Tempos and the Red Knight literally have a section of their dogma saying they accept basically any race or gender.

There are zero issues playing a tempurian or red knight follower of any race/gender. Divine or lay.

Would amia's player base be interested in a full rundown off our class list including how they relate to our lore, amia specific mechanics, and build related applications? I may be writing a series on this to assist our playerbase I'm roleplay and mechanical decisions for class selection and how to build.

While not against it, I do think telling people this might pigeonhole quite a bit of creative freedom... just a thought.

2) Considering the long lives of elves, do (younger) elves have some tendency to "dabble" in other religions and societies for a few decades before (usually) returning to more traditional elven deities?

I'm curious too, however... I think there are at least two sets of answers to this.

Let me explain, we'd have the FR answer, and the Amia answer.

In my experience, everything I've read about elves in Faerun is about them being fun-loving capricious, light-hearted, artsy, dancing generally happy people. Our Winyan Elves tend to be.... not that. That's not really a dig on our elves so much, but it has made it difficult for me and many others to play an elf on Amia.

So, there would be at least two sets of answers to your question and on Amia, each individual would have their own opinion on it.

There was a little discussion about demi-humans and human pantheons I was asking about here awhile back:

http://www.amiaworld.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=103&t=67263

There maybe some answers to be found here.

I was also reading Faiths & Avatars 2e and there a short section on demi-humans who worship gods outside of their pantheons. Essentially, the non-human gods of the races disapprove of their people following other gods and this negative attitude is passed down to their clergy and worshipers. Which in turn would mean they would be treated with anything from disdain to hostility within their own races depending on individual's beliefs. Therefore, most likely an elf worshiping a human god would be disapproved of by other elves. Of course it depends on circumstance. A human god worshipping elf in Winya may be treated differently from say they would by the elves in Elftown in Cordor. And then it depends on other player character elf's attitudes. I am just going on what the average elf would feel.

It also depends on the the type of elf and what their views are.

Wild elves sometimes only just worship rillifane rallathil, but there have been a lot of wild elves or even whole tribes that just put faith in nature spirits (or Silvanus).

Wood elves being one of the most open minded out of all them, it's common that they even worship the more ancient nature deities; Silvanus, and Mielikki.

I would assume Moon elves who are also fairly open minded, fun loving and curious wouldn't mind too much if an elf ventured out of the Seldarine pantheon.

But I guess it all really depends to each elf and what their views are.

How long, by boat, would it take to get from Neverwinter to Cordor? How rough are those seas between?

Neverwinter to Ruathym is about 480 miles, so I'm going to hazard a guess that it's somewhere between 600 and 700 miles to Amia from Neverwinter. A standard sailing ship goes 48 miles in a day, so if we take the 700 mile figure, we're looking at right about 15 days (14.58888~) one way.

Depends on the type of ship, but according to The North FR sourcebook it takes 5 days by caravel to reach Neverwinter from Ruathym, since Amia is further west from Ruathym according to this map, you have to estimate 2 or 3 days on top of that:
http://www.amiaworld.net/images/worldmape.jpg

But then in game mechanics boat travel around the isle is more or less instantaneous without any indication of journey time. It seems to take the same to to get from Cordor to Wiltun, as it does anywhere else. I haven't seen any lore rulings about. But I may have missed something.

Weatherwise at sea, The North says:

Quote:
Weather at Sea
The Trackless Sea crosses both arctic and subarctic zones. North of Luskan prevail arctic conditions, while the sub arctic reaches as far as the Moonshaes. Raging storms are common, and anything less than a stiff breeze uncommon. The storms reach their peak in winter, making travel impossible. A warm ocean current flows northward along the Sword Coast, warming coastal areas and giving them a milder climate than inland regions. This current turns west along the Cold Run and deposits its last dregs of warmth on the shores of Tuern.

Edit: just got beat to it by Tormak, probably better of going with his figures :D

If you've got sourcebook materials, it's probably better to go off that. My guess was just standard sailing ships and an estimate based off fo using map legends and ey from the 3.5 FR map.

Thanks! Raises the next question then I guess... what ships are standard given the setting? I'd assume military vessels would be a little quicker than some merchant ship but not all merchants have the coin to afford the best ships or the best crew.

So given all that and how unpredictable this stretch of sea is... between 8 - 12 days isn't unreal.

Actually, I think the estimates work out pretty much the same depending on ship. The caravels travel around 90-100 miles a day avarage. So could do it in 7-8 days. A larger merchant/military vessel like a carrack might be slower. Where as an elven ship faster.

In lands where there are humans, it is not so uncommon to find elfs worshiping other deities from different pantheons. You can start going through sourcebooks and see how many elfs worships out of Seldarine and see it is rather common. While preference is to serve elven pantheon because they are closest to your kind, it still can be so that elf keeps a respect towards those deities but chooses another path. How elves view varies, as mentioned, from friendly to hostile. Some like the idea and are curious, others don't care and some could be very hostile towards you. All are legid responses depending to the background and character.

Religion is not something humanoids 'dabble' in FR world where Gods are tangible. You have main deity and may pay respect to a large number of others, just because you have a main religion does not close out other deities. They are very real and tangible, especially for elfs who most likely are to remember the Times of Troubles better than humans. Certainly there is searching the correct path and people may change religion throughout their lifes, but such development is natural when mind matures and new ideas come forth, or does not.

To put elfs are just capricous and light-hearted, pranking creatures, would a mistake. They can be quite serious too. They focus for centuries to complete a work of art or a task, they can swear bloodoath to seek revenge and it is something that other elfs understand. The elven communication is complex, for elven language is spoken in such degree that intuations, places of words and right gestures at times may convey several meanings. In some sense, elfs enjoy the aspect of word play, not all such as wood elfs I suppose, and that migth be the humour. What I experienced in Winya is that you need to be able to read and respond in a fashion to keep up in some sense. In addition, elves are very choosing with whom they decide to show their playful side. I know for certain that my character was off-putting for most, but that was in purpose. There was also an aspect of a jester who those who interacted more and got closer saw, as was there a darker side her to counterbalance the lighter one. Elves are more readily to show their emotions truer to other elfs, I changed my toons behaviour in an instant when I saw an 'outside' of elven race. My toon would not speak of elven history, origins, magic or culture with those she did not seem worthy to teach on. And some aspects are extremely tender to discuss upon, something that is often too freely thrown around in Amia as I've seen... Even though some aspects should be rather rare pieces of knowledge is common here.

All in all.. Just make an elf and play as you wish. When I made my first elf, she ended up dating a paladin drow and the character almost got married to him nor did I know anything about elven lore, history or what they are about. If you think for a minute that you need to know extensive lore to play a common race, then there is something faulty in the thinking. Elves come from various sources as do humans and dwarfs. There are certain tendencies in all races, but it does not mean it is a must. If you meet an elven player telling you that you are doing it wrong, tell them to piss off. There is no one way to do and play an elf.

EDIT: In addition, I often read that Winyan elfs are hard to approach to or to play in. It is how you perceive it and feel, what most of elven players there have done they have taken what they know made an character and are sticking to it for longer periods of time usually. They do not try to OOC:ly show off or put you off, they simply are often interested of the race they play and bring in the pits and pieces of lore they do have. Don't take it as something it is not, sometimes the best way to learn about race is to make one and play one. Take up an apprenticeship, seek out those who IC:ly explain you stuff. It is all RP and there can be various reasons why your elf does not know of specific things. Play around the ideas and just do it.

Thanks for all of that. I ended up making a Tymorran cleric from Shadowdale. There is a 6% population of elves there, and a large temple to Tymora. It's also a major adventurer pit stop and many end up retiring there. My thoughts were it would make perfect sense for an elf from Shadowdale to A) Leave to adventure, B) Not only worship, but be clergy of Tymora, and C) Be more neutral in stance to other races

So far, she's a lot of fun, still spreading her wings so to speak and meeting people.

Common + race + 2 more + "be reasonable but as a rank 3 linguist you get a ton of free room to just know things, especially if you roleplay base comprehension and understanding vs encyclopedic knowledge".

Pretty sure some people also include Lore into the count, with something like 1 extra language per 10 base lore. Can't remember it exactly, but I know it's been done before.

On that note... I tend to put the languages my character knows into their Bio. I've met many (too many) characters that seem to speak every language spoken around them. I'm not saying they were lying or exaggerating, since I have no idea, just saying putting it in MY bio, keeps ME honest.

I believe that would depend on backstory. If you grew up in the north, you'll probably know illuskan rather than chultan, and vice-versa.

Does this mean lvl 10 SD can ask for stronger version of Shadowjump based on fact that said SD knows normal version but his skill with shadows is growing, so (s)he just asks and gets?

Do creature weapons (specifically Dragon shape in this case) count for purposes of unarmed weapon focus and improved critical?

Unless that was changed on Amia (which I didn't see a reference to) in most cases no, since the creatures are (mechanically) not unarmed but use creature weapons that in fact do specifically not count as unarmed. Dragon shape counts among those.

It is a bit wanky actually. Creature weapons do get the benefit of improved critical and overwhelming unarmed but not the focus.

I've seen people using the title "High Priest" of so and so a lot. One claims the title of "Prelate". Are these titles legit? I mean, were they named this by a higher power or are the players just using that title? To me, it's kind of like nobility, and would need approval, I'd love to hear what the team members think, just so I understand what the policy is on titles of that type.

Depends on how organized the faith is. Bane? That's a heretical faux pas. But I can point to one pc who literally it's dm confirmed as the high priest of their white religion just because it's such an obscure god.

That's my point... DM confirmed or it's BS. Just my opinion. Titles are an earned thing, not just "I made a priest, and his background is that he's the High Priest of this religion.".

My question is, does it really matter? I'm fairly certain that in some cases, player made subfactions/orders aren't "official". Then again not all faiths have an organized church that spans all of Faerun, but a gathering of different ones varying from region/country. Whatever justification a character has to claim such a title, be it from a church or organization or by himself, unless you can refute it Icly, I don't see how it matters. For instance my EO priest had a bunch of titles from his time in the Eternal Order, however when he left it he picked up the title of Prelate because he believed himself to be above most others and only took his "orders" from what he felt was Kelemvor himself.

If your character claims a title ICly, I hardly see any reason to enforce it OOCly. If you want to refute such, just do it ICly. Though to be fair, I'm pretty sure a few also call themselves prelates because 3 ranks in the preacher job names you Prelate in the job log.

In my opinion high-priests should go through a faith-specific trial to earn their place. After all, if a mere mortal wants to claim to be the highest ranking representative of a deity in the area, they should goddamn earn it. (Pun intended)

DM permission is required to claim noble status, but no such restriction applies (to my knowledge) to claiming High Priest(ess) status and I don't know that DMs have ever made a call on that (I could be wrong). It seems that the title goes to the person who claims it and backs it up with RP; there's a certain level of social engagement and faction RP that must go with such a title and, for so long as the player holds up that responsibility and their claim isn't disputed, I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to keep it.

My own character has claimed the (partly sarcastic) title of 'High Priestess of Sharess in All of Amia' for a number of years now, without any formal challenges; the only discussion I ever had with DMs about it was that I'd have to be higher than a level 2 cleric to have any serious claim to the position. :D Of course, there have been Sharessan clerics of higher level than Xavi but none has ever seriously indicated an interest in leading the faction (what there is of it) and they've tended not to stick around either (Naivatkal's character Salema is probably the longest-played one apart from myself that I know of). Only one other PC (Destiny Kamas) has explicitly been addressed by that title (by Xavi herself :) ), and that was almost 10 RL years ago when Xavi was still low level. My PC didn't adopt it until quite some time after Destiny's departure, during a long period when there were no other Sharessin on the server.

I think the Banites in their heyday changed high priests once or twice, and I assume this was decided by the players themeselves. Of course, challenging a High Priest's title would make for some interesting RP in and of itself.

I'm all in favour of this. On the other hand, it shouldn't be mandatory, but DMs should test the character periodically (and not necessarily in an obvious way). Whether self-styled or appointed, High Priests should be held to a higher standard than the rank and file in terms of faith (and its expression in RP) - the bigger they are, the harder they Fall.

I wholeheartedly agree, obscure faith or not.

I don't see a problem with this, actually. Advancement within the church hierarchy need not necessarily be based on cleric level, but could depend entirely on political connections. It's like the British monarch being head of the Church of England - I doubt that Queen Elizabeth has ever been formally ordained or is even qualified to celebrate a mass. Some deities may let the humans organize themselves as long as the basic message is getting across, while others may be more 'hand-on' in their management of their church.

Now, such a thing probably wouldn't happen in Sharess' faith because it tends to be less centralized, but if someone claiming to be a 'Prelate' started ordering Xaviera around, I guarantee there'd be some colourful suggestions made about where they could stick it. 8)

No one wanted to challenge Xaviera on the title. It was well played concept and all the characters knew what would happen if they did challenge her. ;)

In all honesty, usually the ones who I've seen to make a claim on a tittle have backed it up in IC and heavy roleplay. Personally, I won't start challenging it OOC because it is IC matter entirely. My toon could call herself a Queen of Amia and Rhuathym, it also has a word which such are called: Mad. However, unlike noble statuses, which usually tend to bear more resources to your disposal, unlike cleric one which places heavier restrictions as dogma is there. Nobles can do pretty much what they want, if they cross the line, nobility can quickly be removed as well.

If high priest needs to be request, I do not see why archwizard should not be. They all have something in common, an aspect of power that can be exercised in one manner or another. Hence, having a DM backing, through roleplay and perhaps a request to obtain such a status, is more than beneficial. Self-proclaimed statuses, rarely bear any fruit other than a fancy IC title which others may or may not use.

EDIT:

Perhaps in Xaviera's case, we wanted to believe she was and is the High Priestess. :D

Damn it, just have to double post.

In any case, please correct me if I am wrong. Is there anywhere stated that a faithful servant of a deity must be a cleric? Sure, priests get power from deities, but would it not be actually more beneficial to a deity that their servant is not a cleric. Hence, saving divine power and still the faith is growing? I really do not think they care if your char has lvl 2 or 30 cleric, it is mroe about how much you grow and represent their faith.

Hence Xaviera who made the faith fashionable in Cordor, became the High Priestess in a sense, she represented the faith and actually drew people into it (Other players joining to bring on a player base inside it). Once you do that, I doubt anyone will start disputing your status and those who would, well... AS said, could be interesting RP.

if you're a rank 3 priest in the job system it calls you a prelate.

so yes anyone can just become a prelate and have it confirmed ig by ig sources.

They aren't in shops yet, but DMs can provide them.

Is it possible to create a sustained attack spell trough scripting? For example a ray spell that does increased damage the longer the caster "stays on target".
