Svirfneblin are Grey Skinned, as are Duergar. None are Blackskinned like Drow.
Hin ARE in the Underdark, in Deepburrow (Upperdark) but they're the same lot as the surface Hin, just built deep into a deep ravine that extends all the way to the Underdark.

I think that it might possibly.. but undocumented. They'd be so culturally removed from any surface halfling if they did.
The way I see it is that the hin were created too recently to have had any affect on underdark hin to change their appearance to suit the climate/surroundings.
They were created solely for the surface, and haven't had any major event that has cast a specific group under ground like other UD races. Though, I speak generally. I'm not saying all UD races are outcast from the surface.
On the matter of ghostwise having darker skin, can someone link me to the info? I can't find it anywhere.
I have definitely read that all three hin types look alike and can be confused for the other, even by hin.

Drow were kicked down below by Corellon during the Crown wars.
Duergar were a former dwarven kingdom enslaved by the Illithids (Those squid heads haven't much luck I tell you with their slaves. First the Gith then the duergar)
Orogs were a large tribe of orcs that were forced into a mountain cave (that just happened to lead into the Underdark) by pursuing elves.
Goblins and Kobolds aren't "underdark" races, they're subteranean which just inhabit the underdark as well.
The only exception I'd say were the Svirfs, I think they went down there willingly.

well i think just like with the human race, with crossbreeding of races there is bound to have been a black human and a hin to have made a black hin offspring just as easy as any other crossrace relationships.
With many species in real life, they learn to adapt over time to thier surroundings much like native tribes in different regions. So I could imagine a savage group of hin somewhere in some vast desert or jungle that is outside alot and exposed to sun naturally evoling to have darker skin over time.
Case and point: Gollum - once a hobbit but over time was so consumed by the ring that he just didn't care about much of anything else and eventually evolved into some creature nothing like his former self.
So to answer the original question, i'd say YES there could be black hin.

But then on the other hand DnD is near almost absolutes. All Drow have dark skin, silvery/grey hair and either red/violet eyes. All gold dwarves are relatively golden brown or yellower in skintone. That sorta points out that Faerun is very similar to Medieval Europe where people didn't crossbreed so much.
Amia ofcourse is an exception to the rule. Crossbreed Aasimars, tieflings and half elves are more common then humans.... whatever floats your boat.

In an attempt to hijack/kidnap the "black hin" topic ( ) this week's discussion is on appearance.
Here's a snippet from the usual Big Book of Small Folk:
Quote: The three halfling subraces all look the same, though their manner of dress tends to differentiate them from one another. The typical hin stands about 3 feet tall and weighs between 30 and 40 pounds. She has dark brown or black eyes, ruddy skin and straight black hair. Once in a while, however, a child is born with fairer skin and curly brown or red-brown hair. Such a feature is always considered a good portent, and the hin say that such a child is "blessed by Brandobaris."
Do you agree/disagree? What are the exceptions in your opinion, if there are any? What are your thoughts about relevance of this to Amia/Bendir Dale? Chat chat chat *cracks whip*.

Most normal hin have dark hair, as far as I've seen in town. Pres is the only one with green hair and its not natural.
Mezzu's green probably comes from moss and years without washing.

*Tacked to the public notice board*
Dear fellow hin,
A few months back, a cleansing ceremony was conducted on those lands, purging the evil energies from it and rendering it fit to be used for agriculture and husbandry. With the leaving of former Captain Okra, the proposed development of the lands north have come to a standstill.
I would like to propose a meeting to discuss the development possibilities.
Some items previously suggested:
- Watch tower
- Bridge link or ferry
- Vegetable farm
- Animal farm
- Beehives
- Extended walls or fencing
- Public housing
- Excavation of cave
- Barracks and training academy for Militia
Feel free to bring up your opinions and other suggestions.

I am confused how come the average hin is 1/2 as tall as a human and yet weighs 1/5 or 1/6 the amount. Do they have no innards or bones? How the hell do they only weigh 30-40 pounds? That seems ridiculous.

Take a cube that is 1 meter wide, hight and deep. And let's say it's 100 lbs in weight.
If you take a cube that's just as dense but half the size it weights just 1/8th of the weight of the full sized one (12.5 lbs in this case). as it's half the height, half the width and half the depth.
being 1/5 or 1/6 makes sense, as they're half the height, but still keeping rather plump.

For those of you who know the history around that cave, this makes sense. I don't have time or space to explain in this note, but that cave should remain blocked off for many reasons. If you don't know why, ask a resident who's been around for a while.

I thought there was a race of "deep halflings" or some such because I remember asking this same question at one point...but I really don't remember where I came up with that knowledge.
And, yeah, with cross-breeding and such...have you ever met Blade or Mezzu? (both have dark brown skin and green hair )

and yes there is a race of Hins who are like the drow that hide in the caves... though they become more of a creature and not so much as hin anymore... the name of it slips me.. so forgive me on that and i will find that name *runs off to his books*

Actually it's pretty damn accurate. A typical Hin is about the size, in every aspect, of a 3-5 year old real life human child. A real life human child ranges from about 33-43 inches tall and weighs between 33-47 pounds between those ages. So it's very realistic and makes sense actually.

Nay, no such thing as Deep Hin. Sure, with cross breeding with black humans, Dark elves (in far back history), Drow, Duergar, Deep Gnomes, yeah, I'm sure there are dark Hin but they aren't a pure race which is what I was asking. They're cross breeds, not fully Hin at that point.
Just because Blade and Mezzu are dark and have green hair doesn't mean it makes what you guys created lore.
Soul_Reaper wrote: and yes there is a race of Hins who are like the drow that hide in the caves... though they become more of a creature and not so much as hin anymore...
You're probably thinking of Derro, as Galenson previously mentioned already. They're a weird cross breed of Dwarves and Humans and not Hin at all.

I will respectfully disagree. The physiology of halflings clearly wasn't very well thought out.
I know this is a magic world, so i guess this may be asinine, since we are supposed to just accept whatever they say in the books as "well, thats the way it is in this magical world". But clearly whoever made this up wasnt thinking, and had never seen a 3-4 year old child.
The amount of muscle needed to accomplish the tasks a hin* can accomplish would require around 40 pounds of muscle on the body. Nevermind the weight of any brain, organs, fluids, or bones. And im talking just opening doors in cordor, carrying gear, carrying a 15 pound large shield, etc etc.
Humans have 40% muscle mass +/- 10% or so? So a 150 pound adult would have 60 pounds of muscle. In comparison, a hin with 17 pounds of muscle and can accomplish all the same tasks?
(*at some normal STR. Nevermind what a hin with 40 STR would have to look like. Im thinking of that silly picture of the dog with huge muscles. http://www.bodybuildingblog.co.uk/images/muscle-dog.jpg )
Also, if they only weigh 30-40 pounds, they would blow away. Literally. Can we start RPing that when its a really bad storm, we need to start using our uber 13 pounds of muscles to hold on to the closest tree?
Anyway, i dont know why this has me so fired up. Even if its canon or whatever, its still ridiculous. Unless there is no physics involved in the FR, a 40 pound hin would be at the mercy of its environment.

Again, I'm going to have to disagree with you Aurelius.
I do agree that halflings aren't able to do most of the things the average player has their halfling do in game but that's something you need to show in game. Halflings are meant to be clearly weaker than humans. But the weight as mentioned in the above excerpt makes perfect sense. Your argument about weight and strength is purely an RP issue players need to be aware of but would not affect the weight as described in their physiology above.
Magical rings, etc., can boost a character's strength magically without making your character's muscles bigger.
EDIT:
Here's an example of what I did with Johanna a while back:
To start off her base strength is 8. This is average for a halfling, though realistically 8 is too high for her. I should have started with 6, but never mind.
To boost her wisdom with gear I bought and equipped two greater rings of wisdom. These rings gave the following adjustments to Johanna's abilities.
> +3 wisdom
> +1 dexterity
> -2 strength
Each!
This made Johanna have to live with 4 strength. That's a -3 strength penalty. Her maximum weight allowance was something like 27 lbs. Yet, some of you may be surprised, but Johanna was still able to run. In other words, I was able to organise my inventory pack to keep below 27 lbs. using just 1 bag of holding, good use of Morgan & Son's, and about 4 greater magic bags.
It's about using your weakness properly. Halflings are NOT strong, agreed. But there is nothing wrong with them being 30 - 40 lbs. in weight.
Obviously if you're going to start your halfling with 20 strength (possible only as a strongheart on Amia, even though this is impossible in standard FR and something I'd petition to change on Amia) Then you're doing something very wrong, in my opinion. It would seem that the only purpose of doing something like that is to get Dev Crit which is something I've never liked seeing a halfling do (especially to giants. I mean, what are they crit hitting that makes them die instantly? Their achilles tendon? shin? big toe?)

Hin standards for strong would differ to Human or dwarf standards for strong. It's simply a matter of height and weight.
For a hin weight lifter, bench pressing 50kg (roughly double the estimated weight you guys estimated Hin weigh) would be seen as amazing. For a human, 50kg is heavy but -can- be lifted in one arm, is effectively half the average male's weight and is laughable.
It's not really fair to compare the two. It's better comparing hin's strength capabilities with gnome or kobold capabilities.

You're not derailing the topic in any way. You're opinion and thought is encouraged.
I just find your reasoning slightly lacking in something.
Here's some food for thought. Generally speaking the smaller an organism, the more they can carry in relation to their body weight. Not only that, but also the amount of food they consume inversely proportionately increases according to their size.
That is not to say that a halfling eats more than a giant. But if a halfling was scaled to the size of a giant and then scaled their food consumption at an equal amount, that food quantity will greatly outweigh that of the giant's sustenance.

yeah, and clearly ants came to mind. but hin arent like that. they dont have different physiology than humans, right? i dont care how coordinated a 3 year old is, they just arent strong enough to do anything. the muscle power does not exist.
im sorry, i just cant see it your way. we dont have to keep talking about it, and i understand your angles, but i just dont agree.
if people want to run around thinking their hin weighs 30-40 pounds, they seriously need to change their RP to involve lots of asking people to carry things, never using anything weighing more than 5 pounds competently, not being able to open full size doors, and getting tossed around by any decent gust of wind. For example, Windys wings should blow them back to the dale. Or at least into the water down there.

I play a buff ass hin and have no problem with it, especially in a fantasy game setting. Strict adherance to real world physics and physiology is a bit to the absurd in a fantasy, sword and sorcery, science fiction world. Many things that exist and happen make absolutely no sense and are completely impossible to justify, they just are. I'm not saying to throw everything out the window, but much I feel needs to be taken with a leap of faith or a "suspention of disbelief" attitude. For an example, try to justify the flight ability of a pegasus with real world physiology or even a dragon for that matter. There are many, many other examples through out D&D world of ludicrous things that we just accept. It would be like watching the next "X-Men" movie and scoffing at Colossus hurling a Wolverine "speed-ball", going "Dude, no way, that's toootally impossible I'm sure..." Well in a comic book world, no that's not impossible.
I do however, play that my hin, Lyam, is much bigger than your average hin in height and weight. I've often refered to him humorously as looking more like a short, skinny dwarf. Standing around 3'10" and weighing in the neighborhood of 75 pounds with thick, corded muscles, a hin version of a power lifter. I used to emote more descriptions of his powerful build and height but grew a bit weary of the flak and stupid OOC comments I would often recieve. Admittedly they usually shut up when they saw the damage he could deal out , but nevertheless it grew wearisome. I still do on occasion give a description of his build, but rarely. Perhaps I should do it more often.
Lyam is a Dev Critter who swings a bastard sword like a greatsword. With his height, arm reach, and four feet of steele he can easily strike most opponents somewhere that will make them crumple and bleed out in short time. That gives him just about over an 8' reach for his sword point. A male frost giant stands about 15' tall, a male fire giant about 12'. That given, Lyam can hit all sorts of funny stuff from the femoral, to straight up the groin into some organs, or even a good old fashioned disembowelment. Maybe the giant over extends himself as he swings on his much shorter opponent and bends over as he recovers his massive great weapon only to impale his eyeball onto a jumping Lyam with sword fully extended upwards to tickle the brain. Alright, a bit of a stretch on that last one but fights are much more dynamic than what the NWN engine has our toons doing. A shorter hin, say 3'2" swinging a shortsword with a 24" blade, arm extended up with aleap between a giants legs could still reach the femoral artery. Only epic characters can have Dev Crit and epic characters can and should be able to do some pretty heroic over the top moves. I know the femoral is not an "instant" death like a beheading, but having it severed will bleed you out in no time and have the giant laying ther trying to staunch the arteriel firehose.
Remember that D&D is not a game setting for gritty realism, but rather high fantasy. A setting where over the top heroics, magic, and fantastical thing happen and exist. Also, NWN = D&D.
...sorry so long, I got into it and wanted to get it all in one fell swoop

Aurelius311, DnD is not trying to emulate RL realism; DnD, as a genre of RP, is trying to emulate the "realism" you'll find in certain movies and comics. If you start thinking about DnD like this, you will eventually go mad. It begins with thinking about how Dragon Disciplies can fly with their petty wingspan, travels through curious musings about the odd BMI of hins and ends up in a padded room.

And technically speaking, no human should be able to lug around 3 tonnes of loot. But all the STR builds can and run with it too.

Yeah, i know there are a ton of these things that make no sense. This one just seemed like an oversight, as opposed to some necessary stretch of realism.

...and presumably Biddle too, when he comes back?

Willow has quiet a bit more strength than your average Hin also for natural reasons that a few people know and a few others don't.

If it makes you feel better, even wizards and Ed admit that they dorked up on Halflings, which is why 4e Halflings and Gnomes are bigger than their predecessors... they've also slowly been upping the size of the halfling and gnome minatures.

In the late of the afternoon after having arranged to meet with Lyle, it is noted that she does not return to the Dale and is not seen by anyone or anything in the vicinity.

A letter and a small parcel wrapped in purple silk is delivered to Bendir Dale, the creamy parchment marked with the word ‘Mayor’ in dried blood ... an expert in the matter would recognise it as hin blood, the seal on the back being purple wax with an octogram, a rune in High Drow at each point representing one of the Eight Tenets of Lloth should any be able to read and recognise this..
The inside of this envelope contains the same thick, beautiful parchment, each bearing a little mark down the bottom authenticating it as real elf skin. This, however, is not as interesting as the content of the letter, written in the same blood:
Mayor,
I must admit my surprise when one of your females attacked me in the Forest of Despair. Feeling hurt by such a lack of respect I took her to teach her manners, and I must admit: she looks like she will make a good pet. She informed me that she is called Bella’donna, First Ranger to the Dale and Councillor to Oakmist Vale. As proof that I have her, there is the silk parcel accompanying this letter – do not fear that it is trapped.
Should you wish her return, I would be more than happy to trade for her – a god pet like this, however, does deserve a fair price. What I require is the name and description of every Drow heretic known by members of the Dale. We will use our scouts to verify the contents of the list you shall send for lies or omissions. Should we discover any, you shall receive a part of her, as proof of my good faith in your eventual understanding.
Knowing that you creatures can be idle, I shall also put this deadline for you – you shall leave the list next to the tree in Amia forest where you find her equipment within the next five cycles. Should you fail this, I shall remove a knuckle and send it to you, meaning that in a month’s time she will be without hands.
I appreciate your understanding in this matter.
Lloth tlu malla.
The last few words are written in the arching runes of High Drow. Should anyone investigate the contents of the silk they would find that it is not trapped and held shut with spider-silk. Upon opening a ponytail of luscious auburn hair would fall out, likely recognisable as the well-kept style of the now-vanished Hin, Belladonna

Lyle possesses the letter and the package, keeping the whole situation hushed. He regularly drops hints among the Shrine refugees that he would "really" like to speak to Master Jud.

The following day Sasha stumbles up to the gates of the Dale, she snaps at anyone who tries to come to close to her.
It would readily be apparent that she has been badly burnt and slowly bleeds from several wounds.
Anyone who enquires would find that she had come from the West, the guards there having spotted her leaving the mylock hills but didnt presume to stop her as they recognised it as being bella's companion.
The panther stumbles over to the fountain and begins to lap from it as slowly the healing powers do their work on her. But then she moves to the door of the town hall and waits there very still fo hours upon end as if listening or waiting for something.

I feel validated, thanks for that solid intel. Seriously.

Late in the afternoon Mezzu would be seen near Sasha by the town hall. He is whispering to her and the panther growls in reply. She nuzzles his hand with her head and then hangs it down low.
Finally she shuffles backwards and looks at him before slinking off towards the inn, apparently to try and rest.

The notice is quickly taken down, by a growling and grumbling miltia captain, Lyam Thornhill. "Bloody 'ells, so much for not sending the Dale into a panic. What in the Nines is that fool thinking puttin' up something like this...." Storms off with a look, searching out Mezzu.

Time passes for Belladonna in a disjointed state. Hours seem like days to her as she tries to remember the warmth and comfort of her home at the Dale she had come to love more than anything in the world.
Her thoughts to her friends and companions at home, most especially to her Sasha. Her mind fights the fatigue that pushes against her with such weight. It would be so much easier to just give in to those that her around her.
She tries to keep her mind active as much as possible, she remembers conversations she has had and people she has met. The battles that she has fought and those very few people that she has loved. For now she passes into a fitful doze and all thoughts are left to run riot

The small dragon returns to the Dale, it makes no effort to conceal itself as it is spotted by the guards outside watching for troll incursions. It carries another envelope in its tiny clawed hands which it delivers to the gate guards.
After this is flaps its wings and swoops off once more, though occasionally it can be seen returning to the Dale and watching quietly.

*Another letter arrives, similar to the first although, thankfully, written in black ink this time*
Dear Mayor,
There are three cycles remaining. I do hope that your list is going well, because I would hate to damage such a wonderful pet, especially one that looks so nice in her new collar.

Sasha continues to pad around the Dale, she wanders lost and alone till she see's one of Bella's friends or companions, upon which time she will move up to them and nuzzle against their hand or side mournfully.
