I don't have a copy anymore, but I'm guessing that it would be in the Book of Exalted Deeds.

Pretty sure it's not a real class, just a homebrew class named after a popular Paladin sword.

On Amia, does the Book of Transmutation work if you cast from scrolls or wands?
Also, can a mage use the BoT to, say, alter Continual Flame to be AoE and then cast it on a wand or scroll, so that it is then AoE when used?

It doesn't work on wand or scrolls but works on potions that's manmade, I think... D: I might be wrong...
I know my friend's Flame Weapon potion can change elements. Or so I was told, anyway... xD;;;

I know my friend's Flame Weapon potion can change elements. Or so I was told, anyway... xD;;; If I have my BoT set for Flame Weapon to be electric damage, using a scroll or wand puts fire damage on my weapon but the potion puts electric. That's using the potions, not crafting the potions. I don't think BoT is taken into consideration for crafting the potion. Though I could be wrong. Since I usually set my damage to electrical as a matter of course and will probably continue to do so until I get an electrical weapon. >.>

Its because using a potion due to some strange bioware idiosyncracy actually counts as casting a spell.
Which means even though it lasts for seven minutes or whatever it has a Caster Level that equals your character level or highest Caster level. Its why whenever I see Barbs/Weapon Masters and Fighter types with no intuitive Caster level take 1 Bard I cringe a little.

I have a question about how technologically advanced Amia is! Well, particularly about one item: A Phonograph.
I know we have watches and printing presses and pretty neat things like that, so would a phonograph be a stretch?
Edit: Naturally, this includes the question of vinyl records, or equivalent; such as temporary wax records.

I think there's a PLC that's basicly a gnomish music box. Given that, I don't think a *very* early, magi-techish phonograph would be too far-fetched. As for records, the early RL phonographs used drums coated in wax to to hold recorded music, unless I'm mistaken. Let a few more DMs chime in though before running with anything like this though. I'll admit to to having something of a steampunk bias going

Ditch the magic, seems fine on an actual level (teh wax records bit). I admit I'm no expert on phonographs.
When in doubt: Veer towards magitech, not steampunk.

Sure thing, sure thing! A documentary I watched a while back mentioned wax and rubber records, but they were problematic because they lose their shape after so often. Those were some of the earliest "records" when the Phonograph was first created, iirc. Thanks Gers. And Tormak too.

Curious on scarring and DnD. Can old scarring be healed via clerical spells? What about something like a brand (ie someone is branded in slavery and then seeks to have it removed once they are freed?). Curious as a backstory sort of thing as well.
Is there a sort of stance on this? Honestly I would think with that a cleric dedicating a healing spell to this sort of thing would work to fix the scarring damage, right?

I'm not sure there is any stance on it. Much of healing RP is subjective, and handled between those involved. As a rule of thumb, the passing of time has an impact. A brand recently inflicted might be able to be healed by magic, if it has not already healed naturally over time. A brand inflicted years ago has already 'healed,' and a healing spell applied would likely have nothing to 'fix.'
Just my two cents.

Scar tissue is actually dead, I'm pretty sure. If some of it is living, it's damaged but it has technically healed. But scars are cool for being permanent. But, I've always argued they can't ever be entirely removed. Only lessened through removing dead tissue surgically and using little healing spells to stimulate healthy skin to regrow.

Cut it away, cast regen. That is how I've treated it in PnP games. Not sure there is an Amian Standard though beyond player's choice.

I personally think perception plays a big part in it. People have a mental image of their body and somehow healing magic taps into that. So recent wounds do not impact that image and causes the magic to restore the body to the new image.
Old wounds however, people get accustomed to and they adapt their mental body image to this loss or scaring. As a result the healing magic no longers heals them.
This is just a personal way of looking at this however.

Hadn't thought about the issue, but this sounds really good. We can take for granted that immediate healing magic doesn't leave scars, but I reckon the scar tissue of already healed wounds wouldn't disappear with a regular healing spell either. This method is both logical and fun, adding some flavor and meat on the technicalities. I doubt you'll find a conclusive canon answer.

I'm sort of guilty of having healing magic work different ways on different characters. For some of my guys to whom looking how they look is important, it doesn't leave a scar, or there are ways to remove scars. For my barb, though, damage taken is a scar, whether it's healed, rested, or otherwise restored.

I also agree with the notion I have read elsewhere that certain injuries leave scars of some sort no matter what when the injury is meaningful or especially traumatic.

What Naivatkal said is actually kind of thought provoking. A 'mind affects how it turns out' sort of thing. That's particularly interesting- I'll keep that in mind when RPing healing someone from now on. Thank you all for this! This is actually really interesting.

Yeah it was something about the injured person's mental image of themselves affecting how healing magic heals them. It makes sense in that aspect when you take into account really traumatic injuries 'imprinting' themselves (or whatever) into someone's mental image and thereby some sort of scar remaining behind.
I would assume someone of sufficient mental willpower would be able to even 'restore' their previously unscarred self with healing magic, so long as it hasn't been a long time and such.

I remember there was some discussion about it before. Idea was that everything, has a certain pattern that defines it on metaphysical level. If person gets cut, pattern is temporarily damaged, and healing magic, if applied relatively fast, will restore the pattern (aka close the wound). However, if cut heals through normal means over time (stitching, bandaging, resting) and leaves a scar, it eventually becomes part of the pattern (aka pattern slowly accepts change as part of it). In that case, standard healing spells shouldn't work, since, technically, wound has already healed. Whatever image person has about him/herself really shouldn't matter much IMHO, especially if someone else casts healing spell, and DnD spells are usually well defined how they work, so there is little leeway there. However, I can bet some sharessan/sunite clerics could easily have developed prayers (spells) to deal specifically with such cases (removing scars or something similar). Probably even small order of first aesthetic surgeons who go around and help people improve their looks if they prove themselves worthy of such gift etc... In essence, if you don't want permanent scars, use healing pots/spells. If you want manly scars, use heal kits

Those were some of the earliest "records" when the Phonograph was first created, iirc. Thanks Gers. I remember having this discussion a few years back. I dunno if it's still on the forum though. Like I remember saying back then, I still feel that the more appropriate format of playback music would actually be the piano roll, not the phonograph. The documentary you watched is correct, but it can lead people to believe some falsehoods. While it's true that wax and metal records were among the first forms of recording, they weren't among the first forms of playback. Playback came first and playback was also the first way people listened to music in the home as an affordable form of entertainment. Back in the late 1800's and the early 1900's, people would buy piano rolls to listen to their favorite music/musicians at home, like they would later buy a vinyl record, 8-track, cassette tape and CD. The limitation was that it only played back piano, but it was easily the most affordable way to listen to music at the time still. Piano rolls helped make pop stars out of Rag-time players of the time, much like records would do for Jazz and Blues musicians later. It was the most popular way major music stars of the time had their music sold for profit, apart from actual music sheets of course. Piano rolls used a type of piano called "player piano." You would pop the roll in it and it would play back the music to the exact time the original performer played it. The phonograph didn't truly become an affordable way to sell recorded music until roughly 1930. That's when actual recordings made their way to home all across the world, and not just the homes of the rich -- since they were the only people who could afford early phonograph players and, what they called, cans -- or the middle/upper-middle class -- who could afford to buy piano rolls which were by all right still expensive too. Of course, if you want to go back to affordable playback/recordings before both of those formats, you look to the music box. However, the reason for the popularity of the piano roll, besides it being more affordable, is that the sound quality was good, while still capturing the exact timing of the artist in question.

I'd imagine you'd turn into a pregnant version of whatever you've turned into. But the baby would still be a baby whatever you where originally.
For the purposes of spells, I believe mother and child are considered one until birth. If you're asking what happens when you turn into a ladybug while pregnant, well, that's a bit more complicated. I'd still imagine you'd just be a lady bug with a very tiny baby human inside of you at that point.
Carrying out the act of birth while in a shapeshifted form probably results in the baby coming out the normal size, or in the case of smaller forms, being born a smaller size, but magically turning to normal size whenever the spell or shapeshift wore off of the mother.

Well I've been here for a while and I don't think it's ever come up as an issue.
But when you think about it, miscarriage seems very plausible, but not necessarily guaranteed in all situations. Pregnancy is a relatively delicate state for a young humanoid. When a person shapeshifts, their insides stretch, contract, move about, and change form into whatever the insides the creature are supposed to look like. There's the real possibility of a shapechanger injuring or killing their child if they don't have a great knowledge of what they're turning into.
In the worst case, I wouldn't think it would be a miscarriage in the manner most are familiar with it. I think it would be something like the child is subsumed into your being again, and when you unshift, you're just not pregnant any more. So... Plan B, fantasy style.

Haha, nasty. The Book of Erotic Fantasy puts it as a common cultural taboo to have intercourse while shapeshifted. Pregnancy would be weird. Abortion would be easy, though.

I blame the Sharessins. It was totally us.
I mean, them.
Also Xavi.

Everyone knows Elminster is banging Mystra and Szass Tam is Larloch's butt-buddy.
And yes, if anything bumps uglies on the face of Faerun, there's a 86.87 percent change Xavi was involved in some way or another.

Gunz wrote: Helpful music stuff. I should have just asked the music major DM first, it seems. Well, Gunz and I talked about it, and while piano rolls are awesome, I don't think they're what I'm looking for. The music I'm interested in isn't solely piano music, but also wind and percussion music. Phonographs are the option that does what I'm interested in, but the problem is that other technologies were also made around that gateway of innovation. Like photography and film. So! It's a bit more problematic than just a phonograph, if we use the real world as an example for technological progress. What's the word, DM team? Still alright with a phonograph, and then we can just ignore all those other silly innovators?

I'm fine with the phonograph.

The Book of Erotic Fantasy (or the books, if there's new ones) isn't canon, by the way. It wasn't released by WotC, it's compliant with the Open Gaming License and compatible with d20 systems. It's not an actual D&D product.
