I think one small stretch of land, Area should be marked by Sign posts and warnings, and be a Badlands, a crossroads where there are no PvP Rules on Amia. No Perma's. Off the trail where New Pc's or Chars can not access. Ambushes, Bandit's, Raiding party's ect...by Pc Posse's of Toons! OOC raise costs 100k and Toon is banned for 24 hrs from area if team loses. Just spit Balling, but thought idea would be fun and feed PvP Folks appetites! Just one area, i think it will do wonders for folks who are used to PvP and need that FIX!.

Can you make a Transit Level based so only lvl 30's can enter there?

Not trying to Diss, but Blood Orcs area would be good to make as a war zone. That area has always been laggy and needs a over Hall. Sorry, a lil bit tipsy, not trying to trash anyone or there time put in but thought these would be a good ideas. Hell, I suck at PvP! LOL A training ground for PvP would be nice, at your own risk. Blah blah blah's!

Having an area restricted based on levels cannot be accounted for ICly unless there's some sort of explanation for a barrier that can expertly hand pick subjects of suitable strength. It wouldn't be able to be any natural area, but rather some cave/underground with powerful magic that can reject people too weak or who have 'become' weak temporarily from dying in the area and respawning elsewhere. To continue ICly, the area could remove any bodies that are there too long (that is, players that respawn rather than waiting for a raise that could only be IC, not OOC). In addition, raises could be allowed instantly in this one area so a healer among the group can make more significant contributions.

Certainly an interesting idea, but unless it's a completely OOC arena, it has to have IC explanations. Having this rather complex arena appear out of nowhere or be created to such standards (if it's even possible) will be extremely difficult. I'd be best to work out and agree to everything before laying this on DMs/designers to try and create (if they can and have time for it among their other work).

Amia Frontier with inhabited races and adventurers makes a great claim for an Outlaw frontier place. Like the Wild Wild West!

A lot of PvP will be a Gentlemans wager. OOC Trust. Set rules. Work in progress if the idea catches steam!

same.

I like the idea, or parts of it at least. Would prefer to see it ICly. Something akin to the dark zone in The Division?

It is possible to have different types of warnings show up for any PC walking over a trigger (a patch of ground), which could include an IC flavor message about the common banditry in the area, and an OOC one stating the lack of PVP rule enforcement in this particular area.

i don't like it because it's artificial. I like amia pvp because it's almost spontaneous. i already see the whole of amia as the 'dark zone' with only personal motivations limiting me, so I see no reason to add a zone that does what we already have.

you don't need permission to pvp. if you see someone you don't like and have an actual reason to not like them, and your character is an ass, tell them to leave "or else." if they don't, or rest, or buff, or quaff, kill them.

the whole world is basically as you describe. there's no reason for a 'no-rules' pvp as it goes against the spirit of the server.

The whole point of the area is that there are no PvP Rules. No RP required before attack, but you can if you want too, no sending a Tell warning folks there Toon is about to be attacked, and no way to back out of a fight. A lawless Land.

Maybe even have an Epic Merchant or something else in the area to make it worth while going there. Plus a 100k a rez, you could get rich quick, or die trying. Yeah i just bit 50 Cent. 8D lol

While I don't hate the idea... I can't see how changing the price for a res makes any sense. Sure, some sort of store/bar/hangout spot there would be a good idea. A "lawless land" is kind of a neat idea actually.

well I think I will just thow it out there, I only think a lawless land will lead to pvp camping and little more, while the idea is good on paper, I have little faith considering some of the pvp we have seen in the past and how much anger and constant bickering and argueing it has done.

I would focus on improving rp, rather than pvp, for this place will not have alot of rp only a small niche of people that bash eachothers head in and anyone that goes there.

*edit*

also actions in this area would carry over to the rest of the server, giving more rise to pvp, and I have no faith in that being resolved peacefully with all due respect to all the good pvp'ers out there and people who rp great and act fine ooc'ly, not everyone is like that, and we should foster more rp before fostering pvp conflict, right now I think the server needs less player conflict and more pnp traditional conflict against npc's it worked great for a very small group of dwarves when brogdenstein was starving for rp, and it can work great for everyone else too.

I agree with Kranuimbrud.

The server encourages powerbuilding enough as it is, this would make it worse, in my opinion. There are plenty of lawless areas, and an arena to fight in, that anyone can get to.

I disagree, constant player conflict and actions fuels a large portion of the server's day to day activity when DMs aren't around. It's absolutely critical to the life and excitement of the server that players feel empowered enough to take the frameset, work within the rules, and create plots and stories for people to be involved in.

There's a difference between character conflict, and outright slaughterhouse with no server rules. I'm all for character conflict, that's not the point of the OP's suggestion.

yea, im all for player conflict, though I prefer pve conflic, I am just not for a pvp specific area, as I dont believe it will lead to any rp what so ever and only give ooc headaches, and encourage powerbuilding.

The entire server is a pvp arena where by the most banal token effort at role play satisfies the letter (but not the spirit) of the server rules, thus allowing pvp builds with next to no RP value to be unleashed on rp builds in what is defacto god mod play.

We need less pvp and more concern for creating engaging rp not more tools to abuse pvp.

I completely agree that this has no reason to exist, as long as assassins still have to send tells, and anyone who unironically thinks it should deserves to feel bad.

I'm NOT, however, going to support or condone any of the vitriolic statements declaring PvP too common or antithetical to roleplay; there are exactly two PvP encounters I have had on this server that I have ever felt weren't meant to generate any fun and weren't built up with either context or any roleplay around them.

Two.

Others did follow the letter but not the spirit; however, the ones that actually had context were simply initiated by players who weren't sure of their results, knew they didn't want to get taken advantage of, and was followed by an apology.

Just because someone isn't following what you consider the 'spirit' of the rules doesn't mean that it should ever be chastized. If you think a player is breaking common sense, report it. If you think a player is fighting you for reasons that aren't meant to push along the plot, report it.

That's what I do.

Not sure how your examples are strictly relevant to the topic, I was just saying that the entire server is a pvp zone and that ALL it takes to have pvp is token rp to make it server rule "legal".

It wasn't a commentary on the subject of how much or how little there is on the server just a comment on how easy it is to go from rp to pvp, without the need for special zones and rules on top of the already existing and massively abused rules for pvp here.

I do admit that situations can easily devolve into PvP. Definitely not a fan of PvP at all, myself, but if it's not some technicality or similar that is exploited to lead into the PvP, I'm generally alright with it. But I do agree that some (perhaps not recently in my experience) can be a bit quick to jump into PvP. Luckily, however, we do have a rule where you MUST give the other person a chance to back down or leave, in some way, if you are actively engaging in PvP. Of course, if both sides agree to the PvP, then that's fine within the rules. And at least in my own experience, both sides agreeing to PvP is generally due to a mutual understanding of the IC conflict that has arisen. Through that, it just adds some nice stuff to the server.

Properly playing out conflict and using PvP when it makes absolute sense is always good. But I'll definitely agree there have been those who also prefer to jump into PvP for many wrong reasons. Be-it lording levels over another, someone simply tossing an insult at your character, or even in the rare case, OOC rage or similar. Now, I don't by any means accuse the players here of doing any of that. But I am stating that those sorts of reasons definitely exist across all of NWN (and beyond, really).

Wasn't actually targetting anyone specific btw. I'm just not a fan of the "powerbuilding is satan" mindset I see starting to be expressed by the broader range of people here. It divides the playerbase more than the acts themselves; and doesn't really need to be taken into context to say this is a bad idea.

It's a bad idea without that. What is being requested is a literal 'arena server' area that can't contribute to RP because it won't actually inflate conflict -- the Underdark already allows in-settlement PvP and that's the closest I think Amia would or should come to accomodating the niche this asks for.

Well remember that pvp doesn't have to be lethal. People irl fight all the time over the dumbest shit ever. I don't see why amia wouldn't reflect that.

Also something I agree with fully, yes. I should've probably been clearer in that I was referring to more lethal PvP. If someone wants to have a subdual fist fight over an insult, I say go for it. XD Could definitely have some fun with something like a large bar brawl. Would actually love to see something like that happen. Haha.

I actually like the area of a wild lands or lawless area but with certain rules that are for fair sportsmanlike. I suppose if you log on and are put on dislike I think you should assume it only means that the player that has disliked you is in this hostile area. Don't want pvp don't go there.

I have been on this server for quite a few years now and the pvp rules still cause confusion to me. Personally I think a lot of the pre-fight IC insults and groups provoking fights around Bendir Dale cause more OOC problems between players than the fights themselves.

I would rather not lift the pvp rules in any of the general server areas. You already have those options with the assasination rules if you want to go for that and you have a target in mind.

We had something else in mind to create such zone in an isolated area and not on Amia or the standard server area proper.

PVP and character conflict is part of the RP but it should not make Amia a slaughterhouse. The grounds outside Wiltun looked like that back in 2008 (and even that was against the rules) before the OOC restrictions had to be implemented. No more of that shit please.

That was people exploiting and breaking the rules, though, that can't be compared to people in a designated area going there to seek conflcit RP that might be resolved mechanically. It's not a fair comparison, imo.

Personally think some alternatives to boss hunting, grinding or social RP may be a good idea with the low numbers of late. Pvp area may help with that and keep those who desire pvp away from the social RP settings.

This could be done with a fight club or arena league done RP-ly at currently ig arenas.

Mechanical power absolutely trumps roleplaying power. If the person you're interacting with is mechanically superior, they own the interaction on all levels. If they decide they want to exercise that power by killing you or making demands, there is nothing you can do ICly to stop them. All of the roleplaying on your end in the world, even if you are Shakespeare himself, will accomplish absolutely nothing if the guy with the powerbuild has whims contrary to where you want your character's RP to go. I still remember the days when the standard operating procedure for PvP was to 'give the other player an out', and then when they took that out, kill them anyway. That structure was every instance of PvP I experienced outside a DM event (and I rarely showed up at those because I knew PvP was inevitably going to be involved) and one of the primary reasons I called it quits back then - not interaction, just some kitted out level 30 swinging their dick around. When everything rests on a false visage of conflict where one side doesn't actually have any say in how events progress, you're better off going to a fetish server and playing the bottom in a BDSM dungeon because at least then you volunteered to be someone's bitch.

The disparity between powerbuilds and 'RP builds' is toxic. It is horrifying. Every interaction ends up being weighed against the idea that if this person wanted to, they could negate your contributions, kill you, accomplish their own goals and suffer no consequences, whether both parties realize it or not. Some of you have been wondering where the players went? Maybe some of them left because one guy with a dragon shape build can nullify all of your RP contributions to a situation just because they feel like it, and there is nothing.

You.

Can do.

About it.

Watching the people who make their mark on the PvP scene and the powerbuilders complain about being persecuted sickens me. YOU have all the power in this relationship, not because of your roleplaying contributions, but because when you factor in your mechanics and OOC knowledge, yours become the only ones that matter. The only recourse anyone who doesn't want to optimize or doesn't CARE about optimizing has is to lock themselves up in a city and chat with friends, because leaving that safe zone is grounds for instant and unforgiving punishment and everyone knows it.

I'd be surprised of the majority of people gave a damn whether they 'lose' in PvP. I certainly don't. It's an extension of interaction and consequence. But PvP can and, in some places, has, outright REPLACED RP, because one has wiggle room and 'I crit three times you're dead' does not. And THAT is the part I find reprehensible.

I'm all for a PvP-only arena. Maybe that separation will allow some of us to have meaningful conflict without mandating a server-wide implicit ban on not being minmaxed all to hell.

im pretty abreast of all the pvp on the server and i have no idea who is, frankly, bullying you so hard you feel like you can't leave cities.

if you're actually so afraid that some gang of pvp people is just going to roll up and undo you, it's not happening. talk to dm's, that stuff doesn't happen, and if it is, then you're just being bullied and the dm team is going to put the kaibosh on it.

so yeah. don't live in fear.

edit; if there was a specific interaction with one of my characters that's made you feel this way please please please let me know.

Commie, the very impetus for you being abreast of all PvP on the server is some random asshats rolled up on you, curbstomped you without providing an out, and turned you into Lucifer. I remember your supervillain origin story! We have a very pervasive attitude on this server of 'I HAVE to optimizing/gear out/be the very best, like no one ever was', and it's certainly not so we can pull better CON checks while drinking with our friends in the bar.

I went to cast bulls strength on myself, and was murdered for it with wails of the banshee, as buffing means you forgo your pvp warning, and I found out later, my 'out' was to march unbuffed into a pack of frost giants. At the time, I wasn't built for PvP. I didn't want to PvP at all when I arrived. But that's when I learned, if you arn't built to fight, and don't want to fight, doesn't mean someone won't just come up and push your shit in, no matter how much people say it's not a PvP server.

That 'fight' was pretty much the biggest 'thing' that ever happened to me as a player on Amia. It changed the paradigm. It single handedly changed how I build and play every character on Amia.

Because of that, I learned gear and levels and builds matter. A lot. Otherwise someone can basically kill you anytime they want and there isn't shit you can do about it.

I will adjust one particular part of my statement. They provided an out. Good for them. But as you know, that out was a technicality and they leapt on that excuse to PvP you because they could. In fact from the context of that post I could easily make the argument that you wholeheartedly agree with me.

Yeah but the missing part of the story was that I didn't know at the time that the whole interaction was BS and should not have happened as it was against the rules.

I agree that powerbuilding is a thing and its pretty much impossible to beat a powerbuild if you're rocking epic skill focus diplomacy bluff and intimidate, but it's really irrelevant; I think the biggest potential pvp thing on the server in the past few months was solved without fighting and pure RP.

If someone's just rolling around mercing people on a flimsy excuse, the dm team whacks em. It's how it goes. If you see it report that shit.

What I don't think you realize is that we totally agree with each other. That 'excuse/out' was total BS and just a means to kill you because they could, as I stated. But we also agree that the power dynamic in RP situations is wholly skewed towards mechanics, rather than RP, or to phrase it more elegantly:

"Gear and levels and builds matter. A lot. Otherwise someone can basically kill you anytime they want and there isn't shit you can do about it."

If I don't CARE about gear and levels and builds, I can be invalidated at the drop of a hat. And you and I are on the exact same page, whether you admit it or not. Although actually, you already did.

Yeah and the DM team later told me the whole encounter was BS and it was against the rules. So we are in agreement there. Doesn't change the fact that I took things away from it.

Yes and no. You have to have a reason to make an enemy like that, and you have to have a good reason to pvp. Just because you want to isn't a good enough reason. The 'any time no warning no real justification' is BS and isn't allowed. It's rule breaking. Either way this is getting out of the scope of discussion. If there was a 'war zone' though I wouldn't be there, because I like when fights have substance and consequence. A battle area really has neither. I just wouldn't participate.

Also as an aside, I offer ic pvp lessons, in which I teach you mechanics ic and help you out. My current main is a monk fighter, if you ask him to teach you how to fight he's just going to say yes. I really enjoy doing it ic and ooc. I've done it many times and everyone gets something out of it. It's also extremely entertaining to explain essentially nwn mechanics in RP terms, which is easily the most fun part of the experience. Well, that and watching people leave with confidence, then getting a tell two weeks later going "I can't tell you what just happened but thank you so so so much for the lesson!"

"Now entering a party pvp area". A majority of the server is already a warzone, you just have to have the justification for it. Now. Whst would be cool is an arena that isn't the size of a treasure chest. It's cool and I like the mechanics of it, but it's simply far too small for any realistic appraisal of ones abilities. Yes a monk fighter is going to push in your poo if you are a caster, because by the time you cast your first spell, he's smacked you on the pee pee four or five times. Just a larger arena space for team events, characters who rely on mobility to fight, ect.

Yes the server is already a PvP zone, but no the RP justification doesn't need to be fulfilled. Depending on the DM that gets called to moderate the ensuing dispute an after the fact "That's what my character would have done" will usually suffice. As soon as "having an out" in PvP included "Kneel or die" in which the usual result was PvP for not kneeling or death via RP for kneeling, rules became a moot point.

As far as having a larger arena for PvP, you can already do that. But what the proponents actually want is to be victorious without any responsibility, there are plenty of zero population servers where you can PvP to your hearts content and not piss off everyone else for being a ass about it.

Wasn't Actland similiar to this idea? Two poles, good and evil, open PvP.

They were instanced areas divided by alignment, so good people got sent to the Good instance and evil people got sent to the Evil instance. It was done like this for engine limitation and faction/NPC reasons. Also because the areas differd slightly based on the quest you had.
