Guys, don't use renamed ammunition for fliers and drop them all around the city. It does cause lag, especially in populated areas, and is a pain to clean up. If you need to advertise, do it through your character directly (announcements/comments), Forums, or DC Request a sign with a custom description/name.

I say again; Don't do it.

I must admit, it's a clever idea and would work fine on a smaller server, but it doesn't work so well on Amia. You'll want to be using the forums.

I'd like to appeal this decision on the use of mythalled items for ingame fliers since I've been the primary PC so far in utilizing this method. To be quite honest, I've tryed announcements/comments IG from my PCs and IC forum postings to generate RP revolving around my characters and so far they have had zero responses from the PC community. The ingame fliers on the otherhand generate immediate IC reactions from people presently on the server. By far, I am RPing more from the mythalled ammunition than I ever did in the past 2 years playing here using forum postings. DC requested signs with custom descriptions are too inflexible and expensive for current event advertising. Also certain announcements/comments from some of my characters in the middle of Cordor East would probably get me jumped by a hundred guards which is considered metagaming if no PC guard is around.

Because IC Fame and Fortune is more important than server stability and localized latency control in populated areas.

DC Request a sign widget if it's so important; it's even likely to garner more attention and lets you have a nice colorful description and everything.

To be fair Ron, the server is going to experience lag 30 minutes before reset which is the timeframe I placed the 20 or so bullets on the ground. This also has nothing to do with IC fame and fortune. I play a villian whose main goal is to get beat up by good aligned PCs. I'm just looking for ways to speed up this kind of RP in creative ways.

What about placing the ammunition/items in merchant inventories? This way people can read postings while they shop while possibly reducing the amount of this server instability.

That doesn't classify as 'dropping them all around the city'; so feel free to put them in merchant inventories, or any storage placables you see lying around. The issue is with items that are left on the ground and therefore start messing up with NWN's perception mechanics.

And, to be fair, I've seen it within 5 minutes of a reset; not necessarily by you, nor was this targetted at any individual. One person has done it, and other people have gone 'That's a neat idea!' and started doing it themselves.

For 1 DC you can get a placeable object. Doesn't have any fancy names trough, but I got a flag stand with Maioth, Sharina's had one for a good while now. When placed behind us in Cordor East when we are standing there, I hands down get atleast 300% increased responses from players with t eflag around, than without it. I attract taunts, interrested players, random chats about deities or whatever.. and all it cost me was a single DC coin. There's no flier like a living, responding flier with a big fancy symbol on a flag.

Yup, this is a nice idea, but it's a big issue for the server. And thus, everyone else on the server.

just a questions about signs. if i get a DC item sign, and put it out in cordor east say, advertising i have a shop open in the market hall, no one can pick it up / steal it from me, can they? it would be a major bummer if someone ganked my DC item.

I think OOC server stability wins over IC RP. Consider it an overactive Cordorian Cleaning Crew.

Question: would it be considered too small of an "event" for a player to politely ask a non-busy DM to do a shout for them, when advertising like this?

I do this too on a small scale, by dropping one or two renamed arrows in front of a table to act as a sign. I hope that isn't a problem!

Also, if for some reason I have to lay traps in a place where people could stumble on them, I have some arrows renamed "DANGER - TRAPS!!!" that I put down. Again only a couple.

Are one or two down at a time enough to cause lag?

If you do oone or two, you're in the area, and can reclaim them,, I don't see a problem. IT's going "Leaflet in your windshield wipers" style that's bad.

You can still use the ammo things for fliers btw. But just don't drop them all over the ground. Why not pay a lowbie to hand them out to people? Almost like a Speedy's quest, but its player to player interaction.

Especially when you find the pile of fliers dumped in some alley way in South Cordor (after you payed the lowbie) and you have to go teach the kid a lesson.

Though knowing the character I'm playing now I'd mostly be the one dumping said fliers instead of paying people to hand them out... >.>;;

Ur doin it right, Jaqueline. Actively lagging the server and making it irritating for me when I can't move my cursor around Cordor: East without receiving a giant yellow pop-up spam from a well-placed bullet flier?

That is truly villainous RP worthy of great animosity.

Oi! I did it one time only with about 20 bullets strategically spread out in frequently traveled areas near reset. At most, a person would find 1 or 2 in an area unless they actively searched for all of them.

Now I need to find all my minions I hired and collect my fliers :?

Is it possible to get a town crier that people can pay to read out messages in main towns? I've seen it done on a couple of other servers, so it is possible...but is there any reason we couldn't do it here?

This was being considered at one point, only the people would enter the message from the forums, and an NPC would yell it out IG, with heavy penalties for abusing the system.

I'm sure the messanger script can be adjusted to accomidate this kind of thing. There can be an option for what city it is said to, and then what the message is. Make it so you have to have forum access to send a message and/or be logged into AMIA at the time.

given - it may be much harder than i make it out to be. I'm not one for scripting.

And, ironically enough, there have been about a dozen of these things lying around Mystra's Monolith for the last month or so. Since they're always in the same place, no matter the time of day, I can only assume they are Disco's doing.

The way to do it
:D

Your only hiccup will be that you get 99signs limit per re-name in terms of giving them over the a merchant - can't use the ammo bag.

Makes you use them wisely ;)

Ah, sheesh. I was gone to the middle of (censored) when this thread was created. Is lag on Amia B bad enough that laying a few (cut it back down to one or two, maybe) around the Monolith denoting the evacuation is a bad thing, especially if the Knights are almost always there next to them? We've made several posts on the forums, and more often than not, no one knows about the evacuation, or the fact that IC'ly, the shops are temporarily out where they're safe.

It's not a big deal anymore, since the evacuation is about to be lifted, but I wasn't aware of a "Don't do it at all!" thread. :(

3 DC, mainly for the renaming of the widget and DM service.

Might I suggest we make a rule then.

No standing around ueslessly in Cordor that which creates the most lag.

Hey at least the signs are creating RP

Going through the hassle of requesting a sign and spending DC seems just a little too much work that it should be IMO. Your char gets one today, but let's say he's a hustler. Today he's selling rings, tomorrow, maybe lemonade. Unless DM's have a 10 second turnaround on sign requests, it really seems like too much trouble than it should be for your char to grab a plank of wood and a paintbrush.

So I propose this: Buyable IC signs. Have a script that on use of self, char uses Shout Channel to say what they want the sign to say. When used on the ground, it makes a placable sign with those words on it.

People will stop using ammo as signs because it'd easier than burning up a mythal. Simple enough?

*shudders* Gonna gimme bad dreams.. THE SIGNS! THE SIGNS! *runs off screaming*

I can just see it overly used, is all I'm saying. At first, at least. New toys, and all that, don't spend much time on the shelf or in a box. After time people will get bored with gimmicky signs and more responsible ones will prevail. It's just the transitionary period I dread.
