Okay, so these are all my personal opinions! They are in no way official Amia rules, the opinions/declaration of the DM team, and as such should not be treated as Amian law! Now that I've gotten my disclaimer out of the way....

Maryns Guide to the Properly RP’ed Child Characters

1. When you play a child, take into account how it effects other people’s roleplay. Other people’s enjoyment should always be your number one concern, past your own enjoyment.
Example: An adult character is roleplaying with a few others, and a child character who is supposed to be their son or daughter. OOC’ly, the adults player would like nothing better to do then to run off and kill something in the abyss with said group. Make an IC excuse for them to run off and have their fun, and change characters. Maybe your child got left with a babysitter. Don’t hamper other people’s roleplay for the sake of IC’ness. It is irrelevant, IC’ly that someone should have stayed behind to watch the child.

2. Have a solid background of where your child came from, and where they are going. So they are an orphan in Cordor? Okay! Don’t get pissy when someone tries to drag them off to the orphanage. That’s what its there for IC’ly! Roleplay accordingly.

3. The biggest complaint heard of child characters, is too many levels. Keep them down to level two or three at the most. Yes, I understand you can probably make a very interesting story as to just why your level thirty child is the way they are… I’m sorry, no one cares. It’s only fun for you. Children are children for a reason. If you want to play an epic prodigy, I suggest playing Baldur’s Gate single player.

4. If you are playing the child of other people’s characters, avoid logging in when they are not around. If your character sneaks out from home, try to avoid any overly dramatic conflicts such as kidnapping, murder, etc. without the ooc consent of all involved. Remember, you are effecting the parent characters roleplay directly, and they may not be interested in such roleplay. Refer back to rule number one, FUN FOR ALL!

5. I understand your child character might be a rebellious little brat. That’s okay, I’m all for free thinking, and making your character unique! Don’t make people feel like theyre babysitting ooc’ly. It ruins the enjoyment of the game for them, and can make them want to avoid your characters entirely. Try to keep it balanced, and don’t overdo it.

6. Please, please, please, for the love of all that is holy, if you are going to play a child character, make it very clear in your description that your character is a child, and not a hin. The last thing any player of a hin character wants to do, is find out they were ICly flirting with a child, or for some adventurer to find out mid-dungeon crawl that they brought a 6 year old along.

7. Stay in character, and have fun.

Risky subject indeed, and rather good advice, although I'd still go with "Don't" as the first rule of child chars, but I, and just about everyone, can live with it if say, played according to her guide.

I realize this is rather short, but I also think of you take all of these suggestions into consideration, your playing time as a child character will go a lot smoother. . . .

I don't see how this topic will cause flame posts to pop up. People only hate child characters because of those people who have abused the system. There are actually quite a few people on the server that I know play children very well. But because of those n00bs who wanted to act like asses and run around Cordor giving people a headache OOCly with their senseless roleplay, then everyone will automatically hate anyone who plays children.
It's the same with people who play Drow characters. All it takes is one or two people to act like an ass for everyone to think that's how all Drow players are.

Good points, very well said, and politely said too. =]

But if you play on Amia, you will see people who have not read this and are running around, not recieving the advice.. I am not naming names and I am not pointing the finger, but you will experience it at least once.

Then again, wheeee

Aww its a baby!
Look what the result of us bonking made!

Isn't it cute?

Rras: Can I eat it?
Xyrkha: ... Its stinky.
Ramla: Give it to the SCALED ONE!
Ry'll: Eww? Its ugly.

Its actually quite.. annoying. I'm an evil woman. And I don't like babies, Real or fantasy.

I expect a child to have 6 in every physical stat, at least, the exception of which is maybe.. -maaybe- dex. The only thing I could ever see as a child being beyond level 1 in power. Is a Sorceror, or a 'Chosen' of a God.

Now, mind you I don't mind Mid/late teens PC's those are great and fine and understandable. I had a 'Child' version of Xyrkha, but she only made...4 or 5.. appearances. In her 'breaks' from school. Untill she was in her teens and I started playing a 'mature' version of her. Before that. She didn't adventure. Didn't leave Cordor. And I played her for maybe a total of 3 hours.

I figure it like this. If that kid hucks hell-balls... there is absolutely no reason to hold back on the child, nor is there a reason to coddle it.

Once a kid goes killing for sport/training/at all.... you pretty much remove the innocence of child-hood.

Sound advice - theres a lot I could add to it, but I wont - just complicates things.

One thing to say though, that if you are wanting to go killing, and find yourself "babysitting" then simply tell the child you have togo - and then do. As players we can understand that. Tom will always say "ok see you later then" or something similar, or will head home etc...

Notice how I underlined a couple of words. I did that because it also applies to any sort of "drama RP" with adult characters too. Of course, such a topic was already covered on a couple of threads... and I am going Off Topic now. :P

Anyway, pretty much the way I expect a child to be played, if THEY ABSOLUTELY TOTALLY INEXORABLY ~REALLY~ HAVE to come to life at Amia. ^-^;

EDIT: Typos.

I know how horrible it is for people seeing people playing uber children. When I started here as a unexperienced player I made one myself and I am sure I made many people cringe until Alicera grew up, even if others liked the roleplay, and now I wouldnt ever make one like that again.

However, if one looks at medeval times or even the 18th century, children at the age of 10-14 even served in wars. Lieutenants on ships were mostly what we call children now a days. I think if such were roleplayed nicely and not overly powerful, there could be great roleplay comming from it. Of course those children came from rich and noble familys, and were not orphans.

This is going to sound ... Very odd coming from me, as I have a level 23 Child Character...

But, I love the post, and the advice, and I hope everyone strives to follow the origional poster's rules of Child Characters.

... But I will also state -why- I have a level 23 Child Character:

When I created the little girl some of you know as Merium, I was more or less returning after a while's break and found gold... Reasonably difficult to get (Mostly because 99% of the time I was RPing ... Imagine the difficulty of gold finding in that short while hunting...)

Now, because of -MY- experience with trying to get gold, I thought, "I -really- don't want to beg for gold, or take from other people who might, in fact, actually need it for something else... I also know I'll want things for her, like... A new outfit now and then, or an item to RP with on occasion."

Gold is impossible to get unless you hunt or beg. Her background story implies that her parents were killed by Undead, she was left with an unhealing curse (wound across her stomach, which is... Now a broken curse), and the person taking care of her in Amia didn't really... Take care of her, but rather made her fend for herself, most of the time.

MOST of this ... In fact, I think all of it, was pretty much left out of my RP. Perhaps two people actually know her background story ICly. This is because of the 'Oh, Woe is Me, My Parents are Dead and I'm Poor... Never Had Anyone to Care About Me' theme. It's overrated, far too popular and ... Well, frankly, I wanted to make her the closest thing to an optimist as I could.

Before she left (About... Three? Four? Five? Months ago, RL time) to the Mainland, she was growing more and more superior in her spellcasting and, because of the Shadowflames, was gaining more control over them. Mind you, she can't cast a Hellball and she's incapable of using any... "If I hit you one time, you're going to fall in the dirt" spells (Such as Weird, Wail, ETC).

Before she left she was nine years old. Since then, I've aged her to eleven... Her age-time is quite a bit slower than other people's, and the reason for it is that, I don't -intend- for her to ever... Fully... Grow up.

Since her return to Amia, she's lost all 'want' to cast spells. I sometimes hunt in very rarely to never hunted areas for the sake of gold (Because it seems rather sickening to me, a level 23 begging for gold, child or not).

To be entirely honest, no-one now would know she was level 23 (As most of the characters from back then are either gone now or don't remember her) if they didn't metagame the Challenge Rating in her description.

Instead, I get Tells, "How old is she?" ... "Why is she Impossible to me?" ... Not a spell on her. Not a single buff, no offensive spells casted, just out of nowhere.

... I play her for the sake of RP. She's a little girl character in public. Public being... Anywhere -but- the Shadowflame Manor, where she still 'ICly Casts' on occasion to keep herself under control and in practice.

I didn't create her to make her... "Overpowering" to adult characters so I could kick their arses and sit back, laughing at them when they died... In fact, one hit from anything normally kills her, or gets close (Level 23 with about 70 HP, maximum). I didn't level her to be able to say, "I'm able to knock you out whenever I feel like it."

If there would be an alternate way of getting gold, from NPCs, as an example, I would be all for using that system instead of hunting. For most of my characters, in fact. But, since there is no such system, and I don't want to beg, I will continue leveling them.

Not to say she's entirely useless in all other respects... She watched and learned a few things from other characters she spent time around, too. For instance, she learned how to craft items. From three Shadowflames she learned new spells and also how to control them, to some degree. She still has that silly little habit of hurting herself when casting AoE spells ... Even if only on rare occasions, it still happens. She has no Focus Feats, and... If I recall correctly, no Penetration Feats... *ponders that thought*

And I do have a question about the... "All stats should be 6 except -MAYBE- Dexterity" comment ...

Despite the fact that Charisma is origionally based on leadership and whatnot, it seems like a common occurance and understanding that Charisma has also taken the part of attractiveness. In Amia, at least.

That would imply that a child would likely have a decent Charisma Modifier, wouldn't it?

... Now that I'm done defining my reasonings for creating a character and... Ultimately asking perhaps the dumbest question imaginable due to lack of sleep ... I believe I'll be going to bed now. 'Night all.

*Yawns*

EDIT:

Oh! Right, and if anyone else feels the way I do about the whole... Gold ordeal... AND is playing a Child Character, and the gold is -FOR- the Child Character... Eh... Merium doesn't mind sharing now and again. She's a friendly girl. *nods*

Just playing devil's advocate, not trying to be an arse but.. Whatever could you need that kind of gold for that it took you soloing to level 23? If I never bought the abyss wizard adventuring gear, or scrolls (which weren't needed, but just wanted..) and soloed. (Which I did alot of soloing on Xy), at 20 she would have had 3,000,000 gold.

You can make a decent amount of money never having to leave Cordor either.

Charisma is a combination of: Physical Attractiveness, Self-Confidence, and Personal strength.

Children cry if they bump their knee. Scrape their knee, throw tantrums. Have next to no resistance to temptation, and to me, are physically unattractive. They are renownly known for lacking self-confidence in the face of true adversity. A child can be cute. But never attractive to me. I am not a pedo, or a lolli fan. I don't think a child can have high charisma. Not over 10 anyways.

Level 23 for the sake of gold doesnt really fly with me. . . . there are dozens of people willing to assist with the cost of making custom outfits and such. . . but. . . .*shrug* I digress. There are no official rules on Amia for this, so. . . do what you want. My guide is merely a suggestion.

Agreed.

I just bumped it so people would still reference to it every once in a while. I am assuming that it won't be stickied, because it's not a staff developed guide (and people hardly read stickies anyway), it's a friendly player guide, and a good one.

Didn't want a good topic like this to be forgotten.

Ironically she has a totally of ... I think twenty gold.

... But at any rate...

I do quite a bit of RP that requires gold ... For... Whatever reason.

And "Never leaving Cordor to get Gold" is the same thing as saying "You can Beg for it."

At any rate, as I said, you'll likely never see her with any spells around her unless you happen to manage to see her in the middle of one of her rather rare hunts in those places that are rarely to never hunted in. The only other occasion (Which I actually do try to eliminate by just standing around for a while after I'm done) is if I ported to town just after a hunt. Even then, I run directly to an Arena to pull the buffs off of her and keep her under Invis (Of course this doesn't help much against the multi-True Sight/See Invisibility characters in Cordor).

She also happens to be rather well generous in the things she does... As I said, she's a nice kid. *shrugs*

I'm going to pull her back from her... Eh, retirement, I think... Start RPing her more often again and such.

But, overall:

I agree with the ideas of the origional poster... Not so much the rest of them who decide 'Child Characters Don't Belong'. Not to say that I would like to see EVERYONE playing a child character, or even HALF the people (As most that have already tried have royally butchered the RP), but! They can be fun, if played correctly. :)

... Just ignore her level factor. Realllllly, it isn't that hard unless she casts. *nods* ... and she won't. ;)

Thats not true. And I'll stand by it not being true simply being a PC merchant.

... Merchants definitely require goods to sell. And asking for items is nearly the same thing as asking for gold. Making things (Such as crafting) requires gold, and the knowledge of how to do it.

Well... Maybe they're just trying to say that kids shouldn't have the money to do things like that on their own. They're -kids-. You're supposed to spoil them, not get owned when they craft things better than you can. >.>

She doesn't have anything. *shrugs* She wears an outfit her formerly adoptive mother made her, which only costed 1 gold, she has about ... Ten different dresses and/or outfits. Only two of them do anything. One's to up her crafting, the other has I think 2 AC added to it.

... Regardless, part of her story was that her parent's friend gave her gold to live on. I used that as a chance to get gold for her.

... Bit like I did with Sylvia, but she's 17 with the mentality of a seven-year-old. Despite that, she's level 12 with around 700,000 gold.

EDIT:

And I don't trust the dye merchants, so I use the 500 gold per dye to make sure I get what I want. >.>

Some other additional suggestions for your list...

1. If you're playing a child character, you're not allowed out of your house after dark. None of this standing around the fountains chit-chatting about your favorite dolly or playing tag with the merchants at 3 am.

Nor will saying you're an orphan cut it. Expect that some guard would inquire as to why a 7 year old is skipping around town after dark.

All of which would limit your RP to daylight hours. When the sun goes down - you log off and go home.

2. If you're playing a child, you cannot leave Cordor alone. No wandering around the countryside unattended for little kiddies. For one, you'd never find your way home alive. For another, the kobolds would tear you apart as soon as you set foot outside. If you did leave the city alone - I would expect to see your parents brought to trial as incompetent - and you placed in foster care.

It would make common sense - that a child MUST be accompanied by an adult outside the city limits AT ALL TIMES.

In fact, the child probably should be accompanied by a relative whenever you are outside of a certain range of your home. Otherwise you're leaving the child prey to all sorts of dangers. (Wouldn't want to see your character on the side of a milk cartoon.)

3. If you're playing a child, you are NOT allowed to carry weapons. Wouldn't want you to slice your fingers off or get burnt with that flaming warhammer.

4. If you're playing a child, you are NOT allowed to use magic beyond maybe 1st level spells. Yeah, yeah, I've seen Harry Potter, but the idea of an 8 year old throwing fireballs just seems absurd.

I don't care what the kids IQ is, a immature child is not going to understand the complexities of the weave beyond very simple spells.

* * *

That all said, as a parent, and I love my son above all others... I could never see myself playing a child character. Not sure why, but something about even the idea of it just rubs me the wrong way.

Maybe it's the thought that as a parent, I feel extremely protective of my child, and never want to see them put into harm's way.

Too, even though I know we live in a violent world, the idea of giving a child a sword and saying, "Here Johnny, go outside and slay some minotaurs," just strikes me as horribly wrong.

... Ew. Ew. Ew. EWWWW.

... I'd understand this rule if the IGT (In-Game Time) was the same as RL time... But two minutes is one hour. That would be a LOT of sitting around and waiting for the sun to come back up before you could RP again... Particularily if you're me and don't like switching when the server's full, which... It almost always is ... So you wouldn't log out, hope you could get back in, and then switch again when the sun comes back up. It'd be a waste of time.

... But, because the IGT is the way it is, I don't agree with that rule.

In defense of child sorcerors, Sorcerors often manifest arund the age of 12-13, and IQ, intelligence, and general "booksmart" aptitude has absolutely nothing to do with how they manipulate the Weave.

Mind, I never said I *liked* it.

I just said it's possible and logical insofar as FR and the Weave and Sorcerors go.

Uh - stuff like "don't be out after dark" or "the guard might wonder what you are doing out late" - this game is not set in the 21st century, people. Nor even the 20th. Things were not the same in the rough time period that FR is set in, as how they are now.

Schooling was frequently done at home, if at all. Children were often set to work at the earliest age they were capable of working at. Children who were not working to help support their family, were frequently free to run around and do whatever the heck they wanted. And if they were "caught" out late, the only thing they'd likely get would be a right-good whooping from their fathers, at worst.

Don't mix your own biases with the idea of the time period FR is supposed to be set in. They do not fit. As has been pointed out, young teens were often officers on naval ships, or soldiers in wars. I'd wager there's a fair number of "kids" from that era that could whoop most folks who play this game in even a simple fistfight, let alone a swordfight.

How about setting aside biases and automatic negativity, and actually interacting with people, before judging them. Otherwise, as has also been pointed out, you are also saying that it's okay to lump all strong builds as "non-roleplaying powergamers", all drow as "troublemakers", all SD's as "metagamers", etc etc etc.

I played a "child" pc of a sort, as my main character, for quite a while. And I always found it amusing when some level 3 idiot sent me a tell bitching about my child pc who could kick their ass in a fight, just because they clicked the bio and saw the CR. Nevermind that there was a background involved that you couldn't know unless you rp'd with me, and nevermind that I'd NEVER gotten into pvp, and nevermind that if I ever DID get into pvp, I'd have allowed for her to lose if the rp involved suited it. And nevermind that my child pc is the one on which I got all the DC's I ever earned prior to being asked to join the DM team, and nevermind that it was because of how I played that character that I ~did~ get invited.

To put all that in a shorter form: Judge the player, not the character type.

Agreed, same goes for Captain Sabatons request for the players who play kids.

I've been playing a kid for two days, and I have had amusing RP with him. He's actually my first surface character I really enjoy. And that i dare to say after 2 days of playing with him.

Nor have I received any negative tells about him, is that a good thing? I don't know, the players who actually have a problem with 'William' or don't agree with the RP he's doing don't give me any feedback if there are any.

I'm trying to make William amusing, I want the players behind their PC's, don't matter how their characters react on William, to laugh. I want to involve every character who just sits or stands at Cordor Square in his RP. I don't like people who just stand there doing nothing.

And after two gains, I've gained 3 DC's with him.

If you want to play an annoying brat, then do it! In the real world you've more annoying brats then fun people. Be realistic! -But- that doesn't mean you may ruin someone elses playtime. It's their leisure afterall. (I hope so)

Their are enough NPC's were you can RP with. Not that they actually say something back...

Do not convict kids just because you don't see them fitting. As Cori said: Judge the player.

Thats fine, its just the baby-talking, teehee, gigglepoke, then throw a helball, or 30str break your leg off and beat you with it children that make me absolutely wretch.

The vast majority of them are that way.

By children I mean 3-9. I've no problem with 12-20, thats perfectly acceptable to me. Just if they're going to be experienced adventurors, at least make it, make sense, or for the love of god have them 'grow up' eventually.

And FYI, if Xy catches one of the brats misbheaving, they'll get a switch across the hind end.

Back then, there was no such thing as 'not beating illbehaved miscrients.'
