If my petition for access to the dwarven Citadel is granted, I will be able to gather the necessary reference sources and tools I need to do an Engineer's duties, I would be happy to assist in building the tower.

I applaud the initiative and I welcome you in my Inn but Harlequin Brandy is still not welcome and while I enjoy a good prank as much as anyone else the next one to lob a poison bomb or something similar in my Inn will join Brandy in being banned from the Hin Inn untill suitable amends are made.

*A big heart is drawn around Fendel's name in pink ink. Bellow his reply, Jules only leaves a part of another minstrel's poem.*

To you she gave her laughter and her jest,
Her words that of all words were merriest,
Her glad, mad moments when the lights flared high
And her wild song outshrilled the plaudits' din.
Oh, how we should all love the harlequins!

Max could be seen tacking up his open letter to the people of Bendir Dale at the Town Hall*
Quote:

To the Citizens of Bendir Dale,

I am speaking as a concerned citizen, not as the militia. Please understand that as you read this note.

It has been brought up that a new citizen of our town wishes to build a Mage Guild within our community. He feels this will add to the security of our town.

I oppose this notion. I can't stress how strongly I oppose this idea. The thought of mages experimenting with who knows what only feet from where our children play scares me to death. There have been too many incidents of mistakes, normally when this happens, things blow up and people die.

Why would we WANT to introduce this inside our little town? I say this is simply begging for disaster.

Mister Mayor, please don't approve this.

Citizens of Bendir Dale, please, express to the Mayor and the Council your feelings on this before it's too late.

Thank you,

~Max~

*A response is put up a short while later*

Quote:
In Response to Mr. Maximillian's Concerns.

Introduction
I wish to state I understand his concerns about the Dale's safety, especially following the disaster at the Gnomish Test Site.

I wish to make something clear, I was born and raised amongst the Gnomes of the Test Site, I was off the island at the time, and was not present for the disaster. At the same time, I have lost almost everyone I have known in my entire life.

I sold everything I had on me to pay not only for the passage to Cordor, but the passage I had taken from the Test Site to the other islands in gathering supplies for my eventual return, to be paid upon that return. I was left with nothing. If it was not for the intervention of Ms. Vindle, I would still be begging and tinkering for scraps of food in Cordor's slums. This place is my home now, and I would see that nothing harms it.

The Dale stands at the heart of Amia, is the chief source of food and produce in the Isles. It is also very lightly defended. Despite having farm lands beyond it's own walls, the milita is incapable due to a lack of manpower and equipment, to defend the Dale beyond it's own walls. Villains, especially those with magical talent, take advantage of this, terrorizing the residents of Bendir Dale should they even think to step outside.

This state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue.

This was part of the inspiration behind my wish to establish the Magewright's Guild in Bendir Dale. There are other reasons, which I will get to, but first let us look at security.

Firstly, by encouraging law-abiding mages to congregate in the Dale, you bring together a body of people with a vested interest in the community beyond just being that place where they pass through on their way to Kampo's from Cordor. You create a place where they will WISH to obey the laws because they will need to if they want to gain access to the resources of a guild based around them.

With this vested interest, they would not only be less likely to work against the interests of the Dale, but to actually work with the authorities to defend the dale! They will help hunt down rogue mages and other villains who threaten the dale since they will want to maintain a good reputation of the Guild within the Dale itself.

Further, we will be able to produce wards, magical weapons and armor, golems, and other magical items for the exclusive use of the Bendir Dale Militia. We will do this in return for the material necessary for construction and for the land to build a headquarters within the Dale itself. To others we would likely charge extra comission prices above and beyond the cost of materials, giving the Dale an advantage against any would be aggressors.

As a show of good faith, I am working on building 5 golems, and a watch tower, for the Militia. These will be given to the Militia free of charge, and without any guild control on them. As golems are incredibly resistant to magical interference, and utterly loyal to the person or group they are assigned to, this effectively gives the Dale the ability to eject the guild should it ever feel we have outstayed our welcome, regardless of our own cooperation.

What is the Magewright's Guild?
Now, none of this answers exactly what the Magewright's Guild intends to be. I wish to found an apolitical organization, without ties to any of the major city states or governments. We would answer to the Dale government as a private company operating within the Dale's sovereign territory, not as an extension of the Bendir Dale government, as the Seven Star Academy has become for Kohligen, or the university in Tarkuul has always been.

Any law abiding practitioner of the magical (wizardry, sorcery, druidry, divine arts, etc.) and semimagical arts (alchemy, invention, engineering, arcanistry, etc) would be permitted to join the guild, provided they were not already banned from the Dale. Their home, race, and political stance would be of no regard to the guild, though religion would be a factor. That said, if these things are of concern to the Dale, it would be within the power of the Dale to restrict access to the guild by such persons.

The Guild would be a clearing house for magic activities. Closer to a Trade Guild than a university. A place of business as much as learning and research. Members would be given access to the resources needed to easily find masters, or apprentices, goods to do their research with, and jobs that suited their talents. For those seeking magical assistance, they could apply to the guild and the guild would find a suitable member capable of doing the job asked of us. Finally, we would ethically but proactively seek out magical and semi-magical knowledge. Unbound by the strictness of Kohligen's academy, but at the same time more observant of ethics and law than Tarkuul.

To ensure this, a member of the "Partners" who would collectively run the guild would always include a dale resident assigned by the Dale Council, but not directly involved in Dale politics, to ensure that oversight was maintained and ethics as the Dale saw them observed. The last thing we want is another Test Site disaster, which occured thanks to the lack of oversight, with all decision making power in the hands of a single head researcher. The Partners of the Guild would be a check and balance between unbridled research, and staunch, stagnant, conservatism.

Finally, all research records conducted by the Magewright's Guild would be made public, though exact results and methods might be withheld from nonguild members to maintain our trade secrets (Though as the Dale would have a representative within the guild, this could not be abused). Further, dangerous tests and study samples would not be permitted within the gates of the Dale proper, but instead secured elsewhere in a nearby location where the only ones who could potentially be hurt are monsters and malcontents that were enemies of the Dale.

The only thing located in Bendir Dale would be the centralized hub of the Magewright's guild. Labs to conduct benign research, records keeping, and manufacturing areas within the mage's tower.

Why Bendir Dale?
The Magewright's Guild intends to be an apolitical, neutral, but law abiding trade guild focusing on magical practitioners of all sorts. Many mages do not want to be tied to the institutions of Kohligen or Tarkuul, seeking their own path outside of the bickering city states. Bendir Dale is a pool of sanity and peace on the island, with little to no interest in affairs outside the Dale provided they do not impact the Dale itself.

Further, unlike Kampo's Trade Post, another potential location to establish the guild, the Dale does have a policy of progress and abiding by the law. Order. A place of safety to conduct research and academic/trade discussion. The list of those banished from the town, or who are to be killed on sight, are exactly the type who I would like to keep out of the Guild, those who will abuse the resources given to them and stab the guild in the back. If we were based in Kampo's or another location, it would be more difficult to filter our membership of those who seek to abuse what we have to offer.

It should also be noted that Bendir Dale is the beating heart of trade on Amia in many ways. All roads lead to the dale, and all trade passes through here at one point or another. It is a central location, and the perfect place for a trade guild to be established if it wished to have equal access to almost every location in the Isles. Especially with the upcoming expansion of the Dale's influence to Bendir Bay, which will open up the rest of the isles to the Dale itself for trade.

Finally, there is a personal reason. Regardless of whether or not the Magewright's Guild is established in the Dale. I will see it founded. I will find a place to build it and a place for free mages to congregate safely to practice and share their arts regardless of political affiliation. Where ever we go, that place will profit from the existence of the guild, and I would see that it is my new home here in the Dale. I have lost my former family, and I would share my gifts with my new family.

Conclusion
Thus, in return for allowing the Magewright's Guild to base itself out of the dale, the current location as determined between myself and Mayor Nof as the top of the hill across the river from the town hall, the Magewright's guild would bring security, wealth, knowledge, and trade to the Dale, improving the lots of life for everyone within the Dale and further securing it from outside threats. It would help the Dale take the necessary steps to avoid being bullied by outside powers. Are there risks? Yes. But the founding of the guild in Bendir Dale gives the residents of the Dale all the tools they need to counter act those risks while reaping the rewards of the Guild.

The Gnome has already been told that he's to log all experiments publicly with prior warning for safety, and conduct them outside the Dale away from anything flammable. Anything he produces within the Dale itself will have to already have proven safe in off-site experimentation. If he doesn't, he's out.

Furthermore; it's my understanding that anything he actually makes to "bolster our manpower" will be using plans and methods taught to him by the artificers of Barak Runedar, and the Church of Gond (particularly one Techsmith Captor) who spoke to me of taking Jamian Turin under their apprenticeship. If you don't trust Barak Runedar's engineering, their methods, or their teaching, then feel free to protest the new weapons the militia has. Or really any other manufactured good that comes from that Dwarf Hold.

We aren't dumb, Max. If the thought of a mage experimenting with who knows what (everyone will know exactly what because he'll have to log experiments publicly before the fact) feet from where our children play (outside the town, where our children don't play because the trolls would eat them) is a problem, remember the dogma of Brandobaris says 'risk-taking brings life's greatest rewards'.

You're far too young to be harrumphing over other folks' kids. But if you want extra assurances I'll talk with Turin about extra safety measures and get him to make a more public statement about it.

In all honesty, this letter he wrote here explains things a bit differently than he did in person.

Much of what he says makes more sense, and in hindsight, seeing my original letter and then his, yep, makes me look like a bit of a fool. However, he did not disclose all of this in person, and he certainly never mentioned all experiments would be approved prior. By this, I am not accusing him of anything, simply I acted on the information that was offered and given.

This changes things and makes it much, much less of a threat.

However, one thing still makes me nervous. He said something about experimentation on "donated" corpses. I'm not quite comfortable with Necromancy being taught in this thing. I know Necromancy as a school of magic encompasses many things, but, animating dead bodies is not something I'm comfortable being taught or experimented with.

I owe you an apology in person for not being so clear then.

But I'm glad we got this out of the way, it's a hurdle the organization would have had to over come in any case.

As for donated corpses for necromantic studies. It involves far more than simply animating a corpse. The study of necromancy covers 3 basic principles. The Soul, Postive, and Negative Energy. It's why Necromancers are, in many ways, a poor-man's cleric when it comes to raising bodies and controlling the undead. All of those domains are the stuff by which life and death function on our world, and are mostly the domain of the gods. The use of donated bodies for dissection and experimentation would allow us to use necromantic manipulation of energies to try and simulate cleric abilities, along with other uses. The undead, in their natural state, are in many ways another kind of elemental if their soul hasn't been brought back. Just as a Fire Elemental simply wishes to burn, and acts as fire would if it had more will behind it, your average skeleton, assuming it's not the vengeful soul risen from the grave for revenge type of undead, acts under the motivations of Negative Energy. It wishes to come into contact with life and 'zero out' it's emptiness, often with catastrophic effect if left untamed, but the same could be said for any type of elemental.

Further they would allow us to experiment with positive energy based undead, similar to how the Elves on the mainland do. Baelnorns are undead who have KEPT their senses. Further there are other examples of undead who keep their senses.

I will never condone any form of magic that solely exists to harm others. I am not even in favor of battle magic for that reason, nor spells such as cloud kill or phantasmal killer. I use it for it's purpose and then not at all.

Magic is a tool. A powerful tool. An incredible tool. And there are many views on how to use magic and what it's purpose in life is. But the simple fact remains that no school of magic is inherently evil, and as long as we are not putting others in danger and we are not stealing from anyone living or dead, then I do not see what is being done that is wrong.

Nor is there anything natural about living objects, elementals, celestials, infernals, or any other number of creatures who exist on our layer of the prime material plane that originate or draw their power from the inner and outer planes.

That doesn't stop them from existing nor from needing to be studied, not just for the potential benefits study of them could bring about, but for methods to counter act the harm they can do.

Suffice to say however, the Dale WILL have some measure of oversight on any experiments we preform. They will have the ability to shut down any experiments being run on their lands that they disagree with.

Personally as long as they follow the dale's laws, study is fine in my opinion. After all how is one suppose to defend against something with no idea on how it works? 'life' & 'death' magics both run off the manipulation of necomantic and positive energy, All healing spells run off the exact same ideals as does resurrection. The only difference is instead of bringing back a person alive, you are binding the soul to the still dead corpse and giving it energy to draw from to stay 'alive'. I myself specialize in anti undead spells and attack spells.

Perhaps capture would be better, rather then creation however? Or at least in a very fortified room with warding spells from the local clerics.

I could agree with capture, but a great deal of counter-spelling technique requires understanding the fundamental working and underpinnings of a spell. There's only so far you can go in theory and in studying the results of a spell before you need to see the spell actually being worked.

I agree on the safety measures however. I'd use the same ones for any form of binding on outsiders.

PS. I'm sure decent burials can be arranged on the Guild's tab for the bodies of the deceased once the experiments are finished.

All of those things are indeed natural, they are just not native to this plane. Undead are not natural on any plane. This sort of study should not be done in, or anywhere near, Bendir Dale. Take it to Tarkuul.

Very true, that is why forsaking a school of magic is generally only hindering yourself. You need to learn something to protect from it. However actual usage is different.

Crow, we understand your hatred of all undead things being a follower of the 'natural' gods and all. But how are you going to kill undead without understanding them? Even a cleric knows much about undead and each type before going to the field, or else you just die quickly and end up as one of them.

If you cannot agree to such a thing, Fine. But I offer my services, Jamian, If you need anything just ask and i'll see what I can do.

~Mirnia

*quickly tacked to the other notice*

Oh yes.. And I'l have you know, awakening an animal is not natural either, same with a druid's immunity to every poison in existence. Even the 'natural' is unnatural sometimes.

*Along the growing list of tacked notes*

And elementals are not natural. I'm sorry, they're an invasive species at best. They do not form naturally on this plane. There are also multiple other creatures, including entire races such as the gensai, who are examples of what happens when planar energies mix with the prime material plane. Undeath is just an example of the positive or negative energy planes impinging upon this world.

And several kinds of Undead, such as Ghosts and certain other spirits, are entirely natural and merely belong to different parts of this plane. The Ethereal Plane for example, like the Shadow Plane, are so incredibly close to the Prime Material to effectively be simply different layers depending on how you split the hairs. Ghosts are undead, and yet they are native to another layer of our own plane, and thus natural.

Natural merely means that it belongs on our plane of existence and came about by natural causes, not by extraplanar interference.

*a response to Mirnia*

Learn to understand what you read. I think this study has no place in, or near, Bendir Dale. I even gave a suggestion as to where it should be done. I have seen only one Awakened animal, and I think I agree with you, after seeing it. No Grove members have Awakened animals. As far as the druids are concerned, they are more in tune with nature than anyone, their immunities would certainly be considered natural. Roim was banned from Bendir Dale for his studies, this is no different, and has no place in this village.

*and to Jamian's note*

The elements are natural on this plane, and the species that originate from the elements are natural to their plane of existence. They are alive and sentient. Undeath is not alive, nor is it natural anywhere. I will bring this up at the next town meeting, and let the town decide on this farce of belief.

I have to disagree with the sentience statement about elementals. The most powerful are intelligent, but the vast majority are about as intelligent as a beast of burden. It's why it is fine to use them to create golems, since they are not sapient, and possessing no true free will.

That said. I would not bring any form of direct and practical necromantic research within the borders of the dale. It would be conducted, like all dangerous research, in places where if something went wrong the only beings that would come to harm would be those who are a direct threat to progress and profitable advancement of society, such as in the Mylock Hills.

I'm willing to discuss this at the next town meeting, as well as other issues including where to build the tower exactly, whether it should be in side the walls or outside of them. Recent events have convinced me that for peace of mind of those within the Dale, it might simply be better to construct the tower outside of the walls of the Dale, but still within the Jurisdiction of Bendir Dale's council. I will table my end of the discussion until the meeting.

Jamian,

After a long second lunch with Maxie today, a lot of thinking, and a lot of weighing options, I want to make a statement.....

If you make Citizenship in Bendir Dale a requirement to join your guild, I will not only change my stance of opposition. I would take you up on your offer to join and be a contributing member.

The crux of the issue to me has been attracting more mages to our town. You say they would be loyal defenders in support of our town. Making citizenship a requirement at least to me confirms they have some loyalty to Bendir Dale. In addition, the guild would be a part of our community rather than an intusion.

Unfortunately, that is the one concession I can't offer. The entire point of the mage's guild is to offer ALL mages to peacefully assemble and share knowledge and profit with one another, regardless of political or racial stance. Only a mage's actions should matter. As the Dale's citizenry is made up entirely of us shorter races, it would undermine the guild's intended purpose, making it far more exclusive than I would wish.

Just remember that everyone that belongs to the banned to enter inside the walls will not be able to enter your mage guild if it resides within the walls.

And if I see any mage summoning undead or studying rituals to awaken chromatic blood they -WILL- have a talk with Susy.

As much as I disagree with the stigma of necromancy being exclusively bad especially with being brought up with tales of the valor of Baelnorns I would agree with Crow, this is better discussed in person, not on a notice board. Perhaps it would be best to arrange a talk by Jamian on the subject, or to bring the issue at the next town hall meeting. Little good tends to happen based off of these notice board discussion if anyone's seen the state of Winya's board at times, they would know.

Anyone summoning or creating undead within the Dale's land violates the laws. I don't know a lot about undead but I know enough of them to not want them anywhere near the Dale.

Will be haunting the Dale tomorrow (wednesday the 11 th) from 19.00 gmt/ 20.00 cet and onwards (depending on how many hin are around - watching an empty Dale is boring)

This is a good time to meet Nof for those that requested a meeting, first come - first served!

I just want to be clear about something.

There seems to be confusion as to whether this would be conducted within the dale.

That is not, and has never been, the intention. Any form of presence of the undead is a threat that is too large to be permitted anywhere near a heavily populated area, just as summoning more powerful elementals, or testing new combat spells would be.

If any such research were to be conducted, at all, it would be far outside the borders of the Dale. But given the vehemence of opinion against it, and given the role of the Dale as the hosts of the guild, I will likely be dropping any practical research in favor of theoretical and field research into the nature of undeath and how to counteract it.

Jamien. I'd like to remind you that summoners of the dead are banned from the Dale. Regardless of whether or not you summoned it on our land, if you're a waker of the dead, you will be banned.

I do hope this is not the case. But if you're lying and you do, the consequence will be far worse.

Dear Theadric Shortwick.

I think we're having a miscommunication here. Is there a time I can meet with you and we can discuss this? I will be the first to admit that my social skills, both in writing and in person are not at their best, but perhaps I can convince you of my good intentions, and as I have just stated, my abandonment of my previous position of practical research into undeath spells so as to better figure out counters to them.

I would be greatful of a meeting, master Gnome.

I'm usually found outside the gates, or you can tell Rosary Doodlekins to come get me.

Date and time is decided upon.

We will meet outside the main gates of Bendir Dale after the town meeting this saturday. We expect the run time to be somewhere around two hours. If we're not done in the meeting, I urge you all to be patient. See you there.

-Vigilant Sentinel Theadric Shortwick.

After that brave Theadric will fearlessly be mauled stride forwards to vanguish river trolls. All Dale residents (and invited allies) are welcome to place bets how long he lasts to accompany him.

Trade update!

Now that we got a better idea of people's wants and needs, we're just evenly dividing the crops and their outputs to equally supply everyone (Mayor's orders) who's requesting army feed. It's looking like a half of it will be going to Kohlingen, Barak Runedar, and the other Treaty States, and the other half to the different Cordors (I think...)

I got news from the Eilistraeen Shrine that their blight is over! Best wishes for their future endeavors from the Treasurer's office, but they don't need us to keep supplying them anymore. More food for the good folk defending this isle!

Of course we're now out of the silk deal, but they mentioned they'd need help buying up seed, fertiliser and other such farm stocks from us for hard coin. I'll need to go talk to them about it!

We were approached by someone from Winya Ravana who said he wanted someone to help 'feed his kin', and I said I'd be right with him once I was done talking with the people I was talking to, but he got tired and left in a couple of minutes. I'll be sending a missive to the elven enclave to see what that's about.

Now that all the farmland on the island is up and running again, I'll be putting forward plans for the agricultural summit soon to coordinate crops island wide to put us all on a proper war footing!

Tacked up hastily under the last message:

Oh yes! Before I forget. I spoke with the Eternal Order, and they mentioned they may be able to help us consecrate/hallow Bendir Bay against the undead pirates there in exchange for... Some stuff they might need (I don't know what the Eternal Order might need).

Such help from a dedicated bunch of dead hunters could make clearing up the second problem with the sea trade plan easier, letting us claim a bit more farm land out there and a little port of our own.

~Jannah.

*These documents are publically available to anyone who asks after them who is citizen of Bendir Dale (or a region controlled by Bendir), or a member of the Magewright's Guild.

They are located in the Bendir Town Hall for the moment, but a copy will eventually be located in the Magewright's Guild Hall.

Each document has a detailed series of notes about the sample, a detailed drawing of the sample if possible, and Jamian Turin's signature. Experimental notes follow a similar procedure.*

First Set of Samples:
Readings from Primitive Kobold Based Gating Spell
*On top is a detailed map to the standing stones that act as the 'reciever' for the gating spell, as well as a sketch of those standing stones from a variety of angles*
~Observations: The Kobolds who originally built the now goblin infested cavern complex did not have the resources nor spell know how to build a traditional gating spell.
~Conclusions: The Kobolds must have invented a much cheaper, if shorter range, gating spell. Even if it was one way and relatively short range, the ability to replicate such a spell would have enormous utility in our day and age.
*This is followed by a great deal of observational records from several people who used the gate as well as readings taken from observational warding glyphs left on the stones*
Image----Image

Second Set of Samples:
Negative Energy Crystal Samples. Taken from the Negative Energy Plane
*At the top is a pair of sketches of two crystalline bodies, both pitch black, one appears to be emmitting light though. A sketch of a thumb is shown beside them for scale*
~Observations: Two sets of crystaline samples taken. One from a normal negative energy crystal structure. Appears to absorb all light, direct contact with living matter causes near instant mortification and disintegration. The second sample shows unusual signs of energy emission, giving off a hard white glow of light despite the crystal itself remaining pitch black. Contact with living matter creates the same results, but there is a brief increase in the light emission under such circumstances.
~Conclusions: No conclusions drawn. It should be impossible for the crystals to emit light at all, since anything from the negative energy plane is an endless pull or hunger for energy. Light is included in this. Nothing should be emitted from the crystal sample, let alone when it is in the process of absorbing living energies.
*There are some notes on containment procedures for the crystalline shards and precise measurements of weight, mass, volume, and dimensions involved for each of the samples, as well as detailed information on how the samples were taken. It involves glass and metal instruments, and thick gloves made from materials that were never living*

Image-----Image

Third Set of Samples:
Healing/Regenerative Boosting Spring Waters from Bendir Bay
*Pictured is a set of 10 lead stoppered vials with a clear fluid inside of them. A hand is shown grasping one of them to give a sense of scale*
~Observations: Samples taken from a sweet water spring in Bendir Bay. River Trolls exposed to the water showed abnormal size and regenerative abilities, recovering from repeated wounds in an extraordinarily short period of time from wounds that would normally have been fatal. No need to replenish energy or biomass from eating was observed.
~Conclusions: The water was the only abnormal factor. When bodies were removed from it, and when the water was tainted, the regenerative effects were not observed. When the water was no longer contaminated, the effects were observed once more. The water could very well be a natural form of healing potion, though potentially only effecting those with abnormal regenerative abilities in the first place. Further testing and observation is required.
*There are detailed notes and references to the existence of other healing springs, as well as references to varied studies on the regenerative abiliites of trolls, with a focus on river trolls in particular in the studies cited. Also contains notes on the storage medium, and how to prevent lead contamination and the reasoning behind using the lead stoppers to prevent magical contamination through the top. The glass of the vials has already been spelled to reflect magical energies away from the contents in order to prevent contamination by arcane or divine energies.*

Hello!

There are several interested residents with regards to being ambassador for our fair town. Therefore, and seeing the war makes this post vital, I decided to split up the post and assign people per region. So far we have the following ambassadors.

Pebs: Kohlingen and Barak.
Pil: Winya
Lili: Wiltun, Cordor South/ East
Kerim: West Coast (Wharftown, Delta)

The list will be updated soon as more interested people have not yet been assigned a region or regions.

-Nof
