So I just got done holding the PvP tournament, and I'd like to solicit some feedback from people. This is a topic for constructive OOC feedback, and not to raise issues that are on an IC level - i.e. the rulings my character may have made as host of the tournament, in regards for disqualifications or forfeiture of fights. My character made the rulings he did on an IC level, with some amount of OOC arbitration from myself, and can be approached IC about those rulings.
I'd like to offer forward a few questions with an open comment section below attached. My goal is to run these roughly once a month, with smaller events possibly more frequently, but if the playerbase doesn't enjoy them, I don't want people to feel like I'm grinding their face into the ground with it.
1: Did you enjoy the event? Yes/No, and why? Please qualify if you fought or not - spectating, fighting, and the opportunity for PCs merchanting and betting and the like are all important to me. I want the event to be fun for everyone involved.
2: Did you feel the setup provided an opportunity for as many people to enter as possible and create a fair playing field? This is largely a mechanics question - it's no surprise I'm really big into the actual game we play, and fairness in the tournaments is of paramount importance to me. Right now, there are no plans to alter the ruleset or restrict Heal Potion access. I understand at the end of the day the tournament was largely geared towards level 30's. In the past, so few people under 30 tend to enter fights that mking separate brackets resulted in only 1 or 2 people being in that bracket, and everyone else in the 30's.
3: Was the venue OK? Could we choose better in the future? I chose the Skull Crags monastery because it's a larger, open area, easily accessible by most anyone on the server regardless of PC level (it's pretty easy to run past trolls and stick to the road). Other areas could be chosen but would require more DM intervention, and I was trying to keep it as hands off as possible in case we couldn't get that help. Choosing other areas also has the issue of not having access to free resting or free respawns or the like without a DM handy.
4: Were the prizes alright? Any ideas here? I spent a good few weeks trying to track down "Creator" style PCs in an attempt to highlight some non-combatant PCs who might have been interested in creating a trophy, but ultimately no PC was interested. That could come down to a lot of reasons (Korthan isn't the paragon of justice, for sure.), but I'm curious as to if there's something I can do to be more motivating on that end. My goal with the trophies is twofold: To reward the winner of the fights with some prestige, and to offer PCs who might not take part in the fight an opportunity for their crafting or creator-style PCs to be recognized as prestigious makers of trophies and masterpieces. In the end, I sought out the Djinn because otherwise I didn't have a prize to give out other than GP, which isn't really typically inspiring to the sort of characters that enter these tournaments.
5: Would other formats, styles, or contests be wanted? I have a few other ideas, but a lot of them tend to be skewed greatly towards one style of class or another, such as foot races, scavenger hunts, or the like. For fighting there are things like free-for-all melees, 2v2, 3v3, and so on. The more complex fighting arrangements require a lot more entrants to properly work - a standard double elimination bracket works pretty handily with only about 8 people, and with less than that, round robin is possible. Massive free for alls are absolutely hilarious but probably require some DM-level support - mostly to, uh, make me invincible so I can stand in the fray, not die, and just watch without fighting to actually see who wins admist the probably like 5 hellballs.
6: If you WERE a fighter, do you feel my handling of the event prevented downtime, boredom, and other things between your participation, and do you feel my handling of the event allowed for fairness in the fights? For this question, please disregard any issues related to spectators - future fights will have a big printed rule that says "any fights between spellcasters must be given extra berth by all spectators - casters are expected to still control their summons."
7: If you were NOT a fighter, do you feel my handling of the event kept you entertained, able to do things, and kept the event flowing smoothly from event to event, with enough time for you to do things? Speaking as a coordinator - I began to give less and less time to bets because characters were not making them or taking them when they were made. In some cases, I saw that characters would make bets, but they would be responded to by players on the far side of the arena and could not be properly made. Is this something I should handle more efficiently? Is gambling a thing I should support? For PC merchants who are interested: Can I give you more set up or more time to ply your wares? Can I do something to support you here? I'm interested in supporting all PC types, and merchants showing to hawk their wares is part and parcel of the big gladiator process, IMO. Wares of all types - food, drink, furniture, weapons, whatever.
8: Any other comments or concerns here. Is PvP degeneracy and should be removed from the server? Is the event great you just don't like PVP so you don't want to show (or maybe you don't like Korthan?)? Did the event suck, get rid of it? More often? Less often? Bigger prizes? Smaller prizes? Anything here.
It's my hope that these gatherings are more than just the fights, but also reasons for the playerbase to gather, and for players who might not commonly run into each other to get a chance to mingle and talk, or even just a chance for IC friends to hang out somewhere besides their usual haunts, and point and laugh at the spectacle. That might seem a little overly benevolent for people who see Korthan first-hand, but I think it's important that something like this exists on a relatively regular schedule, just to keep us all closer as a community. It's no surprise that I was a big fan of Arena Fight Nights, years ago with Ruce and Suney, and while I can't run it as much as they can, I'd like to try and kick the tradition up again.
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond, I appreciate it. The next event is scheduled tentatively at some point in late February.

3 buff go creates a lot of choices nuance. You can get some important buffs but by no means catch all. I really like how 3 buff go works when there are many things potions scrolls can do and how many things you want to safe guard.
I would love to see lower level tourneys for variety. Kind of like pauper for those familiar with MTG.
I had a great time at the tourney, I think more time for betting would be nice.

There could be a push for lowbies under 10 and people can make a new character for this event.
_________________ Plays: Sylveera : Sun Elven fury packed in an Arcane Archer, not a Drow, promise. Tetrik : Greed incarnate in a Duergar. Budly : Has gone to a better place. Barrililath : Shadowy Drow, probably less Drow than Sylv ever be.
I wouldn't say make a lowbie for that event (I tried that. No matter how good the event is, you are less likely to continue playing a character when you already managed the goal) but something aimed at lower pcs would maybe be nice. I remember back when this was a DM story, there was something like that. Also, and maybe rhis would be too crazy, but I think a grand slaughter might be fun. And yes, it would be a hell of a slaughter.

1. I enjoyed the whole event. I fought as Malice, my shifter, but quickly realized he was very ungeared for any true fights considering he was DC leveled. Though I also spectated the end of it. 2. I believe the opportunity for any character interested in entering was very ample. 3. Apparently there are some OOC confusion towards why that area was selected, as I'm sure you know.. But I think the area was smart. 4. The prizes were appropriate for the scale of combat one did to get the first prize. 5. I think there should be multiple type of combats. - Melee vs. Melee. - Caster vs. Caster (Divine - Divine, Divine - Arcane, Arcane-Arcane) 6. You handled it like a master. 7. ^^ 8. Hopefully, in the future, I'm able to attend as a smarter character. Someone who is actually geared, and I'm confident can offer some sort of IC entertainment towards the players who attend. (Ie / HoJo is better than Malice).

I'm so pleased that through sheer luck of B resetting when it did I was on A selling loot to hear the announcement about the tournament, thought I would crash it and see if I could get my Salandran a ring side seat and I did! Got my first DC as well so first step on taking over the world has been taken!
In respect of the particular questions I feel had a relevance to my characters participation.
1.) Yes see above!
3.) The venue seemed fine to me, but I am not familiar with other places that might be better or not.
7.) Overall I think it was a very well handled event, however it did feel like it began to telescope towards the end by which I mean it seem to get a little rushed but I appreciate that RL time was probably an issue compressing the need to get IC resolutions completed.
7a.) My only complaint (for lack of a better word) is less about the event itself and more about how wounds and healing are dealt with (or more often ignored) ICly. A fact on this server I had not had occasion to appreciate until attending this even.
It seems that one moment a character casually dismisses as nothing the wounds caused by an epic spell by chugging a heal potion, but the next moment everyone is rushing over with raise dead scrolls and pvp tools to almost compete for who can raise/pvp tool someone up first and the healer RPing the proper care and attention of the fallen character be damned.
That said, many other players got into the spirit of the event and allowed their characters to feel the hurts of their bouts and were suitably happy to be tended to properly by a trained medic
I may expand on these thought in a dedicated post and will not open that flood gate here!
8.) Honestly I'm not a fan of mechanical Player vs Player in a role play setting, and again I won't go into the deeper reasoning why here as it is a complicated and emotive (aka triggering) subject and no doubt would take over the thread. I expect many posts have flam...discussed the topic at length in any case
8a.) I was pondering the aftermath of the stuff that happened after the tournament ended and have to ask, why is death basically meaningless here and are there any plans to make wounds and injuries have more mechanical substance to give RP meaning to them (and the healers who dedicate themselves to the subject)? If anyone would care to PM on this rather than tangent this thread I would be grateful.
All in all I really enjoyed myself and got lots of food for thought on future DC requests (an actual placeable field hospital!) and some RP enterprises and paths to tread in coming days.
So thank you TormakSaber!

Generally death has meaning but this was an ic death-match so people went in expecting it.
as to other deaths, well, RP it how you want to. if it's staying dead until found it's staying dead. if it's a perma-scar it's a perma scar. lost limb, etc. RP it how you feel is appropriate to the situation.
at the same time forcing penalties on a half dozen people that got wiped because one insane person tossed a hellball is kinda dumb.
Definitely enjoyed it, good on you for running it.
2: I think it was fair enough. Largely we had SDs and mages around. Since a mage won the fight, I think that the rules were plenty kind to mages. Clerics with haven can buff up how they like, too, without issue.
3: It's probably the most neutral arena you can get. West Cordor given it's past is likely going to scare some off. Tarkuul's arena would be a definite evil slant, Kohl could use the keep grounds but that field is really small, plus very restricted. Then again, you can't ever expect any event to be completely 100% neutral. Given the setting, ulterior motives of tournament hosts are expected, and usually they're right. And some PCs may simply not be interested in that kind of thing, even if they are fighters.
4: When I was having Kurchin run stuff in the Triumvir, he'd gotten people to make nice job system items as prizes for people when he was running art shows. Usually amulets or rings with elongated descriptions. Since the job system stuff doesn't have a lot of mechanical value, well, it was fitting for art competitions. It's less so for the fighty types, and handing out epic loot is definitely tough since it's hard to get.
Side note: Sometimes I wish I had the energy (or Kurchin the IC motives) to keep doing that.
5: I've seen team tourneys work for some of the West Cordor arena events. Generally it's best to announce beforehand, I think. 1v1 is easiest but a team of 3 shouldn't be that hard. They once had a 2v2v2v2.
6: It was fine with me, anyways. Always helps if the fighter brings buddies to chat with while the other fights are going, I'd say.
8: Erm, PvP is fine, really. Usually I find that arena PvP is where you have the least amount of PvP drama, in my experience.
1: It was alright. I enjoyed seeing the fights. Played the man who entered a cat into the fight, a level 14 cat of course because I like to be sporting towards lower levels. Also a merchant on the side.
2: The main base of the participants was level 30's, and it was perhaps 'too' obvious that there was no hope for certain entrants. Maybe pit the low levels against low levels "if they are available to match". No need to break the format, just have a helping hand in the match pairings.
3: Resting zone was handy for that one bug that came up as well as letting fights be at 100%.
4: Grand prize was grand. The rest was forgetable. Position based trophies would be good keepsakes if only as memorabelia.
5: The room needed for even a 1v1 was rather large and hard to observe.
6: Sure, got disqualified but sure.
7: Not going to sell 'real' goods at a place where a reset eats any chance at a display. I believe it supported minor good sales like food or consumables. Wand making and scrolls should fall into a similar category of sellable.
8: It's a big event, it will always attract the crowd if only because there is a density of players. If there's a DM supporting the event you can be sure that players will show up - as the odds of finding content elsewhere is diminished (consider the chance "Trolls" will invade X during the event?) Who knows if it'll be popular the next time or the time after (maybe a regular schedule will kill the attendance), if it remains as popular as this time then don't expect "encounter style plot" at scheduled times, I guess that means a slowdown of plot overall too.
1. As a spectator and merchant, I really thought the overall experience and atmosphere was true to a tournament that brought with it such a broad spectrum of contenders and audience. The location was large enough for all the cliques to gather in their own corner and still get a good view of the fight and be within earshot of the insults from opposing cliques. Betting didn't work out too well for me, with my only bet being unmatched (luckily, because I would have lost gold!), and this might have been that I was too far out of reading range to people on the other side of the arena.
3. It wasn't immediately clear where the best place to set up my "stall" (carpet) was as I arrived a little earlier than most and wasn't sure where people would gather as the area was quite large, but once I moved in to the inner area, I found a good spot.
7. The announcements were well timed and offered good opportunity for IC response (Knowing when to get off my stool to go ringside to support the only competing dwarf!). I would have liked to see some more merchants peddling useless stuff, like handkerchiefs for spectators to dab in the bloodstained arena floor as a souvenir of the event, and just to offer a little more interaction with the crowd and for some opposition to the other merchant(s).
8. It was great to see some controlled PVP, and PVP in general. A public PVP tournament like this really allows some of the bigger names on the server to step forward and flex their egos and show off the thing that really matters at an OOC level.. their builds. As a spectator, I found it really entertaining and a great opportunity to see just how impressive some of those builds were and could appreciate the time and investment that went in to them (and how I would try and survive against them). I want to thank Bethany for her efforts to tend to the wounds of the competing players, it made total sense to have a triage tent set up and for players to be peeled off of the arena floor and seen to at the end of each bout (no different to a boxer going to his corner at the end of each round, or his team rushing in to the ring after a KO), I agree completely with his/her points made too (even if they did spike the wine ).
Thanks for hosting it Tormak!

1- I enjoyed the event as Lavim, the hin with the glasses that was the most impartial cheerer ever (:p). I could have participated with that character, but he would have forfeitted the moment he'd been against a female character - so I decided to give my entry fee instead. I took Lavim there because I could not bring my main there (Saya) as she avoids negative energy as much as possible (and people beating each others, with all sort of bad/good individuals might not be the most positive places there is).
2- I think you gave enough chances for people to join, but what was the entry fee again? I recall it was pretty expensive? High level characters don't really care about money, but I bet there are lower level characters that could have entered if it wasn't that they knew they would lose and that the entry fee will be wasted cash.
3- Great location.
4- I echo what has been said in that the first prize was great, the others weren't so much. If Saya were to host such a tournament, she would give a chance for people to vote on ridiculous things (like who went in with the funniest costume, etc.) As for prizes? Hard to say... I think if you invoke the power of DMship (:P) having one of the winners have a free Deity Ring of their choice could be nice? I feel like money is just... meh, as that prize is only really good to characters that can't realistically compete in said event!
5- Again, it's a matter of who is hosting the tournament. There is no mistake Saya would be hosting a totally different tournament if such was something she sought to do. She would throw curveball all over the place, like the opponent having to roll a dice and then be stuck with handicaps (you have to use X weapon type only) OR have the spectators vote on such handicaps. I think the simplest kind of tournament was how you did it. It is easier to deal with, and effective. Did that fit your character? I think that was fine the way you did it, less complicated.
6- N/A
7- If this becomes a recurring event then I think the betting might become expected / advertized / planned --- by the players. You shouldn't have to worry about it I think, if enough interest is there, it will probably work itself out without your intervention.
8- Any lame "strategy" that ruins the actual spectator enjoyment should be frowned upon and addressed.. I thought timestop should -not- have ever been allowed, neither should darkness be, nor should hide in plain side be openly allowed. There should be limit on some abilities, in my opinion. As a promotor, your character should not be happy about having a fight be completely unwatchable due to some random abilities spammed that cover one's sight. His goal should be to make money (maybe ) and / or have the spectators entertained. I know personally I liked the event, but lost interest in fights that spammed hide in plain side and timestop.
The same should apply with healing potions... there could be a limit on the number of pots you can use in the fight. It doesn't make the fight "more exciting", it makes it unecessarily longer and lame. You basically watch a dude/dudette run around hiding in the nowhere and then drink potions and go back in fight without a care in the world for wounds that should matter / tire your character down.
That's my opinion!
Thanks for the event though, I did have fun overral!
1. Yes. My character was a spectator during the event and took part in a handful of bets.
2. Mixed bag. I’m biased because my character is a caster, but the use of Heal potions during tournaments like this is usually a no-no because it can drag out fights between melee characters and negate all of the most powerful damage dealing spells mages have available due to the limited amount of times they can be used. The three buff rule is common in Amia for duels between mages because it allows for some preparation without getting in all of the must-have buffs up front.
3. In my opinion, the monastery is the best place for these events. The smaller arena in West Cordor is too cramped for the common caster and gives melee characters an unfair advantage. I’ve seen caster vs caster tournaments screwed up by those small arenas because the whole thing was cramped with EDK summons or a dragon shifter.
4. I don’t have an opinion on this.
5. I liked the double elimination thing.
6. N/A
7. I thought it was handled well. If you use the monastery next time, it might be a good idea to have a designated section or side of the arena for the spectators. That way they can hear bets being called out and minimize the damage done by bigger spells or summon breath weapons.
8. This next thing is only related to the event because the duel/explosion happened immediately after the event was over and the organizers were involved in the aftermath, so it’s more of a general suggestion for dealing with arena PvP. I think it should be made more clear that in the Lemur Monastery, Western Cordor PvP arena, or any IC arena on the server in general, spectators aren’t usually outright murdered by spell blasts they’re too close to.
Wounded? Sure. But obliterated and/or killed in such a way that might require IC authorities? Probably not.
If two mages are having a duel in an arena and one drops a hellball on his opponent… the opponent is usually considered ‘knocked out’ or ‘knocked down’ because it’s PvP in an arena. We understand that Wails and Fingers of Death aren’t actually murdering people when they’re used in an arena setting when the ‘save or die’ effect is in the spell description. I don't see why AOE damage spells should be treated any differently in that setting.
Going from ‘wounded 5 spectators during a mage duel’ to ‘killed 5 spectators during a mage duel and now your character shifts 10 points toward Evil’ is a pretty massive jump. Characters can react IC to being hurt as a spectator in what ever way it makes IC sense for them to, but I think it’s kinda crappy to throw out the ‘all these people were murdered!’ thing IC when the character the two epic spells actually landed on wasn’t even IC killed.

If every person had been completely immune to the hellball, the hosts' IC reaction would have been identical, FWIW.

The IC reaction is no biggie. I'm fine with a character reacting violently to just about anything if that's what the character would do. I just think tossing murder on a character IC in that situation is kinda crappy.

No one had a problem going 10 on 1 against HoJo for defending himself.
Venue likely to be the same, rules likely to be the same outside of the new 'spectator spacing' rule.
IC post to come soon.
ed: PS - because I feel like this is something really important I need to state, and want to do so publically with no malice at all whatsoever: If Krin the character shows up to the event, I am declaring every intention right now to essentially click hostile and attack him, and any bodyguards and security at the event will be instructed to do the same. This declaration will also be made IC but please consider this your PvP warning if you are detected and discovered at the event.

OOC exploits are immediate DQs, and I will ban the player from future tournaments as well as passing the word to DMs. I take it very seriously.
Traps would count as one of your pre fight buffs, but if your traps cause a stalemate because the other fighter won't engage you on your traps while you stand there, you take a fight loss because it was your actions that caused the stalemate.

What if you can actually pull off trapping mid combat? I know it's rare but I know at least two guys that good.
Then you're fine. Don't hurt spectators. That said: If your traps cause a stalemate because you set 5 epic electrics and you stand there while your opponent goes "i'm not killing myself", then it's on you.

i'd just like to reinforce here that despite most aoe spells essentially being not castable due to crowd harm, a caster won the last tourney.
and again, if you are a wizman who expects to use bigass aoe spells, tell everyone BEFORE your three buff phase so people can move the fuck back if they so choose.

The IC reply from Krin the character is being interpreted as a waiving of the one warning her would otherwise get. Expect to be "kill on sight" if you show up and are detected.

I notice there aren't many signups yet for the tournament, and not much in the way of "I plan to be there" from people.
Is this IC? If so, that's fine - and to some degree is already being handled.
Is this OOC? If so, then please help me - is the time and date bad? Maybe doing it on a friday night might not be the best. One player indicated that so far in the Doodle. If people are more available on a Saturday night, we can push it back a week so more people can show. If not, is there something else? I don't know how many people will show. Is the prize "bad"? To some degree, i'm all too aware that what's being offered probably just isn't as mechanically interesting to people as what turned out to be a coupon for, essentially, a DC item. As said before, this was never my intention with the event, and the Djinn was only sought out because I couldn't find other interested PCs until recently.
Just looking for some assistance in running what will hopefully be a fun event for all attendees.

Sorry bro, I'm intending to come on Maurice, but I'm also not sure about continuing the character due to todays OOC miss-hap. I do hope people do come for this, though. PvP tournaments are an amazing source of RP for the server as a whole to come together and RP with characters they wouldn't otherwise RP with. Makes for awesome RP.
I would attend but I can't guarantee I'll be there. Since at the times of the tourney, I will be at work, if I have my laptop, my connection will be very unstable for a large-scale event.

I don't have any intent on joining the fight but I intend to show up to champion the effort. I can probably make whatever time its set for cause my time is free for a few weeks. That's why I haven't RSVP'd or anything.
Did you want us to RSVP in if we weren't actually competing? Rico will be there for the peanut gallery, but a 20 SD is hardly a fight worth watching haha.

Concerning me? It was a shit fest last time. The only character I have who wold go there is a lvl 15 tempus cleric and Jron, my fucked up palemaster bard on lvl 20. Non fits that lvl 30 max which I think most be at it.
Did you want us to RSVP in if we weren't actually competing? Rico will be there for the peanut gallery, but a 20 SD is hardly a fight worth watching haha.
No RSVP needed if you're not fighting, I just noticed a distinctly lower number of immediate interest from fighters this time, so I wanted to make sure everything was OK. No fun if I get 30 spectators and 0 fighters.

Due to RL studies atm I cant make a commitment to make it.Although if I do somehow get to be online at the scheduald time of the tourny ill defently join and gladly pay the entry fee
Also I really enjoyd the last event and think it was a refreshing addition to the server. I would however want to request a new format to be added to the tournament which I think people would really enjoy! 2 vs 2 battles! I think holding some matches that can be fought with pairs would be an awesome thing to see! Also I think it will increase the level of balance in the tourny. Instead of having a poor melee face a mage hoplessly, he can choose to have a fellow mage with him and that way even out the odds! It will be nice to see diffrent types of pairs and classes teaming up and stratagizing using each ones advantages to help eachother and it will spice up battles significantly in my opinion! Tell me what you think
