Hello, Amians!

For a couple years now, I've been a sort of "go-to gal" for dragon disciple lore. This was not because I asked to be one or anything like that, but perhaps because of my particular interest and specialization on the subject (See: Zelly).

So, for those who are interested, I have decided to post a bit of a write-up I have made for dragon disciple lore, as it is accepted on Amia. While it has gone through the ringer known as Tormak, and he gave me permission to post this, I want to point out that this is as of this point from the perspective of a player. I would one day like to see a similar post in the Rules & Lore forum, but that's not up to me, of course! Until (if) such a post is made, this is merely player-gathered lore that is largely the most accepted information on the class, and nothing more official than a player's wish to help out those people who want to know more about dragon disciples.

Now! If anyone has questions, feel free to ask! I'm not gonna ask for this to be one of those locked topics that no one can talk about. :D

Dragon Disciples

A dragon disciple is a distant descendent of a specific dragon bloodline. On Amia, this bloodline can be any of the standard ten dragon types within the metallic and chromatic categories, as well as the planar shadow dragon type. The metallics are brass, bronze, copper, gold, and silver. The chromatics are black, blue, green, red, and white. Other dragon types that fall outside of these dragon bloodlines must be requested before the character is made in-game.

Creating a Dragon Disciple

The Path is Always Deliberate

Before you take Dragon Disciple levels, you should do research on your chosen dragon bloodline in order to avoid straying outside the boundaries of these diverse dragon species. A dragon disciple must willingly and actively pursue the path of the disciple, consciously becoming more like their distant ancestor. It is not a decision that another can make. Nor is it something that can be forced on the disciple. This is due to the intense mental, emotional, and physical link required for the blood to be activated and awakened.

Innately magical, the blood of a dragon cannot be awakened fully unless the disciple is fully aware of the implications and the meaning behind the action. All rituals, meditation, or other manners of awakening the blood are directly linked to the ancestor dragon's personality, mindset, and habits. As such, it is also impossible for the disciple to believe he is the descendent of a gold dragon, only to find after awakening the blood that he is actually descended from a red dragon. Doing good deeds and delving into the habits of a gold dragon will do nothing to awaken distant red dragon blood.

Now, that isn't to say that you can't RP that the first one or two levels happened without your character's knowledge. That's a popular route. It essentially means that your character has acted in accordance with their draconic ancestor and it resonated with their dragon blood and caused it to spark into something greater. But beyond those one or two levels, it becomes a decision. No one can accidentally devote themselves to their ancestor dragon enough to sprout wings and take on the half-dragon template.

A Correlation Between Levels and Power

Another point to take into consideration when creating your dragon disciple is that the stronger the disciple's blood becomes - the more levels he attains through rituals, meditation, or other means - the closer he is drawn to behaving, seeing, feeling, and appearing as his ancestor dragon. For example, a human with two levels of (green) Dragon Disciple may not be as fierce, bloodthirsty, and evil as a human with ten levels of (green) Dragon Disciple, but he is still being drawn down that path, and by taking the first steps (two levels) he has already begun a dark and evil journey which could very well change his personality and outlook.

Removing Dragon Disciple Levels

Finally, and very importantly, once your character has taken dragon disciple levels, the character can never revert to their previous self. They don't lose dragon disciple levels. Once the character has become something entirely different through the path of the dragon disciple, they are literally governed by the bloodline they have awakened. They can't simply "Fall" and lose their dragon traits. They don't change their mind and want nothing to do with their blood anymore. Once it is awakened, the magical blood of their dragon ancestor takes control of the character and molds him into someone else entirely. They are proud of their blood. They never doubt it. Dragon pride is something that comes along with the blood, and good and evil dragon kind alike share this trait. They are not ashamed. They don't come to hate it. Whether for power or understanding, the path of the dragon disciple is a permanent one.

The Dragon Bloodlines

Here is basic information regarding alignment and personality of each of the openly allowed dragon bloodlines. When choosing your character's bloodline, you will want to remember Amia's accepted one-step rule for dragon disciples – meaning that the disciple's alignment must match the dragon's, or be at most one step away from it in any direction. The alignment is essential, as it is very clearly defined in dragon lore. For more in-depth information, see both the Monster Manual (v3.5) and the Draconomicon, the sourcebooks from which this information is taken.

Metallic Dragons

Brass Dragons
Alignment: CG
Disciple Alignments: CG, NG, CN
Lair Locations: Deserts, Arid Regions
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Fire

"The most gregarious of all the true dragons, brass dragons are famous (some would say infamous) for their love of conversation." – Draconomicon, pg. 40

These dragons are extremely friendly and talkative, known for their extensive love (and need) to communicate with all manner of creatures – particularly humanoids. While some may consider them very humble (for a dragon), brass dragons actually believe themselves to be so skilled in conversation that they cannot bear the thought of a sentient creature missing out on the honor of speaking with it. They enjoy news of local events and keep vast networks of informants and confidantes so that they are kept up to date with what is going on around them. Brass dragons smell of hot metal or desert sand, a tangy odor.

Bronze Dragons
Alignment: LG
Disciple Alignments: LG, NG, LN
Lair Locations: Islands, Tropical Coasts
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Electricity

"Bronze dragons have a strong sense of justice and do not tolerate cruelty or anarchy in any form." – Draconomicon, pg. 42

These dragons are righteous, benevolent creatures who go out of their way to assure the happiness and survival of all sentient beings – especially those they may call "lesser" creatures. They vehemently believe in altruism and moral order among all living beings. Endlessly curious, they also spend their time in assumed forms which will allow them to observe humanoid creatures. The diverse personalities and cultures of the Realms fascinate them to no end. Bronze dragons smell like the sea.

Copper Dragons
Alignment: CG
Disciple Alignments: CG, NG, CN
Lair Locations: Mountains, Dry Uplands
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Acid

"Copper dragons have a well-deserved reputation as incorrigible pranksters, joke-tellers, and riddlers." – Draconomicon, pg. 44

These dragons prefer humor and wit above all else. Clever to no end, they are good-natured and friendly, though suffer a prominent miserly streak. They have a tendency to annoy and humiliate their enemies, rather than fight them, and grow annoyed themselves when sentient creatures do not take well to being the target of their tricks and pranks. They are social creatures and constantly seek out the company of other beings with whom they can share their wit. Copper dragons have a stony scent.

Gold Dragons
Alignment: LG
Disciple Alignments: LG, NG, LN
Lair Locations: Islands, Plateaus, Deep Gorges
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Fire

"Gold dragons are dedicated foes of evil and foul play." – Draconomicon, pg. 46

These dragons are righteous warriors who often go on crusades against evil. They are excellent listeners, wise and caring in all of their dealings, and tend to take on shapes of smaller, innocent creatures so that they can view the world and its people in secrecy. They also follow a strict hierarchy with a single elected ruler who oversees all gold dragons in the world. Gold dragons smell of saffron and incense.

Silver Dragons
Alignment: LG
Disciple Alignments: LG, NG, LN
Lair Locations: Mountains, Clouds
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Ice

"Silver dragons enjoy the company of humanoids and often take the form of kindly old men or fair damsels." – Draconomicon, pg. 53

These dragons detest with a passion any form of injustice or cruelty, though generally don't get involved with uprooting the source until their aid is required. They prefer to protect the innocent in a given region, healing them when necessary. Additionally, they like to mingle with humanoids in an assumed form and usually give short-lived races more stock than any of the other dragons. They believe that time shouldn't be wasted simply because one may have a lot of it to spare, and constantly strive to accomplish great deeds as a result. Silver dragons smell of rain.

Chromatic Dragons

Black Dragons
Alignment: CE
Disciple Alignments: CE, NE, CN
Lair Locations: Swamps, Jungles, Bogs
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Acid

"Black dragons are among the most evil-tempered true dragons." – Draconomicon, pg. 37

These dragons are known for their ferocity and tendency to simply attack and kill anything that crosses their paths. They are aggressive and chaotic to the extreme, reveling in the stench of death and decay, especially within their fetid homes. They enjoy coins of various metals and stockpile them to their hearts' content, going so far as to attack travelers or even question them for information regarding large amounts of coin – before killing them anyway. Black dragons smell of rotting vegetation and foul water, with a characteristically acidic undertone.

Blue Dragons
Alignment: LE
Disciple Alignments: LE, NE, LN
Lair Locations: Deserts, Steppes, Badlands
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Electricity

"Blue dragons are vain and territorial." – Draconomicon, pg. 38

These creatures live by a very strict order of individual status within their homes, usually determined by the age of the dragon. While they are the most orderly of the chromatics, blue dragons are diabolical and malign, seeking only to better themselves. They are fiercely territorial and will not hesitate to defend their right to their territory, no matter the identity of the encroacher. Blue dragons smell of ozone and sand, which grows stronger when they are angry and likely to attack.

Green Dragons
Alignment: LE
Disciple Alignments: LE, NE, LN
Lair Locations: Forests
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Acid

"Green dragons are belligerent creatures and masters of intrigue, politics, and backbiting." – Draconomicon, pg. 48

These creatures are aggressive and cruel, though tend to use manipulation and elaborate schemes to achieve what they want, rather than just killing anything in its path, so long as there is something to be gained. They are known for their clever use of verbal evasion, double talk, and straight-out lies when dealing with any creature. They appear honey-tongued and sophisticated, but always have a dark, evil, selfish agenda. Green dragons smell strongly of chlorine.

Red Dragons
Alignment: CE
Disciple Alignments: CE, NE, CN
Lair Locations: Mountains, Hills, Badlands
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Fire

"The most covetous of all the true dragons, red dragons tirelessly seek to increase their treasure hoards." – Draconomicon, pg. 50

These creatures are extremely vain and believe themselves to be the truest example of what it means to be a dragon. They are avaricious, vengeful, and exceptionally ferocious when dealing with any other creature. They do like to gather information, though, and often use "lesser" creatures to bring them news of the outside world. They also tend to eat messengers who bring bad news. Ever prideful, these dragons are the most vile of the true dragons. Red dragons smell of sulfur and pumice.

White Dragons
Alignment: CE
Disciple Alignments: CE, NE, CN
Lair Locations: Arctic, Wintry Mountains, Icy Caves
Breath Weapon/Immunity: Ice

"The smallest, least intelligent, and most animalistic of the true dragons, white dragons prefer frigid climes." – Draconomicon, pg. 55

These creatures have exceptional memories and tend to remember any slight or defeat in their past. This tends to develop vendettas against an offending enemy. They are the most carnal of dragons and often mate just for fun. While they aren't nearly as intelligent as the other dragons, they aren't stupid. They can prove quite cunning when the hunter's instinct takes over or when defending their lairs. White dragons are the only of the true dragons to lack a distinctive scent.

Planar Dragon

Shadow Dragons
Alignment: CE
Disciple Alignments: CE, NE, CN
Lair Locations: Underground
Amia Breath Weapon/Immunity: Negative

"Shadow dragons are sly and devious creatures with ties to the Plane of Shadow. – Draconomicon, pg. 191

These dragons have dark, translucent scales which allow them to blend into the shadows, offering the creature perfect cover for an ambush. They are aggressive and entirely evil, making use of their shadowy techniques to gain the upper hand in any fight.

Roleplaying a Dragon Disciple

"How Much Blood Do I Have"

Dragon disciples are just that – disciples of a dragon bloodline, given to them by a usually distant ancestor. On Amia, it is accepted that without a Request to state otherwise, any amount of dragon heritage that is less than that of a half-dragon does not give the character any physical or mental advantages or characteristics which they may have had from birth. "Quarter-dragons" are thus possible, but they must become dragon disciples in order to access that blood. They are treated just like any other creature with even the smallest fraction of heritage, and are not born with claws, fangs, or any other physical hint to their heritage. As such, it is generally viewed as a gimmick.

Strict Adherence to Alignment: No Exceptions

When awakening dragon blood, it is important to state that the dragon disciple must pursue the norm for the given dragon bloodline. If, by some reasoning, one were to have a dragon ancestor who was "different" than the others of its type, this will not affect the disciple. A dragon disciple awakens blood that is magical in its very nature, and will take on traits and characteristics inherent to the bloodline, not to any one specific dragon. As stated above, a one-step rule is accepted on Amia.

You Don't Always Stay the Same Person

The path of the dragon disciple is an arduous, scholarly one. The disciple must learn as much as possible about their dragon ancestor in order to become a disciple or to advance in levels. It is a path of devotion and acceptance of what was and what shall be within them. The disciple will undergo powerful physical, mental, and perhaps spiritual transformations which can often be painful or life-changing. The choice to become a disciple often changes the character, for better or for worse. They develop the strengths, weaknesses, advantages, and faults inherent to their dragon ancestors, and must be able to accept that in order to awaken their blood.

The Blood Feud

In addition to the above, it should be made clear that the will of the dragon deities, Bahamut and Tiamat, is linked directly to the blood of all dragons. The blood feud is strongest between the original ten chromatics and metallics and it exists as well in their progeny. Dragon disciples will feel the same pull of hatred toward their counterparts. Whether they are direct followers of Bahamut or Tiamat or not, the blood feud is fueled by blood and disciples are pulled into it as naturally as if they had entered it by their own initiative. While dragon disciples of the ten metallic and chromatic dragons can serve any deity within their same moral compass, through the very existence of the dragon blood within them they pay homage to the two most powerful of the dragon gods. Metallic dragon disciples will feel a natural hatred for chromatic dragon disciples, and vice versa.

Advancing in Dragon Disciple Levels

Performing Rituals, Meditation, Etc.

The further along the path of the dragon disciple that a character goes, the stronger the blood within them becomes. In order to advance in dragon disciple levels, the character must seek to reach some kind of goal that is related to their bloodline. On Amia, the common method for advancing in levels is through rituals designed to allow the character to explore, learn, and experiment with various aspects of their dragon ancestry. Meditation and self-reflection on what the disciple has learned is also another way the disciple can advance.

Physical and Mental Traits

With each level, the disciple gains just a little bit more in the way of physical and mental characteristics. The order in which these traits appear can usually be adjusted to suit the benefits granted by the class mechanics. Early levels tend to begin with the appearance of scales, claws, muscles, or other physical traits alongside the AC and Strength bonuses. In later levels, the disciple's intense training reflects on them with the addition of Intelligence and Charisma bonuses. Additionally, the physical traits become more prominent, especially when the wings begin to grow.

These traits do not come about overnight, but rather slowly grow in once the disciple has reached a certain measure of understanding, acceptance, and respect for their dragon heritage. Each level, symbolized by rituals, meditation, or other means, mark the onset of these traits and are directly linked to the levels.

Half-Dragon Template, Not Half-Dragon by Blood

When a dragon disciple reaches level ten in the class, the character takes on the half-dragon template, but does not actually become a half-dragon. They may look like a half-dragon and may be as strong as a half-dragon, but they are still only a dragon disciple of whatever fraction of heritage that they were before. The distinction is important, and is often cause for argument between dragon races.

Lastly, each path taken by a dragon disciple is different. While all disciples become more and more like their ancestors, the degree of purity and strength of their dragon blood remains wholly dependent on the disciple's actions and level of devotion to the bloodline. Some may grow stronger or take on more traits than others. Every path is unique, and may be explored to its fullest potential. Enjoy experimenting, as there are countless ways the path of the dragon disciple may proceed.

Off to a good start! Are there more entries coming on other Dragons? If not, might I suggest some base info be added on the FR specific ones (even though playing as a DD of one would still require a request before character creation)?

Oh, certainly! I'll be sure to mark them as "Request Only" as necessary, too. :D

READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should put this in IC form and distribute it through Copper Industries, KM. :P

I think my new solution to seeing horrible DD RP is going to be simply sending them this topic as a link in a Tell.

....mm, yes.

I agree, this is really helpful information! If I had the time to play a Dragon Disciple, I'd use this as a sidekick guide.

Ah, sorry. I don't read the library forums enough obviously! I'll use that link instead... maybe. Sometimes I think these people need a kick in the OOC head first before they approach anything ICly. Good work! I love it. :) Nice to know Dusty and Stormak have unofficially stamped it too.

One thing that I couldn't find and should be at the top of the topic is exactly how difficult it is to rebuild out of DD.

I can update that, though I think my personal opinion that it should be impossible to do needs to be supported or denied first. :D

I honestly don't see how it could be possible to rebuild out of it once the character has reached that level of devotion and acceptance of the dragon bloodline within. As an example, taking my dragon disciple to level 20 means, as far as I'm concerned, that no matter where her RP takes her any rebuild she has is going to have those 20 levels of DD.

Are there even any exceptions where it would be suitable to lose the levels?

The others are correct! It is almost word-for-word from the Draconomicon and Monster Manual 3 (you can look yourself, if you like!). Proper bias against evil dragons is in the IC version of this made by Zelly. :D

Evil dragons are exactly that: evil. They're cunning, intelligent, cruel, and malicious. Their disciples are, too.

I have updated the post a bit with some further formatting to find specific information. I've also added information under the headings "Removing Dragon Disciple Levels" and "The Blood Feud". I'm working on entries for additional dragon types.

Keep up the good work!

Don't forget to mention the present Amian 1 step rule on DD alignments. The Draconic blood holds a powerful sway, but they are still partly (insert base race) and their past decisions can draw them ever so slightly away from some of the moral ideals and social inclinations of their ancestor.

May want to touch up this part. It reads as though Metallics and Chromatics are the only true dragons all together.

Well, the alignment thing is covered in the individual dragon write-ups. I did mention the one-step rule! I'll touch both of the sections up a bit. I usually assumed "True Dragon" referred to the basic ten metallic and chromatic dragons, but then I do most of my reading out of Draconomicon, which doesn't account for the others that are FR specific.

Thanks, Dusty!

It's bias built into the source book. Tends to happen when something is defined as 'evil, and bad'.

Dwagin illustrated the reverse perfectly.

Not quite, if it was perfect I would have removed the quotations from around lesser, and removed the allusion that there were other 'true' dragons than reds.

Ok your not as good as I thought you were. Point of this post?

The point of the post was to correct something originally intended to be tongue in cheek and making it more accurate as it became cited as an example. I like examples to be most correct, particularly when they are citing my words.

I happen to be quite the fan of dragons and want to make certain the information about them is accurately absorbed.

Im assume by source this came from ze dragonomicon? im trying to remember the eye colours and such for metallics in specific at the moment. would prefer not to have two sources if it is not the aformentioned book.

Well, since we're supposed to ask questions here...

Rini, my Brass DD, is fairly young. As such, I've been RPing her as growing the brown scales of an immature Brass, rather than brass-coloured ones. Is this the correct approach, and at what point should her scales begin to change from brown to brass? I'd look up the Draconomicon for relevant dragon age range for this, but I've lost my copy. -_-

Personally, I would think the scales would be the adult dragon color, regardless of the character's age. An easy way to support this would be that on Amia (unless we have an approved request, of course) we have to play adult characters - which translates well to using adult dragons.

Besides! Even if we did do it the way you're suggesting, brass dragons have mottled brown scales only at birth and in the first few years of their lives. By the time they're a Juvenile, their scales are definitely recognizable. So unless your character is ten years-old, I can't imagine brown would be the right color. :)

I agree with Jes, I think it would just be standard adult coloring.

Read through again since I've just started my first DD, was mostly looking for information on the rituals of which this gives the closest thing to guidelines and gives me ideas for RP :D

Also would like to see this in the Lore section :) It's very helpful for anyone planning to make a DD and looking for source info on them

No. That is for DM lore only.

Are you thinking of looking at some of the other Faerunian dragons, perhaps a little later on? I undertand there was at least a Fang dragon disciple, and song dragons, though rare are one of my favorites. :) Hoever.. perhaps a list of some may be helpful as well. It took me forever to find out there were Rattelyr Dragons!

I believe steel dragons, brown dragons, mercury dragons and yellow dragons are the typical Faerûnian dragon species. And dracohydras, if they count. At least they're the ones in the older sources. Since then I think pretty much everything imaginable has been added under the dragon umbrella.

I can work on adding the Faerunian dragons from Dragons of Faerun and whatever other FR sourcebook might list some different dragons, but I won't list every single other dragon available. That would be a list that's never complete. :D

Is it possible to have a Faerie Dragon Disciple or is it a no-no because of the breath weapons (prismatic breath). I am interested in perhaps creating one in the future as a sorcerer who specializes in enchantment and this would be a perfect addition.

The problem is I don't know if it is possible for a Faerie Dragon to have humanoid offspring. I haven't been able to find anything about half-Faerie Dragons or anything that indicates it is possible.

I don't believe that Faerie Dragons take humanoid form in order to be able to have a child with a humanoid race. That may put a wrench in the idea of a Faerie Dragon Disciple.

There's lots of dragon types that aren't explicitly specified as being able to take humanoid form, but that's never been an obstacle before. Even if you dragon ancestor never took humanoid form, there's just buckets and buckets of humanoids that can, one way or another, take draconic form. Maybe your sorcerer got a tweak to his ancestral bloodline that way.

Just remember that if it's not one of the standard colours (Red/White/Blue/Black/Green/Shadow or Gold/Silver/Copper/Brass/Bronze) you need an approved request BEFORE you make the char. Otherwise, like my erstwhile whitekin who is the worst whitekin ever, you will end up with someone who doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Yeah I figured it was a request situation, but didn't want to request something that wasn't at all possible. Thanks for the idea Lizzie it would allow me to maybe create a backstory.

It's true that commonly it's being able to tell an excellent story and helping the DMs believe in your character rather than simply 'no'. I'd say go for it and I, for one, look forward to reading it.

Do metallic wyrmlings gain both breath weapons, and if not when do they?

According to the Draconomicon, they do indeed have their alternate breath weapons at the wyrmling stage.
