I wonder if I could make a regular moon elf, paladin of corellon, that would wield a sword with the power to determine if a drow is really good or evil. So she could smite the evil ones and leave the good ones free.
Is there any lore that would support it?

I think there was a request similar to this some time ago, though I can't remember how it turned out. I think it ended up as a no, though, as it seemed like a part sentient weapon, and part-sentient doesn't exist, or something like that.
I really ought to dig around to find stuff before I reply. <.<

Definitely not one that would work without regard to the other player's consent. Besides, there's already a way of determining their alignment. Throw Smite first, ask questions later. If the smite fails, they weren't evil.

oh? smite can be used that way?
But, wouldn't it be considered an attack if I try to smite someone? I was thinking about something that would "feel" the alignment before she attacks it or not. She will be a enemy of drow and of course not very friendly even towards an Eilistraeen, but at least with good drow she wouldnt hate them so much as she does the neutral to evil kind.

detect good? though that can be tricked, I personally though do not like the idea of detect good/evil and would rather this be done through rp. This would also requrie a player's consent to do, which I frankly do not like to give, I rather see a drow, wether good or evil be disliked and feared but that is just me.
I hope this helps.

Thanks. Yes, I know how elves are played in Amia. But, that is not really the way my moon elf would be. She is a moon elf more flexible than sun elves, she would be an active paladin in name of Corellon, but she is good to the core, so evil elves will be as bad as evil drow, because they failed their Gods. Both, should be put thru Corellon divine power. However, as Corellon and the Seldarine, have an alliance with Eilistraee, she wouldnt hit someone that is an ally to her God.
She would follow the laws of the Seldarine to the core, even their alliances and their foes, would be her allies and her foes. So, if she ever hit a Eilistraee she would fall on the eyes of her God. If she ever allow a drow to hurt someone she would fail in the eyes of her God. If she ever betray the Seldarine and its people, she would fail in the eyes of her God. She is a champion of Corellon, his hand on the land.
I honestly see a paladin of Corellon this way, but it may be only my own view that is so against unconditional discrimination that I cannot really make a character that will kill a drow child, just because he/she is a drow and think this is an elven thing to do. I know many sun elves are that way, but that is why Corellon gave the power of leadership of the elves to a Moon Elf and not a Sun elf. {source: Comanthyr}
Now, a player that refuse to tell me the alignment would be attacked and put to the sword. She would constantly search for underdark drow sneaking upon the land so she could send them back home or their soul to their filthy Goddess, Lolth.
I know paladin can detect evil if the person detected allow it. My paladin/cleric often enough detect evil on people so she refuse to help in a hunt for example. But, I thought that a sentient sword that would be used in drow only because of the relation drow/elves and such would be sooo cool. ^^
I am not really a PvPer type of person, but, I think this character would be.
Of course she would be in winya and if the elves of Winya wouldnt like or accept such character around or if the dms have a problem with such sword. I can always make an elf druid. But, I have no elves and I would enjoy playing one from time to time.

Paladins are more fun to play if you have to put some work into finding out who's evil and who's not, and who can be helped and who not. I loathe all forms of alignment detection in RP. Up to you, of course.. just consider that you don't need this ability to play a Paladin. Those Drow in question might not find it very interesting if you go 1) You're evil! 2) You're dead! on them, either.

Also, gotta keep in mind that Detect Evil/Good/Chaos/Law does NOT, i repeat, NOT detect alignment for ***** sake.
It detects an evil/good/chaotic/lawful AURA, I repeat, AURA surrounding a character. And the characters surrounded with such an Aura are evil CLERICS, BLACKGUARDS ... and i think some of the mages, but I dunno.
To have it precise, I copy paste the info about the spell, god damn it:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/detectEvil.htm wrote: Detect Evil Divination Level: Clr 1 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: 60 ft. Area: Cone-shaped emanation Duration: Concentration, up to 10 min./ level (D) Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No
You can sense the presence of evil. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject. 1st Round
Presence or absence of evil. 2nd Round
Number of evil auras (creatures, objects, or spells) in the area and the power of the most potent evil aura present.
If you are of good alignment, and the strongest evil aura’s power is overwhelming (see below), and the HD or level of the aura’s source is at least twice your character level, you are stunned for 1 round and the spell ends. 3rd Round
The power and location of each aura. If an aura is outside your line of sight, then you discern its direction but not its exact location. Aura Power
An evil aura’s power depends on the type of evil creature or object that you’re detecting and its HD, caster level, or (in the case of a cleric) class level; see the accompanying table. If an aura falls into more than one strength category, the spell indicates the stronger of the two.
[Follow the web address to see the table here]
Lingering Aura:
An evil aura lingers after its original source dissipates (in the case of a spell) or is destroyed (in the case of a creature or magic item). If detect evil is cast and directed at such a location, the spell indicates an aura strength of dim (even weaker than a faint aura). How long the aura lingers at this dim level depends on its original power: Original Strength Duration of Lingering Aura Faint 1d6 rounds Moderate 1d6 minutes Strong 1d6×10 minutes Overwhelming 1d6 days
Animals, traps, poisons, and other potential perils are not evil, and as such this spell does not detect them.
Each round, you can turn to detect evil in a new area. The spell can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it.

ROFL. you feel quite strongly about it..
Well, people told me I could rp it that way, so I have being with my paladin at least.
And of course that would have some rping involved on the killing. Even though Delarwyn was killed by drow that didnt hostile yesterday after a confusing PvP scene that made me confused more than anything.
I respect players and I wouldnt step on.. evil I will kill you!!!!! type of thing.

The whole thing is, that there is no Perma-Death on Amia.
So, let's say, a hypothetical situation:
Player A plays a sneaky, rogue spy PC, let's say an agent of the VDVM on the surface. Has done half a year of RP to get access to places such as the Shrine, Cordor, Khol etc.
Then, he accidentally bumps onto a paladin.
Paladin detects evil on the drow, and smites him. Though, he fails, and the rogue spy kills the paladin.
Now comes the non-perma death part.
Such a rogue-spy, whose cover is blown to one witness, would do everything to remove such a witness, including delivering the corpse to someone who can prevent the ressurection via various magical means (trap the soul etc).
This is Amia however. So the rogue kills the paladin, paladin gets ressurected two days later, and goes to the Shrine, Cordor etc, saying that the drow rogue PC is evil etc, spoiling half a year of intense and hard-work via a stupid, misinterpreted spell.
Would you want to be on the place of the rogue player ?:)

Sadly there should be (and I think used to be?) a rule stating that when you die, you lose all memory leading to the event of your death. Nobody seems to think this is the case, however.
Sorry, but someone who was assasinated should not be able to stand back up and point the finger.

Well, you cant change the mentality of people as in: "I MUST WINZ, NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES, AND ME WINNING IS THE ONLY GOOD RPz."
Hence, always have a mage assisting you with the assassination and performing mind-rape spell on the victim.
And with that, I shallt naught spam with Off Topic on a Request thread.
And, of course, take screenshots. And as soon as a person starts pointing a finger, spam a DM with them.

yes, I agree with you that in this situation, it would be quite bad. But, not only because of the detecting evil. But, for the memory thing. I think I would not tell on a spy if his IC reasons for me not to remember was good enough. I dont want to destroy anyone's rping. But, now I wonder what my another paladin/cleric would do on that case as well.
I think you are right, in such a case where you would dispose the body so it wouldnt never be found again, the person losing the memory about that event would be a good way to solve the problem.
Now, this topic became a discussion, we should move it to general discussions.

I've rped that death resulted in memory loss in my characters dependant on the type of ressurrection used. Raise dead lost the five minutes before death while Ressurection lost no memories. I also tend to rp intense pain and lethargy when Raise dead is used, while Ressurection is more like waking up from a very startling and bad dream.

ummmmm... well, now I don't really know how to proceed with the spy thing. I am still thinking on the most nice way to solve it in character if it ever comes to happen.
Because I think he got a point. What would you do in this situation? He would have burnt you to ashes so you couldnt be raised. But, because it is a game your character will walk on earth again. Can I use the information for my benefit, or just dont remember who done it?

In my case, I figure that no matter what memeory I retain, unless I was well aquainted with the one who killed me, then I don't think I'd be likely to remember enough details to point the finger at them after a traumatic experience like getting hacked to bits, or blown up.
Also, i'm pretty certain that someone refusing to give their alignment when someone requests to use detect align/detect good/detect evil, is NOT sufficient rp or cause, to pvp. Pretty sure that'd land you in hot water right quick.
Neither my good nor evil pc's are going to be "detected". And if anyone decides that's a good enough reason to pvp me, I assure you there's screenies headed to the dm's within a ten minute timeframe.
I think the spell is the ultimate in "fail" - a metagame-ish "get out of rp" card, that ruins rather than enhances, the rp involved, and the game in general. If you can't figure out that I'm good or evil through roleplay, then why must you play the auto-win card? Why not, oh I dunno, Roll with the Punches, and see where the plot/rp leads?

I agree with you. And hey, I only entered PvP when people gave me no option. I do not want to go around killing people in PvP fights. But, I got the point. I would have to find in character if a drow is evil or good, maybe if I have a really high spot, so I can detect lies would be a better way to do it.
So, if I ask are you an Eilistraeen and the drow says yes, he would have to roll the dice for bluff and I for spot. Is it better?

Still optional.
Role Play is not the same as Roll Play.
Finding out IN CHARACTER, unless the other players WANT to roll or whatever, would be rp'ing with them, until they slip up. Nothing says you have to trust them, but until they slip up and show you somehow that they are evil, you can't just decide "oh, you won't roll or respond to pnp spells, so i'm gonna decide you must be evil".
ASK YOURSELF THIS:
Why does it need to be determined *immediately*? Why can't another player, who is role playing their character well enough, be able to icly trick you, until through role play they eventually slip up and you find out?
Why should potentially GREAT role play opportunities, plots, events, be forced to come to an abrupt end through rather ooc or metagamish means, rather than being encouraged to continue, be drawn out, and other players being rewarded maybe even with success, if the role play their trickery well enough?
The most common answer is, "because my character would know". Well, I'm sorry, but you are actually quite wrong. Your character would know if this was pnp D&D. It's not. There is no detect align, and the social skills are really there for npc use, which is why rolling them is optional, not mandatory. Your character has what they have, to go by. They have their suspicious nature. They have the ability to ask around. They have the ability to watch others. And they have the ability to eventually see the other person slip up somehow, and go "AH HA!!! I BLOODY knew it! You're EVIL!!!" when it happens.
Wouldn't that be more "fun" even for you? Wouldn't it feel more like an accomplishment, than a 30 second "Are you evil?" "No." "Roll bluff then." *Rolls low* *rolls higher spot/listen/whatever* "Aha, you are evil! I'm so great I figured it out just like that!" *end roleplay*
Personally, if all encounters were determined like that, I'd quit and go play single player. 'Cause that's pretty much what it would feel like.

Keep in mind a paladin wouldn't just smite evil the next person to walk by to see if they are evil or not.
Blackgaurds however can smite good on anyone they feel like, if say they are gaurding the door into the banite keep or whathave you. They aren't exactly protecting innocent people.

Not to mention, aside of all points about the stupid spell just killing hours of RP which can be 12321324234 times more fun than 30 seconds of PvP, there's TONS of PnP spells which protect from the Aura/Alignment detection anyway, so if you slap me with a cream-cake, i'll slap you back with an apple-pie.

Paladins on Amia do fall when they knowingly associate themselves with evil, or fail their dogma, AFAIK. Other servers have DE and do fall when they work together with evil in any instance. Seperate thread and discussed to death.

It's more Paladins falling for partying with Known Llothite drow, devils, devil worshippers, people eating babies infront of them, wearing evil symbols, Dressed in black menacing armor and threatening random people, slavers, beating children, etc.

Indeed. And I can say firsthand that when I was a DM, there was an event in which a paladin went alongside a Flagger, on a quest. The flagger had a convincing story, the pally went along with it, and certainly didn't "Fall" for it, and in the end the flagger betrayed the pally, and then escaped. Was very well done.
But if you go out hunting with like, some banite who emotes/says in bio that they openly show their dogma/faith, well, that's a bit different. Though I personally don't think everything needs to be solved with a smite. There's such a thing as trying to redeem a "lost soul", too. Smiting should be left for when nothing else works, and repentance is just not happening, and/or not possible.
The thing is, you also can't just use that as your excuse for going on a hunt. It'd have to be pretty heavily rp'd, I should think, in order for a dm to even contemplate accepting that as a reason. But that's for the DM's to say. I can only say what I'd have done when I was one. No clue how stringent their current ways are.

I didnt actually see it as a metagaming, but I see the point now.
I may make her another drow hugger elf as Herkles said in the msn today, so like that I can have time to judge in spite of decreeing all drow evil and such. Like my cleric/Paladin does nowadays with everyone.
And folks, I dont use detect alignment with my Paladin, that was why the sword. Even though the conversation become about the many forms of metagaming alignment. So, yes I understand all the points made and I actually agree.
Now, why roll bluff if you are lying, well I cannot see your expression and you probably wouldn't emote that your voice got finner, or your eyes twinkled, or something that showed you are lying. Some people speak faster when lying, some tatters, some people lie quite well some dont. Everything typed seems true unless you want to give a clue. That is why bluff rolls, so we could have a tool to check if you are lying when you don't emote it. And if I am actually a bad observer (low listen or spot) I wouldn't suspect, but if I am, well.. invest points in Bluff next time.
//Tormak, can you move the topic to general discussion?

See, I'd think differently about anything like social skills, if it were not for the fact that all wizards are not just intelligent, but also highly skilled in.....things that have nothing at all to do with intelligence, simply because they get extra skill points to invest wherever they want, whereas even a smart fighter, gets so very few skill points to distribute, and really, they should go to things that actually make them...a good fighter, y'know?
Same with rogues. Tons of skill points, to put wherever they want.
Social "skills" have no reason to be beased on skill points. None. Wizards and rogues shouldn't automatically be able to toss skill points into things like social skills, without much detriment to their combat related skills, or crafting related skills, just because by virtue of their class, they get the most skill points.
A character is not just a class. If it were, there'd be no such thing as a role play server, and no need for human players at all, because every pc would be the same, and even simple AI could "run" the character.
The personality and social skills of a character come from the player. That's why we are here. That's why we are needed.
So, if you choose to decide that you don't like my rp ability, or wish to not rp with me, simply because my pc's class didn't give enough extra skill points to be able to both stand on their feet without tripping over their elbows, and also speak without stuttering or twitching at every slight mistruth, well, that's your choice.
Personally, I'll base such decisions on ROLE play. Not ROLL play.

This.
And considering you want a metagaming sword, as Tormak poetically put, then whatever 'technical' indication you're gonna have, whether a sword/detect alignment spell/or simply seeing that the person has rolled Bluff, and eventhough their Roll was higher than yours, you're gonna base your actions, either consciously, or subconsciously, on the fact that you saw a Bluff check no matter what the result was.
Say, wouldnt it be frustrating on the other hand, such as a certain bard of mine has, to see a Bluff Check of d20 + 117? Knowing that no matter what you do, you cant 'win' in the Roll-Play?
Instead of all the bull**** metagaming backdoor tools, if you are actually playing to "WIN", instead of simply playing to have fun, and GIVE fun, I would rather suggest using a very ancient method of a ...
....
pen... and a paper. Writing down carefully the words of your 'target', and then checking with someone/something they refer to, if they are actually true, like a simple investigation, if you have your suspicions.

Yeah... a sword that can detect evil drow seems to be too much. Paladins can detect evil in PnP and that's fine if they want to use it. But they can't use that to all of the sudden know that my character's a drow. All they get is that my character is of elven build and evil. Since there are, to my best estimates, a decent amount of evil elves as there are good drow on Amia, my character's evil doesn't really amount to crap in determining if it's drow.
I don't think that you would use this as a tool to force your OOC knowledge on IC reactions, but it would set a precedent for others to have a similar tool and misuse it.
Being a solely drow player, I can't stand it when someone sees the tag above your name and instantly starts throwing rolls at you trying everything they can think until they win a roll against you and then they scream, "Filthy Drow!!!! DIE!!!!!".
And for the love of all that's holy in this world. Why, oh why, does there always happen to be a spider crawling across the ground in front of a PC who is just dying to discover you're a drow? Is Amia really that overrun with spiders? I haven't seen one in like 2 months and I live in a place that has a pretty healthy spider population.

Wrong, Wrong. Wrong. Detect Evil does not detect evil per say as an alignment, sigh, but evil auras. Emanating from evil items, evil spell, or an evil AURA, such as Clerics/Blackguards have.
EDIT: Also, to add to the whole topic my last 2 cents. This sorta attitude you present here, Del, is one of the main reasons I havent been online for more than 2 hours last month and almost gave up playing. I enjoy infilitration, I enjoy lying, I enjoy using people IC, I enjoy hard, lengthy RP, to get my Vhaerunite/Cyrycist/X/X/X into places where they normally wouldnt be allowed.
Due to the attitude like is presented above, and a certain metagaming event, I was kinda forced to retire my PC for over six months at some point, because over 5 hours the metagamed knowledge spread so fast, that the whole Cordor was on my PC.
As in, if I'm, let's put it bluntly, metagamed this way, what happens, is that my lengthy RP is screwed up. I can as well take that character and wipe my arse with him and then flush him in the toilet, as the whole "IC" knowledge about my 'spy' will spread in between cookie-eating and poking and nibbling in Cordor, and I may as well perma-kill him and make a new one, as further infiltration/RP for the character is permanently blocked.

You can sense the presence of evil. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject. 1st Round
Presence or absence of evil.
That says nothing about auras, items, etc. It says the "Presence or absence of evil", period.

If you are going to quote the book, do it correctly
Quote: You can sense the presence of evil. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject. 1st Round
Presence or absence of evil. 2nd Round
Number of evil auras (creatures, objects, or spells) in the area and the power of the most potent evil aura present.

I did quote it correctly, I was merely drawing attention to the first thing that happens. What you pointed out was in the next round. So we're still left with someone pointing out to me where it says anything about auras in the first round of the spell. There are five words describing the effect of the spell in the first round and none of them are "aura".
The way it reads to me, is that first you detect if there is or isn't any evil in the direction that you cast the spell. Second, you determine the number of evil auras in the area and the most potent evil aura present.
To me, this means that if you cast Detect Evil at someone who's evil, in the first round it comes back saying yes, there's something evil there. It doesn't give you any specifics. If you were to cast it at a several people it won't tell you who's evil and who's not. It only tells you that yes there is evil in the spell's range. If the person has an evil object on them, then it will return with the same yes there is evil in the spell's range. With Lingering Aura thrown in, it could be a good person who just so happens to be unlucky enough to be standing in the wrong place. It takes multiple rounds to determine any more than that.
You can't skip what happens in round one and move on directly to round two or any other subsequent round, for that matter.

Example no. 1:
You see a human (Lawful Evil) warrior holding a shield, standing in front of you. You cast Detect Evil, staring at the warrior:
Round 1: You detect the PRESENCE of evil.
Round 2: You focus and realise that the evil aura emanates ONLY from the shield the warrior carries.
Round 3: You focus and determine the strength of the aura surrounding the shield.
Nothing, absolutely NOTHING gives you the indication of the alignment.
Example no. 2
You see a (LE) human cleric, dressed in robes with Tyr's symbol standing in front of you. You cast Detect Evil:
1.) You detect the presence of evil.
2.) You focus, and realise that the person himself is surrounded with a malevolent evil aura.
3.) You determine the strength of the aura.
In this case, the target was a Cleric. Evil/Good clerics, and most of the Deity-close classes, such as Blackguards, possibly Favoured Souls etc, have an aura surrounding them, the alignment of the aura being the alignment of the god they follow.
As in, have a look at a typical PnP charsheet creator, let's say HeroForge:
http://www.nzcomputers.net/heroforge/default35.asp
Then, make an evil rogue/fighter/wtfever and check the special abilities of the char sheet.
Then, make an evil cleric, and check it again: You'll be surprised, you find a new feat/special ability there! Which says:
Aura of Evil (Ex.): You have a moderate aura of Evil!
Voilla?
Or just dig in the PHB and rumble through the classes?

Alignment detection weapons are all over the place. The downside is you'll need to get the suspect to agree to being poked with them first.
The interesting question is whether wearing, for example, a Fire King Belt, would protect you against interrogation with the Mercykiller Blade (1d6 Fire vs Evil). I don't think the visuals ping if you take no damage, so even WYSIWYG wouldn't let you see ebilness.
That means you'd need to take off the suspect's gear. Good luck explaining that to the Justicar.
"Liege-lord, we have found a villain!"
"How do you know you have found an evil-doer?"
"He refused to strip naked and let me stab him."
"Guards! Seize this man and take him to the cells!"
"Ha! Rot in jail, Lolthite scum....wait...did you say seize this man? Not me! Gerrof! I'm good! I'm good! Unhand me! My CHA's too high to go to jail, they'll cyber me in the showers! *dragged off*

So I guess detect alignment detects the AURA of alignment?
*snicker*
Detect Evil detects just that, evil. If your Lawful Evil, it detects it, whether you have a aura of some type up or not.
I'm not going to get into some bloviated discussion about it, but focusing on the word AURA and assuming that's meaning what you think it's meaning is..
inconceivable!
Now, there are ITEMS that have auras, sure.

Grumble.
You just entered the discussion!
The word AURA is the keyword here!
Anyway, fine, whatever, debate is pointless as there's as many interpretations as people.
The detect chaos/law/evil/good/etc spells are plain daft anyway.
And, according to my knowledge, no spell such as Detect Alignment per say, merely the Detect Evil/Good/Law etc.
(checked the books, spellforge and some other sources
Discerning full alignment is a DC 80 Sense Motive Check :]
EDIT: Same here.
