I've seen one or two Hobgoblin players around the server and I got a bug buzzing in my head about them now. Sadly, they can't change their outfits like normal characters (the one main drawback to them for me) but, I can't seem to shake the thought of an organized hobgoblin mercenary camp...its just one of those things that has grabbed me and won't let go....

So, I'd like to get feedback on playing an hobgoblin...how many do it...would like to...would think making a group like this would be worth it...or even try it.

Bear in mind, I have decided to make one...I have to get this out of my system and well, this will be the only way...but I would like to get feedback on the general RP to try to get more "into" him...

I will have to limit myself to three characters I think...possibly 4...and I know which ones I think I will use...two are no brainers, Ced and Krugan....I think Terra and the Hobber will be the others...

Anyhoo....thanks in advance for the input...

Personally, I've never seen any hobgoblin players. If you could point them out to me, I would definitely take pictures and look for dragon players, too!

Seriously, though, a group of hobgoblin characters would be interesting - though I say that from a point of view of someone who won't be taking part as one of the characters. From an outside perspective, I also think it would be difficult. There have been organized groups of other monster races, but it wouldn't seem realistic unless they were evil and actually acted like the monsters they are. I think it could be very fun to come across them, if a bit dangerous!

Vaurg is the one I see more often, he runs with a half orc Terra ran with. In fact, that is how I met him, she pulled her sword on him in Cordor and was promptly told by Bria to stop that...lol...

I was actually just being silly and picking on you for making it look like the players were hobgoblins, rather than the characters. :D

LOL...well, in some cases....*snicker*

*thinks* Well...not hobgoblins so much...trolls...yeah....

What I have in mind is something like a faction that is a merc company made up of Hobgoblins that end up taking over the Goblin Caves near Cordor as they base camp...or maybe the DMs would populate there with them....they could be the hobgoblins that vanished from the Forest of Despair.

In concept: a great idea to have!

In practice however a lot more difficult.
The half-monsters we have are mostly less popular.
Hence why most of them evil ones that wish to group up have a mix of the different races. (I leave the goodly ones out since they just assimilate into the other cultures)

In my own view they are fun to play and level and have mischief with, but I find it much harder to find longer term goals for those kind of characters and as such to find rp diversity. Simply the three B's alone (Blood, Beer and of course Boobies) are a meagre ground to expand on.

Unless of course you get into half-assimilations (turning half good), smarter characters (the subterfuge evil) or digging deep into the cultural background of the race (which is often sparse).

What a coincidence!

I'm not a hobgoblin player (though I can point one out to you if you're not already aware--Aagk Hornblack I believe, played by Maglorine), but I did recently start a goblin and I'm dreaming big.

The thing is, you should be wary of basing a faction around a single race, UNLESS that race is both extremely popular AND cohesive, thus placing many players as potential recruits. For example, elves and drow are especially popular (less so the latter of late - we're expanding, though!), humans not so much due to incohesiveness and general ubiquitousness. Dwarves are good but suffer greatly from alt-itis (in my experience to play a dwarf in a way that's enjoyable makes it hard to break the stereotype, and the lack of versatility is unsustainable for a main - your mileage may vary), so you can't expect a reliable playerbase. This thing is a problem for a lot of one-race factions, actually.

Since I do want to see hobgobs around more though, I would propose a simple alternative. Take more than just hobgobs, but other goblinoids too, also orcoids! (half-orcs, orogs, ogrillions... full orcs if there ever are any!) I know, the idea of a group of hobs-and-only-hobs is appealing, but the reality is your faction will be doing a hell of a lot more by opening your recruitment up. This is sort of what I'm doing; I'm in the early stages of forming a goblin clan, and to bolster numbers/interaction I've had the characters reach out to chromatic dragonkin (reason being IC). Sure, by the end I might not have a clan of goblins as such, but if it ends up generating RP then I've done something right. ...Uh, this isn't shameless advertising, it's just an example. ...Honest!

*Please excuse slight incoherence in this post. Hunger, fatigue and enthusiasm plague me.

Well, I didn't mean to sound like its "hobgoblin only"....the idea is just a buzz in my brain right now and for all intensive purposes...maybe a DM might pick it up and populate the goblin caves again. (I never spawn anything there)

For the faction, I was really thinking "monster" subraces like kobolds, goblins, hobgoblins, Half Orcs and the like...possibly humans...but no elves, dwarves, halflings...etc....

Again, I am seeing the feedback to see if there is enough interest to warrant it and what the overall feeling toward the RP this could generate.

Ah, apologies for the assumption then. Yeah, a sort of "monstrous faction" so to speak, should work. Though there might be issues of cooperation, but that can be handled IC. PvP is likely, both within the group and against outsiders, and that can either be handled well or poorly depending on any number of factors. Just be prepared for that, but I probably don't need to tell you about that.

For my part I have a small handful of people more or less into the sort of area you're looking into, if that helps. So there is budding interest, perhaps enough to grow into something workable. Goblins are kind of popular at least as far as these sorts of races go, so you could probably get a few of those in. Kobolds too, though there are more goodish kobolds than I'm comfortable with (nothing against the players, this is just how the dynamic goes I guess!).

Uh, that's about all I have to say on this for now. I look forward to working with you in this area in future, perhaps!

Great idea!
I was playing today the orig. campaign and thought would be awesome to play an orc or goblinoid. I did not find the orc as a choosable subrace :(
As for the faction I would just go with serbiris` idea and let orcoids (including half-orc) and goblinoids to join, but I would leave the humans, outsiders out.

Kobolds and Goblins kinda have a thing against eachother on Amia, btw.

I played a hobgoblin for a while and their alot more fun to me out of the other Monster PC's. Sense their smarter you tend to be able interact with more people. Not to mention the Hobgoblin racial culture is more fun :D Tyrannical warmongers an all. As for the goblin caves the buck-tooth tribe tends to go up and down. All dependant on how things are really

Hmm...I did notice that in the spawns...but what I was thinking is the "lost" Hobgoblins would be "found" in the caves.

In short, they moved out of the way being smart enough to know they are not going to win against demons.

The merc company is more or less the "trainers" that got them to move...or something like that.

If the caves are indeed being used, well...then that kinda scraps that thought.

Would the PC races have that kind of animosity? I mean, I see an AWFUL lot of "good" kobolds running around Cordor these last few weeks. That is not typical either given kobolds are LE like Hobgoblins...but, this is more a brainstorming idea for the moment...

I don't have a Hobgoblin, though I would've made one if I could get over the fact that they look like they're skating when they walk.

Hobgoblins usually have a pseudo-tribal-city-state lifestyle but mercenary bands are similar in structure sometimes, they usually stick to being Hobgoblin/goblinoid/slaves of other races only but I think for this allowing other races would be best as long as they aren't Kobolds or Elves or something like that.

The Chieftain, who's the final word on everything, has his Overlords who act as a council, lead the men, and as personal Bodyguards to the Chieftain. In a tribe there's rites of challenge over anything from ownership of something to leadership but these aren't considered too much in mercenary life because it lowers numbers but still ~there.
So 3-4 hobgoblins would be perfect to start a band, any people who want to hop on the wagon of their band would be welcomed. A leader, his couple of 'elites' who are leaders in of themselves.

Hobgoblins usually have more emphasis on being hired out for actual wars by [blank country/tribe/city]. On Amia you'd be more of a hired [class]. If there's a wizard that needs protection on the way to a meeting they'd hire your fighters. Or if someone needs a trapper or door opener or what have you, they'd hire your scouts. If a fighter needs buffs they'd hire your casters.
The way I would pull this off is start off by trying to group people together and be someone people can come to and say "Hey I need a meatshield to hit stuff for me." I wouldn't go so far as crafting/job diversity so to stay out of the Copper Industries' territory unless you're looking for Conflict which would be cool.

I see I've been summoned .....

Been enjoying my playing time with Aagk thus far. I personally think Hobgobs are an unappreciated subrace. They can do well in groups as long as the pecking order is established. They make good mercs and can get along passably well in human cultures, if not the refined and civil ones. I play mine as being commanding enough to give orders and disciplined enough to take them, depending on the situation. They're smart enough to have some versatility and the ones who end up adventurers are survivors of a clan culture that would turn an elf into a quivering mass of jelly, sucking his widdle thumb while curled in the fetal position. Yes, I'm looking at you Winya.

As far as groups, I had no plans and didn't build him with any endgame in mind so we'll see where it leads. 8)

It's the same in standard FR. The reason for this is part antagonistic culture, part shared environment and thus resource/territory competition. People might wish to play it differently here, perhaps as a deep-seated hatred which may or may not be justified/surmountable - with my gob I try to approach it reasonably, perceiving that there are bigger fish to fry and that he's well-fed enough to not have an issue with any kobs who don't seem to be moving in on any ground he's taken for himself. So there's no reason evil kobs can't work with goblinoids - they should, because the evil-driven races don't have enough numbers to be all that choosy about their allies.

We actually had a small problem with this in the OV - the kobolds we dealt with had issues with svirf gnomes (which is both a religious and pragmatic thing, so deep-seated makes perfect sense) and goblins, both races which we also wanted to deal with. IG it didn't seem largely problematic, but it did make us wary with recruitment.

Hired goons is good, though in practice it's not that easy to actually get it going (and not many would be willing to pay for the services... share of loot might be fine though). Or maybe it is easier for American players.
I wouldn't be worried about competition with Copper Industries, though--their management firmly refuses to deal openly with perceived evil, so if you could build up a reputation and a network of contacts you've got something going. And conflict is good! Shouldn't say too much on that though.

The closest to a '(half) monster' faction was the buck-tooth tribe or something along those lines, that I can recall. You could always try and revive that.

One thing I always wanted to do was start off as a lesser monster race and play it as a pure scavenger... only things you can use is what you find or what you can make... get a few players start off at level 2 no starter quests ditch everything in your inventory except for maybe a simple weapon like a dagger and such and see how far you can go...

OMG PVP WHORE!

...That wasn't spam. Hobgoblins tend to be fierce creatures, you see. One can easily mistake the proper RP of one as PvP-whoring.

Yeah I forgot to mention that, their 'payment' would be a share of the loot.
This sort of setup is good for when there is a event, DM or player, and you need bodyguards or minions or troop fillers this group would be perfect for people looking.

Though uh, when someone showed me the subrace list the first thing I did was make a Hobgoblin, then got sad because of how the animations break when you walk. Next to Dwarves, Gnomes, and sometimes Orogs, Hobgoblins are the best thing in my mind.
With others I'd totally remake him. Though I might do it anyway when Knight Commander becomes a thing.

I got encouraged enough to make him last night, had to take a couple of tries as the numbers jump around. Got lucky and got a skin that works for him right off the bat.

Kinda bummed the ACP don't work for him either, just get standard NwN animations....

I was wondering if you can reskin him with DCs so he actually can have changeable skin like a normal PC or if that is just something that cant be scripted at all? Or too much time into it?

That would work...but I still want him a hobber....he is fun.

In just the hour or so I played him, he got into a great RP with a pair of elves...who started out disgusted with him and by the end one was yelling at him to go and the other was nearly to the point of leaving....this is the tailor shop mind you...lol (can't spell their names but it was great fun guys)

Had a few more too where he basically played the stupid hobber...typical variety...even though he has a 14 int...heh

He is very smart and knows a few languages...but why give a potential enemy any knowledge...right?

Hmmm, I actually feel bugbear would have been a better race myself, its similar enough to Hobgoblin, but has more variety in look.

That would work too...is there a way to redo his skin though with DCs so he can have a "look" like most PCs?

You mean a dynamic look? Only way is to go Half-Orc and equip stuff at the moment. We haven't bothered to put anymore dynamic stuff in as we have a policy to not remove any subraces that have been in for a long time, and are not intending to put any new ones in.

If you mean a skin, yes, there's a DC cost on it. See the request stickies.

Yes, I was thinking the dynamic look so that he retains the "hobgoblin" subrace but could actually dress in different ways.

Given he is a monk and Shadow Dancer...I am thinking he might go with a "ninja" look sometimes and a "normal monk" look other times.

That's not possible with the hobgoblin skin...

Given he is a monk and Shadow Dancer...I am thinking he might go with a "ninja" look sometimes and a "normal monk" look other times.

That's not possible with the hobgoblin skin...

Yea, only way is to get permission to change to the half-orc phenotype.

That works fine...and will be a goal for him. I think the cost is 10 DC for a perm reskin if I read this right.

And it will be a bit...he isn't stupid (14 int) but, he has not RPed enough to be fully ready for that yet either...besides, its kinda fun to see people reacting to him...and his look does fit a monkish fighter.

One thing I have noticed is the ACP doesn't work on him either in the hobgoblin skin....

Nothing about that model can change apart from weapon/shield placement and, of course, spell effects.

Nothing wrong with the Half-Orc phenotype. Get the Amian headpack and you're laughing.

hobgoblins used to be a big part of the bucktooth clan faction of monster race pcs before the members left the server or what have you. try searching our topics (i have quite a few myself) and im sure youll find instances of rp. i wrote a lot of our rp down into paragraph form, so if your looking for inspiration you can always use that. id gladly do this in game but i dont have much time to play right now =[

I understand this. The main server at work died yesterday morning early and they had never let me get a backup domain server. Needless to day the company was down and out all day and I had to work my arse off getting a new server and then getting it up.

Now I got my backup but I got to repair it....so time was an issue..and will be.

I will find the topic though and read through them. THANKS!
