I just don't find it comfortable that all PC militia are exempt from wearing uniform just because they're played by a human. It has a meta feel to it that won't escape me.

Although I already have a rough mimic of the militia uniform for Ukre, I'd prefer a simple badge be handed out, like the one he has for the Messengers. It'd be better for security anyway, because it's easy to make an outfit which mimics a guard uniform but it should be much harder to get a badge. The only problem with badges is that if you make it non-droppable I don't think you can use the barter menu to actually show it to someone, but something like that shouldn't be able to be transferred (or maybe not, since you could realistically give your badge to someone else).

EDIT: I see Jehran mentioned using widgets now. Didn't know you could do that. I agree with him in preferring that myself, *however* uniforms would be nice for official functions such as marches and festivals and whatnot. Not something you have to wear all the time though.

Kind of makes the whole idea of role play quite mechanical and free of creativity using a badge widget only. A uniform and widget would be great. Imagine the fun of someone trying to impersonate a guard.. and getting away with it! Until someone with actual authority comes along and doesn't recognise them or unable to provide the necessary identification. That sounds like lots of fun that would attract me as a player to do something other than just stand around chatting about the weather.

It's like passing the system to a machine and removing any sort of creativity and adaptability that we as humans have the ability to use for entertainment and fun.

They have the Faction-type widgets that give a small message when used on someone. Mind, militia probably wouldn't get something like that. But couldn't hurt.

As for uniforms, eh. I kinda picture, like I said, the militia being pretty rag-tag any ways, with own armor from home being a welcome addition. The usage of it is down to the character.

EDIT: I suppose someone could just design full plates in the right styles, though, if they wanted.

Okay, how about taking each of the militia that ARE in uniform and make each one have their own personal set of clothing?

Excellent. The idea of a rag-tag militia is something I think fits the dale perfectly. And the inconsistency of the uniform for some and none for PCs seemed ridiculous.

*starts a pro-rag-tag non-uniform rally*

just to me a few comments:

1) as far as uniforms if anyone wants/needs the official Militia or Fist uniforms i can help with that, since i know both the militia and Fist armors and colors (and yes there is/was an official Fist uniform)

2) We could also just add "Bendir Militia" to the persons name as well as give them a badge ex. ( Tommi Twinkney - Bendir Militia )

3) and i wonder as far as Nick, he has a militia armor he would wear to enforce laws, although not actively a member of the militia. would that qualify him as militita?

Post here if you have a suggestion related to the Dale.

Suggestion: We should have thread for the public treasury
Some of us hin have been making good use of the new stalls.
We would like to give back to the town so a thread to indicate who contributes would be nice.

Also, we should devise a way to store the money.
Should we elect a PC treasurer?
What say my fellow hin?

1) Woo!

2) I don't really like this idea, personally. They're a more regional faction (like the Cordor Guard or the Grove) as a opposed to an island-wide one (like the Defenders, Triadic Knights or Ponyboys). That, and the names just add clutter, in my opinion, and constantly force someone into doin militia work.

3) No, he'd need to fill out an application. Mind, we're all hin, so he wouldn't be penalized (probably) for lending a hand in a fight.

I think there is an existing method for "donation" boxes. There is one in the Temple of Selune in Wharftown.

What I don't know is if gold dropped into the box is tracked/recorded somewhere or if it's simply a Trashbin disguised as a Donation Box and it just goes down the proverbial chute into the ether.

I'm thinking something like the guard's fine box in Cordor actually. As far as I know, the Selune Temple's donation bowls don't delete the items.

Mind, this is also a nice thread to suggest threads that need to be stickied/made. If any one wants to help in the endeavor, please tell me.

Okay... Just fr the record. I feel a little insulted.

When I mention about possible uniform you're all up in arms and nay saying. When I mention the fist uniform I'm being told there wasn't one.

When chefwudan offers to help with uniforms and contradicts you saying that there actually was a uniform suddenly you're all in favour.

Is there favouritism/bullying going on? Because it sure bloody feels like it.

Nah. Fist uniforms were dropped quickly 'cause they're brutally inefficent and Lyle simply didn't like uniforms. I still don't like the uniform idea, and cloaks were simply an excuse for lack of badges.

And nah, not really. If Chefwudan wants to make uniforms, though, it's a bit different as (I'm assuming) it would be an IC deal, provided by a member of Bendir Dale's wealthy adventuring populace to clad out his fellow hin out of pocket. As opposed to standard-issued ones.

EDIT: There would be a character of Chef's doing them by hand, I assume at the request of people.. if so, an IC post should probably be made.

EDIT 2: A note, by the way... they wouldn't be required, or accepted as an official uniform, mind.

There's no favoritism at all. You're digging too deep.

He's offering to give people the color and part #'s so if they want to make their own Militia uniform, they can. I don't have a problem with people who want to make the uniform for themselves, that's cool with me. I just don't like the idea of it being mandatory.

Well, like I said, I think everyone should have one and it should be mandatory for certain special occasions but not something you have to wear all the time when on normal duty. Probably better to just bring all this stuff up ICly at a meeting tho..

The reason I wouldn't bring it up ICly or in a meeting is because none of my characters have an opinion on the matter. It's purely an issue I have as a player.

I think the only other sticky needed is a ban list. That should finish the stickies off. Others can be added if and when needed.

The military Rankings and Divisions sticky can be combined with the Military Roster sticky. That way they're all on the same page to be viewed in case you need to refer to a specific role description. Plus less clutter.

The Dale began as just a military fort, filled with uniformed hinn in breastplates. The militia grew out of this predominately martial minded Strongheart core that carved a habitable chunk of land from the hostile environs that surrond the Dale. From it's beginnings the Dale has always had a group of uniformed hinn. From guarding the fort to guarding it's borders as it grew, there has always been uniformed, heavily armored hinn. From before Nof was even a General to the current Bendir Dale Driller there has always been a well disciplined rank of uniformed soldiers drilling. The militia is more than just a rag-tag group of bumpkins that are thrown a badge and told to keep an eye out for trouble. They are a well oiled, finely tuned machine of heavy footsoldiers that are constantly put to the test guarding the still hostile borders. There is a reason Holl and Skit still command units and are grumpy as hell about it.
The growth from a fort to a thriving village has happened with in the life span of current NPC's such as Tak, Fendel, Nof and even Dirk. Hell my PC Willie used to buy his healing supplies from the Dale when it was just a fort. I guess my point is that it wasn't that long ago that it was only military minded hinn that populated the Dale. It was their superior tactics and martial skill that cleared the Dale and allowed for growth. The Dale's forces have never been rag-tag and I doubt they would have lost that edge so soon, especially with the constant threat that the Dale has always been under. Having the current NPC militia shuck their uniforms for individual dress I think would be highly disrespectful and incongruous with the Dale's history. Just pictures Nof's reaction the first time he spots a hinn at drill practice out of uniform? ...especially if he's inbetween meals :)
I think having a badge is a great idea, but while on active duty a militia member should still be in uniform. Understandably not everyone PC-wise can wear a beastplate, but a uniform can still be worn. Maybe a version for "support" troops can be made. When not on duty they can obviously wear whatever and they still have a badge for identification and can still enforce Dale law. So uniforms could be worn for festivals and especially for parades! I see them only being required while RPing "active" duty or for ceremonial purposes should that ever arise.
PC's should supply thier own as an "allowed" upgrade to the standard issue uniform, and in doing such I could see small differances in individual armament. Much like the US Marines are allowed to upgrade and personalize their gear, it is only from an "accepted" list of products. The result being an overall uniform appearance with slight variation. For example, when Lyam and Biddle made their Sergants uniforms for the Fist, we purposefully made some points of difference to show some individual preferance. Our gorgets were different as well as our arms. I removed Lyam's shoulders and arm protection to allow for more freedom to swing his "greatsword" and Biddle kept his to have that more sword and board, shieldwall guy look. At first glance noone noticed and we still looked basically identical. With Lyam I made two armor kits that were nearly identical in powers, so I never "suffered" while in uniform and didn't have to be in uniform while out hunting. Also there are plenty of hinn that would help any militia member with crafting if necessary, Lyam, Thistlefoot, and Tommi are the first to come to mind and I know there are more so that shouldn't be a problem.
Sorry so long, but I needed to give some background then it just started flowing....

nevermind... why would I bring up IC something that hasn't happened IC, that I feel logically wouldn't happen IC. why would there be IC questions about uniforms when the militia has been wearing them for decades and never before has had a dilemma passing out uniforms. The only reason is because now PC's are in the militia. also none of my characters have any reason for bringing any of this up. Lyam, the only one it would concern is still bent on being demoted and the disbanding of the Fist. Of course he naturally assumes if he resumes duty he will just sew new clothes to match the existing uniform (allready has the armor :) ) I thought it would be better to streamline some of this OOC as i don't see alot of it being legitimately done IC, but maybe I was wrong. So I guees I'm signing out on this subject because I don't have a legitimate reason IC to even bring it up

This was addressed. Bobo has spoken. Adventurer PCs/NPCs in the militia can wear darn near what ever they want cause it is better than standard issue. We aren't a military, we are far closer to being the Continental Army from the revolutionary war. We are a conglomerate of likeminded folks that wish to protect our home and don't mind bowing to people in charge in order to do so. There is nothing 'meta' about it. I'd argue the opposite. It is 'meta' to apply modern day military standards to a random throw of folks that are not all trained and sent away to boot camp to become conformist with the person standing next to them. We all have gear of varying power that compliments our skills. Visuals mean nothing. Especially when this is an OOC thread. If your character wishes to enforce it, please take this IC.

QFE.

Same about the IC issue. It's something that should be happening and your characters would be aware of.
Not every issue needs to be addressed in character in game.

Just because you want your character to wear whatever the smeg (s)he wants to doesn't mean that ICly they would be allowed to. If they don't want to wear uniform when on duty, don't join the militia.

"intelligence" officers and the like would be wearing something more plain. Perhaps their own clothes. But maybe given something of militia colour for "formal" events.

Don't wait for this to be IC. Its something that can be decided on and then -applied- IC through role playing the result.

Pull it IC first. Like hex I would apply an OOC 'adjustment' to my RP. But anyways. Your argument is essentially moot until it becomes IC. And I'm not going to specially paint my Blue Dragon scale armor unless Nof himself gave me the can of brown paint. Nina and most the Fist turned Militia folk never went through a formal course. Most never trained out back of the Town Hall. There is no foundation for your argument ICly for any PCs to wear that uniform unless they went through that training. If you want any of your characters to raise IC ''How nice would it be if they all wore uniforms...'' or that, so be it, but doing this on the forum is not the way to win character's hearts and invite change.

In any case: here is how I see this OOC bs going. Banter banter, blah blah, no action taken, and this post ends on a 5th page of people stating the same thing. Its like a dog barking up a tree and hoping to catch a fox but instead finds a squirrel's nest. Sure the dog had better intentions, but the result isn't the one wished for. In its stubbornness the dog will keep barking. All those squirrels are going to do is throw nuts at the dog and all that dog will do is bark. Eventually one or the other will get bored and nothing will be accomplished. So please, make this an IC argument.

((BrownBlur: I know its not endearing, but enough people know how 'disorganized' the Continentals looked. 8) But on that topic, does it seem right to anyone that the US Secret Service is a branch of the IRS yet the USA is a nation built upon tax evasion?))

It is an IC point.. and should be active. My point of this topic is really to get DM attention to incorporate it into play. After all, it'd be enforced by Nof.. not other PCs. Especially if other PCs aren't even aware that there IS a militia uniform.

I do see the points from both sides to be honest. garzgoyle did make some decent points about why the uniforms shouldn't be dropped. I honestly don't like the idea of the uniforms being dropped all together, even though I still don't think the uniforms should be mandatory. Personally, I was playing with the idea of making a uniform, if the uniforms are kept anyway.

On a side note, I thought it would be kinda cool and fun to revamp the rankings/ranking names and the division names. I'll admit that when Dust mentioned the Continental Army, it got me thinking U.S. Army division names and ranks. Here's what I came up with that I thought would be a lot more formal, militaristic, and fun even:

Divisions:
Special Forces Unit (AKA Green Berets)
Intelligence Unit
Arcane Defense Unit
Medical Unit

Ranks:
General of the Militia
Lieutenant General
Captain
Sergeant
Private First Class
Private
Recruit (Not a full Militia member yet, still in training)

Again, just some ideas I thought were kinda cool and a lot more formal. ::shrug::

I really don't expect anyone to take a liking to it to be honest but meh, I thought it was worth mentioning and suggesting anyway.

I think it'll be interesting having a more complex chain of command as proposed by Gunz.

It'll be good so see played out too in game. A 'higher up' making sure their underlings are keeping on their toes and all that.

This I strongly agree with. Every militia member should possess the official uniform according to their rank and division. The foundation of any army is discipline. Though it should not be mandatory to wear it 24/7.

I think the system of ranks is interesting, but honestly, we only have...what, 30 members including NPCs? So take out the 7 NPCs and a few inactive members...and that's 20 militia members total.

Normally a ranking system like that is a spread so...1 general, 2 lieutenant generals, 4 captains, 8 sergeants...and then everyone else is based on experience? That's still half the militia. So half is upper ranking? That's kind of weird, don't you think?

And for "official" uniforms, when would they be used? What parades or special times are there for them to wear them?

Well I imagine that Nof and the higher-ups would be expecting the militia to do training exercises, report in, do day-to-day patrols, order around new recruits, defend Bendir Dale from tyranny, Go on missions outside Bendir Dale, general policing, and guard duty.

What other times would one be expected to be in uniform for?

Except kinky role play.
You know what they say about a man in uniform.

I have to agree with that. More complex chain of command would be an idea, but there simply aren't enough people to keep an officer's ranking from being saturated. As for the division names/rankings that should be brought up ICly.

I'll concede that uniforms can be implemented, but their usage should be decided ICly.

An addendum is added.

Egan,

You're being appointed to handle plotting out the festival on behalf of my sister. Best of luck, boyo.

Eh... Not really? We have 5 ranks already. It's only adding 2 more. Besides, it was posted as something to think about since the Militia has grown with the Fist being added, not to mention, the number of people I've seen show interest in joining. If anything, for now, "lieutenant general" could be dropped to lessen the ranks. Hell, even "Private First Class".

The Ranks weren't as big a deal than the divisions for me to be honest. I don't like the current division names. I think they're a little... too... in lame mans terms I guess... A little too simple, like their was little effort put in using better terms. ::shrug::

Dear Captain

I am quite frankly at a loss as to why my sister, Kas'udi and her daughter Elwen are banned from your town. I remember once your own Militia's overzealousness in behaviour and I wonder if this is just a simple case of brutal oppression by the 'lawgivers'?

Regardless, I seek that the charges should be dropped against my Kindred and I am happy to pay for any damages caused to your town. It is not wise to angry my sister and I presume someone did.

As for putting a little child onto the Banned list, that just goes too far! The child is clearly innocent. I request immediate withdrawal of the banning of an innocent child from your list. One wouldn't want it known that Bendir Dale oppresses little children now would they?

I am certain you will do the right thing here and re-assess the situation.

Yours sincerely

Keep in mind, the division names were thought up by Lyle, so they aren't art.

If they were thought up by Lyle, wouldn't his one's become redundant after having to adopt whatever ranking system is in place with the already functional militia?

Not really. Lyle slyly added in (at the meeting) that the militia would take on the Fist's organizational structure. OOCly, it was a cheap way of having something to work off of, since I couldn't find any specifics on the militia rankings and such.
