There's teo ways to argue, and they always get mixed up (including here):
OOC all players want to play, without evil its boring
and IC I don't want to do things with evil people.

And, quite honestly, the discussion won't work if people just bring up those two arguments...

Characters like Lucius or HoJo or Gerald are sort of made with an understanding that we won't be able to go to certain events. But that's partially because it's our job to make and generate role play for other people to participate in on evil side. That way we get our fix.

EDIT: Changed the opening word "People" to "Characters" to distinguish in and out of character more adequately. We can and do make alts when we want.

Honestly i'm of a mind that I don't care who turns up to what. So long as everyone enjoys themselves and the IC reasoning behind it is sensible enough, the more the merrier. Then again, I wouldn't say i'm the most active person these days so my opinion might be worth less than the more active folk here.

That's plenty adequate of an opinion to hold if you ask me active or not. Sometimes, however, it really is just an issue of having enemies show up at the event you want to go too or even being branded the enemy of the people who show up.

True enough, yeah. I don't see why though if characters find themselves in that situation, diplomacy IC could be attempted first if the playstyle and personality is taken into account. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, or if the goals between said groups vary differently for the outcome, then there's not much that can be done. Alternatively there could be more focus on mutual/neutral goals, such as Cluckzilla reborn comes and starts laying demon eggs in every city and both sides of the coin fancy some good old possessed omelettes for all.

I just don't think shoving Gerald into situations like "let's go defend the dale" is appropriate personally.

Then that is something that cannot be tweaked or fixed for Gerald. Same goes for Budly or Sylveera for me, they would not run off to rescue Tarkuul from impending doom if they had the one trinket to do so with. But I guess, if there is a certain object Gerald want and the one who attacks the Dale has that item, he would help out Im sure. :?

Yes, players should be welcome to events, but not every character is welcome. The server Player count is low sure, but it's still a lore correct role-play server, and for that to be maintained, everyone (read character) isn't welcome everywhere, or in all DM events. I (read Player) would love to go on the trip to Hades, but Crow's not about to prance in there and get a ticket for that ride, it just doesn't make sense, lore-wise.

Crow has the right of it.

That said... evils can show up to "goodie" events easier than the reverse as has been said. After all, it might be perfectly within their normal behavior to try to cause chaos, disrupt the event, or... help the bad guys even! However, a goodie showing up to an "evil intended" event might get chased off or worse.

I think he means assassins.

And Assassin is actually more evil from the ruthlessness. Assassin is implied a certain lifestyle, basically. Killing for money. And literally every single dirty trick you can think of. And not just dirty in the sense of sneak attack. Dirty as in killing you in your sleep.

Also, this:
Special
The character must kill someone for no other reason than to join the assassins.

So an Assassin is much more: The description even mentions a lack of morals or eithics. And that is one of the things that come with roleplaying your class. You are literally a ruthless, non-caring murder machine. And murder not in the sense of ''I'm going after bandits''. No, the literal murder for hire.
Of course, this doesn't mean you don't have emotions, perhaps a certain code of honor, but in general, you don't care about the lives you take. It's not even really you or them, although that is an easy way for your character to think about it. You are evil, due to the act of using your powers. Think about basic NWN, not the Amia additions. What makes an Assassin different from a rogue? The most glaring difference is Death Attack versus Sneak Attack. In combat, they are both equal. But the Assassin has the bonus of basically having an instakill out of combat. And, in PnP, he does have an insta-kill. He has to actually decide to not do an instakill to just paralyze, by using a non-lethal weapon.

That is why Assassin is evil. Not for knowing how to kill, but knowing how to murder, and using his knowledge.

Negative. Being an "assassin" class and knowing how to kill via class abilities locks you into perma evil forever. The only way to undo this is to "forget" your assassin training and rebuild out of the class.

I don't agree with it but that's the dm stance. As evil is a measurable force, knowing how to kill someone in one strike makes you evil.

All this even if you don't kill for money or take jobs. And ignoring that both pnp and Amia rules allow assassin kills to be ko's

Well, it's just like a ranger not attached to nature at all (like, never was outside): Will NWN allow it? Yes. Is it fitting in lore? Nope.

Doesn't mean Ranger, don't really see how that's the same at all.

I also fail to see how knowing a technique that lets you kill someone or knock them out is different then knowing Finger of Death.

At the same time, you know the cliche traditionalist musician, the person that reaches into musical heritage and draws inspiration from themes and methods used in a careful, organized way? That's just not allowed. The overly strict piano teacher? Not allowed. Want to play a piano but also be lawful? Illegal role play. Preform is bard only and bards can't be lawful. Like music but can't embrace the discord of chaos? Go fuck yourself. Music is not for the organized and you CAN NOT learn preform and be lawful, that's illegal role play.

But I'm willing to admit I'm of a different view here. I think actions, not abilities define who we are, and three dimensional characters don't fit on a rigid 3x3 grid. I don't see why some classes, some non divine classes, are forced into roles here.

Lvls, classes and such is a flawed system in this regard when we move it out of the classic dungeon crawl RPG foam and shape. Alignment is also a system based on from what I understand the dieties and the planes who have a plane for all weird things. But that might also be that they are based on the alignment system to push the legitimicy of the alignment system.

It's taken me a while to reply to this partly because I'm up to my furry nips in work and partly because it's giving me an incredible headache behind my eye.

Commie, you play a character that not only summons undead while he's off hunting but did it in front of a silverkin, a paladin, and a blue-eye monk an in a situation where his life was not in imminent danger. If these three characters would prefer not to have him around when they are off doing something it shouldn't come as a surprise to you. They shouldn't just allow it because that character's a person, same as them. He violated the rules of the society to which they belong and should be ostracized for his transgressions.

As to your other argument it's silly on its face. The difference between an assassin and anybody else lies not just in the ability to use certain underhanded tactics but in their willingness to do so. Anybody *can* stab their enemy in the head while they're asleep but not everybody *will.*

There's a joke among baseball umpires that a good ump never ejects anybody. It's not that ejections don't happen but rather that the players and coaches eject themselves and the umpire only confirms their desire to no longer participate in the day's activities. Much the same a good group isn't expelling someone that summons the dead as his playthings or hellballs a shindig in Wharftown but instead is simply confirming their desire to no longer interact with polite society.

Whether he's evil or not is inconsequential in that particular instance. If he willingly summons undead as his minions and was stupid enough to do it in front of three holy rollers he probably shouldn't be surprised if they don't want him around when it's time to vanquish a threat or if they assume that he's either evil himself or willing to turn on them if it's convenient. The point is that your actions have consequences and if you want to take part in all the events you can perhaps not doing things that will make you persona non grata with a large portion of the would-be heroes is wise.

its not inconsequential. it's a perfect demonstration of how dumb the alignment system is.

also why are you still holding onto that? it was like 6 months ago at least. nobody cared then, less care now. the specific incident you're mentioning doesn't matter and detracts from the issue.

Why hold on to it? Because consequences arise from actions long after you hope they would end. That's how life works. If you don't want people to not like you for what you do try not doing stuff that people dislike. If my neighbor poops in my yard during a garden party he shouldn't be surprised if I don't invite him to the next one.

what you're saying is a non-issue. literally nobody but your character specifically has had issue with him for that, at all, i don't know why you're holding onto it, or bringing it up here and now, it serves no purpose.

besides, im not the one that left that day. I just showed up and you left all on your own after like one line of dialogue, and then the people that didn't leave with you, we did the rest of the dungeon, like 4 of us iirc.

You can call it a non-issue all you like but that's just to make it convenient for yourself. More than one person had problems with your character's actions and made it a point to bring it up on more than one occasion including when you weren't there. You misremember the incident. Torsten and Sammi took off at the same time, then our rather slow monk friend afterward. Since then others have had an issue with it but that's not the point. I can't control what other players do and if they are willing to let their goody-gooder hang out with someone that summons the undead that's on them. I was again using an example. Now say it was just the four of us that showed up to an area for a plot and we all refused to work with your character that knowingly performed acts of which we would disapprove. Then you'd piss and moan that we didn't work with you and make you feel welcome to take part. Your entire argument since the beginning of this is that every other character should be willing to change themselves in order to be more inclusive of those they see as morally reprehensible.

Someone like HoJo at least understood that what he was doing was going to make people not want to have him around with them. He was a danger to those around him. If you want to be welcomed with open arms you should go along to get along. This is why it is a good idea to allow for situations where those that will not knowingly work with evil in any way should have an opportunity to not have to do so. You can still have events where everyone may come as they are but to say that everyone must accept everyone else if they want to take part simply means that people that have characters that would not do that are no longer welcome to take part in anything. It would better suit everyone if there was a little for ethos A, a little for ethos B, and even more for those that don't see the two as mutually exclusive.

No I wouldn't, and no I wasn't. I just said that I disagreed with you in a thread called 'server-wide plots' that those events should NOT focus on a specific alignment group.

To which you seemed to be in disagreement by saying;

Quote:
While it can be fun roleplay it needn't be forced every single time. By making everything open to everyone you only penalize those that play stalwart good characters since the evil ones generally won't eschew working with the good as long as there's something in it for them.

and

Quote:
By forced I mean the fact that if you want to participate in the event you have to work with the evil guy. Your only choices in the matter are to work with him, force him out, or leave. Since leaving means you can no longer take part it sucks for you. Since forcing him out means he can't take part it sucks for him. Since working with him goes against what you believe in it sucks for your character.

and

Quote:
"Well, alright, Wifekiller Evilpants may have slaughtered every woman and child in a village while their husbands were off defending against an invasion of blob monsters but he's here to help us now against this threat so I guess that's we'd better let him in. Oh, and there's Jeffy the Necromonger! Let's have him join in, too!"

Piss on that.

And then brought up a specific instance where I walked into you doing a dungeon run and left before I could type a single word and legit didn't even know who was there because you took off so fast. Like nobody even pvp flagged there was no conflict no event I just opened a door, you were there, and you just spazed out and left.

So

1. Relax.

2. Understand that good and evil both exist and neither should be shunted from events. The presence of the opposite spectrum at things presents opportunities not restrictions.

No. We left after making our complaints known as to your walking in there with an undead in front of someone with very obvious silver wings. There was more than ample opportunity to back out but you didn't so we left because the only two choices would be to leave or to beat Kilmar down. We did you that favor.

And again, what you're saying here is that everybody must acquiesce to that which they find abhorrent if they wish to contribute. That works out well for you and anybody that wants to play evil but puts those that have a moral problem with serving with them in a terrible position. Were you to play, say, a Winyan would you willingly stand there back to back with a Llothite that would otherwise want you dead? A paladin standing with a palemaster? Maybe you would. Maybe your character doesn't care who they make allies but to say that someone that does make that distinction should either cope with it or not take part means that you're not arguing for inclusivity for all but for yourself.

We could have had some fun or a conversation or any dialogue at all but you just left. Ergo no roleplay took place because you just left.

Frankly I would have preferred your pally just insta-flag and beat that undead down, as opposed to leaving, because it would have showed you have some conviction.

I cant speak for everyone but I play for real. I 100% embrace consequences. I 100% submit to 'being in jail' rp.

What kind of events? I cannot imagine a "typical" situation in which a paladin would cooperate with a necromancer. Period. If such situation would occur, I'd see the paladin fall instantly and a necromancer pat on the back for making the paladin fall.

I agree that having both good and evil on the chessboard provides opportunities for RP. I daresay for the best RP - however, in 99.99% possible scenarios having both sides on the same field would resolve in a conflict, and quite often in a bloodshed.

Thus - you cannot force anyone to accept an evil character in the goodly event and vice versa. And you cannot take it personally that your character is shunned away from a juicy plot because of that as well.

I too would love to see some stuff in Kohlingen with Eddie, but I cannot - because Eddie is an evil asshole and the most people around know it. On the other side, I'd loved to see a major plot in Tarkuul, run by Nihi back then, when I was playing Daegan - alas, Daegan was a strict Helmite paladin, so the only visit he'd pay to Tarkuul would be with an axe in his hand.

Make a neutral character if you want to be everywhere and see everything. And by neutral I don't mean "have neutral in your character sheet", I mean don't cause troubles with undead around goodly guys and don't play hollier than thou around bad guys. You gotta be loved by all if you wanna be a part of it all - and that's one hell of a work.

An island wide food shortage would be a good event everyone could participate in.

An invading military force setting up a staging area on sandy beach would be good.

Any kind of evil dragon exerting influence/control on the local area would be interesting.

An internal regime change in Wharftown or Kohl or Cordor or Winya allowing for a new leader with 'ideas' would also be fun.
