On passing and accepting of such fine freebies Johanna Hardingdale congratulates the caravan for their initiative and offers them Brandobaris' blessings.

Belladonna passes the caravan and watches from the shadows. She watches the hin after the meeting which from what she hears is rather pleased to have missed.

In the following few days she can be seen more about the forests than she can the Dale she shakes her head sadly as she wonders how things can come to of such a sorry state.

To The Good Hin of the Dale

I, Eia Shaji-Shadowflame, was recently attacked by a person of questionable character just outside Bendir Dale jurisdiction. The story goes as following.

I was in Bendir Dale, shopping and talking to two kind merchants, while several hin was around. I do not know the name of the merchants. The first I bought potions of Greater Restoration and Freedom from. The other merchant shared his knowledge of sale techniques with me, before I purchased a Wand of Stoneskin from him.

While I was talking with the last mentioned Merchant, a man of elven stature announced he had a letter for me, and that I had to sign for this said letter. When he was gone and I had read my letter I left Bendir Dale in haste, due to the content of the letter.

The man who delivered the letter was really a person with evil intentions, he claimed to have kidnapped my bloodbrother, and if I did not follow him outside the jurisdiction I would never find out where my brother was.

I was fooled, he never had my brother, and he attacked me, tortured me, and cut my throat, before throwing me into a portal back to my home.
He wished to use me as a message to a friend of mine. I am not the first or the last person he will hurt, or kill, with evil and selfish intentions. I know of minimum two other friends who have suffered similar fate as I, if I had not been sent home in a portal, I would have suffocated in my own blood.

I kindly and humbly beg the people of Bendir Dale to keep an eye out for this person, he goes by the name of Nero, however I suspect it is as fake as everything else about him.

I do not come on behalf of my House, they do not know I am here, and they never asked for my co-operation. This is entirely on my own, and I sincerely hope that any who may have information will step forward, especially the witnesses from that night.

To end my humble request, I give you all a description of the man, who has committed horrible crimes in the past and will do so in the future. So you may all know his appearance, and stay safe.

Nero

An elven male wearing a loose, metal enforced assassin clothing, colored like the dark blue of shadows. His cloak and helmet fitting the color pattern. Average height and build for an elf, arming himself with either a longbow or a set of kamas. Remains highly capable in unarmed combat, specializing in backstabbing and crippling his foes with the aid of stealth.

Any information may be pinned, inside an envelope on this board. I shall return soon.

Belladonna being one of the few hin to retain some sense of self respect and control, continues to go about her buisness in the forests.

However on one of her trips back to the Dale she checks on the noticeboard and reads the message. She frowns deeply and her knuckles whiten, as she is friends with at least one of the Shadowflames.

'This is as good as kidnapping from our lands' She growls under her breath, drawing the attention of those in the building. She points out the note to them all and asks that they read it and spread the word around.
She re-strings er bow and steps out into the square were she soon disappears into the shadows.

*The message is placed on the Militia Bulletin board with the following added note*

Any residents who can confirm or deny the portions of this story that transpired within the Dale are asked to contact a Militia Captain regarding this allegation.

The merchants in question were myself and Thistle and I do recall her recieving a note as well as her hasty exit. I did not follow her but nor do I recall seeing her afterwards. However I do confirm the description given of the man who handed her the letter.

Or rather, the term Hin.
I can't find any official sources as to how that term got coined. It was always halfling or hobbit for me, back in 2.0 days.

I'm thinking it's derived from Halfling + Kin
If so, plurality should be hin and not hins.

I honestly have no idea, but I always just considered it a Halfling word they use for themselves ::shrugs::

In common they are called halfling because they are about half the size from humans size.

Btw.. hins shouldnt even live among themselfs, because by lore they enjoy living in other races lands, mostly human cities.

There's plenty of topics in the past where DMs mention that the events on Amia don't go with much of the literature, as they are, in a sense, in the future.

There's no reason why not. Most of the hin PCs on amia are FROM the mainland. And the NPCs are still hin at heart. The wanderlust is in their blood. (Or at least should be, IMHO)

I always thought the plural of hin was hin ... hins has just never sounded right tme.

Just saying, things have shaped the hin on Amia (I'm just talking about PCs, not NPCs) to make them how they are and shouldn't be declared as wrong.

I agree, bobo. Though whether they are right or wrong to do so was not an issue.

I read somewhere that halfling call themselves hin, because they don't consider themselves Half of anything.

Just like cat, mouse, poop, blob, creature, halfling and drow. They are all words that people have 'invented'. Just like hin. So you can't say that it's just made up word. Besides, if it commonly used or wide spread, as it is, it is not make up word anymore. I can now invent a word. Lets say Unghalla. It means race of retards who are stupid and all. Now thats a made up word.

And learn, that ingame, the word hin IS wide spread and so. So it is not made up word. Offgame, you might think so, but ingame it is common word.

I think you got the wrong impression, Daniel.

I believe what Prince was getting at was "Hin" was a made up word from scratch as opposed to the conjunction of "Halfling" and "Kin"

Rico Ondenfare can be seeing holding a Bundle of cloth resembling a small baby. When asks he says he found it near the Mylocks as an offering to a Deity. The only thing he seems to be concerned with is the child's welfare.

*The planter reappears suddenly. The sticks are moved slightly and the soil, if observed carefully, has a different cast to it and smells a bit different too. A few days later small buds are seen pushing up out of the soil and beginning to grow. The planter stays watered and free of weeds*

As far as I know, Hin did not exist until 3.0.
So yes, it was made up by WotC, just like all the monsters and races unique to their franchise. Just like Illithid and Kender are made up. They exist for the franchise.

The baby seems to be a Tiefling, two bumps are on her head. When asked what her name is, Rico replies "Marisa", the same name as his late mother. He promptly sends a message to the Mayor:

Dear Sir Nof.

I have recently, while adventuring, found a Tiefling baby, no more than three months old I must say, laid out as a sacrifice to some Deity. Out of instinct of incoming Mylocks, rescued the baby and brought it to the Dale, where I have fed her and kept her alive. I would like an audience or a confirmation that this baby may become a citizen of the Dale under my name, Rico Ondenfare, and that she is raised and treated like any other resident of the Dale.

I wish for a reply soon.

Ilithid and Kender are older then WotC. Kender come from the Dragonlance books and Illithid have been around since AD&D times. but I see what you are saying...it really comes down to not "copying" hobbits.

Yeah, that's Gygax and TSR history, which is roughly represented by WotC in today's context. Being sued once for using Hobbits is enough to make them learn their lesson though :lol:

I normally do not post in the bendir forums but I do have a question. In 2nd edition what were hin called as well as what did they call themselves? halflings? hin? or another name?

There were 3 types of halflings, Hairfeet, Tallfellows and Stouts.
But they were just that, halflings.

In any case. Hin is the correct term in Amia, as it is largely 3.0 and uses the term "the hin" as what they call themselves. The Hin Fist order of monks (as described in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book) are so named because of it.

There is much turmoil going on in our Dale, about how things are being run and about changes desired by our residents. Regardless of how any one feels, those feelings must not drive a wedge between us when external hostilities threaten to destroy us as strongly as they are now. Many of you know and may even protest the added men around the Dale, complete with their horns and bowls of water. Some of may be trying to convince militia members that they need not be members of the militia and can abandon their posts as they please because it's not a big deal.

Unfortunately, this kind of attitude nearly got a militia man killed while on duty. The moles are starting to wise up to how things are going along, striking quick and fading away just as quickly. No matter how you feel about the way Bendir Dale is run, we can all agree that the lives hin have spent in Bendir Dale is worth more than our petty squabbles. We, the hin of this great village, must unite in the face of our foes as we always have. Already one hin has lost their life to the Mole Menace, and others will continue to fall before this foe if we continue to fight amongst each other.

That is our fate: We will either unite together, or the Dale will burn.

After hearing this, the only Hardingdale that was pleasantly happy living in Bendir Dale, Cobbin Hardingdale (The often merry, polite and quiet brother of Johanna) felt deeply sad and packed up all the belongings that have remained there by other familiy members.

A few pots and cooking utensils left by his mother, a miriad of texts left by his father, clothes and all sorts of materials left by his sister, but luckily nothing by his more outrageously chaotic brother that had already taken everything after getting a neighbour pregnant.

"That's the last of it" Cobbin said to his long term girlfriend with a malancholic smile before they set off with their cart.

"Where are we going?" Chrissy asked.

Cobbin rolled an old bone die, registered the number and smiled to his love. "Home" he replied.
