There seems to be some confusion going around about death, dying, and capture especially among new players. Here's a couple of really cool consequences for dying that are not rules.
---- Fun IC consequence for dying #1: You have no recollection of the 30 minutes leading up to your death.
This is a really cool idea! But it's not a rule... Please don't kill someone then send them a tell saying, "Your character doesn't remember who killed them." It's just kind of rude, and it is confusing if it is a new player. If the player whose character dies decides they want to role-play that way, that is awesome, and adds a sense of "realism" to the fantasy setting. If a player choses not to role-play this way, I'd like to encourage other players not to try to "pressure them" into role-playing this way. There are also certain characters that will always remember how they died, and it wouldn't make sense for them to forget. There are also constructible circumstances that would make it impossible for this to happen using certain spells.
---- Fun IC consequence for dying #2: Permanent death.
This is freakin awesome, and is a cool element of role-play that should add to a character's story. Lately I've noticed some players killing other players in pvp, and they will role-play burning the corpse, or perform some other mutilation, and tell the player OOC "Your character is permanently dead." This is so ridiculously rude it's not even funny. Please don't do this to players. Players control their characters. Period. The ONLY way a character can permanently die without the player's consent is by ruling of the DM team. And quite frankly, I've never witnessed this happening. Basically, if you don't want your character to be permanently dead, they are not permanently dead. There are also ways to avoid permanent death by using certain constructible circumstances that would make permadeath impossible, except for death by old age... and even THAT is avoidable... I guess my point is, if you still want to role-play a character that died, go ahead and respawn and go role-play! WOOT!
---- Fun IC consequence for capture #1: You are detained for more than 24 hours.
This is great, especially when role-playing a known criminal, or being involved in a lengthy interrogation, but there is no rule saying you must cooperate with being detained for more than 24 hours. If you don't want your character to be detained, and no one is role-playing detaining you, then guess what, you're free to go, unless you want to continue role-playing being detained. I've heard of people being thrown into a dungeon and locked up, and left there. If that is all the role-play you're given, and there is no DM involved in your character's detention, then you can log your character on tomorrow and go do whatever you want. Please don't tell players they can't role-play a free character. It's just rude. People are in control of their characters on Amia. There's a reason why receiving a DC looks like having the "Freedom" spell being cast on you. We are free to role-play here. If you don't want to role-play a detainee for more than 24 hours, then after 24 hours, be on your merry way.

This topic smells like it stems form a bad Pvp encounter ...

I dont know of a source saying what happens the moments before you die or how much you remember of it. I am 100% certain however the time between being killed and returned is not something anyone remembers.
Death is enigma in FR and I would be cautious to say you remember everything up to the point your body ceased to function and support life.

I don't think I'm throwing caution to the wind when I say that there are cults that focus on developing the ability to recall exactly that moment you describe. Just sayin', recalling the events leading up to your death is less "dangerous" than telling a new player their character doesn't remember their death. Manipulating someone's role-playing with OOC comments is a big "no no" in my book. Role-playing a character that remembers their death, while some players may see this annoying or lame, it's perfectly okay to do.

Oh I have a pretty good insight on the dealings of death IC But back to topic, OOC is OOC and not IC. I agree with your statement.

My characters sometimes enjoy making up things they see when dead or imagining things to have happened. Nothing wrong with that. And hey, maybe you're right and your character ends up being a seer of some sort!

I always thought as is the same as for example, when someone dies in real life, but through various means like defibs, or some other things. I don't know the facts behind this, but what I'm lead to believe is, when you die, your heart stops. When blood can't get to your brain, it gets no oxygen, when your brain gets no oxygen, your brain cells begin dying. When your brain cells die, your mental efficiency becomes less able.
Lots of cases people begin suffering from traumatic head aches from being dead for even just a minute, some even a few seconds. My point is, if you die, your characters head is in most cases gonna be hurting like hell. As well as disorientation and nausea. Memory loss, I'm sure is a thing involved with it, but I don't think there's a set portion of your memory that you're to lose, such as the leading to your death, it can be varied right back to a childhood memory, or even speech impediments, temporary or permanent is up to you.
I normally keep these problems until a cleric or another means of high class healing can be done. Bringing my toon back to his previous self.

There's no real rules for any of these things given ingame that I'veever seen, so if anybody makes such demands of you, ignore them.
1. Memory and dying. Personally my characters generally forget everything that happened in the span of his last level if they respawn, are raised, or ressurected. (This is usually represented by loss of a level.) I'll let my character attempt to gain some hazy insight with a decent Wisdom check, success meaning my character might get a feeling of deja vu, or insightful feeling on the matter without outright memory revovery. True ressurection is full memory retention though.
2. Permadeath. Hahahah, no. Characters die all the time, short of a serious story element it shouldn't even be considered otherwise it's just a cheesy way for powerbuilders to god-mode their way through RP imo. ("Ahhh why bother dealing with you through roleplay when I can just outright slaughter your RP build and not see you again? Hah!") So yeah, just laugh at anyone telling you your dead-dead.
3. Detention. So far as I know, the only persistent detention I know of is if a DM tosses your character into prison somewhere, which is usually reserved for habitual offenders with bad behavior that's impossible to ignore any longer.

The only thing that is memory you lose is what happens after dying (When you're in the fugue, on the wall, etc, etc) and before you are raised.
So if a Cleric of Gargauth raises you, you can't come back to life and point fingers saying, "He's a cleric of Gargauth!"

Since you can 'sense' what patron is responsible for returning your soul, do you also retain that knowledge when your soul is actually returned?
What if you reject it?

Nope! You specifically do not retain that knowledge. That's part of the example I mentioned above. If you reject it or accept it, you don't remember which patron offered it to you, when you wake up.

If your character is caught up in RP that leads to death, it gets very tedious very soon describing how the wound in your head has slowly trickled like sanguine paint onto the floor to engulf your body in a halo of blood. Please, abide by rules of common sense and decency and hurry up with the protocol to move on to the part where the dead are revived and pulled back into the RP so as to include everyone. You can, and should, always make the necessary number of excuses to ensure the fun of everybody, and even if your character wouldn't be the sort of guy to even revive anyone from death, at least pretend that he accidently let the victim live.
As for me, I usually just wait for the situation to cool down after which I continue to RP in a fashion to make the most of the moment; delirious, scared, angry, discombobulated, muffled by the sock of a hungry ogre while being heaved into the cauldron. Anything that helps you immerse into the game is likely to help others, and you can very readily pick up from the atmosphere whether it requires you to shut up or spice up. Memory loss sounds more like a boring routine to me than something that would lead on the RP to more intruiging twists and turns. Not to claim that would always be the case, it is at least a gracious and humble reaction to death, just saying that I would never encourage people to use it as a common sense ruling. Having to go through the jazz of "Oh what happened, where am I, my head hurts, why?" every time might put the brakes on RP rather than set the wheels in motion.
When I'm tired and just want to zero my brain with an hour or two of mindless grinding, my characters are up and peppy in no time apart from the occasional muttergrumble, sputtergurgle, or "Ow that stings."

1. Memory and dying. I did once play on a server where there was a rule that your character didn't remember anything the first 20 minutes before it's death, or anything from after the adventure or encounter started. Back there I respected that rule more or less (it was hard not to metagame sometimes). There was also a rule that said your characters would also feel ill for a while after the raise (not after a resurrection though). On Amia though as there is no rule for it I am not rp'ing a memory loss before death as it's simply gimping oneself, and raises confusion of people start asking questions about what happened. I may rp though that the scene leading to the death is blurry for my character. When I am hunting though I won't really care to much and just toss in a line saying "ow that hurt, thanks for the help" (unless I feel like it was my teammates fault!).
2. Permadeath I have never heard of it happening but sending someone in a tell that their character is permakilled is just cheesy and disrespectful towards the player of the character. Say it was a several years old character, and it ends up at the wrong place at the wrong time it shouldn't be enough to demand the character dies. It would also been an attempt to stop rp from happening, which is kind of the point of Amia? rp?
3. Detention/prison. I am for persistent imprisonment as long as it leads to rp, and not just as a means to punish the character and not having to interact with it.

1) When you die and someone tries to raise you, your soul hears the call and is informed of both the alignment of the person performing it and their primary deity. This goes for when it is cast from a spell, scroll, or anything else.
2) It's nice to add some 'flavor' to dying if you forget some things before hand. Though, really, it's only beneficial if you are assassinated or ambushed or something. It allows PCs to perform such actions while maintaining some reality to the situation as opposed to immediately knowing what happened.

If you reject it or accept it, you don't remember which patron offered it to you, when you wake up. I think now I will bring up a little trick I have always used regarding this, both with my own PCs and with NPCs. If a cleric casts Raise Dead from their own spell list, the Spell would be cast with their alignment and with the aid of their deity. So assuming I were a bad guy that took a good guy's corpse captive but wanted to raise him, he would see that, oh, an evil cleric of Shub Niggurath is trying to raise him from the dead. Bad prospects, those. But scrolls are prescribed by an individual of a specific faith that may not be your own. And can be cast by any cleric (or UMD'er), regardless of alignment or deity. The scroll, therefore, may use the scribe's alignment and deity rather than the caster's. Thus I have, in times past, when my character is raising someone from a scroll, tell'd them "request is from a NG worshipper of Waukeen" instead of the character's alignment and deity. Never been 100% sure on this, but it seemed a great way to get around the whole "I refuse to come back because I know you are evil/good, nyah". Even though dying and being raised is already enough of an offense to my sensibilities. Just curious about thoughts on that.

There are some cool ideas in this thread. I really like the idea of role-playing a "seer."
While I also like the idea of knowing the character's deity and alignment that is ressing you, it's really just a cool idea, and not a rule. I don't think it would be cool to try to force someone OOC to give away their alignment and deity if they are trying to keep those facts hidden. But I'm all for role-playing that way, and it makes perfect sense.

Of course you can ask someone about that and they can lie or refuse and that's their OOC right, too.

While I agree with Yossarin's take on scroll spellcasting of raise dead, I'd have to think more carefully on the administrative piece. Seems fine, though. And then I'd have to look at the nature of scribed scrolls.
I'll come back to this when I'm coherent and not on my fifth margarita.

Could open a potentially big can of worms, if divine crafters become responsible for how "their" magic ends up being used. Do we really want alignments on heal potions? It might not be mentioned canonically, but it doesn't make much sense in my mind that bottled divine magic would work for something contrary to the deities' desires. (IE a Sharran quaffing a heal potion made by a Selunite right before getting slain).

There are certainly deities that don't care at all what the spells their clerics cast end up being used for (Orcus comes to mind). There are some that are EXTREMELY watchful of how their clerics' spells are used (Lolth comes to mind), but I'd say the majority are simply disappointed when their spells are used to create magic items that are used to work against their will. yay for tangents! I'll take the blame for this one. lol.

One time when Crow was captured by drow, they knew he would not accept a Raise from Lolth, so they went and got a cleric of Ao, lol.

No, servants of Ao have no access to divine spells whatsoever. Even the clergy, or in case of Ao, ministers. Hence my previous post.

i may be in the minority, but I have almost always attempted an IC raise after PVP combat.
My drow has, from rolling, believed in spreading fear of the underdark on the surface, and how much fear can there be if everyone who sees them winds up dead? His party kills everyone off, they move on and he raises one with 1hp, makes it so they know who put them down, and then knocks them out. But it leaves everyone with a chance to be alive and move on and not have a 'well we all just died what do we do now?' time. It lets the rp continue too, even if our two parties have ceased interaction.
But I started at a time when server culture was 'good wins in the end' because that tells a good story, so I tried to fall into the role of providing a antagonist for the good guys, not being an evil protagonist. Server has changed quite a bit now so I have some more freedom, but old habits die hard.

Can we just either remove raise dead scrolls entirely (except for player made ones) or else make them cost some ridiculous amount of gold and in doing so make death a ~little~ bit more meaningful for those that are not already trillionbillionquadrillionairs, and also buff up Clerics a little and make them desirable in parties for more than just buff bots.

Unlikely to happen. A better way imo to make death more meaningful is viewtopic.php?f=2&t=77995You're quite free to decide raise dead scrolls don't work on any of your toons though.

I know wishful thinking on my part but the business of death is completely without meaning at the moment and my level 30 healer Cleric has no job in adventuring as it is what with dumb barbarian War Knights (Hall ) with 10000 DR and more hit points that the Gods lol.
It just would be nice if when they did die to you know ~lag~ that I actually had a valuable role to play rather then just having to fight with the party who for some reason all really really want to use a raise dead scroll? Well anyone killed by a death effect/getting torn apart shouldn't be accepting resurrections from raise dead scrolls. But what ya gonna do. And yet they do, is there something that can be scripted? Like I don't know cause of death = x can only be returned to play by XZ spells (resurrection etc)EDIT: ZOMGI'm just reading the link Hudson gave and I'm busy doing a little dance at how cool the ideas there are. Please yes kthx!
