Hello everyone, I'm new around here. I've been playing on this particular server for about 2 weeks now. Before Amia I played pen and paper D&D, was involved in designing and DM'ing 2 other NWN's servers and recognized on a server of 1000's for my roleplaying abilities. I don't say this to toot my own horn, but to point out this isn't my first gig.
So as a new player here, I'm a little confused. Is roleplaying held in such a manner that it trumps most everything? And by that I mean, as a new player, I can't honestly be expected to know every storyline, rule, deity system, job system, guild, group, bad guys and good guys are. Sure, there's a lot of information on the website and I've been reading when I can, but to be expected to know every tidbit is unrealistic. So when a mistake is made, time isn't taken to explain anything, there's no "cutting some slack" to the new kid.
I bring this up because as a new player, my experience here has been really crappy thus far. There's a feeling of the 'good ol' boys' club here and that its impossible to break into. Each DM event I've been involved in, and by involved I mean, the only thing I could do was stand around and ask a bunch of questions that nobody felt needed answering, if you aren't one of the max level been here for years players, you don't count.
What torqued me off the most though, was tonight's little experience. My character brought a wright into the outskirts of Binder Dale, there was maybe a half dozen people hanging around, roleplaying. Now the reason my character did this, is because she thinks its her brother Steve. And as a player I thought this would be a Hilarious way to introduce myself and break the ice while they explained to her why it couldn't be her dead brother Steve. It didn't turn out that way, in the span of 30 seconds Steve was attacked and killed, then my character was attacked by one person and after she auto-attacked that character, a different person jumped in and killed her. I watched her laying there on the ground, wondering what in the hell just happened, if I'll even be raised or just left there.
I was raised, and after a very brief rp exchange, I had to log off, I was angry and I wanted to make sure it wasn't my anger that came through my roleplaying. So I came back, rp'ed with one of the characters that attacked mine. Basically I'm not allowed in or around Binder Dale anymore.
I guess this is turning into more of a rant than anything and I apologize, that wasn't my intention. What I wanted to do was bring light to a very frustrating situation that needn't be. I want to like this server, its pretty and seems interesting. But the Players aren't letting that happen! There was such a better way of handling tonight's "incident" through roleplay than what happened.
So, I went into the situation wanting to meet other players and characters, and instead am now hated by them. Just disheartening is all.

Hello and welcome to the server! To adress some of your points, yes there is a steep learning curve to the daily life and plots involving the server and no one should expect you to know everything If your PC just arrived by a boat there is a good measure of being unknowing of what is going on. As for getting into plots on various places my advice is to start small and just go about daily casual RP. DM held events are usually a continuing thing so getting may be difficult at first. This is something that has been adressed many times in different topics on the forums so if you are like myself (a lurker) you will stumble upon it OOCly I can tell you Bendir Dale is a "hotspot" in terms of PCs travelling there and conflict can arise. The good Hins of the Dale have made a point not to accept undead (and generally summoning undead is not good for your health) or other monstrous things messing with their area so sadly it seems you got the blunt of the pent up frustration from what other PCs have done in the past. That being said there are clear rules for PVP and I suggest you make yourself familiar with them. http://www.amiaworld.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=55956&p=918579#p918579I can not comment on the whole being jumped and slain thing as I hope the involved parties played it by the books. Disputes such as these should most often be adressed directly to a DM if you feel you have been wrongly treated. Now you did not name anyone in your post which is thumbs up from me and you calmly explained the situation so I would think your PC has some trust earning to do. Redemption is possible if you work for it

By the books, aka PvP rules, you should not have been outright attacked and therefore killed. One should always be given a chance to retreat, back down, i.e. not forced into fighting if you don't want.
What should have been done is that the PCs there should have told you that undead were not allowed and either to go away, remove it, or remove it and go away. Unfortunately some people who play good aligned PCs feel it is their god given right to just kill any undead.
I could possibly see them killing the undead and then turning to you and saying get the hell out. But clearly some lines were crossed here. It may all because of the way the game handles the attack routine. At least as far as your description goes, that seems to be possible.
But you should have been confronted, though, NOT attacked.
I am sorry that your brief stay here has not been all that positive. I find your experience to be the exception not the norm when it comes to the RP here. We have excellent players. Hopefully you will forgive our transgressions and decide to stay and learn about this world a little bit longer. It does offer unlimited opportunities for fun.
I do have to admit that you are correct though about the DM events. They are ongoing campaigns, some of them lasting here for years (I kid you not). They do tend to involve the max levels toons and are definitely geared towards them. If you are a low level chap, asking questions is about all you can do.
There have been recent discussions concerning these lengthy campaigns, but that is a thread in itself. Needless to say I concur with you that they detract from the RP here, not enhance it.
I truly hope you give us some more time and become more immersed in the world. We really do have quite of lot bright, brilliant and caring (and yes, I'll say it.....wacky!) people on this site.

Try not to assume Baden, you weren't there. I won't drag out a long explanation of the event, but I'm sorry if you felt disrespected OOC, Shin. There was indeed role-play, before and after the situation, but things did escalate rather quickly, and for that, I'm sorry you didn't get more of a chance. There was a DM present in-character, if that makes you feel any better. And, your character is allowed 'through' Bendir lands, just not inside the gates. Honestly, I thought you were an older player, that knows Crow, and was just giving him the same hard time all the other antagonists give him, lol. He has heard those excuses before

So long story short. A decorated RPer comes with an undead summon (no matter if it's brother Steve or uncle Bob, it's still an undead abomination) to a place where it is very clearly and very strictly prohibited to bring any form of undead (for further details see Bendir's Dale basic laws) is sad and angry for having had to accept the consequences for IC happenings and is "musing" about it on OOC forum. A word of advice - if you want to make friends by having an undead by your side, pick a different place to meet people. Not a place where having an undead summon is basically "a-faster-than-lighting" reputation ruiner, which is very clearly said on both forum and on IG "Law board" by the town of Bendir gates. There are such places on Amia where undead minions will bring you fame and friends and you'll have to find them yourself (I for one am not sharing IC infromation OOCly) And second, specific matters and happenings are not a subject for public forum. If in doubts, poke a DM via. private message.

Reason I give Shin this OOC information is: Quote: "cutting some slack" to the new kid. I guarantee most people who know of Tarkuul but never made a PC that would suit the area but then made a PC that would, would instantly know where it is and how to get to it. Don't forgo someone who is having issues information just because you feel that everything needs to be gained ICly, where it is due to IC that this situation has happened without anyone giving an extended hand to help a newbie. This is one of the reasons I worry for Amia's future.

I have no problem, on contrary, I will gladly help anyone who is new to the game and to the game settings. I think a player with shinning resumé like this : Shin wrote: Before Amia I played pen and paper D&D, was involved in designing and DM'ing 2 other NWN's servers and recognized on a server of 1000's for my roleplaying abilities. ... needs no help in IC world. Morelike a help with understanding how the server and the community works, because every server have a unique community and different rules. But it's still the same settings and it's still the same Nwn.

It hardly is too much to ask to cut a new player some slack, and help them get settled in into the community. If I had not been given the same courteousy when I started here, I would have been washed out after the first week.
With that being said, welcome to Amia. Poke me in game (login is 'Phearnun') or toss me a pm if you got any questions, or I can help you with something. I was the guy who played a celestial blooded lothite sorcerer, just to give you an idea why I am thankful I was not hit with the wrath of those I played with, but had them help me out.

Same as what Pony said above me, I wish I was given some more slack when I first started on this server, I've had to learn the hard way where to go and what to do on this server. In fact my character has been more or less forced to discover all the places to go levelling by himself from level 2 to level 23 or so before anyone in range or willing to help me were could be established.
Welcome aboard friend, I hope you are met with better reception than I was. If you need any help feel free to contact me in game or over PM on these forums here.

I've had this happen on numerous occasions: people engaging me in pvp while I was busy typing a response to their role-play, and I don't think I'm special. I think this happens to other people, too. I also don't think I'm special that I feel annoyed that I didn't get a chance to have my character respond to other players role-play. I think that's normal, and I think this happens to other people, too. This new player to the server appears not to be special, just like me. He's just another player that happened along that got annoyed by knee-jerk role-play, and will probably leave like all the others that don't feel like putting up with it.
I guess I could start reporting it... but why? It would just get lost in the stack of complaints that old players are filling GM's mailbox with, such as "Mommy DM: please hurt Bobby. He won't let me manipulate his role-play with OOC comments anymore."
I have found one way to deal with this kind of behavior that has helped me:
If you don't have time to type a response to someone's role-play before you are killed, then they obviously don't want to role-play with you. Feel free to ignore people that don't want to role-play with you.

You could try talking to them, conversely. Explain to them you are a slow typer or what have you. Near everyone will be considerate if you do so and give you the time, I believe.

Correct. Most OOC disuputes follow from one of these three things: #1 Miscommunication #2 People not being telepathic or mind-readers #3 Sense of entitlement

I am sorry for the way it sounds like the PvP was played out, but be warned that on Amia right now there's a lot of goodies about in the open, and undead in general aren't very popular so chances is summoning them is a bad idea, even in PvE.

Know your leaders, Academy of Tarkuul, The Living Guard and Tarkuul's Nightly News are as public and available as they can get. Anyone walking through Kampo's could notice the posters since they are being updated on a regular basis. It's just the matter of a new player not knowing where to find those threads on the forum, or overseeing them. IC and IG they are as plain as day.
