Whoever doesnt feel motivated to play death as serious business will keep underplaying it. And since the ingame system works as such, they are in their right, unless stated otherwise IMHO. I'm hoping that one day this major problem will be patched. We all know that fixing completely something is hard, but settling for patching it just might make this game far more enjoyable.

I tried the counting thing too, but got OOC tells saying they were afk and I should wait. several minutes later, all my buffs are gone. I tried to not piss anyone off, and I just got screwed because I was willing to compramise. This happened to be the Baneite Leader at the time, and it wasn't the last time this current group tried to cheat without being obvious. This sort of thing gets a reputation....the Baneites get that reputation, even if new people are playing. I feel bad for anyone in this new batch of Baneites, because I get the feeling that they are not the same batch of players.

Just something to think about next time. You were trying to be courteous, which is admirable honestly, but that was complete BS. Don't care who did it. I think if I'm ever in the same situation I'll just send them a nice response telling them they will likely return to a dead character :3 edit to the above: I realized I -would- give consideration in the case that I received an agreement that if buffs ended they could be recast without immediate attack so that both parties still had them. Then I would screenie it in case they go back on their word. Because prudence. And yes Hackmus, forever yes. Haha. I need to use that in the future.

Losers whine, winners must be cheating and anyone who becomes frustrated over anything is clearly a wuss who can't take it like a man.
There now that that generic hogwash is done, and I stating now I have nothing against anyone ooc my chars opinions are entirely IC and vary from one to another greatly.
Alignment, faction and religion all mean nothing it doesn't matter if its Bane or Cyric or Torm or your mom. The second someone decides to set someone to hostile things start to get ugly. Yes conflict is a part of any story and setting, yes the threat of violence is one of the most simple forms of conflict. However with all this talk of meta-gaming and hostility there is an equal degree of meta-gaming in making a level 30 powerbuilt pvp oriented character and proceeding to situation yourself in a way where others have no choice but to engage you in PvP. I say no choice because the "out" left for people is often submission, death, capture or cowardice and certain peoples RP and staying true to that RP wont allow this and there in lays a great deal of frustration. When someone makes a pvp Monkey than goes into a popular roadside, druids forest or sets up near a holy place and starts to do something that there is no way the local faction can ignore or take an out on because it would compromise the integrity of their rp it makes people feel bullied and forced into a no win situation by someone who is bigger and stronger than them. Lets face it no one likes be backed into a wall. When it occurs multiple times in nearly the exact same circumstance it goes beyond that and starts to feel like a tiring exercise and waste of time.
If all you want to do is taunt people into PvP then your on the wrong kind of server. PVP has a time, a place and is a reasonable response in some situations. However and I can not say this clearly enough that regularly taunting or threatening people in a way you know RP demands they can't or wont take an "out" is just as bad as people attacking someone just because they worship the "wrong" god.
The long and the Short is that everyone on every side has a responsibility to stay as IC as possible and retain some degree of fairplay ooc. The Banites have lost multiple castles and have become the most hated organization ever to grace Amia. That's their cross to bear and to learn from. Just don't waste our time trying to blame everyone else as being at fault because they lost or hate you for no reason, or calling people names or insulting their rp subtle or bluntly because to use a very old quote "Don't act like your crap smells better than anybody else".

I don't have problems usually with pvp. Rp gets to a point and i my send out a tell of doc comment that i am setting folks hostile INCASE things get physical. Doing this every player knows where they stand. Then offer the "Defending" person an ic out via some means such as teleporting out. Then its just a case of the best man win. Always fun trying to beat a group of banites with azzy

Democracy does not work in this game. It was a motto of one of the most respected DM I have ever played with. You cannot satisfy everyone, never. Keep the rule about griefing alive and include common sense - who breaks it gets slapped. Who abuse it gets slapped. Who lacks common sense gets slapped. More rules = more ways for bitching and arguing. Make it simple and sound.

I personally think if we want to have a PvP discussion, we should have a separate thread so non-forum lurkers like us lifeless nerds will click on the thread to participate but...
I guess I have two things to contribute!
The first is that I think Ravenovf brings up a good point. So many times my offered way out is stupid. "Oh you didn't have to participate in it". I'm sorry, you're slaughtering people in my town and what, I'm just supposed to go, "oh okay. Have fun killing my citizens". >.> No? It doesn't work like that.
The second is what I don't like about PvP. It requires a whole set of skills unrelated to RP. This is not to say someone who is good at PvP is shit at RP. But PvP itself isn't related to RP yet the result of PvP dictates RP. Does it matter to RP you're a power builder? Not really. Does it matter to RP you have the k00l l00tz? Not really. Does it matter at all to RP that you're just a slow dumbass (i.e., myself) who goes "oh... what...? Oh my HP is gone..." due to how fast combat transpires in NWN despite its incredibly slow reaction time? Not really. But all of these unrelated PvP factors dictate how RP from there should happen. It feels OOC to me too.
I should say, this is also true of PvDM-Spawned-Monsters as well, where a fate of a town is entirely dictated by how well you can PvM. How that relates to RP? I don't see it. They're different domains that's somehow forced into the same one.
With that said, as someone that gets killed the first in any DM event or spontaneous PvP, I take my death graciously. It is, however, incredibly boring to be lying there forever not doing anything. It's not like my characters can observe events through death, so reading what's going on while one of my character's dead is potentially confusing and not at all worthwhile. I wish people would just PM me once I'm officially alive so I can stop paying attention to the screen and go get tea or something. >.>

How about: "Do not do the following: harass other players OOCly, take IC conflicts to be an OOC one, deliberately antagonize other players by insulting or disrespecting them, go out of your way to seek conflicts where it isn't warranted ICly, disregard other player's fun - if they aren't having it, back off and reevaluate."

In the case of Banites versus Tormites, since no matter what there'd be no way a Tormite would just let a Banite walk by without confrontation, is 'giving chase' but purposefully letting them escape a justifiable 'out'?

(And before someone argues, yes, epic loot can be a huge deciding factor. Ever try KDing someone wearing the +30 discipline gloves when they have max discipline ranks already? Just an example) Well, that and I'm sorry I don't find it necessary to beat on other PCs. 666WaysToHell wrote: In the case of Banites versus Tormites, since no matter what there'd be no way a Tormite would just let a Banite walk by without confrontation, is 'giving chase' but purposefully letting them escape a justifiable 'out'? True, though the DC items can be more powerful than epic loot, too ;p So it doesn't help either! lol Point just being PvP is irritating as well because gear factors so heavily into it. Some people have PvP gear, I've heard, which makes me sadface. It just grates against my immersion in a way.

How does that ruin any immersion? If you know you're going to encounter an illithid that always seems to use acid sheath, and you have acid immunity on a ring, why would you ever not wear it? It would further be unimmersive if your character turned a blind eye towards their own survival and didn't do everything within their own grasp to ensure it so. I don't understand why having different gear would ruin anyone's immersion, unless I just completely misunderstood the intent of your post.

Needled247 wrote: The k00ler loots, and OP spells can be obtained through DC's too, so lets keep in mind that even if you're fighting someone well equipped... This, for the most part, is a silly argument. I think any time an argument is presented, it should at least be an argument of equal or greater in value. Epic loot can be grinded by anyone that can grind, which only requires 2 things: Time and ability to create a chara that can beat one or more epic bosses that have epic loot bins. That's it. That's a ridiculously low bar to meet. Just having time and ability to RP well does not equate to DC spells or items. DC spells and/or items must first have sufficient DCs to create them, which is not produced as a result of time or a specific build you invested into. Secondly, they must be requested, which is something that the player must desire. Thirdly, the request must be approved in terms of game play balance, lore, appropriateness and the fit to the server, and other variables that DMs judge the request upon. The process involved in getting DC items/spells is nothing comparable to that of just grinding. But as I've said before. I don't think being good at PvP and being good at RP is mutually exclusive. I'm sure it's not entirely uncommon for people with DC items to also have epic loot from epic loot bins that they've grinded themselves. I just don't think RP and PVP are related domains of game play either. In my opinion, I think it's fairly ridiculous something that is unrelated to RP skills have any amount of influence in the world. But that's just my opinion.

DC's are a factor of time, and luck and circumstance just as much as Epic loot can be.
No matter what they've balanced it off of, I've never actually seen someone get a DC item that was bad or worse than the epic equivalent. I've seen better but not worse. Maybe it exists, but it's few and far between. Futhermore DC items carry ridiculously OP properties like "Immunity to Fear" or anything like that, that doesn't exist anywhere else in the game. All this for an average cost of 20 Dream Coins.
I can't argue with your last paragraph though, as being good at PvP is completely separate, however, to blame your loss on gear and claim that you're an RP'er is just a lazy way to cry powergamer. You can RP and boss hunt occasionally, you know? Or maybe you could start a business and buy and sell epic loot.. like some other... people... we know? There's plenty of ways to get loot and actually the slowest way to get what you want is probably actually to farm them.
Lastly, I will add that if you put a solid amount of effort into applying basic grade school math into an excel spreadsheet, you can make the best situation out of even an RP build, for PvP purposes. Afterall, PvP is mainly about positioning and mathematics. If you cannot do either of those, no amount of loot is going to help you.

'PvP gear' is a gearset devoted towards PvPing. Which is stretching the boundaries of IC/OOC in my mind. I have nothing against carrying extra equipment in PvM because of survival like you said. But to have a completely separate set of gear for PvP... that's just the player on an OOC level going 'Hey, I'm going to get into PvP so I better wear this'. It can sort of be reasoned IC, but in my mind it's a stretch.

It's not really a stretch in my mind, and I'm not sure where you're pulling that logic from. Think about how often you change your own wardrobe to go different places. You wear different shit for even something even as simple as going out to a bar.

A little too far this time, Naiv, really... having different sets of equipment for different situations is about adaptability and survival. Same as you do not wear bikiny during the winter. I'd hardly call it OOC to switch equipment that fits the situation that is or that is to come.

I do not see the problem in concern to epic loot and dc items. As long as you do not assume every character in the forgotten realms has the same talent in regard to combat and holds the same power of gear, then it is something that actually makes it more interresting.
I will take Darthion and Sharina as an example, and the factions they led.
Sharina had a good cleric combat build in the end, but nothing unique and her gear was pretty odinary save for two exceptions in items she got through roleplay. She was just not as talented in combat as others. That did not demean the character for me in any fashion.
Darthion had an incredibly powerful build and was armed to the teeth in epic items. She knew she would not stand a chance against him, and from her point of view he was a violent beast of chromatic draconic heiritage blessed by the dark powers of his vile god. Did that make me feel as if it was unfair if she lost against him? Not at all. His soul would burn in the hells for the powers he exchanged it for and she would just need to use a different method in trying to bring him down, like forming alliances or striking when she had the advantage.
The Church of Bane invested enormously in it's military capability through the training of it's members and providing powerful gear for them. The Eternal Order did to a much smaller extend and focused more on training how to determine to find necromancers, how to remove taints, how to tend to plague victims and how to violently interrogate suspects for information. In an open war the Eternal Order would have lost flat out if it stood alone. Did that demean the Eternal Order for me? Not at all.
So I really fail to see the problem. Especially as there is so much more that has a baring on a characters ability to influence conflict rp and any other plot. I have known really bad builds who made a huge impact and epic stocked 'power builds' who made little to no difference on amia.

I think I get what you're saying, but I don't think a Cleric build is the best of examples for it, considering Magic Vestment and Shield of faith leave any Cleric with enough levels quite a bit more room to improve their gear however they may choose.

It does not matter what class, level or race you choose for this example as long as it is not a powerful combat focused build with an abundance of epic gear. Feel free to replace Sharina with Robin Wood, a level 30 ranger who is the leader of a small bandit group dedicated to steal from the wicked and give to the virtous or with Fryar Buck who is a level 5 drunk quarterstaff wielding monk so fat his speed is reduced to that of an ooze.
Sharina and Darthion were both clerics, led successful factions often involved in conflict rp, but she unlike him did not have a powerful build or a great deal of epic gear. I chose her for their basic similitarity and differences in gear and build. Because as she was my character I could also speak from experience. In addition what was impressive to me about Darthion was not his gear or build, but his rp, clearly showing powerful epic geared builds do not equal bad roleplay in any shape or form, hence he was selected to be my other example.

There is also a lot of strategy that can be employed in PvP when the odds are against a character. All the epic gear possible to equip may not be enough to win if you have no sense of tactical strategy and your opponent does.

I don't know why this discussion is in a Faction thread, but I do not see anything at all wrong with carrying multiple sets of gear. What I do mind though, is when people suddenly switch in and out of a suit of armour in the space of half a second, especially without assistance. Having "PVP" gear does not exist, you only get gear that makes you more effective in certain situations. For example stuff that would make you more effective against undead, or humans, or outsiders such and such.
The same applies to Wizards and Clerics, preparing different spells before the battle takes place, based upon what you expect to encounter. Sometimes you cannot expect it though, or prepare everything, so you take some universal things. Saying people can not have separate sets of gear is like saying Wizards or Clerics cannot change their spell selection ever.
Oh and as far as boss farming goes. How do you think most of the epic heroes that you hear about in stories get their stuff? By sitting around in a town doing nothing, or by going out on an adventure and looking for them? Sadly the only place to find them in Amia is on the backside of a boss without the aid of a DM. People get their epic gear, in Amia and out of it, by doing things. Not by doing nothing. If you cannot be bothered to go and find the items, then that is your loss. The people who can be bothered get the advantage, and that is nobody's fault but your own. (I personally hate boss farming and cannot be bothered, but #yolo)

A case of muling stripped his char which lead to him permakilling it rather.. oddly. .. He was also a designer/ tester. And started to flaunt the updates before the updates were in, he wasn't to co-operative with the dm team on that point. He wasn't even playing on the server anymore and thus the team decided to permaban him. He waa really an awesome player. But in the end of his career he was just hanging around to cause trouble. This is incorrect. Both me and Calix were stripped for having given one of the faction members too much junk equipment as the person was leveling up (unaware at what value it had piled up to), leading to us exceeding the allowed limit. Stripping the equipment was a rather harsh punishment (for which it was quite strongly debated within the DM staff at the time, as to wether it should have been enforced in the instance or not), but the rules were the rules, and such it was decided that we were to be given the exact same punishment as those who were intended on intentionally breaking the rules. There was no ban whatsoever. I geared up Darthion within a month, and unfortunately turned up with even better equipment than I had to begin with. I didn't flaunt any updates, either. I posted a thread, which I made in the testers forum, to the public forums, as I had a strong opinion against the updates that went in, which opposed the conclusions made in that very thread. This did not result in me being permabanned, or banned in any other way, either. Didn't make too many people happy though. The very last point I'm willing to agree upon, however. During the last forum appearances, I had nothing but grief to share. Yossarin wrote: The team did not ban him. I did. And I believe that ban, being a ban from the forums, is still in effect, unless I make a public apology for my attitude in previous postings. DerkDerkistan wrote: Am I the only person who remembers the side of Darthion that PvP'd constantly for little to no reason at all without even offering IC outs? I nearly quit the server within my first month playing because he and the Banites confronted my character and said "You can either come with us so we can sacrifice you or we'll kill you right now." I hated PvP. I always, always gave both IC and OOC outs. Since I didn't actually want to engage in PvP. Close to all PvP encounters which I found myself in, was instigated by the opposing parties. Either by their indirect actions, or their full on unannounced assault. This was the sole reason as to why I made Darthion into a powerbuild with tons of epic gear, and spent an unhealthy amount of hours of practicing PvP in order to become good at it. Prior to coming to Amia, I had absolutely no idea on how to make a good character build, or what to use in PvP. I could barely survive in PvM. My sole interest has always been, and always was, the pure essence of good, rewarding, fulfilling and fun RP. As soon as it became publicly known that Darthion was a Banite, I was repeatedly killed by characters I had never met or heard of, for more than a week, due to the simple reason that he was a Banite. My efforts in gaining PvP prowess, was to -avoid- PvP. Figuring, that if I became good enough at it, people would think twice before starting a conflict. The reality, was that Darthion became a living and breathing trophy, waiting and wanting to be collected by pretty much anyone. Even if they didn't had a grudge against him IC, or me OOC. This fact always tormented me. I believe Tormak can be witness to several whines and bitching on my behalf, as I expressed my sadness of how people would continuously seek every opportunity made available to start PvP with me. I felt it took away the focus from the RP, and brought little but OOC grief. The OOC grief, moreso, was unfortunately almost always bestowed upon the opposing party, as I had an uncanny lucky way of more or less always coming out on top, as the winner, of those PvP battles which I was dragged into. I have probably made my share of errors and mishapenings as well. And if any of you have been the unintentional victims of those, I do apologize. For that was never my intention.

The easiest one was always to let the other party run away, if they didn't want to engage in PvP. I always informed new players of this OOCly, if I hadn't met them before, so that they wouldn't get the feeling of them being griefed or given no options.

This is hilarious. If you really wanted to avoid PVP youda made a shifter pacivist who when messed with would open the can of woopass. Not a banite who goes around initiating pvp. On that note, why is pvp seen by some as something to be avoided and not just another part of role play? It happens on the roadways of America everyday.

Depending on what type of Banite character you decide to play, conflict, in most of its forms, sort of comes along with the job. And through that, PvP. In those situations it's usually quite necessary to have some bang for the buck. This is what many Banite players experienced in the past. Most of those who were recruited back in the days were chosen for their RP abilities and style, not their characters builds. Those who decided to stick around, usually ended up changing their character build since they got fed up with being continuously hammered in PvP. Even when they had little interest themselves, in engaging in PvP. Moreso, Bane doesn't really favour those who end up at the losing end of the stick. ICly. Which makes it a lil more difficult as well. PvP is something you come to want to avoid, since it usually ends up with a lot of OOC grief and whining. Usually comes down to pride, and people being incapable of accepting the odd loss.

It's hard to see your Aasimar super paladin of righteous fury get beaten down - He is suppose to be a super sayan murder machine and singlehandedly take out the entire church of (Insert evil god). I played a Shifter in the church of bane two years ago - It was painful. Very painful. One person saw me in amia forest and suddenly 10x Sendings had been sent away to kholingen, the shrine and the druids. My little butt-hole was gang-banged big time After that i sprinkled some Monk levels on my shifter and took dragonshape Who can blame me?

It was rather humorous to see your character get repeatedly beaten though, Svensk.
Sort of brought out that more or less non-existing nursing nature of the Banites.

Hehe..Hehe. Well, It probably was But my point still stands - There was a reason for a majority of the banites to gear up and build/train to counter the increased hostility towards their persona. Both Mago's and my post reflect why. Out of curiosity, Mago - Aren't you violating the forumban from yossarin now?

Can you really, truly and with a straight face, claim that I "initiated" the conflict where your character was involved? I think not. As much as I want to avoid inane PvP, I do want to play a follower of Bane. The fighting bit is a necessary evil, so to speak - one that I've long since accepted.
