How does one use this thing? I found an empty one in a loot drop, and have been adding the random loot drop pages to it.
However, when I right click/cast on self, it only opens a dialog to to change the settings of the particular spells in the book, but it won't let me cast the spells.
Do I A) need some ranks in 'use magic device'; B) need to have levels in sorc or wiz to use it?
Right now I am a level 9 fighter with no magical aptitude whatsoever, yet the book does not highlight red when I mouse over it, and I can still right click/cast on self.

So, what do i do?

The book changes the proprieties of the spells that it has pages for. Let's take Flame Weapon as an example: using the BoT you can chance the damage bonus it gives from Fire (default) to Cold or Electric, provided your PC can cast said spell. So, in short, it's a tool for casters. It doesn't work for scrolls (that I'm aware of) nor does it grant your PC the ability to cast spells.

As to what to do with it:

Sell it to a wizard/sorcerer/bard/cleric/druid lacking the pretty book for money.
Or use it when sleeping in the wild for when you...well...you know.

Nope, doesn't work on scrolls (at least didn't work with Flame Weapon when I tried).

Also, since it will likely be asked, non-casters can use it so they can see what pages are in there and get a full book to sell (or partial, whatevz). At least, that's what I figure.

It doesn't work on scrolls or wands, but unless it's been changed, it does work on potions.

It also works on items and shifter powers. Like, the azer shape can electric up its axe, and items that cast circle against align will be affected by the book change

Ah that's right I forgot about wands.

Actually... I think it does. I swear that my cleric made a Continual Flame wand after using the BoT page and it is AoE. Course, I could be wrong, because in that instance she also used the BoT page and then used that same wand. Unfortunately I'm just home so I can't check! >_<

Or maybe it just works with wands you have made? Dunno.

If it's working from items then it's obviously a bug, and should be reported!

Thank you for letting us know that a player has been willingly abusing a bug, and even who the player was. Just a shame that no one ever bothered reporting it when it's well known that the BoT was only made to work with actually cast spells. Shows how much the community at large tends to care about their exploiting, I suppose.

I can say for one that I never recall ever reading that they could not be used on wands. The last I remember, there were players speculating but no one with authority ever stated one way or another. I know Mosh made a comment when I asked in the Lore thread, but he only referred to the mini-discussion about potions. I do not know of anywhere that it explicitly states the BoT can only be used with spells. Granted, the BoT might say in the decrip, but I haven't read that thing in forever and I can't exactly look right now.

it even says in Rules and Lore "Only casters may benefit from the BoT". The explicit implication is that they are for spells. It has been stated on the forums several times but since I can't search for the exact wording, it is a bit hard to find.

Okay I see then. I've just never found it and I swear I've never seen it on the the R&L section, heh.
I guess technically one could assume that 'Only casters may benefit from the BoT' means that casters should be able to use it from scrolls/wands they created (like I think happened with my cleric that one time), but it sounds like that is clearly a misconception. Obviously the DMs have the last say.

I can test this after I get off work and make sure we know what's happening. Salema has some wands I can try with and I can make some scrolls with her to test, too.

Yep, never knew that was a bug or exploit, I've done it and won't anymore.

Grab book, use pages on book, use book, select spell and functionality, cast spell.

One thing to note about the books, actually, is the way they default. They always return to a server default after each reset, might be after each relog too (not sure ^^), so each time you log back on if you wanna' go fight fire giants you'll need to reapply your Flame Weapon transmutation.

It's just per reset. If I log in at the beginning of the reset and then log out, my BoT will still be changed no matter how long or often I log into the server until it resets again.
