I requested it several times in-game, but I never posted on the forum, so I don't have "proof," unless one of the DMs I asked can remember.

I'm glad this is gone. I wont go into detail but it was just being abused and wasting DM time.

This. Because you need 15 DCs for a max level rebuild, which is pretty expensive if you just wanna throw some skillpoints around, take a crafting feat or whatever.

I don't know what the big deal is. A full "relevel" type of rebuild takes under 10 seconds for a DM client afaik. Sounds like someone just made it too complicated for the team.

EDIT: Let me rephrase before someone goes ballistic on me.

As far as i know, the process of deleveling a character to 1 and then even giving the xp back is 10 seconds for a DM that is already in game. The lack of the latter as part of the service is something that comes from the DM's not wanting to allow players to min-max their builds conveniently as they go i'm guessing. This won't prevent people from playing powerbuilds, this will prevent people who are not very skilled in building to compete with those who are.

In my opinion, the rebuild procedure on this server was, and now is even more, complicated. I know that it was most probably to avoid DM's being nagged at all times for rebuilds. Right now however, if someone makes a mistake during leveling and is unable to take a feat he was planning to take due to requirements, he's forced to spend DC's. That's harsh. People make those mistakes.

Just my 2 cents.

....

No, you just get deleveled and self rebuild back up.
Or you request a total self rebuild. It's really not that complicated and I don't see why people complained about this.

Self rebuilds are not that big of a deal, because it's easy to level back up (and fun).

That's the point. Some people don't consider paying dearly [with time or DC's] for a mistake that can be easily fixed fun.

[to make it clear, no, i don't need a rebuild]

See I can agree that leveling can be annoying at times when you can't find people to party with. Sometimes, even, the grind is boring. But with RP it's fun.

And that is the key point. By a self rebuild, you are able to interact with newer groups of people/chars on a basis you might not normally. Yes, it is very possible to interact with them normally. I have chars that do that, one does it a lot. But for things like exploring and hunting you cannot usually. I even find enjoyment in unlocking my chars new powers (especially for casters). So by doing a selfer you get thrown back into the mix of new and old. You can observe how someone fights, find new rising good/evil stars, etc.

So to me, it provides a new learning experience for both your char and yourself.

And, again, you can relevel in a month (or even a week) depending on your dedication. So it's really not that much time in the grand scheme of things Amian.

While i completely agree with you that leveling indeed is part of the fun, i have to say that this is not really the point.

There is no choice here. There should be.

Individual people, individual choices.

You want to get your character through the leveling process again to enrich the story? You got it.

You want to get through with the grind already so that you get the epic feat you waited for so long, and your character shines and is ready to play the role you made for him? Well, you can't because you screwed up something and you have to make 100k xp again.

Think about it.

The best thing to do is to plan ahead. Make a step-by-step build for you to follow to avoid mistakes. Ask the fisherman's thread if in doubt and always keep an eye on what you are doing when leveling up. Some mistakes can be fixed in time by deleveling to 1xp from the level you grabbed a wrong feat or similar.

Quite common to have a mishap every now and then. And 1 DC for a quick two levels isn't much to pay, really.

Don't talk about the process when you're not a DM and you don't know it, please. You can't simply do it via the radial menu. Well, you can, but the odds of you scrrewing it up is very high. There's also items to worry about moving over, making sure variables remain set from quests and other module important things, and etc. We use an automated system, but it still does take a little time.

n.b.: I voted for free rebuilds to never happen... as did a couple others. So had it happened differently some time ago, you'd not even got them at all.

The trick with D&D is when it was tabletop you didnt have time for sessions where you sit around a city contemplaiting the meaning of life. You had an adventure and a 1:1 DM-Group situation and away you went.

NWN has broken that forumlae soundly over its knee in giving the people the ability to constantly at all hours of a day grow and expand their character so after enough time its only logical to think your dude should be branching out.

The problem is after enough time its less branching out and more "I AM THE SKILL BORG your unique character traits will be incorporated into us!"

Free rebuilds were a neat idea, and nice to have, but not having them im not sheding any tears either. It make sense to have a persons world choices affect them more then "Welp paladining was fantastic, now lets see what this warlockery is all about."

I wont even get into the massive devalued mortality rate between D&D and NWN. Has anyone had a PnP Character last even a fraction of what they've had a NWN pc last? If you arent doing a new character sheet each night your DM is doing it wrong.

Well, considering in PnP you dont play the character day by day chillin' by the market... and that timeskips are pretty normal in PnP, the NWN pcs last longer because they die like 10 times before morning comes and its barely even a setback.

Face on fire, legs broken and 8 arrows in your chest? Man up and walk it off.

But I'm kinda new, I never got to do a free rebuild, but it seems pretty nice. You can bend that character all you want but the stats stay the same.

I disliked free rebuilds because it was counter-intuitive towards what this server is and that is a Roleplay server.

A self-rebuild requires the character to go out, re-level and hopefully roleplay towards their new build. During a self rebuild the character meets other characters and has potential to create new RP oppurtunities with a variety of other characters both new and old.

A DC rebuild is using rewards from past RP to rebuild your character. You effectively spend rewards for your efforts in the game, to augment those efforts and progress your character story.

Free-rebuilds were not a reward for RP, nor did they offer any benefit to creating new RP oppurtunities the majority of them being used to refine builds and the waste of time was invariably when folk were denied a free and offered a selfer instead they would argue and refuse the free and the time wasting became exponential.

The waste of time was only a minor part of it.

Thumbs up!

Neverwinter Nights is excessively easy build-wise as compared to NWN2. In the latter, for example, you can't save more than 5 skill points, got a crapload of classes not to mention some servers have 40+ available classes.

Also, Amia...quite seriously....it's far from hardcore in regards to leveling. I'm pretty sure 95% of characters reach ECL 30 within 6 months of playing, and that is with focus on RP above anything else. And I feel i'm being conservative. My Tief got from 1 to 27 in around 4 months and I was out of battle about 80% of the time spent on the server. I've known some to go from 1 to 30 in 2-3 weeks.

And say you have to delevel to level one, in the worse case scenario.... with all the gold and items you can afford, summon 8 scrolls, etc, would make it even more of a breeze to level back up.

And seriously ... where the rebuilds used for -only- RP, majorly? Let's be frank. Some of them where. I'd bet most of us adjusted our RP and made efforts to -twist- our characters story as to justify a rebuild which made our chars more -efficient- or -powerful-, either in PVM or PVP or both.

Now- For a next step in the right direction I would suggest:

- Xp halved upon reaching level 21+
- Lower xp gained to allow an average of maybe 15-20 xp per kill, and that would be tough monsters
- Put an xp cap of 1000 xp X level per 24 hours realtime
- Augment the death xp penalty
- Upon death instill a one hour waiting time where we care caught in the fugue plane, to make death more relevant
- Remove + 5 items altogether
- Remore half the leyline nodes
- Make planetouched and other special races "application only"
- Characters would need to have a minimum of 3 levels in each class they take
- Maximum of 10 skill points saved upon level up at any given time
- Resting could only be done in certain areas in the game, devoid of any danger
- Level 7,8,9 spellcasting would cost, in reagents, 25, 50 and 100 gold respectively.
- Some epic bosses would instill a - 1 level penalty upon dying.

In compensation, DM'S would grant a bronze, silver, or gold xp compensation with each DC they grant, depending on the quality of RP.
Bronze= 500 Silver= 1000 Gold= 2000

Now -THAT- would be a hardcore RP server.

Seriously, I felt as if free rebuilds where kind like ... a kid at a restaurant with his parents who says he doesn't like his meal 'cause Mommies looks better, so Mommy buys him another meal.

We where -spoiled-.

PS: The tone of my post was meant as mild irony, and not meant to be offensive to anyone. I know my suggestion would never happen, they're too extreme. The DM's and builders are doing a GREAT job.

When we first started Amia it was supposed to be a casual leveling server for the very reason that limiting xp does have a very real impact upon the player base, a noticeable one, and that punishing people for lag spike deaths, unlucky breaks or just straight up getting killed wasnt something we were interested in.

And I have seen no actual tangible proof that slow leveling = better rp. Where as some of the better roleplayers do just like to blow through to 30 and then focus specifically on rp on that one character for months if not years.

As an aside if someone is determined enough it wouldnt even take a week. The server Amia was spawned from I got into some trouble with the DM's (Shocking I know right?) and was deleveled to one, in a typical childish manor I ground away at levels until I was 30, when I looked at the system clock after that last ding I realised it had only been 23 hours from level 1 to level 30.

And it was roughly equal if not less xp back in those days. A very passive agressive 'fuck off' if ever there were one.

That made me lol

What i'm thinking right now is, right, 23 hours really is quick to level back to 30.

In a DM's perspective, making a player waste 23 hours of his time to level back to 30 ... well, it's quite a punishment, still!

I certainly would learn my lesson if a mistake cost me 23 hours! lol

Think of all the things 23 hours can allow one to do in real life.

But fine, if, in your own way, you had the impression of having some "revenge". Nobody got hurt in the process.

:P
