Oh, of course. But there's a diffenrence between "May I suggest that you prepare stoneskins? We're going to deal with a lot of physical damage." and "Fucking buff me already!!"
And I didn't generalise people offering help as gits. Nor was I referring to constructive comments about builds. I was indeed pointing out the same thing Paladin was pointing out; people wh owant you to play a class THIS specific way because they decide to, and fuck your roleplay flavor because I gotta kill that stuff. They want you to become their lil buff bitch.
And, it is part of the learning process to make mistakes, especially in video games. I usually offer help in the form of "If you have questions/need help, feel free to ask" instead of directly pointing out what's wrong. Some people prefer to learn by themselves and don't want the easy solution pushed over to them.
I agree with mirvala-'s rather colorful post here. I have no problem with tips now and then. "We'll need such and such spell," is fine. It was a big help in one instance knowing that I'd need Greater Breach in a dungeon I had never been to before.
I'm not the best Wizard, or even the best NWN player out there. Fine, I admit it; guilty as charged. I do at least try to at least hold myself to a reasonable standard; I'll pay attention to the party and toss out some last-minute spells to keep the party upright. I'll do my best to keep everyone's buffs up and extended. I don't need to be casting Weird and turning myself into a Red Dragon for every encounter. I'd rather not be the person who's just there for the lucky loot rolls and the experience and I always feel bad when I don't have something cast on someone else.
What issue I do have is with the people who are bigshot character builders who tell me that my character isn't any good or that I took the wrong feats or that I shouldn't have specialized in Illusion. I also dislike it when someone who's just using the party as a stepping stone kills off all RP just so the party gets through the dungeon faster for max XP/Mins and cool stuff. One time I was teamed up with another guy fighting beastmen and we had an awesome RP vibe going on. Another guy joined us and kept pushing us to go faster and talk less. Over tells my RP partner and I echoed our regret at having taken this guy along. I tried to be patient about the whole affair, but he was getting rather frustrated by it.
Guess what? I've never seen the guy I was RPing with again. Sir Speedy still plays, though (I see him on the player list a lot). I'm sure he's level 30 by now and has more gold than Gael's ever seen.
Which of these two was better for Amia's environment, the RPer who apparently quit, or the guy who just had to get through that dungeon like nobody's business?

The overwhelming theme of all of these recent threads is that far too much happening IG is going on OOC. There need be no OOC discussion beyond the possibility of checking ecl's for party members. Even that can be done IC.
Quote:
"Nice to meet you Monster Hunter. What is the most dangerous creature you have encountered on this isle so far?"
"Oh ya know... met these nasty werebeasts in a big bad forest just outside of Wharftown"
"Oh yeah! I know that place. Went there not long ago. Hey, you wanna go see if more have crept out of the bushes and whack them together?"
Simple!! Keep it IC as much as possible.
Next.
Quote:
"Hey... you're a mage right? Are you capable of casting that stoney stuff to protect me or maybe put some fire on my big arse axe?"
"Sure thing bud, just let me look over the spell pronunciation real quick."
Next.
Quote:
"Oh my goodness.. you scared me. Thought you were another werebeast."
"Nah, just came here to clear some of this mess out. Got a couple other folks with me back there. *motions*"
"Alright then.. guess you guys can handle this. You know of another place me and my group can take care of?"
Or the alternative!
Quote:
"Hey you. Big fiery axe wielding brute.. get off my turf."
"Uh. No. We were here first."
"I don't give a shite. I'm here now and I'm telling you to leave or get bent. *rolls intimidate check*
*subsequent roll pending, first player can either choose to stay and argue/fight it out, or leave*
I would not be upset OOCly if this happened. My toon would be pissed either way.. but isn't that the WHOLE POINT OF ROLEPLAY?! To have interactions that aren't always hunky dorey? To create conflict that is viable RP and that can create further RP the next time you run across this person that is now on your shit list? Whoo effin hoo! We now have something going on that is not just faction based I hate you because you are good/evil/whatever!

I still think we should connect Pirate/Loot together. Make it so the Loot will not go below 1 HP if Pirate is still alive. That way, you must kill them both.
That is a pretty good idea, actually, but is it more/less difficult to script than having 2 quest items dropped by each the pirate and the chest that can be combined together in a plot device thing? (think the eye socket idol thing that requires both eyes to open up the door to the darkness map, for example).
Or what if there was a randomized chance for the pirate and the chest to drop a key, that allows you to open up that locked door (which leads to nowhere, I THINK!) and that when you get one of these keys and open up the door, it teleports you out of the ship and gives you an epic item? ("That key allowed you to proceed further into the ship without destroying the remain of the wreck and perhaps its valuables. On that exploration, you found something of great value..") This would however mean there is a chance for 2 epic items for that boss.. so the drop chance for that key to drop would need to be 2,5% to even this out..
Paladin:

The point I've apparently been taking the very long way around to getting to is that there's generally two types of dungeoneers: 1) the guy (or gal) who uses what I call Justification RP to advance quickly through the levels and uses tricks and game knowledge (NWN and Amia), and sometimes other people, to get there and get all the best gear, and 2) the people who want to run through the dungeons to have fun killing things as a team, get levels, RP along the way until things get busy, and pick up neat items. Based on my observations there's subsets and blendings of people in each of these groups, so it's not like everyone fits into exactly one or the other.
People who have gone out with me would probably notice I try to RP A LOT when I'm out. I take my time, as long as I am not limited on time (happens), or if I am not in a bad mood (happens too). Anyway! Most often than not, I will be taking my time and RP! When I go out to hunt epics, because to me "hunting" is the following:
1) A change of scenery from just rping in town, now I RP in other maps and I get to click on things 2) A fair chance to get a shot at some epic stuff, which I mostly don't -need- at this point
I don't need gold, I don't need mythals, nor do I need exp when I'm maxed.
So when I go out to hunt stuff, and I get to a map where all the creatures have been spawned but none were killed, there is no real IC justifying for my character to just say "Oh no, someone passed by, we have to turn back!" because the items we call "epic" are not supposed to be entitled to a boss that you see every 15 mins. The adventure / challenge / duty / personal interest / beating the crap off evil guys is what drive characters to go out usually.
So when I get there and see they have been spawned, I basically continue on to where we were going, or I have to force find some random reason for my character to convince others that they should go some more obscure place that they were not interested to go in the first place! Because, if I continue and follow with the RP I was set on doing, I am going to have half of my motivation to even go out denied because some selfish rusher just decided to speed the hunt as much as possible on his own. Sometimes you even see all of the creatures that spawned are near a transition zone, so they didn't even bother to go invisible / stealth, they just hasted they way through the map to randomly hit the big guy that drop items, knowing the creatures won't follow them on the other map or will not catch up anyway. At least when thing are killed, I get an easier reason for my character to decide to turn back / change place - very often she goes out to fight evil stuff, so if there are none, she will likely decide to go on another place, happy that these bad guys are being dealt with already.
THAT, to me, even though it is JUSTIFIABLE ICly, still remain a very disrespectful act done by the -player-, not the -character-. It makes sense for the -character- to avoid as many fights as possible and rush for the big guy (if we consider fine the idea that they somehow know that only a certain creature that appears every 15 mins can drop them quality stuff?), but the act is and will always remain cheap, and selfish, and many of the pro "it's fine" arguments I've read on the thread so far really felt like excuses more than anything else.
I still think this should be the one and only rule of thumb -> If you spawn it, kill it.
I get all of this, but at the same time...nothing is perfect. Amia will never be a perfect as you want it to be. Not everyone should be like you because you figure yourself to be the best of the playerbase. The people in this world who often think that everyone has to be like them are the worst kind. Let's instead accept others for who or what they are. There are ways of dealing with things you don't personally like in the game as your character, instead of complaining on the forums. Not trying to be a dick here, really, but I get the vibe that there are a lot of complainers on this server who have fragile emotions, and need everything nerfed because they don't like the combat side of this game and aren't good at it...or whatever. I'll gladly accept this as the demographic for Amia, but I should also have my voice heard, because I'm another player here. My advise is to deal with it, and roll with the punches. Not everyone plays like you.
It's being repeatedly implied here by various posters. People who're less pedantic about their character builds are looking down on those who're more mechanically inclined-- it has become the spirit of this thread. Having a bad build doesn't give you a blanket right to be a dick.

I've played a "Bad build" Evocation focused Sorc before, yes the comments got annoying but eh, you just learn to separate OOC and IC I guess.

I think one of the problems, and I doubt it's effectively fixable, is that Amia isn't fifty times bigger. It's not; it's Amia-sized, you have 432,000XP to get after you finish the ultralowbie quests, and you're doing well to get more than 5,000 from a single dungeon.
That means it's kinda impossible to avoid running the same place multiple times, even you're making a point of spreading it around. The first time your character finds a place, yeah I think you almost have an obligation to have him, her or it make mention of its features, inhabitants, boss and so on. Second time, maybe not so much, or maybe if they've new party mates. Second, third, fourth...twentieth time with the same crowd?
This is I admit a problem thats rest entirely between my right ear and my left, but I really find it silly and forced for the same people to keep talking about a place where they've massacred the inhabitants an hour or a day previously, but said inhabitants are now back to full strength, and with the same political system. "Oh, the Fire Giants have decided to stick with the monarchy for the millionth failed time rather than try an anarcho-syndaclist commune, the foolish tarts. And they keep making them the same belt."
It's a limitation that could only be fixed by having sequential server splits and designers who flat-out dropped out of life and did nothing but build dungeons, unpaid, for years, and those two ideas compete fiercely to be the most unlikely.
And again, it's my problem and self-inflicted too, but the above effect is made worse when I, as a player, have levelised many many characters, so I've seen the initial RP done many many times, and likewise the RP relating to the mechanics of combat, resupplying and resting. It's a little stale, and while it's not admirable that I'm not putting my best work in there, I hope you'll find it understandable.

So....rebuild Amia so all spawns are random? No bosses? What is the solution to this 'problem'?
The way I see it- This is a game with limitations. It's not another reality.
You don't see me complaining that Cordor has no toilet stalls, or that it takes less than a second to change out of my full plate armor. Why? Because it's just a game. To some, it may be a reality, but objectively speaking- it's a game.

Man I don't think this is being implied at all. There are those out there who are great chr builders who aren't dickheads and those that are. I guess there are two sides to this. The ones who strike me as dickheads are the ones who assume that since you are making a suggestion that may go against their style of play which includes 0 RP that you are just jealous cause you can't do what they do. Well guess what I can do what they do, anyone can. Even if you don't know how to make a powerbuild right this very minute, it's not like any trained monkey couldn't do it. So I ask what is there to be jealous of?

Ive actually met some quite honest players who tell me that they don't RP. I'm not saying that these are the players discussed here. Actually even though I think it's strange that they choose to not RP on an RP server, I respect honesty.

I'll speak to that somewhat. I've tried this place out now and again throughout the years. I'm still here this attempt because I found people that actually RP. From my experience, things have improved dramatically in that regard over the last couple of years. I haven't seen one person that hasn't at least somewhat RPed (But then, I stick around RPly zones unless I'm in grindmode). Some are better than others and some were rather bad, but everyone at least makes the attempt.
Also from experience elsewhere, resentment against powerful character builds probably stems from the perception that someone with a powerful build has more say/sway in RP matters than those that do not, because the violent 'punch its face in' option is ever available to the stronger character. Builds up to resentment that leaks across a lot of different topics. But speaking of that, this is a topic for a different thread, if it even needs to be talked on.

Because it's just complaining. Nothing here is constructive. How should Amia change to enforce everyone is here to Role-Play at all times??? Anyone got an answer?

I don't see much complaining in the last posts, which mostly just hold people's own experiences. No need to be alarmist.

As far as I am aware, the topic had nothing to do with enforcing roleplay at all times for everyone. People can rp or they can grind. It is their choice. Things got a bit derailed I think. The problem is those that choose to go after big bosses and leave the rest, and many times perhaps not breaking any rules but exploiting some things. I do agree that if you can sneak by, by all means, do so. It really doesn't take that long for things to despawn/respawn. And if there is a boss that only spawns once per reset... well I guess your toon should have gotten there first?

Which is why most people do not rp much during hunts as they wish to get the bosses before others. It is a race, as most people don't want to be waiting for a new spawn. The rule that you get the hunting area for yourself if you get there first is also one of the reasons, and that you aren't allowed to interfere if someone else is there already.

The Uberness of Uce and the Moshingness of Chris have got this thread by the short'n'curlys. Not to forget Manarethans clear and concise ruling on the initial issue, you can't argue against their logic on the topic because it is fcuking flawless.
Any attempts are sideswipes that don't actually address anything and then quickly slide to a different topic altogether.
You can't beat the logic and sense of Gandalf or Yoda. No one has yet. If anyone can, I'd like to see it.
Ruce, Dead, and Mosh have really pinned down my thoughts.
Idk about other build people but quite often I get ooc messages when im in a party asking for build advice. Of course maybe sometimes I fuck up and ask ooc for certain buffs. Though I quite often try to give advice and ask for buff monkey in character or to go faster.
Like Mosh I'm adaptable, like Ruce I dislike the boring grind. Even full speed grinding I still role play all the meeting and deciding where to go. And I role play during the hunt constantly. Just while killing things its not the best place in danger to discuss philosophy, your characters hopes and dreams, and that sort of thing.

+1 to GreatPigeon with regard to IC vs OOC hunt discussion. I don't get that grumpy when people say stuff OOCly that could equally easily be done IC, but I don't understand it.
Maybe it's that people think it's OOC for a character of any given class mix to know fairly well what another class can do?
Oh, I love to write these comically overwrought analogies...
Picture the scene; it's the steaming jungles of South America, and grizzled Special Forces veteran, Sergeant Nails, is leading his platoon on a supersecret mission to blow up drug factories. An small propeller driven plane flies overhead.
Scenario A: Sergeant Nails throw himself to the floor in supplication screaming "OH MY GOD, WHAT IS THAT THING? I, NOT BEING A PILOT, HAVE LITERALLY NO IDEA WHAT IS COULD BE? IT IS A FLYING CASTLE? IS IT AN ARMOURED DRAGON?! SAVE ME, OH MERCIFUL GOD!"
Scenario B: He glances up, IDs it for what it is, and a split second of checking they're adequately under cover, mutters something darkly about mule planes, and carries on.
In other words: just get your tankly dude to ask out loud for 'concealment' or even 'Improved Invisibility' if you aren't getting one.
This is I admit a problem thats rest entirely between my right ear and my left, but I really find it silly and forced for the same people to keep talking about a place where they've massacred the inhabitants an hour or a day previously, but said inhabitants are now back to full strength, and with the same political system. I couldn't resist, even if the topic drifted somewhere else again. There's actually an IC theory going around stating that the King and Queen of the fire giants are actually common fire giants sentenced to death, equipped with a cardboard crown, a few buffs and occasional loot and given the possibility to go through an ordeal. They survive, they're absolved. They died? Execution done.
"You have been found guilty. Let us throw them in the Pit of Rabid Adventurers, the most ferocious and inclement creatures in the whole islands! The gods will decide."
Or perhaps it's some weird rite of passage. They must spend a whole hour in the spawning chamber covered in precious loot without crying or fleeing to become adults.
To sum it up boss hunting is just as fun as mining iron ore.
... to you.
This is something that bothers me about posts like this. I myself get a lot of enjoyment from boss hunting. It's like winning the lottery when you see the loot dropping message. Even if I get a crappy item, it's fun to just give it away to some newbie! It's exciting! It's always something to do, as opposed to logging in at 3 am finding absolutely no one in any town to RP with out of the 9 people online. Bosses are always open.
I've played the server you want for almost 10 years. It's called Arelith. It's a utopia for boring people who like just standing around, all wearing the same thing. If I wanted to play that, I'd still be playing it. But here's the thing, if you don't like bossing, nobody makes you do it. Nope. No one. You're free to just stand around in town all day and never see a boss in your life. Amazingly enough, you can do this and not ruin other people's fun by removing loot from bosses. Everybody wins.
As to the OP, well, you were planning on killing all the monsters on the way to wherever anyways, right? So if you find monsters, start killing, I guess. By the time you get done, the boss should be there, so... I don't understand what the problem is. Either way, it's the same to your character. (Except the wand thing, which I agree is dickish and needs to be fixed). Someone killing every spawn everywhere just means your butt has to wait that much longer to get what you want done, done after all.

Until your buffs dry up and you all die, to be fair. There's an argument to be made for going at full tilts.
Your buffs are going to go down eventually anyway, and depending on your level/spell planning you'll still be able to rest again and regain them. It all runs on the same clock. Plus, if you spend less time fighting, buffs are less likely to go off unexpected mid-battle. The argument for full-tilt is to get more leveling done in a limited space of time, ie before players have to go do things or their bodies fail them, so on and so forth. I do understand that some people just want to get x amount of grinding done in a session.
-----
Part of the reason I like playing fightery classes is because I can just click the enemy I want to engage with and then freely type combat emotes and casual chatter. The roleplay keeps it fresh for me. Oh, I really do love the casual mid-combat chatter. "So she's sleeping with that guy now? I thought they hated each other. *chop, slice, duck, weave*" "Yeah but now her ex is joining the Banites for revenge or something, it's- *magnificent cleaving sweep!* probably going to get messy."
Some might see it as incongruous but for me it so clearly illustrates how normal life-or-death battle is for the PCs.

The only counter-argument is people who use scrolls/potions, as you're drinking away money that soon wears off. I've noticed people's urge to rush in lowbie levels when they're drinking Misty/Animal potions, as it's a lot of money for them to only kill 3 spawns when they could kill 10+.
That said, I love RPing during hunts, but I think this is moving away from OP's intent of discussion.

Oh that's true - somehow I forgot, despite never playing casters. Probably because I'm no longer functionally capable of hunting without a caster in the party!
