Is there some sort of guide on the forum or ingame? I just get told to go here: http://www.amiaworld.net/about/ds_j_system.html - which is a fine overview, but I'm quite frankly lost where to even begin on some of these jobs.

I have half way figured out archaeology and have gotten nowhere with arcanist.

I like the jobs system idea from a gaming and roleplaying point but I'm lost on how to do stuff with it!

Any tips, hints, directions to resources for the above two jobs would be helpful.

I will also try again to make some contacts ingame to get 'schooled' as well.

Thanks and hope this wasn't a completely idiotic post.

Most of the job system translates in creation of certain items, and that you can check in the resource matrix up there.
At some point, there's nothing else you can really do with the job system, and it falls entirely as an extension of knowledge of your character. A RP justification, in other words.

OK, so if for some unlikely reason, there is no ingame character willing or able to teach my character, the standard advice is to figure it out on my own?

You can always RP "learning" by study or some other methods - the instructors exist for a reason, as they are not supposed to be entirely OOC things.

You are pretty much allowed to RP it however you wish in the line of Common Sense. Want to play the disciple-master relation? Go for it. Do you want to brood in a corner with a book as everybody is happily socializing? Valid too. Write in the PC Forum the research? Sounds legit to me. Or even just hit straight the instructor and 11111111 until you have all you want - nobody is going to really bat an eye if you do it, but it's not really "fun" from the sane perspective of our roleplaying game.

In all of my time on the server, I've never seen another PC help anyone learn the ropes of the job system. However, it would be a very valid line of RP, IF you can find a PC willing to help.

EDIT: If you are just looking for OOC hints, I've never had the arcanist job but from what I read on the job page, you'd need empty pages and to use your job log on certain items in game. For the Archeologist you find certain dig sites around the servers, where you can retrieve items, and then 'research' them at the researcher's desk. Again you need empty pages and will get a book in return. I think you can then sell the books to job system book merchants, or use them for RP with others PCs.

This IC thread might be of some aid, but it is just the locations. Basically.. some jobs can get you good xp, some can get you good money, some can get you good RP. For instance, when I took Anatomist job for my PC I invested a lot of my time to learn every bone in human body, watched some live dissection shows, published an IC book about anatomy and so on. Basically, the best general hint I can give you is

"Let your imagination do the job."

To successfully roleplay a skilled Arcanist you should learn a lot about Arcana (ancient mysteries, magic traditions, arcane symbols, cryptic phrases, constructs, dragons, magical beasts). In addition to this, an Arcanist can create a mythal tube. It is a contraption that can store an unlimited amount of mythals of the same type. But being able to create mythal tube without having an idea what a mythal is.. that is just.. weird. I am always support maximal dedication to the characters and lore.

If you have questions about any specific jobs you are interested in, I would be glad to answer your questions and suggest a few routes you may take.
