I've been pondering working to organize a faction around theologian, spiritualist and philosopher characters. In practice I imagine it would work very similar to a bard's guild (and to a lesser extent a mage guild) as its members would do research, write books on relevant subjects, hold debates and classes and possibly even go on expeditions to find/recover lost knowledge and artifacts.
However, forming and maintaining any sort of faction would of course require enough interest, so I'd like to ask who has (or would create) a character that would be interested in contributing to such a faction.

This is the ultimate carrot for Iron. Not easy to capture, though; beneath all that bookworm, he's still a maverick spirit. Nonetheless, he ought to scamper here in a sec.

Is this going to be a group of grumpy old men in robes and sporting epic beards complaining at one another all day?
If so, I'm totally in.

I don't know if such a concept needs the framework of a "faction" to support it. Most such characters have their own affiliations and interests already. There are several libraries, churches, schools and mages' guilds that potential members are part of. I imagine it would work more like your typical scholarly network or society works, arranging conferences, reviewing books and articles, perhaps publishing something every now and then (someone had the initiative of a magical journal some years ago), and meeting in pubs to discuss hot topics. Madrik's been holding some lectures recently, and had a decent turnout. Integrate the efforts of individuals into a society of scholars and give speakers and audience an opportunity to network at events, and you'll probably spawn further projects spontaneously.
In summary: publishing house/quarterly journal, a scholarly network where all interested characters can share their professional and contact information, and regular conferences and meetings with some arranged programme (a lecture, a panel, or whatever) and the opportunity to go to a pub and continue the discussion afterwards. That's what works in the real world, that's what would probably work for us.

Guild feels really forced. But the casual symposium here or there would be entertaining. Especially when you acknowledge they aren't purely intellectual gatherings but a social institution for the intellectual or at least privileged members of the island community. And booze.

You're hopeless nerds. The real purpose of this guild is to poke fun at your pseudointellectual approach to someone's attempt of fun, which you totally ruin every single time by being yourselves (read: smartypants).

Quote: A Talking Painting in the corridor further along tells you that humans are being turned into vegetables. And the club winds up with the best vodka on the server, somehow.

That's what works in the real world, that's what would probably work for us. This is actually a very good idea. If there's demand for a more structured organization it could grow from there. On the other hand, I do like the notion of there being more than a little elitist feel to it all. That's what mages organize in guilds for too, after all. Still, it's definitly a nice idea to organize a convention of sorts with different speakers, and see what kind of results it yields.

Rip off the Hall of Speakers in Planescape as a model and base it on philosophy I'd suggest. It's not very useful debating spirituality in a world where one could literally take a stroll through your "end reward" long before your end. Heh.

The content of those debates just tends to be way out there with the afterlife being such a well known tourist location. More data just gives theologians more fuel for their fires.

Unfortunately, this slipped out of my thoughts for a while. But I'd like to reopen it to gauge interest in this.
