Is there any way a physical sign could be added to big cities to serve as the general auction board?

A physical representation that characters could walk up to and "check" on the auctions they are watching, or "put up" a new auction that players can get curious and look at the PC Notice board after they see? Sure, not everyone will post on the board, but I think having a physical, selectable sign (so it can be highlighted and is nice and obvious) will promote some fun RP encounters (bidding wars taking on a new, real time dimension comes to mind) and could be feasible for at least Cordor, outside the temple of Waukeen, or something.

It could also serve as a RP hub in other locations, a place to check to see if other characters are hanging around. Walking through Amia forest (or wherever), and pause by the auction board to see what's new and if anyone else is there. I think it would give a good sense of connectedness to an otherwise intangible sort of process, for those who want it, to have a physical, IG sign. People could be like, "oh, meet me at the auction board in Cordor/Kohlingen/etc" to do their transactions, and generally give more cohesion to it.

Quick addition: It occurred to me after I hit submit that I should clarify I wouldn't want the sign to actually -do- anything. Just sit there, be pretty and selectable, and attract characters for RP. No scripts or nothin'.

I can't really add anything beyond that I think it is a really good idea. I would love to be able taking bidding beyond the posts where you simply add your name and your bid.
This suggestions opens up for a lot more rp surronding the bidding.

Good idea. Might consider putting them in other areas to attract more rp in other areas.

Well, I'm confused. So I'll just babble randomly by asking "Can we try an auction board again, one that doesn't do anything at all but be highlight-able?"

No no, just a normal sign, nothing fancy at all. Basically just an IG landmark that people can collect around, have fun bidding RP with and such. Your suggestion would be rad, but I didn't even bother bringing something like that up because it sounds like a ton of work and needing a lot of updating all the time to really be "effective". I just want a little sign called "Auction Bulletin Board" or something, is all! Not these epic, sentient signs you're going on about. :D

why dont we host an event once every week, make an auction house, and have a DM being the auctioneer...?

and have players as an auctioneer assistant?
these players could simply hold the items for sale and once bought hand them to there owner and take the money handing it to the seller, like a man in the middle

i say a very strong no to holding an auction event, because it would screw offhour players who aren't able to be on during times when DMs could be in.

There's nothing wrong with the forums. Some players just want an in-character, in-game physical object their characters can come up to and react to as they would in their auction board posts on the forum.

I think it's a terrific idea.

Nooo.

All that's wanted is a simple placeable with the name "Auction Board" written on it. Just so people ICly can roleplay interacting with it, instead of it all being done off camera through the forums. :)

Hehe.

Anyway, I'm all for it. It's something that has zero harm at all, but some people might get some fun and RP out of it. This should be in Things to Change, though, since 'tis a suggestion and all.

It is a good idea. Why not a "friday special" auction. If you put in some odd, rare items there which are more or less impossible to find in loot but is standard NWN items, like: Boots of Reflexes/Striding/Sun soul +5, greater amulet of helath, Ring of Power, Amulet of Will +5, Cloak of fortification +5 and so on. End the auction with a really good mythal chrystal to gather more people. Do it the same time in the same place every week to make it easier to remember time and place.

This will give two benefits:
1: You will give some people a chance to get items instead of boss hunting over and over again for hours.
2: You will take away gold from the system if the auction is held by DM:s. Otherwise, the gold never leave the system it just accumulates, making players millionaires in the end.

Actually, it will end up being the bossfarmers that get the items because they have the gold. And then they will go right back to bossfarming.

i underlined the problem with this idea. it would be impossible to be fair to the server as a whole if the IG auction is held at the same time and place every week. What about people who its 2am for, or people who are in work during it, or the vast ammount of people who can not log in when it is being held.

Keep it to the forums for big auctions like this.

i still think an auction night with an actual dm auctioneer would be a good idea.

and would have more roleplay...

and like i was saying if a player cant make it, they give the item to one of the people in the middle and they do the item and money transaction

i can imagine all the people in an auction room, sitting down and standing up i think it would have intresting roleplay and could also lead to more of it...such as after the auction has finished a few people that met at the auction might go off for a drink, blah blah...making more roleplay

I would say this is a great idea except there's never anything up for auction that my charater(s) would want to buy. Consequently they might look at it a couple of times, realise that it's just the same overpriced stuff over and over again, and move on.

Nice idea, I'm all for things that might support RP.

Perhaps auctions could be held in the marketplace(s), rather than outside the Temple (which is already crowded)?

Also, if a regular event is held, why would a DM be required?
This seems like a perfect opportunity for a "Player run event", if anyone wants to step up and do it.
There'd be nothing to stop multiple "auction events" being held, in different timezones.

A regular player-run auction event would be all well and good, assuming that there was always something to auction. I wouldn't mind doing it myself if I wasn't already busy trying to move the lower level economy down a reasonable track. Maybe I can have a lackey do it for me.

Could script an Auction Widget. While inside the Auction House, someone uses the widget to advertise an item (kinda like the party advertiser.) Then other people can use the Auction Widget to bid on the item (but only to the maximum amount of gold they have available in their inventory.)

Have it message in game something like, "*[character] bids 510 gold.*"

While that's an interesting idea it seems to be over complicating the subject and distancing people from the actual RP it's supposed to be promoting when they'd be going through a widget instead of going to the auction board and shouting out or handing in their bids.

There used to be a DM auction event every week in Warftown... only lasted for a month as very few ever showed up.... of course part of that could be because he had it scheduled during Story Night.

I'm not sure where you were going with that Oarthias?

The sign would be just a placeable, not an event. It would be around 24/7, as a focal point for people to gather at whenever they wanted, if they wanted. If people wanted to do In Game auctions there, it'd be a great location for it, but the core idea is just to have a place for people that are in the auctioning scene to gather, RP out posting or reading other auction notices in an organised, centralised way.

I actually saw it in a dragonlance server I used to play. The different buildings had boards with notes that you clicked on and read messages. Some of the notes were about stuff being sold.

On Three Kingdoms they had a small area dedicated to auctioning. Rarely did anything big ever happen there, but it was a great thing to have, just in case you wanted to whip up some fun RP.

And, to re-clarify; a static PLC that is always there in a given city, not one that is placed with a Widget. It'd be a permanent fixture in the cityscape, and Selectable to be able to highlight and identify it. I still think this would be a handy and fun addition.

Just to add my two cents...

One way to help control the crazy sick high bid would be to have a silent auction, that way people just bid based on what they wanna bid. Sure some people will over bid, but that wouldn't be any different from the current processand with a silent auction there is also a chance to sell it for a more reasonable price in some cases.

...just a thought.

It wouldn't be so badc if people actually listened to the increment increases instead of jumping straight to 2 million. The traders guild also doesn't help matters considering there all a bunch of greedy sods.
