For my fellow metric using Europeans out there, it's not that hard.
1 foot = 1' = 12 inches = 30,48 cm 1 inch = 1" = 2,54 cm
1 yard (though I've never encountered it in Amia) = 3 feet So a 4' 11" person is (Height of Earalenia) = ( 30,48*4 )+ ( 11*2.54 ) = 149.86 cm in height

Robert had his legs broken at several places and stretched, so that once they healed, he would be able to look down at the commons with his seven feet of height. What you go through when you do not have a horse...
I always use my RL height and weight. If it says that im 5/7 and 220 pounds its because i am physically 5/7 and 220 pounds in RL. Much easier then coming up with a random number anyway. 5/7 is neither too tall nor too short... it is just right.

None of my chars are over 6'6, and usually they are around 6'0 or less. Most of the time, I don't even bother with height in their descriptions unless they are supposed to be pretty tall/short >_>
Bitches love shorties.

Tae's 6'6" because I'm 6'6"...so its easier to RP him? And he doesn't go indoors in the Dale aside from the Inn, which I assume would be tallish compared to other places because its an Inn
I did have a ogrillion that was 7'2 and immensely broad shouldered, so I RP'd him having to turn sideways and duck to get through doors. If you play the height appropriately I don't see a problem with it.
That said, my personal cutoff is around the seven foot area. Over that is just plain ridiculous.

Height is a funny thing to RP, but it is easy to forget about it if it is not something primordial or constant in the character. And by constant I mean that it is recurrent to have to RP it.
Height isn't an issue to me. I love though when people are super muscular and are 6'8" and then they only way like 230....

I tend to prefer descriptive words as opposed to hard numbers (Which is weird because I'm a mathematician in the real world), because then you have less issues with proportion. I haven't studied anatomy, I don't know proper weight/height distribution for a healthy human, let alone an elf or a halfling! So I tend towards 'shorter/taller than average, tiny, huge, bulging, gaunt, lithe, ect, ect' in my examines. It's a preference that other people do the same even if they also give hard numbers so I have some idea of proportion, but I'll eyeball it and guess well enough if that's not given.

Personally the ability to properly visualize it is why I greatly enjoy scalable characters in games, although annoyingly enough most games even if they do allow that don't actually tell you the height that is represented by the scale... Annoyingly common and bothersome thing really.

It is possible to do in NWN, thanks to the ability to scale models up or down, although it would need to be done after initial character creation and ideally the base model's height calculated and used to tell you the new character height after it has been increased or decreased by whatever percentage it has been.
Personally I would have the model scaled just after creation (much like subrace stuff now) to the "average" height for the race and then have a NPC only usable once per character that can be used to then adjust that character's size specifically.

Hahahaha, a lot of the 10 footish characters wouldn't be able to use a lot of the dungeons then, they'd get stuck on the doors. Which would be fine by me...and hilarious to watch.

Granted I play females but most of my toons are 'average height'. One in particular is short... though her 'heritage' is still yet undetermined. Though everyone assumes she is half-elf. She is 4'9 (I'm a dumb american and not looking up this metric thingy) and 'petite'. I put the height specifically and other physical characteristics in her bio because I paid DCs to get the elf phenotype to account for her being smaller. I think paying for it allows me the right to choose her height. The end.

Yeah, being vague about the numbers is a better way to go about it. I don't know why I chose to put that in my profile, but I suspect it is because I caved to some pressure at the time for people wanting accurate reflections of the numbers. Dumb. Didn't even take the advice I give my own writers, which is that no one gives a shit about the numbers unless the numbers have some significance. Often, the descriptors have way more significance.
For the record, I cringe every time I read that someone "stands at" a certain height.
Also I like stating some numbers mostly because I am a lazy writer. I mean it's much easier to write 'She's a 6'0 DD Cup with a 38 inch waist' then 'She stands about as tall as the average men, her chest round and perky before narrowing to a slender waist.'
Okay, I lied. I just wanted to write DD Cup.

In keeping with the apparently prevailing viewpoint that a bio is a device for conveying a character's boob data, I've occasionally considered changing my characters' bio pages to being about nothing but their boobs. Just paragraph after paragraph of the most meticulously detailed description of size, shape, symmetry, complexion, firmness, perkiness, nipple topography, underwear preferences, and on and on.
[/sarcasm]
Seriously, boys. Just describe your female characters as "slender" or "curvy" or "toned" or whatever, and leave it at that.

I like the hin version because it's a great target for easy edits of rudeness and intoxication. Here's my Human remix however.

I dunno what the average height of PCs on Amia is.
Andrew is "around five and a half feet" in his bio, which I imagine places him squarely at 5'6. His short height (actually closer to average according to the SRD) is apparently something of a running joke? I haven't given any thought to his weight though I'd guess it's between 160-180. He's heavier rather than agile.
I'll admit, Lyle was titanic, though. Bobrin is much more standard for his race (halfling).

I don't think you guys could possibly get into more detail about boobies than character bios on Sinfar. Cue obligatory eyeroll after going on for more than two lines.
I actually kind of like leaving some parts of the character description vague so that other people can fill in the gaps with their imagination. It's no fun if you go on and on to try and convey a photorealistic image, you're just inducing a yawnfest.
I do not believe there is a point in being pedantic about height unless it's really ridiculous..or someone's description for that matter, unless again, it is ridiculous. I know that the meaning of 'ridiculous' changes between individuals, and make no mistake, I understand the necessity of respecting the lore and needing to make a believable character. It's just the point I'm trying to make is that being overly critical of someone's style of writing/rp/whatever gets in the way of the idea of roleplay(and can wholly defeat the point of roleplay in some places).
There's nothing really wrong with being pedantic, it's a question of taste. Some people just can't help it when certain matters are out of order and provided they're respectful, there's nothing wrong with their voicing their opinions (I will rib the hell out of anyone who I think is being silly, but I'm Australian so this is normal and all in good nature). It can be a bother for immersion but if you're sensitive to that sort of thing a lot of things will bugger immersion and there's little to be done about it given the nature of the server.
So good-natured ribbing it is, you taller-wannabe freaks!

That's because this topic is Brolaf approved.
As for where height is concerned, I've varied my approach between actually making a roll on it or going by something else. As an example, in Arronax's elf-like form he's taller than your average human, but that's because it's supposed to emulate a Shee, which is a fey that's on average, taller than a human.

The reason why it happens is simple. (said in jest)
Its Height creep.
People want to be the hero's (or Anti Hero's) and there's a subconscious part of their brain that equates this with height (as in popular fiction a lot of the hero's and villains are tall and imposing.. though with villains its 50/50) so the first Hero/ villain posts a height that is reasonable but tall.
Next person see's this height and their next heroic/ villainous concept must be taller as they are more of a hero/ villain than the one they saw and so it begins.
Then the next person see's that ones height and the next heroic/ villainous concept they come up with must be taller 'cause they are more heroic/ villainous and so on and so on until we are now getting into the gargantuan heights of utter ridiculousness where breathing is difficult and it snows a lot.

That certainly happens from time to time I'm sure and I know it does in a lot of games (Written RP stuff a lot) although I think on amia it tends to be a more race or class related thing than hero/villain thing. And by that I mean that people often go "I want to show that my barbarian is super tough and barbarian-y I'll make him a giant muscle boulder!" (Although I would enjoy seeming so small tough Wolverine like barbarians.) Or "Orcs (Or Aasimar, etc.) are tend to be large and I want to show that mine is an ADVENTURER!™ of that race and so an especially prime example of the race so I will look at a big height for that race and make it just slightly bigger."
Personally I try to stay away from any extreme height either tall or short unless there is a good RP reason for them to be smaller or larger. The vast majority of my drow have been around 5'0" to 5'2" with the one exception being Zeketh'ryn who was abnormally large but he was supposed to be from a drow bloodline that had a fair amount of demon blood running though it (Draegloths) and was probably about the drow equivalent of a teifling.
