I've been wondering how many players are playing some manner of pirate characters in Amia, and if that would be something you would be interested in getting in to or just seeing around.

Also, what manner of pirate character would fit in to the NWN mold in your opinion, Fighter/Rogue dual-wielding blades and a crossbow at ready? Are there some classes ideal for the concept of "Pirate" and are some classes unthinkable, like paladin? What kind of mannerism defines pirate in your books? What alignments are fitting for a pirate? Obviously we don't have much if any areas with boats around anymore, what's left for pirate to do around Amia without descending to common brigands? Are there any coastal towns that might still allow such activity even in the smallest of amount?

If you have some information about NPC pirate activity on Amia, feel free to give me a note about that too.

The classes that are hardest to picture, for me, as pirates is indeed pirates and paladins. That doesn't mean they couldn't fit in a pirate setting though. When it comes to wizards, they could be pirating while discovering knowledge on the seas, as an example

How narrow do you define Pirate? If you include Privateers then a Paladin could as easily be a Privateer.

The paladin was just an example of something that is very far from my image of a pirate, a Chaotic Neutral/Evil individual who makes his coin by stealing and robbing it from others.

If you have alignments, classes or even a short character concept you want to mention that fits your idea of a pirate, feel free to post it.

It would also be helpful if you had ideas of what some kind of crew would consist of, in this case perhaps 4-6 person crew to better fit it to Amias partying rules.

A trick with Pirates and Privateers , is that there 's an eccletic nature to them.

Paladins admittedly wouldn't fit a traditional pirate's role too unless they are in a world where the main maritime nations are well and truly evil and corrupt, in which case while they maintain their code of honor and ensure their crew does the same.

MOTIVATION would play a big factor in the above case and the distinction.

As for crews, again, Pirate Crew's are kinda eccletic:

What brought them together?

Did they form out of nescessity?

Did they form for glory and gold?

---

Barring those in mind, my ideal crew would include:

Captain: A class that can befit the role of leader (This thankfully is so open under the right circumstances I'm not going to try to define classes).

First Mate: Second in command, and ideally something that compliments the Captain.

Ship's Doctor/Chirurgeon: Healer of some permutation (whether be Druid, Cleric or Bard, though Druid and Cleric lend best to them).

Gunnery Master: Open-ended, this class would be best fit by someone who could manipulate the ship's weapons to their utmost, and coordinating the weapons crews to do the same.

Navigator: Another open-ended, this one would probably be best as a more academic class (Wizard, Sorceror)

The last slot's a real trick to fill in.. mainly because it all depends on what you already have covered and how.

While he's more a background character in my Gnome Tuomas' story, Captain Aloysious Valo is the Captain of the Sea Badger, and a Privateer in service of Lantan. Originally motivated by revenge, he tempers himself and finds himself more dedicated to his people and his country, albeit still maintaining a fierce personality which belies a Gnome's cunning. ((I'd probably make him Bard/Knight Commander on here if I was to make him.. third class depending what i'd need to make a Bard/KC role work))

Good points made there.

I was thinking of a group of pirates who were in it mainly just for the gold and kicks they get out of it, compared to some manual labour. Of course crew members that joined because the captain was just too charismatic in persuading them, or just had other motivations would be fine too, variety of motivations make for interesting play, after all.

Does anyone have an idea how such a group might -operate- in Amia, though? Obviously they'd need to be on land much of the time, that's just how the server is built, but I'm seeking examples of what activity would they be likely to invest themselfs in, Bar fights? Working to build a smuggling network? Turn to bandits? What?

And it can be as vague or specific as you want(Something like what Grymia posted, perhaps), if you have an idea of what kind of characters the group would consist of, feel free to post.

I'm not looking for specific answers here, more about what -you- think is the Amian pirate.

Aven ran with several pirate crews back when she lived in the Sea of Fallen Stars. Of course, being a water genasi ranger is almost like cheating in that business. No fear of drowning and strong swimming skills meant she was comfortable using heavier gear like chain or scale, and should conditions get bad or a fight look doomed, there was nothing stopping her from just jumping ship.

As far as I recall, there are NPC pirates. Perhaps, there could be an opportunity for the would-be pirates and seasoned sailors alike.

For a shameless plug, the Wharftown crew is very heavy on the naval themes and privateering/piracy. We're mostly good/neutral, but evils can find work if they play their cards right. Admittedly, we're more Pirates of the Caribbean than Black Sails, but there should be some opportunity for adventure coming up, depending on how IC shakes out.

I think a blackguard would make an excellent captain figure, especially if in league with Umberlee.. Or some strange eldritch horror that lurks far beneath the waves...!

Are cannons and gunpowder in use on Amia? Cause Arcane Archer pirate could be also really usable, just probably not in cannon fights.

Also I would say it depends on what position pirate has. I imagine captain as some sort of bard or rogue, who is more skilled in different areas and have certain know-how on how to deal with people. His first mate should be someone either wise and knowledgeable (but that can be navigator, if you have specific navigator function in the crew) = wizard / cleric / druid (?) etc., or someone who commands respect and is master of combat (basically any good fighter build, WM preferable?). Regular crew members... well I see them as mixture of rogue builds (utilizing sneak attacks, utilities, maybe even using HIPS) and fighter builds (punch it hard before it punches you!) :)
