In curious on what the officialpolicy regarding disguise is here on Amia? On others ervers I have seen spesific disguise kits that changes char appearence, to show that this PC is in disguise, while on other servers it is enough to change ckothes and state your PC is disguised.

How does it work here? Can a PC just change clothes and thus be disguised?

You can attempt to disguise yourself by just having other armor style/color and all that, and hope the other player is a nice chap and does not roll a 100 listen or spot check out of the blue for the sake of win. Don't ever roll persuade or bluff unasked, even the 8 WIS and 8 INT half-orc will interrogate you then.

Things like sneaking into Cordor as Underdark Drow or the opposite are a no go. For that you ask a DM.

Disguise is a failed concept with the names hanging over people's heads. Even if people do not intentionally mean to metagame, they will do so unintentionally, and it may affect their RP with you. I find it's pretty much the same as with NPCs; people can't help reacting differently to a NPC than to a PC, and people can't help reacting to the name above your head. And I'm not gonna blame anyone who does what they can to curb it, or corrects their RP after a slip. It's just how we are.

That said, I don't mind giving a temporary name change to someone who wants to do a disguise mission to prevent the unintentional metagaming.

Woo!

First the hooded cloak.

Is that a random-name disguiser widget I feel in the developer force-field that only I can sense?

Nah, just follow the RP if person X doesnt look like person X hes obviously person Y, if not, he could be me or a shifter. :D

So, what exactly is the standard DC for recognizing voice? Is there a way to counter this, using some skill roll? Or maybe is there a way to somehow mask your voice, do helmets add to the DC due to muffled voice?

Just RP It, I say.

Responsible RPers will both be able to justify a disguise should they be the one using it, and will be able to justify spotting a disguise.

Therefore two responsible RPers will be able to, based on the details of either PC (the 'fakers' skills, and the 'spotters' skills) and how the flow of the RP goes, do things responsibly and fairly. If it turns out the Disguised person covered all their tracks and did so well, disguise works - if the Spotter catches something that the Disguised forgot to cover, it fails.

*Shrug* Though, I may just be far too optimistic in the regards how I see players should be able to interact. Give/Take.

Sad to say, but only in a perfect world, it seems. People always tend to recognize my character's voice, no matter what. It sometimes makes me feel that its pointless, or I could just pretend my character is a mute. *shrugs* But yeah, it would be nice to see more of what you've suggested.

Remember, a good part of that give and take, is making it known that you -are- disguised. Some people, especially characters like my own (Earylduil) have frequently altering outfits, so it -is- possible for people to make the innocent mistake.

Thus, if he's making an effort to disguise himself, I slip it into almost every message he presents, and I don't shred anyone who doesn't spot it straight away. When he's talking, I'll state that he's speaking in a muffled, masked tone. When he's walking, I'll note an unusual trait to it. Just add flavour to it so it stands out and shows that it -isn't- ordinary behaviour.

Can't expect people to respect your disguise and any weaknesses thereof if you never tell them, afterall.

*nods* ..

Disguise RP Can be challenging but fun.. especially if you can do it in a way that everyone can come off enjoying it from.

Of course sometimes, the most effective disguise can be hiding in plain sight (and I don't mean HiPS either) ..

I don't even play a druid, and I see this constantly. Also, people automatically knowing the animal is a shifted druid. The sad part is that people will argue for hours and hours that their character somehow knows your character isn't a wolf/dog/child/whatever, and therefore must be a druid.

Logic.

If you see a chicken pecking the ground doing nothing what so ever, then maybe its not a shifter/druid.

If you see a chicken watching you, carefully, those black deep eyes piercing your soul. Then its probably a druid/shifter.

OR DISCO for that matter.

Besides, a raven for example landing on a strangers shoulder is either tame or a shifter/druid.

And I'd be suspicious on all animals close to the grove by default, because lots druids live there.

Arguing against is so much funnier then agreeing.

Chickens stare a lot.

Wasn't what I was referring to. If you shift into a raven and try to fly across somewhere incognito, you're going to be attacked/whatever every single time, because generally people will metagame you.

It's a forest. There are literally thousands of animals there. Being suspicious of every single animal being a druid is like expecting every single person on the street to freak out and start shooting you. Unless you're Nekhbet visiting America, chances are that you don't think like that!

My point still stands; Logic.

You can generally determine who might be a shifter and what might not be.

If you're RPing a <animalhere> attempting to speak, backflip, chase people, cast spells or run though Cordor East you can tell they're shifter.*

But if you're RPing as a chicken pecking the ground, looking around suspiciously and making clucky sounds then there would be no reason for me to expect you being a chicken.

Also, I'm just discussing. :D

* As long as your int is above 10. If you got 3 it could be a UFO trying to turn you into a female carrot with laser eyes as far as you know. Which would be very amusing to see. :P

Not worth the time of even thinking about a widget. It simply can't beat checking account, name, or the player list on logging in. If you are above those tricks you don't need a widget either.

I dont use the animal shapes anymore, just because of what you said, and I cant even rp animals, so I leave em out.

So I use humanoid forms.

And some people fall for them, when I am in elf form at Winya people sometimes know it is me and sometimes doesnt.. odd really.

Then sometimes I use my old hag form, which is a lot of fun to me really. Havent used it in ages thought..

then there is dwarf form when I am at Brog.. and the dwarf patrols "fell" for it, good rp there. Thanks for that :)

Hin form.. I dont use often..

This logic works fine on a non-metagaming level. But that's not who the metagamers are. The metagamers are the huge number of people that see an animal moving around and their character immediately reacts majorly. It's similar to when a DM possesses a seagull in Cordor and suddenly 50 people are flocking around it like they've never seen a seagull before.

The difference is though that usually the point of an animal form is to be sneaky. If I'm a dog, and I'm doing dog things, I expect to be treated like a dog, not like a shifter. If I'm a bear and I'm doing bear things, I expect to be treated like a bear. There are many shifters who do dumb things that give them away, but just as many who act as much like the animal as possible, and people still go, "Oh! It's a druid! I know because no other animals on this island move."

i dont really know how name changing works, but maybe shifting could bring about a temp name change to the animal you shift into, as part of the widget? Therefor, the person knows that something is there, but not who it is or what it is.

THAT RIGHT THERE.

that is why having an automatic name change to just "chicken" or "raven" should be implemented for shape changes. People might realize they aren't supposed to know that you're a druid or shifter. If you're lucky, they won't realize it OOCly either and think its a DM and rp with you for DCs! hooray for roleplay!

Even if you change the name it will have the color of a PC. Green=NPC, blue=PC, or the opposite, dunno now.

green is only the color of friendly PCs, either in party or in a non-pvp zone.

Blue, however, is the color of neutral. NPCs are always neutral to you.

Yeah, this is a good point, I think I'm guilty of this myself in hindsight, but at the time it seems obvious.

Hehe, if no other animal moves, I don't either. Shift into a badger and stand next to the other groups and people won't even realise you're a PC.
BUT understandably this is inpractical and dead stupid.

But yes, people shouldn't metagame this. For those of us who take shifter classes, don't we deserve tricking people into throwing their food on the floor for us?

You know the answer

Did that once accidentally with my Druid, was hubnting with her barbarian friend. My druid in Chicken form, because she is mostly one and runs around and tries to hide behind her barbarian friend while the elemental swarms slaughter the foes.
Along comes someone who looks quite puzzled.
Me: Gaawk! *pecks at the ground*
Other guy looks totally puzzled: Ehm.. Greetings //How the hell did you manage to get out two Elemental swarms?
My friend: //Its an IC thing, find out Ic ;)

I felt proud.

Thing is, you'd think that if your character has put points in social skills, like bluff especially, that they would be experts at masking their voice.

Even if they had, True seeing doesn't work on non-magical disguises. Besides, when you become shifter, you don't possess "normal" form anymore, the form you were born with is now only one amongst many other. So true seeing should affect shifters neither, or another option is that they should see EVERY form shifter has... try to see something in that lump of forms.

Even with Eir who has a mediocre to low-high listen, I'd never do that in a million years. What I usually do, is send the person in question in tell, saying "Eir has X listen, would he be able to recognize your voice?" If people say no, then no it is. It doesn't bother me one way or another.

I disguised Delarwyn to enter the underdark and save Niss'assa. I made a drow version of her, but her hair was still red, so I used a hood. She was a bit tall for a drow, but she was dark skinned as a drow and she was accompanied by a known drow. I didnt interact with any PCs because they were around, but I was honestly expecting them to not metagame the name on top of my head.

But, I think Nehky is right when she said that a temporary name change would be cool. Maybe a kit costing 3 dcs would be cool as well. :D :D

I would act as a mute as well if anyone had stopped me, at least I would have a chance to escape since Delarwyn's drow has an accent. I think that with the right emotes, one would need to be quite unfair to get a well done disguise.

If I see a PC that I have known previously, but now looks different for what ever reason I always try to remember to ask via a 'tell' if they would be recognised by normal means, or if I would have reason to be suspicious of them.
This works for both friends and foes, yes sometimes I will make the occasional oversight, but it is not intentional.
In this case the 'tells' are your friend for keeping the events that play out in rp running smoothly.

Well, WonWon changed Xals hair colour green during a incident with a polymorph potion. Though it's a permanent change, so I'd say if you manage to physically disguise a part of yourself with polymorph, then it would, and should, be permanent.

Though be aware, you could end up with feet for hair, or an umberhulk arm.

If you see a chicken pecking the ground doing nothing what so ever, then maybe its not a shifter/druid.

If you see a chicken watching you, carefully, those black deep eyes piercing your soul. Then its probably a druid/shifter.

And if the cicken attacks it might be cluckzilla.. or if it turns into a demon and roars: I AM FINALLY FREE! then it might be my Druid playing a joke.

end for the matter of the post, if in doubt I just ask: Do I know you?

My memory is bad so I don't remember all the names of the people I rped with, so I give that way out, if we rped then they can say: Yes. if not, or they are in disguise: No.

disguises don't work because people see your name. whether they mean to or not they will metagame it and recognize you. They will recognize your voice as an excuse. unless you can change your name, disguises will continue to be seen through accidentally. people could only see through it by deliberate metagaming, and you won't RP with those bastards anyways.

Ah Disguises yes:

Good disguises require a good deal of RP and some thinking. It's more then simply changing your look and similar. There's other details, which if people are interested and think it'd be good to talk about in more detail on principle, I can do.

Change mannerisms. Dressing in all white and still talking in drow accent was a dead-ringer for Llothites back when the UD was underneath Cordor.

change all the mannerisms you want. if *IS DISGUISED WITH DIFFERENT CLOTHES AND A MUFFLED VOICE, AND WALKS FUNNY* isn't blatantly obvious every time someone enters rp with you, they will read your name and use it if they have ever encountered you before. for most people, that is first and foremost in recognizing your character.

I'm usually inclined to give a little grace on a disguise.. especially if a person's just walking into the scene, however if you have to repeat more then twice without something that gives the disguised character away.. yeah..

Eary's popped up around Halen dressed in the usual sneak-garb. Until he started talking, Halen wouldn't recognize him.

Or a certain "assassin/bodygaurd" that killed one of my characters, in full stone-skin and changing his voice to avoid recognition. To this day that dude's been walking free.

I'm not talking about you, though. Its the other people that are the problem. the ones who don't read the forums or think a lot about their roleplaying. most people won't think twice, and sometimes not once, before saying "hey <name>! how's that magical sword coming along?" or whatever.

I tend to be antisocial and simply not use names, until it's been indicated that we're knowing each other, and also not be all super-friendly as if I know you, beyond the "hello" that is standard for meeting someone. Again, until it's determined we know each other.

Generally this works fine, because 99% of the time, the other person will respond with one of two things: either a "Hey, Bob, how ya doin today?" - which I'm going to take as confirmation that I recognise you - or a "Er...Hi. Do I know you?" if IC, or an ooc "//is disguised" type comment - either of which I'm fine with not recognising you.

Granted, if it's a pc that my pc is very familiar with/friendly with, I may just assume I recognise you until or unless you indicate otherwise.

most people don't think that through though.... they don't plan their salutations on seeing whether or not they are in a position to recognize you. they just assume they do.

I have an absolutely horrendous memory, irl, so I play it safe and operate on the assumption i *don't* know you, generally, if I'm not extremely certain.

It's why I also, if we have met before, and it's established that we have, I'm going to assume I know your name, as the one I see floating over your head, unless you remind me otherwise right quick.
