if you go the dev crit route. 20 bard/4 bg/6 fighter or CoT.

I want those tasty Blackguard goodies, but CoT would fit the concept well!

Edit: Also a dev crit build would demand a lot of strength I am not sure how to build around.

Blackguard tasty goodies end at level 3 dear sir! After that, it's taking enough levels to cover your charisma modifier if you have Divine Might/Shield, and finally 16 levels for the summon.

Woe, how painful the 30 level cap can sometimes be, when you have to choose if you want a fun summon, or Lasting Inspiration, and both are equally attractive.

21bard/8blackguard/1ranger or 14bard/16blackguard for a summon which you can still buff quite nicely/

What about all the Amia specific Blackguard goodness? Are other builds, like that Divine Champion Dev critter superior?
I care not for the summon my good man!

Also, 21Bard/8Blackguard/1Ranger, what's the ranger for?

Feat abuse and a spot dump.

I'd actually consider 16 Bard 4 Fighter 10 Blackguard. Regardless of what others say 16 Bard is bard enough to have fun with and compete in most aspects of the server.

Class abilities are generally always related to class level.

"Deeper Darkness
6 Blackguard levels, 13 Wisdom
As per Darkness, but with a duration of Turns/Blackguard level."

"Abyssal Might
7 Blackguard levels, 14 Wisdom
The caster summons evil energy from the Abyss and is imbued with its might. The caster gains a +2 enhancement bonus to Strength, Constitution, and Dexterity for Turns/Level."

That's where the confusion stems from

I can't think of a single situation where it's character level.

With 18 bard levels, I would suggest taking curse song. It is the song you need not keep up for long. In PVE your opponents will likely fall before the curse ends.

I'm curious about the 20 bard/4 bg/6CoT with Devastating Critical,
How would this work?

18 bard is bad because you should be doing 20 bard for lasting inspiration, btw.

There are only two good amia specific feats/spells imo that BG gets, one is the aura, the other is holy sword. I suppose the rest do come in handy however if you don't have access to spellcasting or UMD, but you're taking bard so... As for the Unholy Sword, i personally never stretch my WIS to meet the requirements for this, unless my character has other uses for that WIS.

Why does it always have to be abuse, cheese, dumps and hacks with those things... It's how the game works.
Why some people are so eager to call others builds munchkins and whatnot as soon as they sense it can be classified as some sort of unfair advantage? I bet at least 80% of people are playing munchkins or are abusing skilldumps, but in reality that mostly has impact on how the character is played and perceived from my experience, even when it's just a justification - who are you to judge?

I ask, how is it somehow morally improper to use these means to create interesting, solid character builds that can compete with the module and other players - as opposed by going the easy way and picking monk-dragons, wm-dev critters and the like (meaning those common builds that break the balance)?

I play a rogue/sd/blackguard, barbarian/assassin/fighter, bard/barb/aa, ftr/bg/wm and finally a bard/bg/pm and trust me - none of those well built, optimized, very interesting and uncommon builds stand a chance against a monk-dragon or a melee wm-rdd-barbarian-whatever munchkin.

And i'm the bad apple...

Yus!
Hell, in fact any number of Bard levels in the mix is a win-win, from 1 to 30.

TormakSaber wrote:

18 is indeed an odd place to stop progressing as a Bard, should be 16 tops to leave room for other classes or go 20+.

Why is skilldumping considered so bad?

instead of taking let's say 'Spot' from level 1 to 30 on my rogue, I take all 33 points once i reach 30.
Suddenly i am abusing something.

*Rant*

i myself have made plenty of bard something builds and man go 20 bard or 16. just make sure the 20th level is on a general feat level past 20. ie.. 24,27, or 30. curse song is almost a must going 20 bard because of the -stats that help you pvp or pve. btw 20bard +almost anything is going to be good. devastating critical is nice not imperative but very nice. so if i was doing either of those builds 20bard/8bg/2fighter or 20bard/6bg/4fighter for epic weapon specialization. BG has devcrit in it's feat list so you can get plus 6 to save and divine might and shield. with 6 rounds of duration or 8 to saves divine might shield with 8 rounds of duration.

I said feat abuse which taking one ranger on anything is. Its purely for stacking the frontloading that a Ranger recieves at level 1. I call it as I see it and in this instance 1 Ranger is used for Epic Weapon Focus and Spot dumping and not much else.

Skill dumping I don't care about, I skill dump on every character. That said my characters all have a logical reason and planned out RP for their skills and classes. As a DM if I see a 29 Wizard 1 Ranger I expect that 1 Ranger level to be RP'ed or I don't give DC's.

:D Well i was going to say that i won't defend skilldumping, but something came to my mind.
Sure, in essence a character that skilldumps from zero to hero on the last level could probably be only explained as spontaneous mutation or achieving enlightenment. The way it should be done properly in case of a skilldump would be at least setting the groundwork for this with a sufficient amount of RP beforehand.

Of course not many people really do that, they just pretend the skill in question is something natural to them and that they were developing it all along.

But you know what? Everybody skilldumps. Yes, you aswell. You will definitely have leftover skillpoints at some point during character progression, which will be used at a later time and the scale of skilldumping in my opinion is irrelevant.
So unless you have a rare purist approach of spending all leftover skill points on each level and/or not multiclassing at all - you're guilty.

So i ask another question, why are common practices, that are part of and allowed by the system deserving criticism and ridicule?

Please note that i address this question to all the people actively participating in this topic who criticize these practices, and i shall boldly say that most if not all of you are by default guilty of encouraging skill-dumping (sometimes even munchkin-mongering) whenever you aid in creation of a triple-class build here instead of promoting lvl 30 single class builds (yuck).

As for this matter, i agree with Chris and i myself do RP what i've built my character out of.

However this is an even trickier case.
How do you determine if a wiz29/ranger1 is RP'ed properly, considering that character spent the majority of his development on arcane arts, and roughly 3% on being a ranger?

Is that archmage supposed to hide [Trackless Step, Stealth skills] in the bushes with a tamed Badger [Animal Empathy], and protect his homeland [Ranger "RP" in general] from Goblins [Favored Enemy] with his trusty blades [Dual Wield]?

Or is just being an archmage particularly not fond of a certain race sufficient?

This is of course an exaggeration. What i'm trying to say is that treating classes like they define the character with full impact is wrong. They are nothing more than building blocks for our characters, and whether you take 1 level of ranger or 9, only you determine how will it affect your character - and of course whichever perks you make use of should be RP'ed accordingly.

And:

My message to you all is this: stop criticizing, saying that we abuse this or munchkin that.

I'll cut it short, i'm sick of it as it serves no real purpose in this thread. People come here with build questions, how they RP them is on them and them alone and they don't deserve to be ridiculed here based on builds.

Why would I stop saying ranger 1 is feat abuse? As I said I call it what it is, even when I do it myself.

And yes I'd expect 1 Ranger level inside a Wizard build to represent something with regards to Ranger.

I am playing an Il'haress of the fourth house down in Edonil. I am currently 9 cleric, 2 fighter. My intention was to go with 17 cleric, 4 Fighter, 5 KC and 2 rogue or bard. I was not aware the rule was no more then 3 classes. Now that I know I need help with my build. I must have the 17 levels of Cleric, and I want the 5 levels of KC for RP purposes mainly. So now, suggestions on the rest? As I am low level I am not above doing a self rebuild right now in order to "fix" things. Thoughts?

I would suggest 22 Cleric, 5 KC, 1 Bard as follows:

1) Cleric, Power Attack
2) Cleric
3) Cleric, Divine Might
4) Cleric
5) Cleric
6) Cleric, Divine Shield
7) Cleric
8) Cleric
9) Cleric, Extend Spell
10) Cleric
11) Cleric
12) Cleric, Toughness
13) Cleric
14) Cleric
15) Cleric, Skill Focus Discipline
16) Knight Commander
17) Knight Commander
18) Knight Commander, Improved Critical
19) Knight Commander
20) Cleric
21) Cleric, Blind Fight
22) Knight Commander
23) Cleric
24) Cleric, Armor Skin
25) Cleric
26) Cleric
27) Cleric, Epic Mummy Dust
28) Bard

Problems: Lots of cross class skills for KC prerequisites eat your meager clerical skillpoints, ineffectual evo-blaster, lacks greater ruin

Strengths: Strong melee capabilities, full APR, reasonable durability with divine shield, as it won't be packing oodles of offensive spells, it'll be full of mass heals, which will make it superb character while playing with groups of PCs, augmented by KC, it should keep just about any party alive

You should focus keeping wisdom snug at a mere 20 to meet the requirement for EMD, and otherwise investing your abilities into charisma, and strength, in order to up the lethality of your character, which is put at a disadvantage with an underdeveloped casting ability. (Though not non-existent!)

Screw the Improved Critical pre-epic, take Blindfight instead, replace the free epic feat with something better like Epic Skill Focus, an epic spell, an ability point, or Epic Prowess. Otherwise it seems fine.

I still follow the rule of the ancient when it comes to strange class combinations: as long as your RP justifies the build, there is no problem. If it doesn't or is way too thick, it is the DMs' problem. Whether it should be governed here or not, I dunno, but it is for the good of the player if it is.

Bard/DC/BG would go like:

Bard12/DC4/BG4 pre-epic, Bard20/DC6/BG4 at 30.

Feats: PA, Cleave, Great Cleave, Divine Might, Extend, Maximise, Curse song, Blindfight, Weapon focus, Improved critical

Epic feats: Lasting Winspiration, Overwhelming, Devastating, Armour Skin, EWF

There's a challange for you Uce... an Assassin/Cleric build that doesn't suck and has enough Assassin levels to use all the amia specific tricks.

Cleric15/Assassin14/Ranger1? I like the setting here, because Cleric15 means you're hopelessly gimmicky and your sole purpose is to be a massive burst of damage and flee, which is kind of the thing about assassins.

I'm not Uce, but since he's been on a rather lengthy hiatus, I took the liberty of answering you.

*GASPS* You are forgetting how useful Abyssal might is! It's what I like to think of as three free Ioun stones in one, with a fancy visual.

Your sig just begged to be responded to, hence the calling you Uce.

Would Assassin 14 get all the cool assassin stuff that Amia now has? Thats a big part of making an assassin for me. Also, I'm assuming you're recommending a dex base character? That leaves me wondering what feats to use? I kind of like the idea of Epic Skill focusing on sneak feats... but I'm not really sure... how to keep the BAB up?

Quick question: Great Smite Good- Worth it or not? Is the damage determined by the total class level, or just the Blackguard level? If it's just the blackguard level, I can't imagine the damage being very high, and thus- the great smite good not actually that worth it.

The actual Blackguard levels aren't what's taken into account, it's the total class level. Got it! So it may, hypothetically, be worth it.

Once per day, turns per level is hardly worth the trouble of raising WIS to 14 with a melee build. It's my opinion that it's not worth it, but of course is handy if you make other use of your WIS.

If Blackguards had proper spellcasting like Paladin or Ranger, i'd be more inclined to take 14 WIS.

You haven't got any room for DEX or stealth utility. I was thinking of Invis and GS as your way of sneaking up on enemies. After WIS 18, you'd max your STR for damage and AB. Gimmick builds have an extremely small potential for focus; rather, they rely on a wide variety of tricks, making them weaker in most circumstances than the builds that focus on maxing out a single class and ability.

Anyway, Assassin14 should get you most of the trickbag, although your assassin abilities' DC may be a lowish.

EDIT: Uce is the cow I am referring to. He should use the sig and I will keep on flashing it until he does. Like... Uce is pronounced similar to use, haha get it? I'm awesome.

Yep. Smite Good = BG

Smite Evil = Paladin + CoT

Yes, my bad. Poorly worded in my haste!

I think Sune deciphered it well enough. Another question around the same mechanics. A paladin gets Smite Evil, and a Divine Champion gets Purge Infidel, correct? If I were to spend a use a Smite evil, would I then lose a use of Purge Infidel as well?

Edit: Ah, I see it was simply a matter of not correcting myself earlier. Yeah, what I had above was wrong. I figured it out and meant to come back, then discovered the answer myself and forgot to properly cover my tracks. ;)

Well, not really, because Purge Infidel works a whole lot differently than Smite. But you would have three uses of smite and one use of Purge Infidel, sure!

That's beautiful! But what would my initial Stats look like for this build?

Ugly. With regular human:

STR 18
DEX 8
CON 8
INT 12
WIS 8
CHA 16

You'll have to take your last bard level on 27 to get Lasting Winspiration and so that you get Dev on 30.

Well the concept is built for an Elf, so her Con score will be 6 with that build :/ Should I even consider 6 constitution?

I am far from a build expert but I can say that an 8 constitution on a melee character is a death sentence... a 6 con most likely is unbearable. It isn't a matter of if you're going to get hit, it's when, and if you have an AC that requires crits, a 6 con is one crit from a terrible terrible fate... though I haven't reached 30 yet, I found just leveling a 8 con to be too much.

It occurs to me that this build could actually wield a Dire Mace or Two Bladed Sword... that or a katana/bastard sword... dev crit is a waste here I'm assuming? So, what do you do with skills? Only epic character skills would be available.

I'm sorry for dragging this out for so long...but,

Devastating Critical is out based on the fact I'd only have around 100hp at 30,

I was thinking about what would be the better of these two builds,

20Bard/4BG/6CoT
20Bard/8BG/2CoT

More than 5 BG is a waste. You hit the dodge cap.

EDIT: Wait!! IT just hit me!

20Bard/4Fighter/6Divine Champion it is then?

Divine Champion fits the concept more than Blackguard anyways since Blackguard is not an anti-paladin and kind of more like a warlock with a more divine focus. This build is just dripping with feats.

I'm thinking 14Bard/3Fighter/3Divine Champion pre-epic

If in fact I was not worried about UMD or Tumble dump would a 17C/6 Fighter/5KC build do okay? The fighter levels for the feats/BAB/etc?

Your spells will easily be dispelled, but luckily your song, gmw and keen won't.
