I was trying to find a reason why the level cap on Amia is 30. Despite my research, I couldn't find an answer anywhere.
I assume that it is to discourage metagamers, and to encourage RP...
I'd just like some clarification. Thanks!

Because balancing for 40 is a shit ton harder than balancing for 30, and 30 gives us wiggle room to appropriately challenge even the strongest amian characters without resorting to 100% ridiculous monsters.

Also, adding to the balancing issue... It's quite difficult to get the full benefits from a level 30 character in attempt to create a power-build, than you would at level 40.
So yes, to, in a way, reinforce roleplay, and not have uber-strong heroes roaming the world.

Yes, at level 40, you can generally dip into whatever class you want with no real loss of benefits.

That's why I sort of like building for 30, rather than 40. You're forced to make a choice and have to weigh the losses and gains. There's two things I'd like to have 40 levels for, and that's Mystic Theurge (Cleric/Wizard) and kind of an Eldrict Knight (Fighter/Wizard). Both are cool concepts, but a bit too useless with a 30 cap. Then again, at 40 levels the gap to the strongest builds would be even greater. *shrug*

Yeah. I am sad about Eldritch Knights, too. I'm trying to play one, and she sucks big time at level 30. Alas. Better this way.

I've actually seen a lot of success with Eldritch Knights here. In fact, one of my characters heads a group of them, and by the few that know of them, they are well respected and feared by some, both IC, and just a little bit OoC...I hope.
In fact the snarky, panache-soaked drow you've all come to know and love, Beldor Ma'fer, is what I call the "Alter-Eldritch Knight": Barbarian/Sorcerer lol. "Eldritch Raver" also sounds pretty nice.
Anyway, to get on topic, I thought the 30 lv cap was a drag when I first started here, but then again, I had just come from an extremely powergamery, favoristic, chaotic-stupid server where people only rped once they reached 40, and then it was just "Har har, I pwnzers you cuz I is foe-day!".
I rather like the 30 cap now. You can still get "Epic" characters that can be feared even by other epics ICly, -especially- if you RP that epicness, instead of just relying on your stat-sheet to portray it.

Harper Scout levels can be very useful. And yesh, I believe everyone's allowed to take HS levels and ignore them.

Level forty leaves a huge opening for people to grab a powerbuild that has everything in a very nasty fashion.

Level 40 is a nasty and dark idea that should be chained up and forever hidden in a dark pit bellow the vaults of the amian dm's basement and never again discussed, imho.
Level 30 is quite enough to make Amia a most interesting place thankyou.

You could do a Charisma based Cleric 12 / Sorcerer 18 with AB near to 56 fully buff (without True strike) and AC over 60 (with divine shield) if i remember right.
EDIT: oh wait, it was the time where i didnt understand AB AC cap so might be wrong on numbers, anyway, you can ask me if you would want the stats.

I once thought it might be cool to give extra levels beyond 30 as a DC reward. Like, 20 DCs per level, and you still had to go earn the exp, which would be hard, since you would be out of range for more people. You could even cap it at 35 or 32 or something. But a little extra boost to make truly "epic characters" which are actually better than the average epic lvl 30.
It could even like require DM approval of the RP, with a story and everything. So no RP cheese builds would be getting it. But 35 Ranger? Sweetness.
It's a fun thought at least. Please dont get all crazy commenting on it, and why you think its stupid. Its not a real proposal, nor something i am saying would be better than the 30 cap.

Eww, buying levels with DCs is very much a bad ideas, it really is. You need to keep every player on the same level in regards to mechanics.

I like it, actually. To some extent at least. But I'll have to agree with Tormak concerning mechanics and such.

Wouldn't the server be awkwardly changed to 1-3X? That could confuse a lot of people. If it is changed to 1-40 there might be a lot of confusion about what the limit is when people reach thirty and find they need many DCs to continue.
1-30 works fine for me at least!

I couldn't make monsters to challenge the kind of characters myself and similar filth-peddlers would immediately begin building, without bending the rest of the server over and vigorously prisonbitching them.

This surprises me. I've got a lvl 24 eldritchy build who I thought would major suck. I've been surprised how well he holds his own in parties with pc's of similar lvl. - haven't pvped with him....i think there he'd get pasted but party pvm is fine- maybe i just party with builders as bad as I am

Well, sure you can build one and survive, you can do that with pretty much any class combo on Amia. However, going Fighter/Wizard with 30 levels doesn't gain you anything you wouldn't get more of with other classes. Clerics fight and cast spells better, bards fight and cast spells better, wizards cast spells better (and often survive better with their buffs) and fighters fight better. Either you're primarily a caster with some armor and weapons thrown in for looks, or you're only good for self-buffing and the occasional party buff or offensive spell, with mediocre melee prowess. You can't really be a viable spellcaster and have the AB to dish melee damage at a useful rate, if you go wizard/fighter.
Anyhow, this should go to the build thread. I suppose the original purpose of this topic has been served.
