How does Extra Ranged Damage work?

I realise that those Arrows of Instant Death are useless, but when the property is on a bow, what does it do, how does it work?

It does damage against whatever DR is lower

If someone has 5/- slash resist and get hit by a longsword with extra damage Bludgeon it will do Bludgeon damage instead of Slash damage.

The same is true for bows and arrows

Actually not useless as of 1.69, perversely enough...

Gives your damage type to the corresponding property. your arrows will do full Bludgeoning damage. Etc.

Say for example you have the following-

Normal Bow, 1d8 damage, with the Extra Ranged Damage: Bludg.
Using arrows of bludg. 1d6 bludg. dmg.

Does that mean my bow will do it's normal damage as bludge + the extra from arrows?

Or, does it mean I get the piercing of a bow + bludge + bonus from arrows?

The bow will have its base damage as Piercing if the target has no Pierce resistance

Ok, so really there's no point in having it then. Max will be what 10 resist to whatever type?

Call me when the guy that's knocking 10 damage off every arrow you shoot, as a result has 100+ HP more and stabs you in the face.

Just go arcane archer. No need to do physical damage when you can score 2d10 elemental.

Those Arrow of Instant Death are pretty shiny if you Mythall off the Pierce and Slash. Then no matter what bow you use, you'll be giving Bludge base damage.

The Longarm longbow also deals Bludgeoning damage, but it's unavailable till high pre-epic, and no good for Small races or those with only Rogue weapon Prof.

Another advantage to those already should be this:

Your target has Piercing Resistance 5/- and Bludgeoning Resistance 5/-. With a normal bow, these resistances would be applied seperately to the base piercing and the bonus bludgeoning damage, i. e.:

damage = 1d8 (base pierce) - 5 (pierce resist) + 1d6 (blud bonus) - 5 (blud resist).

This will likely be 0 in most cases (4.5-5; 3.5-5), and has maximum of (8-5+6-5=) 4.

With the special bow, damage will be:
1d8 (base blud) + 1d6 (bonus blud) - 5 (blud resist).

This will do some damage in most cases (4.5+3.5-5=3), and has a maximum of (8+6-5=) 9.

Also... there's not much you can put on a bow. There's space for an extra damage type, so just take it if it's available. ;-)

Nopes, the only thing that changes the physical type of damage is the Extra Damage Type property.

If you have a Slashing weapon, then it'll still do slash damage, even if it has bonus Pierce and Blunt on it. Nuts, I know.

Yeah, we found that out after we made the Wonderforged series. We gave them bludgeoning damage thinknig it was the best hpys type. As long as it's not the same type of phys as the weapon itself (i.e. we HAD to give Morningstar slashing), then it's fine, stacks, but still converts to the base type.

What I wonder though..

There are certain effects that add to physical damage. Like Bardsong.

And then let's say you have a Greatsword with +1d6 Pierce and +1d6 Blunt. Bardsong would usually add a few points of Blunt damage to your attacks, right? Does that mean effects like these become useless when you have Weapon Type A which has both properties B and C covered?

No, it will properly stack ad add damage.

...

I think.

Because Bardsong adds it to the *character*, not the weapon, a la Divine Might. and Might stacks with everything.

This is weird. I tested this on another server some weeks ago, and the results were didn't any room for doubt that damage resistances were applied twice. Maybe it's a server thing... don't think so, though.

I'd be liable to say a "1.69 thing"

My testing was after 1.69.

I'll re-test it here when I find a suitable weapon and somebody who's willing to take some beating. :-)

Anyone who uses the Smasher warhammer to belt Maximus around the chops would have noticed him absorbing 50% of the 2d6 Pierce vs Contructs that that lovely device dishes out.

I haven't. Anyone else?

What you might have been seeing is +5/5 resistance and 5/-, for example, being applied. They show up differently.
