Question 1: "Perfect self and the Color of Ki"
- Once a monk achieves perfection in training, he gets immunity to mind-effecting spells and those glowing eyes. We all know the various alignments involved with each color- but my question is this: Why is there a color for such an alignment? How is the color of ki (Or his aura, or whatever it really -is-) determined? Are there ever examples of monks who's perfect self glows with a different color? Much like Dragon Disciples choosing the color of their specific dragon type, would a monk's ki be that different?

"Bioware". Not much we can do here, sorry. Your explanation ICly is probably as good as mine, but it is IC.

Quote:
Question 2: "What happens when a Spell is Resisted?"
- I'm talking physically. Obviously, there's things left up to the creativity of the roleplayer. But, for example- does the spell just fizzle? Hit him, but not do anything? Does the monk deflect the beam into the ground? Or can he say, catch a magic missile and watch it fizzle in his hands? Where are the limits to our creativity here?

The spell casts, but fails to affect you. How this failure manifests is up to you, be it deflection, absorption, a caught fizzle, etc.

Are the rare elven monks excluded from worshiping any of the Seldarine due to the monk's lawful alignment and that there are no lawful aligned worshipers in among the Seldarine, or is there some loophole for elven monks?

Monks aren't a divine class and don't need to be within any deity's clerical alignment range. They're free to worship as they please, so long as they're not multiclassed as a divine class.

So I've been wondering:

In regards to food, is Toril relatively comparable to Earth? Like are most of the common food and drink found in the Forgotten Realms as well?

I don't want to start talking about raspberries IC and have people lock my char in the nuthouse :D

I would say your best bet is to look at foods and dishes available during the Renaissance and go from there. Feel free to toss a realms twist on things as well. IE: Rothe Stroganoff, etc.

Bread, Meat, Cheese. Those were the three main staples from royals on down to commoner, far more so for commoners for obvious reasons. Most everyone made and subsequently packed one of three things on travels. Bread. Meat. Or Cheese in any sort of mix you like. With quality rising as did your station in life etc. From there anythign else was mostly reserved to nobility and fancy occasions. Oh and if you were irish the occasional potato ive been told, usually boiled into a paste like consistancy as chewing when you are drunk is far to hard.

Hahaha I see what you did there.
All makes sense, was thinking more on the lines of the actual things we have (ie raspberries, other fruits/vegetables, etc). Obviously there are similar, identical, and totally new meats and such (ie deer, rothe, etc).

Now I need me some potatoes.....

Yups, what Feo said. Mind that also to my knowledge, medieval "ale" was etremely watered down and you drank the good stuff to actually get drunk.

Cordor and Kohlingen are pretty wealthy cities so it wouldn't be ut of the ordinary to see milk, eggs, veggies, fruits, various kinds of meats as fairly common things, but in places like the Dale, Wharftown, Uhm, Guldorand, Wiltun, "beer, cheese, meat, bread" is your food... pyramid.

Another hint: Head on in to your local tavern to learn more about the foods that are offered.

The previous responses are mostly correct. As far as food preparation was concerned, everything was done with an eye towards food preservation. Beer was essentially a way to preserve grain (and make water potable, due to the alcohol killing bacteria. Drinking regular water was risking cholera/dysentery). Cheese was how you preserved milk, and meat was often heavily salted or smoked. Refrigeration was unheard of, of course. Fruit, which was pretty rare and expensive, was almost always preserved as jam (preserves), if not eaten almost immediately.

Yep. Earth's natural foods are what's mostly common and available on Toril. I agree with the idea that foods are mostly old school earth, but I think some modernization is fine too. It's a magical world, after all.

I would also say that fruits and veggies aren't as rare in Bendir Dale. Bendir Dale's farms and orchards provide for veggies and fruits during certain times of the year, I'd say. Generally speaking though, most civilized folk with no knowledge of the wilds -- or the coin to buy it -- would rarely find themselves with veggies or fruits to eat.

On a related note: Does magic's existence have any effect on food storage/preparation/preservation/etc or is it self contained to mechanical/combat effects?

It might have a small effect in wealthier portions of the world that can use it more commonly. I'm sure the desert regions have ways to preserve things that need to be cooler.

I've heard of a couple things related to this. One was a portal that led to an ice cave for cold storage. Another was a portal in a cabinet that led to an ever-bearing pomegranite tree. But those are fairly extreme examples, given both were said to be features of Blackstaff Tower mentioned in various FR novels. Still, I'd not be surprised if a town might not be able to hire a wizard to enchant a communal cold-storage shed, or enchant a well so that only pure water could be drawn from it. It makes sense that magic would be developed for more practical applications than fighting and adventuring.

What is the exact effects of Amia's default GS?
I mean, I see on the sidebar you get 100% spell failure, CL*5 Temporary Hit Points and 90% Movement Speed Increase... but that seems horribly inferior to the point of GS. Is there something else that I'm missing? Like do you still get the Sanctuary effect with all that?

Part of the reason I'm confused is the BoT page states GS changes to the NWN default (that's what it seems like to me, at least). I figured the GS would make it something different, but I don't know.

Sooo what's up with this spell in the default Amia version and the BoT version?

It gives you Greater Sanctuary in addition to those effects, yes.

The BoT page was for pre-nerf GS and I don't believe it does anything now.

Also, shouldn't this be in the build topic? :P

what's a good way to explain "zen archery" ICly... I had some RP in Winya yesterday involving archery and I got kind of stuck explaining how zen archery works... i tried to say instead of reaction and stance my character used patience and instincts instead... plausible?

I'd say it is fair.

I can't speak for the rest of te team on this, but the way I have handled Zen Archery fluff wise (in PnP) is that instead of relying upon their own physical prowess (or lack there of), the character instead relies upon the strengths of the weapon they are using and their intuition/knowledge of tactics to place the projectile where they believe it will do the greatest harm or cause the greatest hinderence to their target.

Personally, I think of someone using Zen Archery being like someone to whom ranged weapons are an extension of their will, not necessarily a reliance on more standard physical prowess. It's kind of monk-like in a sense, but I figure the same principles would apply. How mastery of the self means mastery of the ranged weapon in question,... etc

That's just my take though... not really based on anything other than my instinct.

You must loose your arrow with the wind, not against it.
And other fake-zen-type sayings.

I also interpret wisdom as a form of enhanced instinct at times, so I usually go for that on my zen archers.

I think Falling Spider has it about right. I RP my druid's Zen Archery as a very deep understanding of the environmental effects on an arrow's trajectory. Humidity, Barometric pressure, wind strength and direction, gravity, the properties of the arrow's wood. Basically all the things a sniper has to account for, but through intuition rather than a notebook and rangefinder, so that mental skill can be used even if you're fairly clumsy.

So I rolled up a cleric of Hanali a while ago and took charm domain... and it has me wondering about domination... would there be issues with me *is in falling* by using the spell to say dominate a monster to help us? I am figuring since the spell is granted by the charm domain hanali wouldn't have a problem with it but I just wanted to make sure... also would say an orc or giant be alright... but not say a devil or demon?

Almost any thing has the potential to get a cleric fallen. It's all a matter of how you make use of whatever the thing is. A cleric of Chauntea who has some almonds, gifts from her god, is fine to feed them to the needy. She's not fine to feed it to an honest and needy person who she knows is deathly allergic to almonds though.

You have the domination spell because Hanali is okay with it's use. Knowing you, I think you know well enough what constitutes it's improper use. It's all about intent, really. If you dominate a demon to go hunting for loot, that's pretty low for a priest of Hanali. If you dominate a demon to stop it from attacking you, and perhaps to use it against the person who summoned it in order to save your life, that's a lot more reasonable.

Point is, it would be impossible to detail every way you can and can not fall when using that spell.

Dominating a demon or devil to go after other evil things is alright for a cleric of Hanali. As would be using it to get information from someone to stop evil. But using it gratuitously or wantonly would likely result in a fall. By gratuitously/wantonly, I'd mean like dominating an innocent person as a practical joke, or to get revenge for some minor slight. Forcefully wrenching control of someone's body from their own will isn't something that should be done lightly, especially when the means to do so is a divine gift from a goodly chaotic goddess.

I completely agree... the enchantment school is a very dangerous thing for any good cleric to be playing around with... and my cleric will be an epic enchanter. I tried to wrap my head around the idea of the morality of enchantment quite a bit as I play her... I came up with a few times where using it on others and not monsters might be acceptable but still not to be taken lightly...

No... rangers on amia don't need to be a follower of a nature deity to get spells... so they can wear fullplate without a problem... you just have to worship a god... doesn't matter who.

Druids on the other hand can't wear metal... unless they follow Mielikki and even they can only wear what a stock ranger can wear... not fullplate *heavy armor*

No. Bladesingers are exclusively elven, and stand as a paragon of Tel'Quessir society. Drow don't qualify for this.

The drow version are a fair bit different. I believe they're called Deathsingers.

Complete Elven and Races of Faerun imply that Drow can technically be Bladesingers.

That's because Drow ARE Tel'Quessir even if they are cursed, ergo their original name of Ssri'Tel'Quessir.
Unless you are making the claim that all of their own knowledge of bladesinging was lost in their fall and that somehow despite their rather extreme penchants for both magic and war they have not recreated the methods.

Also Deathsinger is just the name that some drow bards go by as their music and magic involved in it is usually of a darker nature.

Regardless you can have a bladesinger like drow character even if it isn't one in the strictest sense, we've had warrior/wizard drow before.
