I have read some things regarding familiars and alignments on the request forum and I have a question about it as well now. Since I cant post in others requests topics I will post it here instead.

When I made Harold he was LN and I picked a raven as his familiar (animal so N), Harold then started to run around Amia and do things, learn things etc etc and as a result he shifted to a more good alignment.

Thats all fine and dandy but now his alignment is not one step from his familars alignment anymore (LG->N.) Does that mean his familiar leaves him? If not, then what happens?

Any lore input here is much apprechiated. Thanks in advance!

Familiar alignment has never been enforced on Amia. If it is questioned in a Request, that's only because they have higher, additional standards that don't apply to normal play.

Lorewise, I have no idea. I imagine the PHB has the rule under Wizard.

I wouldn't mind seeing a small percentile chance of failure to summon for people who have summons that are opposite their Good/Evil alignment axis.

Why? The magician summons the entity into servitude whether it agrees or disagrees, regardless of alignment. No one said the summoned creature has to enjoy or like the servitude, but the magic compels it all the same. See my recent post in some thread in Lore about that.

What Yoss said. That's also why in PnP unlike NWN, not everyone who -can- have a familiar, does.

Furthermore, in PnP, alignment isn't a factor with the basic animal familiars. The only time aligngment comes into play was with the Improved Familiar feat and the potential of bonding with intelligent creatures.

For mundane animals like ravens, panthers, etc., an alignment of "neutral" isn't really intended to represent a deep ethical commitment to a philosophy of neutrality. It's intended to represent the lack of an alignment. It should have no effect on anything, ever.
