More than that, even... you might think of her as a combination of those two and bits of Milil and Sune as well, for her role as the goddess of song, dance, and romantic love. But this is not a thread about Sheela. However, if I could kind of "zoom out" a bit for a moment and give an opinion on the hin gods in general... One of the few things I think earlier editions of D&D did better than 3rd and 4th is that they had not yet codified into the character classes the idea that the "default setting" for a character is to single out one specific deity and declare it to be the character's specially chosen patron deity. Characters were assumed to venerate, if not an entire pantheon, then at least the entire alignment-appropriate portion of their pantheon. They'd go through their lives offering praise and worship to whichever deity of their pantheon was appropriate for their situation or activities at any given time: Arvoreen before a battle, Yondalla at the birth of a child, Sheela at a wedding, Cyrollalee when going out among the Tallers, Urogalan at a funeral, et cetera. Characters who called out one specific deity as especially worthy or beloved and dedicated their lives to his/her service were not the norm. This was kind of true even for clerics... a "cleric of Arvoreen" wouldn't have had any game-mechanical differences from a "cleric of Brandobaris," they were both assumed to draw their divine power from the pantheon as a whole. The idea of "specialty priests" was introduced kind of late in 2nd Ed., and kind of cluttered up this idea, and then 3rd Ed killed it completely. I think hin players are better off returning to that earlier mindset. The hin pantheon is unique among the pantheons of the Realms, in that every member has good relations with every other. They're all of compatible alignments, no member has ever been cast out, there aren't any holdouts or loners or castoffs or bitter grudges. This solidarity would be represented among the hin, I think, by having a far smaller proportion of devotees of one singled-out deity than the other races do. I think that in general, hin clerics would believe that the hin community is best served by their cultivating the worship of the pantheon as a whole, rather than by having six separate clergies, even if they'd be six separate but closely interwoven clergies. The default hin religion would be just "hin religion." When a hin is asked which god she worships, she'd answer, "I'm a hin," and she'd be baffled that the human or dwarf asking the question didn't seem to understand. This isn't to say that there wouldn't be *any* hin who chose to narrow their faith down to just one of the six. Johanna or Willow dedicating themselves to Brandobaris or Sheela would be perfectly plausible... just not the norm. While I think it's a great idea to have threads for each of the hin gods, and for our characters to have festivals and holy days that are specially favored by just one of the hin gods, I also think that keeping the unique solidarity of the hin gods in the back of our minds would result in more realistic hin PCs, and serve to emphasize that there are differences between hin and humans that are far deeper than mere size. ^^ Disclaimer: The preceding has been my opinion. Feel free to disagree or ignore, as appropriate.

Hin call themselves Hin. There's really only, I'd say, a scholarly approach to how the terms "Strongheart," "Lightfoot," and "Ghostwise" come in to play. It's a term used to separate people for their way of life really. AlphaWaves wrote: From what I've gathered, the moon plays a major part in a lot of the FR deity venerations. Every New Moon, there's Brandobaris' Tithe whereby all followers hide/store a stolen item in a safe place perhaps never to be seen again (like in a ditch off the road just passed). The idea, I suppose, could come from the main plot of moonlight, and darkness forever fighting. Represented by the moon waxing and waning similar to the never ending rivalry between the two sisters Selune and Shar. Aye. A significant portion of all FR gods have a holy day on full moon days. Dunno why that is, but you might be on to something with the darkness and light thing, good and evil. Think of her as a combination of Silvanus and Chauntea. She's concerned with the wild and the tame pretty equally. And, although the nature aspect is arguably her biggest concern, she's also a goddess of love, romance, beauty, song and dance. And not just that little bit that you quoted. Lizzie wrote: They'd go through their lives offering praise and worship to whichever deity of their pantheon was appropriate for their situation or activities at any given time: Arvoreen before a battle, Yondalla at the birth of a child, Sheela at a wedding, Cyrollalee when going out among the Tallers, Urogalan at a funeral, et cetera. That's still normal, actually. Every time a new Hin building is made, a praise to Urugalan is made. It's Hin tradition to praise the Earth god when building on his domain. Sheela and Yondalla are both praised for the harvest, etc. It's still normal that Hin do that. Not everyone, not just Hin, have patrons, that's true. Many people have a whole set of gods they praise equally. However, even people with patrons praise and worship a host of other gods. Generally speaking, of course. Lizzie wrote: The hin pantheon is unique among the pantheons of the Realms, in that every member has good relations with every other. While the Hin gods are a bit unique, among goodly folk gods, in that there aren't any gods at each others throats or any gods that have been cast out, that's really where the uniqueness ends. Urugalan is very much so a loner and outcast. He doesn't find anything in common with the other Hin gods or really even his own people. Brandobaris wanders so much that he's rarely ever around the other Hin gods. He's a bit of a Gypsy/Nomad. But no, no one's been cast out, no one is evil or even remotely evilish and there aren't any feuds. That can't be said for Human gods, Gnome gods, Elven gods or Dwarven gods.

Though her love for her halflings knows no limits, she holds even greater admiration for her fellow members of the halfling pantheon, sometimes known as Yondalla's Children.
It is Yondalla's wish that all her children are safe and prosperous, treat each other well, and live interesting, full lives. Yondalla is forgiving, slow to anger, and kind, but when her charges become threatened she acts with bravery and ferocity that has gained the respect of even her most warlike godly contemporaries. Yondalla knows that her race represents a truly good creation, and does anything within the boundaries of honor to nurture and protect it. There isn't alot out there about the creation of the individual Deities, so we might assume that they represent aspects of Yondalla. Arvee is the stalwart defender in her. ticket wrote: Off topic: Can someone tell us more about the Ghost Wars? also taken from Bloods work... Feral ghostwise hunters, their faces painted like skulls, prowled the forests in search of halfling prey. For a generation the Lluirwood was a place of death.
In -68 DR, a strongheart hunter named Chand became war chief of his folk and struck an alliance with the war chief of the lightfoot tribe. The two untied to root out the madness of the ghostwise halflings. Over three years each ghostwise stronghold and lair was found out and destroyed, until Chand himself slew Desva of the ghostwise in -65 DR. The fighting was merciless and awful---entire ghostwise villages were burned and their folk killed. Chand held to his purpose and saw to it that no hin warrior stayed his or her hand.
In the aftermath of the Hin Ghostwards, the ghostwise halflings were reduced to a handful of their former number. Most were exiled from the Lluirwood, although a handful who had repudiated Desva and joined with Chand's warriors were allowed to stay. Those who left settled in the Chondalwood, taking an oath never to speak until they had atoned for the animal-like savagery of their past. The atonement is long past, but to this day ghostwise halflings think long and hard before they choose to speak.
Many of the lightfoots, horrified by the Chand and the stronghearts had done, chose to leave the Lluirwood. They became a nomadic people spread across all nor northern Faerun, adopting the customs and traditions of the folk they traveled among.
The stronghearts remained in the Lluirewood. Unchecked by the lightfoot or ghostwise ways, they began to clear the forest and settled in semipermanent villages that grew large and more permanent with each passing generation. They changed from woodland nomads to settled farmers and craftsfolk, defending their lands against numerous invasions and raids over the years. In time some lightfoots returned to the new realm of Luiren, but this is now a strongheart land.

Apologies, Gunz, for not fully quoting you... I didn't mean to contradict you, just to emphasize what you'd said. On the other hand (and at the risk of further derailing what's supposed to be an Arvoreen thread)... o0GuNz_N_RoSeZ0o wrote: While the Hin gods are a bit unique, among goodly folk gods, in that there aren't any gods at each others throats or any gods that have been cast out, that's really where the uniqueness ends. I can't agree with this. The hin pantheon (and I acknowledge that this may be a bit subjective) has a different feel to it than the other pantheons. It feels like they are the only group of gods for whom the protection and nurturing of their beloved race is the purpose for their existence, rather than a by-product of their portfolios. I think this difference is kind of subtle, but important. To pick a random example... in the typical portrayal of a dwarf who worships Dumathoin, you don't find a lot of emphasis on Dumathoin's love of dwarvenness for its own sake. Rather, Dumathoin loves mithral and mining and gems, and the dwarves love those things as well, and *therefore* the dwarves worship Dumathoin, and he watches over them. Likewise with, say, Silvanus: druids aren't favored and empowered by Silvanus because he cares about the druids themselves; rather, Silvanus cares about nature and its Balance, and it's because the druids also care for nature and its Balance that Silvanus empowers them to work towards his purposes. If a druid stopped caring about the Balance, or a dwarf stopped caring about mining, then Silvanus or Dumathoin would stop caring about them. The hin don't seem to have that intermediate step between them and their gods. They don't seek to nurture and protect the hin because of anything the hin tend to do or not to do, they nurture and protect the hin simply because they are hin. Where an elf who becomes a lumberjack will probably be forsaken by the Seldarine, no choice of occupation or lifestyle (with the probable exception of turning to outright evil) could drive a hin from the good graces of their gods. Being a hin is enough, because each hin god is a god of "hin-ness," and where other gods put their portfolios first, hin gods value "hin-ness" as much as any other aspect of their domains: so, Kelemvor may be the warden of the dead, but Urogalan is the warden of dead hin, and only hin. Helm may be the god of defenders, but Arvoreen is the god of defenders of hin, and only of hin. The dwarven and elven pantheons approach this type of focus, but I don't think they quite get there. While those pantheons stand together (more or less), they seem to focus outwards, on the aspects of the world that impact or threaten or enhance their domains. The hin gods stand together and focus inward, on each other and on their chosen race. All of this is why this... o0GuNz_N_RoSeZ0o wrote: Urugalan is very much so a loner and outcast. He doesn't find anything in common with the other Hin gods or really even his own people. ... just feels kind of off, to me. Urogalan's relationship to his own people is the only thing he exists for, the only thing he cares about. The dead of the other races can look after themselves, or they can go rot in the Wall, for all Urogalan cares. He exists only for the hin. And it's that focus that tightly binds him to the rest of his pantheon, and them to him. His solemnity may make him a bit of an oddball among his more lighthearted brothers and sisters, but he still thinks of himself as one of the family, and they think of him the same way. P.S.: Apologies for being a bit long-winded on this, but this very thing is one of the big reasons I love playing my hin character.

My suggestion is to put up an ooc "Hin Lore" Thread and do the discussions on there, much like the Gen Discussion lore thread, but relating to hin. That'll keep the festival ones more pertinent.

um, answering prim, the ghostwars happened around 10ish years ago icly, I forget the exact date, i think I put that up there >_> (1368? or something.)
the chondalwood was hectic and the elves persuaded the hin to join them and to put it simply, kill all humans. alot of druids left, alot stayed, and obviously the ones who left we're either in tears or disgusted with what they saw. (thus why, elves, no trust...find out ic...) started out as saving the forest but as you can guess for most of the clans it wasn't worth it, I have to assume the forest took a beating.
other than that the lore is -vague-... I am not sure who won either...google for 'ghostwise halfling dnd', ghostwars is non existant in searches.
if that is wrong or someone can elaborate please do, could use a seperate thread on it...
--
regarding the hin pantheon as a whole, I first thought it was one god to a class, but on closer inspection its not entirely true, but its close. Im pretty sure avoreen would be pretty sick of the more carefree sort of deitys...not the word i'm looking for but I hope that makes sense. that said I think they would have more of an issue with other pantheons than in fighting. on a whole the hin pantheon edges toward good more than evil, thats one difference between other deitys. it doesn't outright exclude evil but I think you'd have trouble making a hin necro with hin gods.
also ooo...the fact that yondalla gets along with garl glittergold is enough to anger pretty much any kobold, but i'd like to pass that one to dustspray, since thats where I first heard about that, icly =D
holy triple ninja...yes make an ooc lore thread for hin, please do.

@ Lizzie: I feel like you're romanticizing your like for the Hin race a little too much to the point where you're thinking these things, but they're just not so. Elven gods are the most expanded on, arguably, of all the "Race" gods -- that being, compared to Hin, Gnomes and Dwarves. The Seldarine wouldn't damn an Elf lumberjack by default. I think that's a little harsh and there's no proof of that at all. Even Elves use wood, after all. All the race gods love their races because they're kin. Hin are generally more warm than other races, true, but that doesn't mean they love their race any more or any less than Elven gods, Dwarven gods and Gnomish gods do their own respective peoples. Love is shown in different ways, it just so happens that Hin are usually very hearty, warm, loving and all that. In regards to Urogalan, the books hints and even directly contradict what you're suggesting. Here are a few lines from the Faiths and Pantheons book for you to consider:

She loves the whole Hin pantheon though, but has a very special place in her heart for Sheela for obvious reasons. Willow by no means limits her worship to one god. Hell, none of my PC's limit their worship to one god, or even two gods. They all pray, worship and respect multiple gods.

No. The ghostwars lasted from -68 DR to -65 DR. lasting for 3 years and was not 10 years ago. It was over 1400 years ago. From the campaign setting 3rd Edition. Quote: Thousands of years ago, Luiren was an unsettles wilderness roamed by the three great halfling tribes: the lightfoots, the stronghearts, and the ghostwise. I recognize that that's a 2nd Edition sourcebook, and so it wouldn't at first glance seem as relevant as your more recent citations, but the reason I think it's extremely relevant to Amia in specific is that most if not all of the dogma blurbs that appear on the shrines and idols in the Amia deity system are lifted directly from this book, word for word. So it's this source, as much as any other, that seems to have defined for Amia who the gods are and how they think and feel. (And yes, how I personally think and feel about them.) That book says things like: p. 175 wrote: Urogalan is on good terms with the rest of the halfling pantheon, particularly Yondalla, Arvoreen, and Sheela, though the holds himself somewhat removed from their carefree way of life. p. 172 wrote: Sheela is on good terms with the rest of the halfling pantheon, particularly Urogalan in his aspect as the Lord in the Earth ... p. 162 wrote: Of the halfling gods, Arvoreen is most closely aligned with Yondalla, Cyrollalee, and Urogalan ... So the least that can be said, I think, is that even if what I'm preaching about the hin gods is not true now, it used to be true, and recently enough that hin old enough to remember the "good old days" of 2nd Ed might feel the same as I do. Edit: I guess I should have read the 3rd Ed source more closely before posting. Two of the three quotes I cited from the 2nd Ed source are repeated almost verbatim in the 3rd Ed source, as are most of the "Dogma" paragraphs. I think it's safe to continue to assert that canon lore is capable of supporting my point of view.

I want to say I think this thread rocks by the way! Thaks Alpha and all you hin lovers throwin' down your contributions. I am glad to see a general feeling that hin should love and respect all of Yondalla's Children, even if they might hold one a little closer to heart. I have always played my hin with that in mind and even a bit further to respect dieties outside of the hin pantheon. Willie even ran around Toril wearing Shaundakul's symbol beneath is shirt before he dove into his Harlequin motley. Lyam on the other hand finds himself leaning toward Arvoreen wich fits his desire and drive to protect his kin and his very serious approach to his martial training. With that in mind he has still always given respect and prayers when fitting to all Her Children. I'm out before I babble on...

Might have been the Drizzet books, or it was the Dragonlance...anyone remember? I don't recall a book where the gnome was a featured character.

"On the Seventh day of Marpenoth Bendir Dale will be celebrating Highharvestide at the Harvest Moon on that night. All that are willing to help organise the event please sign up on the board in the Town Hall. ~MJH" A sheet entitled "Harvest Moon Committee" is pinned up in the hall ready for residents and friends to sign up. ((7th October (8th for those east of GMT) The time for the actual event will be quite late for me. I won't be home until around midnight on that night (GMT+1) So it's likely to start around that time. 00:30 for me in UK, which is 23:30 GMT. 19:30 for east coast USA, etc, etc...))

Belladonna is not seen at any of the recent festivals. It would be noted as odd for her not to show up for them as the playful little halflings sense of fun had always drawn her to such. It can only be assumed that other matters are keeping her away from them.

Volunteers,
Our first duty will be to start digging out a ravine and eventually combining it with the lake.
In addition to building, we'll need some rope and wood to secure the walls of the new lake, and trees to root the dirt and prevent the houses from falling in. I'll take an exact measurement and figure how much wood we'll need. We'll dig on the border of Mylock territory first, so be sure to have at least two heavies on guard and certainly don't work alone. In the next few days, we can meet and line out exactly what's next.
