Tridents are modified on Amia, but only X2 crits I believe. Though you can use them one handed.

Not to my knowledge. Afaik it is either trident or monkey grip on spear.

tridents are simple weapons as well... but you can't take feats for them unless you have martial proficiency.

I think it's generally just a LETO request you put up. I don't think it requires DCs given how simple a thing it is. Though, I do believe you generally need a good reason for it.

If you have a good reason, you just ask a DM in game. They can change it on the spot.

Spell Resistance?

How does this work?

I read that it's: D20 + caster level + spell penetration vs SR, but... does the person defending get a roll too? Or... is it just straight SR?

Straight SR.

So you would need 20+30+6 = 56 MAX. So you would need 55 SR to be virtually immune to everything, I believe 20s still roll for success on SR.

Sooo.... 24 or 26 SR is pretty useless really against any mage character with 24 or more mage levels, which I'd assume most would have.

It isn't completely useless since there are a lot of magical trinkets and scrolls about on top of monster abilities that it can help resist.

But versus an actual dedicated mage, yeah it isn't so great.

SR is one of those things you have to heavily invest in as a monk to make it viable.

Out of curiosity then... and I only ask because I purchased plate that has 26 SR on it, and you needed to be level 22 to use it. Essentially, from the day it was bought, it does... very little.

Why can't we bump up SR on Amia? I know Arcane Defiance is 32 SR, and even that... a level 30 mage with spell penetration can break that EVERY time. I suppose I am not seeing a use for SR unless as Mav said, you're a monk. Even Drow, with their 39... a 30 mage with spell pen, will break that on anything higher than a 3. Seems a bit... underpowered to me?

It's not meant to be widely available to a lot of people, or that would skew the power level like crazy. SR is good, and it does seem underpowered under a certain amount, but the other side of that is grossly overpowered... SR is more of a nice thing to have when you need to grind a lot of stuff, or when you face off against casters who aren't full CL (like spellblades!). Or lower level spawns.

Haha! Trust me. You don't want a bunch of non-monk SR banks running around. The Monk ones are a pain as it is! (Looking at you, Vera.)

I see that, but I suppose my point was... unless you can achieve over... 38? Which is virtually impossible for anything but a drow, monk, or cleric.... it's useless except against NPC things or mages that are multiclassed, and even that is debatable, since... SR 26 on my armor won't do a thing to them. Even at 32, they only need to roll a 2 if they have spell pen, and an 8 if they don't.... that's good odds, and that's the best any non SR character can hope for... and that's against a very non-optimized mage.

However.... you say it's op to have it available? To me... and I might be wrong (I usually am about these things), it's a way to avoid a spell affecting you... and all that mage had to do was take 3 feats and 30 levels. Yet, to have a CHANCE to protect against it, you must also take 30 levels, and.... 4 epic feats? to get... 48 SR? That means, they only need to roll a 12 to beat it, that's a 1 in 3 chance to beat a character that DEVOTED their build to it. I mean... really, they would give up so much to do that, I just don't see it being worthwhile, and that's the BEST CASE SCENARIO?

Even if the mage didn't take the 3 feats.... they have a 10% chance of beating a character's SR who literally devoted their build to it. I'm not against a chance of success, actually, I think that's great... I just don't understand why SR any higher than we have currently on items would be op.... since... it does about nothing until you reach 40 SR or so... then it's marginally good until you get to mid-high 40's.

What am I missing?

Nothing. SR is only insanely powerful on monks who can boost it up to 50+.

Otherwise it is a nice convenience.

Honestly though you would be surprised how few pure mages with all the spell penetrations there actually are out there. Drow are a pain in the ass to fight for most mages who aren't pure and have their feats stacked for spell pen. That is powerful.

I personally don't want to see mages/clerics/any other caster nullified because someone had the gold/DCs to get ridiculous SR on an item. There's no devotion there. No feats or class levels. It's an instant-win.

Even if it only works 50% of the time, a caster has a limited number of spells. Two or three offensive spells fizzle and they're going to be eaten alive by the sudden Weapon Master in their face because who wails on a summon when killing the summoner does away with both? And this happens just because of one piece of gear only really available to boss farmers or people who can get DCs. Not because you're playing a dedicated mage-foe type of character.

So many spells allow for Spell Resistance and it's just not a good thing to introduce now. It'd be like giving non-melee characters access to Immunity: Slashing Damage or something. Not effective against all attackers or the elemental damages on the weapons, but that's a significant impact with consequences that reach far in the Balance world.

In my opinion!

Nalkanar, you missed my point, I agree with some chance of failure on both sides... Was just trying to find out why it seemed so lopsided in favor of the mage.

*shrug* I suppose I get it, but... why have items with 18 SR on them at all ingame? Does anyone use this? DD's get 24 SR at level 15 or something now... does it really do anything? I mean other than low level mobs that can't hurt you anyway.

Some people don't have such an easy time leveling and those SR items are super convenient at lower levels! :D

They're also ridiculously expensive and lower than 20 SR plain isn't worth it. You're better off investing in energy resistance items or bubbly/freedom/mindblank potions.

32 SR is a convenience, but easily gotten, so that's all it should be. Let higher SR be the providence of those classes and class features who invest to make it higher.

So, I've been thinking about starting a DD (all aboard that hype train), but I don't want to make a standard metallic or chromatic, or a half- or quarter-dragon. Just a regular, non-standard disciple.

So my question is: If I wanted to make a Mist (since that's what I'm considering) DD, would it require a special character request?

(Why Mist? Because I don't think I've ever seen one and I think it'd be fun.)

Mist dragon would require a request.

The only variant that is standard on Amia, is shadow. It's listed with the others, on the Classes page.

Dragons of Faerun would help you, though Mist Dragon lore is hard to find :P

Yeah, i figure just in case you didn't have DoF. That's pretty much all the info in existence, I'm afraid. As far as 3.5.

Deep Dragons really needs to be Added as a DD choice. Highly prolific, and even known to guard UD cities of humanoid races as parts of Deals, without even mentioning their notable presence in places like Skullport.

Really the fact that shadow dragon has been an option with deep dragon missing has long bothered me as they are by FAR the most logical DD bloodline for virtually any UD race.

More info on Mist Dragons can be found in Monsters of Faerun. It actually mentions that in the glossary of Dragons of Faerun. Or SOMEWHERE in there, at least.

... Or was it the Draconomicon that referenced Monsters of Faerun? I think it was that, actually. But either way, there should be some info in Monsters of Faerun.

How significant is amia compared to the rest of the world?

On one hand it seems really backwater and minor.

On the other we got a boat impossibly tall and longer then two C-5 galaxy's showing up to bring one person for a favor.

It;s incredibly backwater and minor with the following exceptions:

The Sword Coast
The Frozen North
Ruathym
Cormyr
Thay (via Khem)
Mulhorand (via Khem)
The Moonshaes, partly
The Whalebones, partly

Well at least a little more than 'backwater and minor' in regards to certain things, I mean it has had epic level events, the presence of gods, was the Direct cause of the Rise of a New Demon Lord among countless other things that would make it an important place in the Canon of the Amian FR.

Amia though is supposed to be pretty out there in the middle of the ocean, isolated enough that unless you have reason to head there, its not really "on the way" to anything in terms of trade routes or of any strategic value. So in that way certainly "backwater" although I think that alone would be selling it short some.

Nope. Nor does it decrease an item's base gp value, which determines the level requirement in the first place.

how exactly do i get a weapon made so I can make a DC request?

do I just gather a bunch of materials I want in it and be like 'here I want this' to an ig blacksmith or something?

my character knows literally nothing about smithing or forging or anything and im sort of at a loss as to how I 'rp' besides giving specifications and supplying some exotic materials.

Pretty much hit up a master smith with an idea of what you want and let them worry about the smithing RP. Thats what most people who want armour from Elwyn do at least.

Precisely what I did with my dorf smith, people would ask for such and such weapon or armour made and I would figure out the RP for it which they could use to post in their DC request. Or you could find a priest or mage to enchant the weapon alternatively. Screens or a couple forum posts usually do it. Just make sure the lore is sound for whatever they're doing!

I have a couple of questions about the Alter Self widget:

    1) Once you've activated the widget, can you put on clothing/armour from your inventory if it's a similar form or does the image created by the widget have a fixed wardrobe that is specified at creation?

    2) I assume that this is a two-way item that simply toggles on and off and has no set expiry time?

    3) Does the effect turn off at every reset, or does it keep its state through a reset?
