiting even a partial-face helm is.

Yep. When my PC used a mask, I would always describe what it was supposed to be like.

I prefer to look at, '*thinks so and so is an idiot*' as them giving my character a glare, eye roll or another snarky look. I then use it as an IC invitation to wander over.
The helmet discussion is a good one. Can we split it please?

However, if I see some fella get yelled at by his "wife," or whatever, in-game, and some random git does the "oO(Ouch...)Oo", I'm sold. I'll laugh my ass off.

I do the whole ** a lot when my characters are thinking things, not so you know what I am thinking, but so you can know what body language I have at that moment. for an example *wonders why he talks* Not to be mean occ but for the body and facial expressions that would be present.
