Mages don't even count. They can practically solo anything with prudent choice of summon and familiar. Just buff them to kingdom come and mass haste through everything.
Now try to solo same thing with two-hander warrior type that isn't divine cheat class, with potions you can get from vendor only. Tell me how you fare solo past lvl 10.

He's right, unfortunately the coolest characters are the most difficult to level most times.

Is Petrification turn-based or perma on Amia?

Nope! Buffing my Sorc to throw some lethal Flesh-to-Stone spells. Mainly asked as:

Quote:
Under the "Normal" and easier difficulty settings, the petrification lasts one round per caster level when the target is a player character. Under the harder settings, and always for non-player characters, the petrification is permanent (although, as usual, all spell effects are removed when the caster rests).

I think it's perma on summons though. Or at least longer.

Two questions about the house rental system.

1. Can i somehow upgrade from one room and 30 plc's, to two rooms and 45 plc's -while- maintaining the current layout?

2. I have a 1 week option rented, if i choose to "Extend your rent time" before my current rent is up, is it cumulative?

1) I... think? Not sure, never tried it. I hope so :o

2) No, sadly it's not cumulative. I think it says it in one of the prompts. It just starts the week (or month) from that day. Kinda irritating.

Amia is set up for RP and Adventures. It is open style RP. Wanna be a boss runner? Awesome! There are bosses for you! We only ask you don't use Smilies when talking in character!

Pretty much. I have next to zero interest in sitting around in town talking. I'm not offended that other people enjoy that or anything, I just like being out in the world exploring and adventuring. Don't care whether that's IC or not, like I've mentioned.

Dakotaen wrote:
I could've stopped reading right here, because Amia IS an RP server so yes, that is exactly who this server caters to; Roleplayers. I did keep reading, though.

I'd reread it, then, since you missed my point. Amia feels like it catering to players like *me*, not to your average roleplayer. To people who are used to enduring hours of grinding and tediousness and frustration. I suspect you'd prefer to attract the roleplayers primarily - which is why this seems so odd.

Dakotaen wrote:
Once again, because this is an RP server. IC > OOC, always.

Then why do we get messages about how long until we can rest again? Or about how much experience we earn? Or about other players looking at the player list? Or about people looking for a group with the party finder? Etc. All of these are OOC but they exist because, fundamentally, we're playing a game on a server.

If this was a tabletop DM campaign, the DM (ideally) would not have a level 8 party run into a demilich that annihilates them without ample warning. (S)he could change the enemies present or guide the exploration. A server cannot do that - and we're already acknowledging this is a game in many other ways.

Dakotaen wrote:
In the end, whether you call it easier or friendlier doesn't matter that much. You're achieving something with means that are entirely unnecessary to use in an OOC manner, because it could all be done as an IC thing. Again, IC > OOC.

Except the IC thing involves tabbing out of the server to read a forum, which is entirely OOC. Forums do not exist in Amia - they're an OOC construct. And I strongly disagree that people should be encouraged to search through forums to find basic information when they're starting out - especially since they're already likely needing to adapt to the ruleset and figure out the lore and all of that kind of stuff. Don't overload new players.

Dakotaen wrote:
Again, this isn't an MMO, adventuring, exploring and searching for things is part of the game. Could/Should there be improvements to the quest conversations to improve the difficulty of finding the target of the quest? Absolutely, but all IC.

If you're wearing identical gear, how does the NPC giving you the quest know whether you're a level 10 fighter or a 20 fighter or 30 fighter? You *might* be able to argue that you could generally size up the ability of a person by looking at them - except we can't view challenge ratings so apparently that's not true IC. Not to mention the very fact that a quest is intended for level 20 versus 10 is OOC - does anyone know how many levels Frodo gained in LotR? I sure don't. Levels are an OCC construct in and of themselves!

Dakotaen wrote:
I think you're exaggerating wildly on how hard Amia is here. To take out the two quick insta-quests, Speedy's packages all have explanations of where to deliver them (my biggest issue with this quest is that I find it dull, to be honest), and all maps of Cordor are marked so you can find things. The kobold quest might be slightly difficult to catch, but it says "north and east," go north to the next area, then easy, and you're where the kobold cave's entrance is. If you can't be bothered searching for it you're just lazy, in my oppinion.

Oh good, we already had a wildly different starting experience.

I never even found out about Speedy's packages until level 4 (and that was something someone told me OOC). I was busy killing rats according to what the tour guide guy said. So I not only skipped the Speedy Quest but I picked up a different "quest" instead. The kobolds weren't bad, no - but then Gilbert (who gave me the quest) told me to go talk to Gilbert (???) to pick up another quest.

But then what after the Kobolds? Apparently if I had done the speedy quest I would have known that one of the mage guards (unlike the rest of the mage guards) actually gave a quest for the orcs (found this out OOC) - so I was able to do that. And then OOC I was told about the maw. And this only happened because someone who knew me from another PW a few years ago recognized my log-in ID and said hello.

Dakotaen wrote:
To add to that, Amia should never give up what it is to attract people. The day it does that, it stops being Amia.

You really think trying to improve the experience of the first 10 levels or something and giving a bit more general guidance on OOC things like quest levels and area levels are going to destroy the soul of the server?

Dakotaen wrote:
Many people would, because of the simple fact that 20-30% less damage is huge.

How many people don't constantly adventure with Bless and Aid potions active? That's 20-30% increased damage for most characters. How many skip armor skin? That's 20-30% increased physical damage for most characters. How about melee characters that don't tumble dump? That's 30-45% increase physical damage for most characters.

Or let's look at a 30 fighter versus like a 11 fighter/19 WM. Fighter has two extra feats in the epic levels (so at most two Great Strengths for 1 more AB and damage or two Epic Toughness - assuming bonus feats - for 40 more HP) - but otherwise has the same HP, AC, maybe 1-2 less damage (if he takes 2 Great Strengths) in exchange for losing 3-4 AB (30-60% damage increase) and the extra crit bonuses (roughly a 40% increase versus a crit vulnerable foe).

Is a pure fighter relatively weak? Sure - but my point is that we already have characters with power gaps vastly larger than that 20-30%.

Now the funny thing is that I agree with you - 20-30% damage is absolutely massive. I think even 3-5% is absolutely massive - I'm used to trying to literally squeeze out an extra 0.5-1% of damage or health or whatever because it truly matters in my environment. But most people in NWN don't view 20-30% as being huge - they don't think in those terms and the game is not even remotely tuned around that mattering for the most part.

All that said, I didn't mention this in my previous big post because it is rather off-topic - I just wanted to clarify some of my reasoning. I'm not even saying it's an awesome idea that should be implemented - I just think people are overreacting to the idea given the state of NWN already.

Naivatkal wrote:
I see, easy enough mistake on wording. It sounded as if you meant 'forget RP'; being that's not the case I take that back. We aren't 'RP nazis', so long as someone's not acting like a troll we don't care much haha. There's varying degrees of RPing, after all!

Might be a language barrier thing - not sure what your first language was but I've seen people mention how it isn't English for many people. I literally meant what I said: I don't really care about RP, literally meaning I have no strong opinion on it one way or the other.

Pretty much. I exist solely to babysit my summon and familiar most of the time. Bit silly, IMO, but I figured it was done because otherwise mages would too weak, relatively speaking, given the rest timer and the high HP of mobs.

Remal wrote:

Am I able to actually get reasonable gear? I mean, I don't think I've changed a single piece of gear in the last like....8 levels. And that was changing Nymph Cloak +2 and Boots of Striding +2 into +3 versions. Maybe I've just had bad luck with drops or have no clue where the good vendors are. I remember reading how someone said they used the Gibbering Maw bracers all the way until level 12. Well, I'm level 19 and have not seen anything remotely comparable yet, let alone superior.

Also, 2H generally isn't worth it at higher levels because shields are brokenly overpowered. To put this in perspective, a player at level 1 would have like 3 extra AC from a shield or he could use a 2H weapon to do like 40% more damage.

Now factor in that size of the weapon is typically irrelevant to the bonus damage from innate properties or things like Flame Weapon and the fact that shields can go up to at least +5 AC from Magic Vestment and you probably get something more like 8 extra AC versus 20-25% more damage at higher levels. The entire tradeoff changes since shield scaling is broken - we could have an entire discussion on this and ways to fix the situation but that's beyond the scope of this thread.

Hm. Turns out an option for upgrade is hiding under "Extend your rent time". I wouldn't have guessed if you didn't hint at it, thanks.

PS. As a sidenote, while i'm here, i have to say Balkoth has some valid points in there. And yeah, wouldn't mind seeing where this leads if he were to start a thread in Improving Amia.

OK, so. My husband was able to use a wand I had (Lesser spell breach, it had 9 charges). Any reason he wouldn't be able to use another LSB wand? I made them both with Liress, nothing was different betweeen them.

Just a guess, but doesn't the gp value of a wand increase with its number of charges? If so, then maybe does he have only enough UMD to use a mostly-depleted wand?

I thought UMD for wands was based on spell level?

Yup, just for scrolls. NWNWiki UMD

NWNWiki wrote:
Check: The base difficulty class (DC) of this task is determined by the value of the item, and modified by the type of emulation the character is attempting. If the character attempts to emulate a specific race, the DC increases by 5; if he attempts to emulate a specific alignment, the DC increases by 10. Emulating a specific class does not modify the base DC.

You must make a DC check of 25 + the level of the spell to cast a spell from a scroll if the difficulty mode of the game is set to Hardcore or higher.

I believe Amia is set to Hardcore.

How do you explain all those low level folks with 4 ranks in UMD and usually negative charisma being able to consistently cast flame weapon scrolls? It should be impossible with 27 DC UMD check?

Depends on their class. If it's a class that -has- flameweapon, UMD don't mean nuffin.

I was talking about non-casters. My rogue with 4 UMD had no trouble using scroll even during combat, where rolls would be forced (not auto 20 like for heal check when outta combat).

Edit: I also never saw any UMD rolls being made when I used high tier spell scrolls like Disjunction with Malatril. He never failed those, even when difficulty would be 34, and he had 30 (29) UMD. He should have failed them occasionally on low roll.

Amia is set to hardcore. The UMD check upon scroll use can be toggled off.

Certain abilities+spells gain their full potential under Hardcore.

E.g:

More importantly...

- Players can be critically hit
- Players trigger an attack of opportunity while using a potion
- Players trigger an attack of opportunity while using a ranged weapon in melee

Basically, "Hardcore rules" means "Players don't get special advantages."

A Divine Mythal can be used to put 5/- Damage Reduction on an equippable item. Is that 5/- reduction to all damage? Or is it slashing/bludgeoning/Piercing/whatevs?

And isn't it a bit extreme to use a Divine Mythal for "so little?" Or am I just not putting enough stock in 5/-? :)

Do invisible shield models exist on Amia? IE: is it possible to request one to make your fencer look slightly less retarded?

I'd worry about finding a divine mythal first.

Oh I'm not planning on "just grabbing" one of those, I was just looking at the crafting sheat and noticed it. 5/- just seems to little to get for a Divine Mythal. But again, it could just be me being completely out of touch with how good 5/- is. :D

It's alright. I mean, it's only one power, and it works against all physical damage, which counts for a lot (but not elemental, divine, pos/neg, magical). If you have a lot of HP it can be pretty nice, since effectively it's +5 hp per hit that you survive. Crippling against rogues/dex rangers who can't get their bonus damage on, or WMs who can't crit you for whatever reason. Otherwise I don't think it makes a huge amount of difference. There are better boosts to spend a divine mythal on.

My barb has the mighty rage feat, giving her 3 extra rages, but unfortunately they require me to click on a target to activate. Is it possible to leto her normal rage to 10 and remove the mighty rage uses?

A Divine Mythal can be used to put 5/- Damage Reduction on an equippable item. Is that 5/- reduction to all damage? Or is it slashing/bludgeoning/Piercing/whatevs?

And isn't it a bit extreme to use a Divine Mythal for "so little?" Or am I just not putting enough stock in 5/-? :)

According to the Mythal Crafting System page, the Divine Mythal gives Damage Resistance, not Reduction.

An excerpt from NWNWiki Damage Reduction page:
"Damage reduction stacks with, and is applied after, both damage resistance and damage immunity. (So a creature with damage reduction 10/+5 and bludgeoning resistance 20/- will ignore the first 30 points of damage from each bludgeoning attack made with less than a +5 enhancement.)"

So potentially, you could use a Divine for 5/- Resistance, and a Perfect for +5/5 Reduction, offering you potentially 10 less damage taken per hit.

I've not used a Divine Mythal before, so the part on the Mythal Crafting System page where it says "special" may mean you have to choose a specific type of damage you resist. I dunno.

No. We don't Leto characters that way. Then you'd have an advantage over every other barbarian on the module... though it's only a click. I mean, just... click yourself. It's not running a marathon.

Do shields count as weaponry/armory or equipable items, in regards to mythal crafting?

On Mythal Crafting equipable items; if I wanted to put +5 Armour Class on to an amulet, and overwrite the +4, would the DC be higher than if I removed the +4 then added the +5?

You can see what the DC is before making the roll. If you're about to make a +5 on top of a +4, you can remove the +4 anyway so... The DC might be lower if you remove it first i imagine.

So what is the matter with this Aiden the Blue in Caraigh who keeps giving me the same quest I can only do once. Or is he just senile?

What is the weapon type for the Chair item made by PC crafters, club? You can all thank Aiseth for my newest character idea by the way.

It doesn't show up under clubs in the toolset. Fish and bottles do
