Not sure what to add really, but I suppose I'll explain why Ukre talks as he does, since folks are always bringing it up. It's basically a mixture of three different things:

1) A typical rustic halfling accent, which he however tries to overcompensate for by using polysyllabic and formal or obscure-sounding words, which are beyond his capacity or knowledge to actually pronounce correctly, which thus ends up making him look even more provincial. Think a redneck hick trying to play at being a southern gentleman.

2) A slight speech impedement, which stems from his innate shyness and awkwardness around most people, especially strangers, which causes him to randomly drop sounds, stutter, or ramble. This has been exacerbated by his training at the monastery, which not only secluded him from people further, but actually required, as part of custom and training, to be silent and/or alone for long stretches of time.

3) Poor knowledge of Common combined with being neither a great linguist in his own native language. Although not dumb, Ukre's intelligence is only just barely average, and though is he very insightful, he lacks the wit or charm to speak eloquently. This wouldn't be so bad if, because of his high wisdom, he wasn't so often trying to explain complicated moral and spiritual issues to people using his limited vocabulary and only adequate grasp of grammar and sentence formation.

That's about it. Being somewhat of a language nerd, I considered at one point creating a somwhat standardised halfling accent so other hin would sound roughly the same (as they likely would) , and possibly also a full dress halfling conlang, or at least bits of it (mostly adding to the phrases or terms in the book I copied down) but then I remembered how lazy I am and so now I basically just wing it.

I meant to get around to your post but I've been pretty busy with a project so haven't really thought about it. I would guess Hin would speak with, something along the lines of, a Native American-ish accent. At first anyway, anyone can learn to get rid of a foreign accent. I just mean like... a bit simple and almost halting.

How does your halfling character's social class get shown through communication?
Willow grew up just outside of the big Hin city of Beluir and near the Lluirwood. So her social class was a bit of the less fortunate side but because she grew up near Beluir and near the forest, she has a unique outlook. She has that big city mentality but with a love for the woods. She doesn't speak with many big words, she keeps it simple most of the time.

Benki, on the other had, grew up in the Chondalwood. He comes from an area deep in the forest with river beds all over. He obviously has always lived a very simple life because he never had much. Even now, he may be a resident of the Dale, but he never sleeps there. He always camps out near the Bendir Dale graveyard or, sometimes, elsewhere out in the wilds. I see him as having a bit of a gypsy/country folk type mentality.

What other forms of communication does your character use to convey instructions or statements?
Willow speaks four languages: Hin, Common, Druidic, and Sylvan. She can also write in all four tongues and does so regularly. She also uses a lot of gestures and "vibes" to communicate since shes a Druid and deals with animals on a day to day basis. By vibes, I mean she keeps certain emotional vibes apparent to communicate with creatures without speaking to them (this because animals can sense peoples state of mind, or so it's said).

Benki also uses "vibes" and gestures to communicate, more than actually speaking even. He only speaks Hin and very poor Common. He can only read and write in Hin, though it's very very poor, like a 3rd or 4th grade child. He also uses Ghost Sign, a sign language for Ghostwise Hin.

What major events have influenced the way your character communicates?
For Willow, just the environments she grew up in. Whether it was back in Luiren or on Amia, she always walked a fine line of the woodland life and a healthy dose of the city life. These days though, she spends a lot less time in cities and sticks to the wilds and small towns like Bendir Dale, Wharftown, and Uhm.

For Benki, again, the environments he grew up in. All his life he spent in the wilds of forest lands. Only the last year or two that he's made his way out of the Chondalwood and to Amia has he ever even been to any towns or cities. He's very afraid of Cordor too. He went to the outskirts once and has never gone back there, let alone gone into the city itself.

Is halfling writing impaired by the lack of gestures?
I wouldn't think so, but maybe. I think the Hin tongue, both spoken and written, would evolve a bit in different areas since Hin are so nomadic. I would assume a lot of Hin would have learned how to express themselves better in written form over time.

Ah well I have been meaning to get around to this one so here it goes...

Belladonna comes from a semi wild background, anyone who has read her history will know that already, so her own language would have been naturally quite simple.

However with the death of her family she found herself in the great hive that is Baldurs Gate for nigh on four years before she moved on. She was poor and destitue and sought out work wherever she could. That eventually ended up with her in the infamous Baldur's Gate bath houses working as a -real- masseuse.

In that time their she learnt a higher class of common as she was considered to be very good at what she did, her small form often attracting the eye of the more higher class customers. She has always been quite witty and intelligent so conversing with her became easy after a time.

It is hardly how most other hin would talk I know, but Belladonna is a product of her experiences and maybe this might give you a better falvour of why she is the way she is.

OH GAWD *thinks about how long it would take to answer for all is my hin*

me personally i just kinda wind it, i have notice i tend to fall in love with some words and/or phrases that i well use with each character absentmindedly, but i genarally try to give each character their own personality and little quirks...

*TAKES A DEEP BREATH*

Nick - he is a proud and confident hin but doesn't feel the need to brag about his skills. However he is quick to shoot down any other races perception of hin and not let them talk down to any hin. Having grew up in the Dale as a child he feels a certain connection to it, which keeps drawing him back. His late teen years and early 20's were spent living in the grove as a protector (and yes he actually was a few lvls Ranger) teaching himself the ways of the world and basically raising himself from that point. As a result of his upbringing he has learned common very well, as well as elven which he learned from the many years he lived in the grove. He generally speaks common without much of a hin accent, but when around Hin it tends to come out more. He is also an intelligent hin (not wizard-like INT 14) but he's cunning when need be, and is well versed in "theives cant". He's been in the some of the noblest and shady guilds around Amia on his way to finding himself, but in the end I'd say alot of this has influnced him in becoming the hin he is today with his personality and speech as well as the way he talks to people.

Harry - well he also is an mildly intelligent hin, but tends to get in his mind's way when dealing with things. He wasn't always like this albeit, there once was a resonably decent version of Harry, but his years of crime in the flag has changed him into more of a common thug. His time in south cordor hasn't really helped his common much, since the poor and uneducated litter the streets. He can speak halfing but tends not to unless absolutely nessecary, and with his "lack" of good decision making making him an outcast in the Dale, he tends to not care or become overly exicted when he see's another hin, unless it's a "female" hin of course. He now is merely a shell of a hin that rarely makes the right decision anymore and has only a loyalty to the Flag.

Tommi - Tommi is a weird hin to be honest, his vast intelligence as a wizard makes him rather pompus at times as well a arrogant. His common is flawless as well as his Elven, Dwarven and Goblin. He is a well groomed hin with extravagate silk outfits, as well as jewelery. He was a rather happy and cheery hin when he first arrived in Bendir but has become much more serious and lacking of a sense of humor these days. Often times he will tend to showcase his powers for no good reason but to be braggish, although he is generally quiet and reserved outwardly. If you get him to talk about his personal life you've done something rare, for he is also very private about any of that.

(It feels like I may have gone a bit off topic, but once I started typing I just couldn't stop, hehe. Well anyhow, gotta run and cook dinner so i'll have to throw a "TO BE CONTINUED..." out there and get going for now)

TO BE CONTINUED...

I can add little to this discussion except my thoughts on the influences on my characters speech patterns:

Early in life, Okra spent more time talking to both hinfolk and non-hinfolk than Ukre or his other siblings. Being the eldest sibling, it often fell to him to be the spokes-hin when Mum and Da weren't about or when sent to town on errands. Being a freindly and charismatic hin, he took to the role well. He picked up external colloquiallisms of the common tongue from travelers and merchants in this role and thus has a less provincial accent and manner of speech than some Luiren Stronghearts despite his modest farming heritage. He doesn't possess any great intelligence and tends to use simple and straightforward language at every possible opportunity. He can often be found scoffing at tall folk when they engage in what he calls "fancytalk" which to him means anything technically complex or finely nuanced.

*The below letter is a copy of all letters sent out to as many people as Metalien can contact*

Dear Friends,

I write this letter to you today with a heavy heart and concern, recently the Church of Kelemvor has stirred up a bloody Wasp's nest by upsetting the Black Caravan, nothing new there then I hear you say, but once again they have not only brought risks to their temple and people, but also our own, us here in the Church of Salandra.

I write to you today to ask you for assistance on the day of the attack against Benwick Hollow, to help us, the Church of Salandra protect our peaceful land and people, we're not warlike and very few of us have ever seen meaningful combat, we're unprepared to fight this battle.

I emplore you by all that you and we hold dear, please help us protect our temple, the Kelemvorites can fight for themselves but we're utterly at risk of being run off our own holy soil.

We don't ask you to attend in an official manner should you be either The Cordorian Guards, Defenders of Kohlingen or Triadic Knights, but we ask you as peoples, who've no doubt sought our help in the past and been healed in our wards, to try to help us look after all that we hold dear, the safety and protection of the sick and innocent. Many of our patients are too ill to be moved and will have ot be locked in the Reovery wing on the day, we cannot emforce a full scale evacuation and must stand and fight.

This letter is being sent to:

The Cordorian Guards.

The Defenders of Kohlingen.

The Triadic Knights.

The Glade.

The Grove.

The Shadowflames.

The Halfling town of Bendir Dale.

Winya Ravana.

Mystran Monolith.

Please, once again, help us.

Sincerely and hopefuly your friend.

Templar M. Sikth.

Templar Sikth,

We are worried for your troubles sir, and you have our condolences. While I would be willing to donate two-hundred bandages to the cause, there's not much else to do. You see, Bendir Dale is still a small village, even with our outstanding militia and economic fortitude. As such, we cannot officially aid in any way, and militia members will not be sent to aid you; the risk of bringing down the Caravan's fury on our own heads is simply too great. Besides, we have our own troubles currently occupying our eyes and ears.

I wish we could help, truly I do, but I need to think about the well-being of our own residents and the livelihood of the Dale. However, if you wish, the two-hundred bandages are still available to you. I wish you the best of luck, and must point out, none of our residents can officially aid you under the Dale banner. However, individuals are free to choose, so long as they don't claim affiliation.

Best of luck.

Okay, it's that time when I shall take this to another place, and will do the same next Monday, and so on.

The Big Book of Small Folk wrote:
Part of the reason why halflings spend their lives on the road is their unflagging curiosity. They simply must see what's around the next bed---and the next, and the next, and the next. A halfling greets each new day with an excitement rarely found among humans because she recognizes it as a new opportunity not seized is an opportunity lost. Halflings are cunning enough to recognize tricks the majority of the time and are rarely taken in by them, but even so, many go along with a trick anyway, just to see what's coming next. A halfling can't stand the idea of an unexplored cave, a closed door, or a locked chest---he simply has to see what's inside. Poking his nose into places he hasn't been invited may sometimes be a mistake; at other times, doing so might bring wealth, new friends, or opportunities for adventure. Indeed, halflings prefer activity to waiting and trouble to boredom because doing something is always more interesting than doing nothing.

Relevance to your character? Relevance to Bendir Dale or Amia in general? Do you agree? Do you disagree?

Go wild!

I agree. But the different sub races have differing degrees of this curiosity. Lightfoots are obviously at the top of the list for being the most curious and mischievous. Stronghearts would be a lot less mischievous though still quiet curious. Ghostwise, on the other hand, are a mixed bag.

The idea that Hin spend their lives on the road is a fair judgment, generally speaking, but there are a lot of Hin who stay in one place also. For example, the Hin of Luiren, Chondalwood, and a few other places. Hin may like to go on adventures all the time, but that doesn't always mean they're nomads or gypsy-like.

Bendir Dale is another example of a place Hin come together and stay together. I don't find it unrealistic either. Amia is a crazy place, I would be surprised if Hin didn't band together to try and survive in such a hostile environment. It's especially believable since it was founded by Stronghearts.

So I guess, all things considered, I agree, although, only generally speaking.

Well i didn't have much time last week to write a reply, so i will touch on last weeks subject and move on to this weeks. Trying to be brief of course... Lyam was raised in the Dale an orphan. He was found as baby in a thornbush up in the Southern hills toward the orc territory. Roidoc Tumbleleaf, a local hin paladin of Yondalla, found the babe and took it upon himself to raise the baby with much help from just about every mother in the Dale. Roidoc himself had been fairly well educated in his travels before coming to the Dale and passed much of that along to Lyam. As such he grew up learning to speak Hin, Common and the Elven languages fluently and can easily switch between them all. With these influences I try to have him fluctuate between being well spoken and the more short, rustic style commonly found in the Dale, with an occasional flare of the flowery from the elven. Sometimes though he just doesn't seem to speak at all and lets the others around him do so. This is a combination of a near paralyzing shyness (extremely so with the ladies) and the philosophy that one is not learning when the mouth is moving. His shyness at times will cause him to be very short and sometimes blunt, sometimes he overcomes it and speaks more freely, other times he walks away in mid-conversation as he feels the panicked rush of an anxiety attack. His best friend Egan on the other hand, seems to have a relaxing effect on him and while he is around Lyam can become quite a chatterbox.
One of my other hin characters, Willie Tumbleleaf,(yes, Roidoc's older brother) has travelled far and wide and has spent long years among those who only spoke common. He tries to speak eloquently and very proper but is very lazy about it as he is easily distracted and falls into the short, rustic sounding common spoke by many hin.

Willie is the epitome of this view. His curiosity has lead him to far off and exotic places. In fact, he found Amia because of it as he followed ship after ship to see the variety of designs and the shapes and colors of the different sails. He is always up for adventure and exploring and gets extremely bored hanging around one local for to long. This curiosity has gotten him into tons of trouble and is a major part of the strained relationship between him and his younger paladin brother. It has also led to some of the most memorable moments of his life as well as strongest frienships. He has lived in the Grove as a protector, in Brog (well mainly the Half-Pissed Pint when it was around), in Cordor before the big earthquake, and even in Ultrinnan for a brief spell posing as a slave (yes it was all legitimately RP'd with a drow PC). Most of his rogue/SD skills are a direct result of this strong curiosity. they enable him to see what is beyond that locked door, or what would somebody put in a chest that is soooo well locked...

Lyam on the other hand was raised by a serious minded paladin who preached discipline, order, and good behavior. Unlike his mentor Roidoc, Lyam has more of that innate curiosity. It peeps out from time to time, but is usually checked by his strict upbringing. When he was younger, Lyam was more prone to listen to those urges, and could get into quite a mess as a result, not being nearly as stealthy as most his boyhood companions. His best friend Egan has a tendancy to bring out the mischievious and curious nature that lays in Lyam. Others have had a similiar influence on him (Rizzo, Lyle) but not nearly as strong. Though often struck by the "what's-over-the-hill" feeling, his overly strong sense of duty and pangs of guilt when he shucks them, keep him on the "straight and narrow" or wandering to far. Since his last trip to Llurien and his new found dedication to Arvoreen, these qualities are seen less (he has moved from CG to NG), but they definitely are still floating about his psyche none the less.

I love this aspect of the hin race and try to work it in some how with any halfling i've ever played, from my very first P-n-P character( over 25 years ago  ) to my latest hin on Amia. I feel it is part of what makes them so fun to play! and a good excuse for some of the stupid crap I've pulled to move a game along, hopefully in a fun directon...

Bendir Dale residents,

Due to the war between the Eternal Order and the Black Caravan, Bendir Dale will be housing a few evacuees from the Shrine. As a result I, personally, will be cooking a big pot of stew every couple of nights during their stay. The stew is open to everyone, and I've stolen a few recipes that are completely idiot-proof. The shrine has assured me they'll remain neutral, so we needn't worry for the Caravan's wrath.

Johanna Hardingdale pops in briefly to check any mail addressed to her at her old abode. Noticing the posted note, she gives it a read over, twice, then thrice.

Coughing into her fist then turning to the nearest clerk she says:

"Is this guy for real? I know he's made some bad moves before, but this is ridiculous! A place under constant threat is a foolish place to refuge anybody! And I know foolishness, I'm an expert!"

She continues before the clerk has a chance to reply.

"Not only that! Doing such an action is going to INCREASE the reasons for more unneeded attacks! Pah.. what - a - doofus"

Johanna swiftly leaves without letting the clerk respond in any way.

Belladonna happens y the Dale and tastes the aleged -stew- that Lyle has been making. She makes a face and tries not to let anyone else see the look on her face as she turns away.

After that another kettle pot can always be seen close by to Lyle's the rich and heady aroma of woodland herbs and a few select spices can be smelt. The soup always contains healthy and nutritous vegetables with a stack of clean bowls and spoons laid out nearby.

"There" she says quietly to herself "At least we shant be adding to the humanitarian suffering anymore" She casts one last glance to the stew and smiles a bit, wondering how she can teach Lyle the virtue of proper cooking. She is still deep in thought even as the first few people begin to help themselves to the stew.

I agree very much with the excerpt.

All hin are curious in many ways. It's part of what makes them halfling. Be it Strongheart, Lightfoot, or Ghostwise.

The three sub races enact this curiosity in many different ways. A Lightfoot, might wander off into unknown lands (possibly even ending up lost, but that doesn't usually bother them) . Stronghearts on the other hand express their curiosity in the business of others. Making them the ultimate nosy neighbour.

Ghostwise tend not not give in to their curious side as much as the other two subraces due to their culture. Their questioning and inquisitive minds are more centred toward themselves, life and death.

OOC: I just want to thank all those who took part in this, and I apologize but I must take a short break for there is some things in real life I have to deal with ^^

After a long battle with himself, Mezzu found himself atop of a hill over looking the orcs looking down at Willows.
“You don’t have to do this..”
“I know… but what I have done I must fix myself… there is no other way”
In the midst of the whole conversation, Suzy had wondered up the hill to see what was going on and to meet Mezzu as he had given her a note to seek him there…

Getting angry at Mezzu Willows formed herself into the werewolf she is to show her side of the beast she is, as shown as well as Mezzu’s beast side already.

With out hesitation and tired of wasting time… Mezzu did what he beleaved had to be done in order to restore balance for which he did wrong. While speaking a prayer in ancient druidic, Miss willows decided to try and end Mezzu before he could do the ultimate sacrifice…

Battle with Mezzus wolf and elemental putting a good fight while still trying to stop him, Mezzu formed all the elements around Suzy to begin the ritual of his own doings.

Before completing the final stage of the prayer Mezzu dismissed his wolf… and the elemental, soon after apologizing as Willows struck him with a finger of death.

As he died he pulled the energy out of Suzy leaving nothing behind…. But a single cold.. dead body…

After the long dreadful scene… Willows picked up both Mezzu and Suzy and begun her jurney towards the dale… were there many found and saw what many will never beleave.

In trying to seek help for reversing Mezzus mistake, little known, he had done what he started before his own death..

After some time of Mezzus body laying on the ground placed into a bag… the grass had begone to attach itself to him, slowly pulling his dead body into the ground…

Few tried to stop it, few yelled, the rest teared… As his body had fully sunk into the ground, many wondered what had happened and made the quest to find what was needed to bring him back…. If they even can….

Is Mezzu dead? As he wonders the other plane awaiting for forgiveness of his foul ungrateful deed… As the sacrifice of his own spirit… Mezzu had restored the balance which he broke….

As they all depart from the scene which will never be forgotten, the sun shines a pawn the spot as a golden lily begins to bloom… giving the light and shine of Mezzus smile among those who pass it..

This reminds me of something I'd like to get off my chest. I know you're not saying that all Stronghearts are pretty static, or the only time they're on the go are if/when they adventure. But you're implying that they are exceptions. This is not true.

Many times I hear IC and OOC that Stronghearsts are static, especially in Luiren.

Allow me to quote some relevant excerpts from the FR Campaign Setting.

Quote:
Most of the Luiren folk live seminomadic lives, dwelling no more than six months or a year in any one city. Luiren's cities reflect this wanderlust and mobility.

Quote:
At any given time, only three-fourths of the living quarters of Luiren's cities are occupied. Before leaving a home, halflings who want to be welcomed back clean and ready the home they've been living in for the next occupants. Unless they've been extremely bad tenants, their neighbors and friends help.

These imply that the exception are not those that travel or adventure. It leads us to believe that the exception are those that have a permanent function, say, as a farmer or a landlord. And as there is no real government made of bureaucrats there is never a static need for managing councils to stick around. All life is functional and usually maintained through temples and the such, leaving such municipality to themselves.

Quote:
Chethel (Large City, 14,512): This port town is one of Luiren's main trading cities. Roughly one-tenth of its inhabitants are elves and half-elves. Of all the Luiren's cities, Chathel seems most like an ordinary human city. A few families who have befriended the elves choose to stay put, placing aveneer of stability over the otherwise nomadic foundation. The other long-term residents are hin who make a fine living at boat-building.

Here it gives an example of the exception. I am happy to think of Bendir Dale, too, as an exception, as long as the other Stronghearts see it such too. At the moment, Strongheart players/characters are adamant that Bendir Dale is normal. This is unfounded.

Stronghearts too are renowned lovers of fun. Too many have taken Stronghearts as a people that remain serious all the time. In love with entertainment, yet with a good work ethic.

I hope this post will make people rethink about their race and maybe stop with the IC and OOC statements that claim Stronghearts as a serious type that don't go anywhere. As those, truly are, misconceptions.

P.S. This was not aimed at GuNz. I just quoted him to make the point. Sorry if it seems it's directed at you, mate.

Bendir Citizens,
My beloved bruther Ukre has returned to Luiren. I can speak not of his decision but have made my own - I shall join him. I do this with heavy heart, as my love for the Dale is strong, but my love for my bruther is stronger.

Shall I return? Perhaps. Though if so it will be some time hence, given the distances to be traveled and the need to reconnect with family and friends back home.

My commission as Militia Captain I freely return to the Dale as I shall be unable to fulfill the duties therein. There are many stouthearted Hin who would make excellent candidates for the position. Of course the presence of a strong co-captain in Lyle Torrowfire allows me the knowledge that the Dale remains in capable hands. Give him your support and keep the Dale united and strong.

Yours in Faith,
Okra Cobcruncher

Lyle gives a small sigh. "Good lad we're losing. Honest, dependable, strong... Hell, both of them were fine." Then a realization dawns on Lyle, and he scowls. Once alone in his room, he slumps into his bed, rubbing his eyes. "Damn it. I guess I'm stuck here a bit longer..."

You cover before evil, before those who take hostages, and you claim i am lacking morals? Will you bow to evil if it is your city in question, will you let the laws of your city change should you be threatened by a bigger power? let your people be oppressed?

I fight because i belive in the light, i am simply asking that those who belive the same, fight!..there is a limit to what one can endure, and i will not endure evil not in this life or the afterlife.

You claim i want to sacrfise you civilians...i said nothing about sacrifising your people, you can come in disguise and it would be all i wanted ...but you can fight..do so..or forever know you bowed before evil, and let it succed, because you wherent willing to risk your own life.

i call you cowards, because that is what you are! To long have evil been ignored, to long has it been the fights of others, who will save your souls from thralldom, undeath, demons and devils?... if you arnt willing to fight..then who will!

i am greatfull for bendir dales actions in taking in refugees, but i do not belive calimshan is done when the hollow burns, thus we must stop them now, before they start on another target, you might find that you are simply pushing refugees around, eventually running out of places to hide.
the civilians should be evacuated, but the enemy should also be faced and forced to make peace.
that is why i call for people to stand up against evil and they are evil, make no mistake of it.

I dont question your actions in the past, i simply ask you do not stop now, the fight is not over, for as long as the darkness lingers, there can be no peace, they should allways be fought and sent into hiding, this is not a matter of trade disputes, they come to conquer.

On his way back into the Dale from one of his many random and unsheduled rounds, Lyam Thornhill catches the notice from Okra on the public board. "Aw 'ells!" With a deep sigh he nods slowly as he heads toward the Hin Inn, remembering his own recent travels to Llurien and the time spent away from the Dale. "A hinn's got to do what a hinn's got to do, but it's sore timing to loose the both." He thinks to himself while ordering a pint from Fendel. " and Okra being one of the Dales' leading religious figures." Tilting his head back for a heavy draught of Fendels' Brown, he clears a good portion of the mug, then wipes away any remnants of head with the back of his hand. " I know I havn't seen much of him lately, but it was always nice knowing he was around at least." Grabbing his tankard, he walks over to a nearby tavern where he sits heavily and begins to unstrap his breastplate. Letting it fall to his side, he begins to nurse his ale while in deep thought.

After an unusually long break between sips, Lyam rummages through one of the pouches at his side and removes a sheaf of fine parchment along with a quill and ink vial. Carefully setting up his writing implements he diligently sets to penning two letters in his elegantly thin and flowing script. Two tankards later he carefully folds the two letters and sets to sealing them both with a large splotch of sealing wax, pressing them until they harden with his personalized stamp. A boar's profile over a large sword, bordered with what looks like branches from a thorn bush.

With both letters in hand he walks over to a hinn in the far corner, leaning in a chair with it's back resting against the wall. "Willie!" No response from the apparantly napping hinn. "Willie!" Nothing but a waving mustache from a deep sigh of slumber. With a frown that brings his bushy eyebrows nearly together, Lyam kicks the chair out from the sleeping hinn, "Willie, get up!" Miraculously the slumbering hinn lands on his feet as he wipes sleep from his eye.
"Lyam?! What in the Nines is your..." before Willie can finish his question a letter and hefty pouch of gold is shoved into his hands.
"Get this to your brother, now."
"Uhm.. now, you know he's.."
"Any message, anywhere, anytime." Lyam's rich baritone echoing the motto of the nearly inactive Amia Trade Federation Messenger Service.
"Right then." With a heavy sigh Willie Tumbleleaf skips up the stairs of the inn to gather his things for a long journey, grumbling the entire time.

Walking back to the bar with an empty tankard and his breastplate Lyam drops the second letter onto the bar alongside the tankard. "Heya Fendel, could ya see this gets to Lyle?" Dropping a few extra coins to help Fendel's spotty memory an exhausted Lyam heads upstairs for some well deserved rest.

Willow leaves a note on parchment.

You -very- obviously have no idea how things work on this island. You can't just "destroy evil" or "destroy good". Things don't work that way in the real world. They aren't that simple. To suggest that the young should be put at risk just because you, yourself, are desperate for help is down right stupid. Grow up.

I'm sure the Eternal Order isn't even aware of your ignorant comments because they would slap you silly for making them themselves.

Willow

Tu'jol reads the note and simply shakes her head. She leaves no response and just makes her way back to the inn to watch the children.

It's that dreaded day again where I post something rather trivial for your approval/disapproval.

This week's topic is Relationships & Love!

Here's a snippet I stole from the Big Book of Small Folk:

Quote:
Love is vital part of life and halflings enjoy it to the fullest. They are devoted to their families; the affection between children and parents, siblings, spouses, and extended family members such as grandparents and cousins is deep and unyielding. So great is the halfling devotion to family that two halflings who meet for the first time are likely to spend hours comparing genealogies to figure out how they might be related. Should a familial relationship be discovered, no matter how remote, the two treat one another like long-lost siblings---at least until one does something perfidious enough to sour the relationship.
Halflings are as eager to experience romantic love as any other humanoids. To them, romance is just another great adventure that may bring weal or woe. Infatuation is common among halflings, and since offspring frequently result from such liaisons, lovers typically formalize their relationships as soon as possible. Romantic relationships between members of the same caravan or clan are discouraged but not strictly forbidden.

What are your views, if any? Do you agree? Does your halfling agree? Do you find it difficult to RP love and relationships in game?

Here it gives an example of the exception. I am happy to think of Bendir Dale, too, as an exception, as long as the other Stronghearts see it such too. At the moment, Strongheart players/characters are adamant that Bendir Dale is normal. This is unfounded.

Stronghearts too are renowned lovers of fun. Too many have taken Stronghearts as a people that remain serious all the time. This may be true in some cases, depending on the character, but as a general rule of thumb, this is not a good way to start thinking about the subrace. They are known to be jolly, yet disciplined. In love with entertainment, yet with a good work ethic.

I hope this post will make people rethink about their race and maybe stop with the IC and OOC statements that claim Stronghearts as a serious type that don't go anywhere. As those, truly are, misconceptions.

I do agree wholeheartedly with your point on seriousness and try to play my Strongheart as fun loving despite the albatross on his back of being a Paladin as well as a Strongheart. He appreciates a good joke or jest done in good spirits and without malicious intent and tries to inject some humor (even the self depracating kind) in his daily meanderings. On matters of security and faith he tends to the serious side but in normal discussions has his jolly and friendly side.

Regarding the nomadic point above, I have a few thoughts:
- from what I've read in the descriptions of their nomadic tendencies, including those you've indicated above, the thrust of it seems to be that they move around within Luiren and not among the nations of the other races of Faerun.
- in the discussions of the Lightfoot subrace that I've read it backs this up by indicating that most Hin known to other races of Faerun in other regions of Toril are Lightfoots as indicated by this passage from Amiawiki "When most Faerûnians think of halflings, the lightfoots are the people that most often leap to mind".
- This seems to indicate that they are nomadic but this drive is limited to their homeland area and doesn't include wandering the entire face of Faerun.

So, what does this potentially indicate for Bendir? Well, unlike Luiren it's small, so can you plausibly say you are moving to the other side of town?, moving to the top of the ridge?, moving to the North side of the River? I don't know, but the alternative is to move to a town dominated by another race, which is a common tendency for Lightfoot but less common for Strongheart. If Bendir took up three or four maps on Amia would it make more sense? Probably, as you could live variably in any one of them. But it's ONE map which makes the concept a difficult one to reconcile as on the one hand a Strongheart would want to move to another Hin settlement on Amia, but there isn't one, only Tall Folk towns, and the current Hin area appears as the equivalent of a single dot on the map rather than a spread out area.

Bottom Line is that I see your point as long as you don't take it so far as to argue that Stronghearts urge to wander would necessarily carry them to live in Taller dominated lands far from their home region. That would be normal for a Lightfoot, but not a Strongheart. IMO

My point, and quoted excerpts, were to say what you said about Stronghearts being nomadic primarily within Luiren, and not necessarily beyond. However they do have that urge to wander on. As Bendir Dale is no replacement for Luiren, Stronghearts would still have that desire or even passion to up and move, even though the surrounding settlements aren't governed by halflings. Strongheart or otherwise.

On the 2nd topic, I have to see that I agree with points made by both maglorine and SephiraAndy. I think it's reasonable and likely that there are probably Stronghearts who are both ways. Some who aren't nomadic at all really, because of work etc., some who are semi-nomadic as Mag explained, and some who are nomadic like Andy explained. Hin aren't set in stone after all. That's the appeal to them, they're always willing to try something new and are ever evolving. I would imagine part of that is trying out living in one place for the rest of their lives, even if that doesn't end up working out 95% of the time ;).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the 3rd topic, I very much so agree with the quote. Hin are jolly, happy, and loving people, it's only expected that they would have huge hearts when it comes to romantic love.

Benki very much so would agree as he's, over all, pretty traditional and loyal to his Ghostwise background. He would need him a nomadic women though, to travel with him across Amia and the neighboring isles, camping out in the wilds.

Willow would agree as well, though it isn't the way she personally lives. Willow has the heart of of a typical Hin but she's very withdrawn, not because shes shy but because shes protecting herself. She closes herself off to a lot of things that might hurt her emotionally which make her appear a bit cold to some people and just straight out cold hearted to others.

*Wipes away the dust that has gathered on this topic*

Well, it's Monday yet again, and even though I'm seldom in-game at the moment , I've still been prompted, by the introduction of a new dwarven resident, to do this weeks discussion on the halfling attitude toward dwarves.

Here's what "The Big Book of Little Folk" has to say about it:

Quote:
Dwarves
Halflings admire dwarves for their industriousness and their strong family ties, both qualities that resonate through the halfling culture as well Dwarves also have a nose for money, so allying with them on a small-scale treasure hunts can be quite profitable. Like anyone else who lives in the same place all his life, the typical dwarf is rather stodgy and more than little provincial. Dwarves are also a bit too warlike for the halfling's taste. Why can't they just learn to get along with everyone els,e like the halflings do? They're not even content with making their own wars---they're always trying to teach halflings how to fight too. It's best just to ignore them when they act arrogant and overbearing. They can't help it, after all; it's just the way they are.

What are your thoughts?
Do you play a dwarf?
Do they reside in Bendir Dale?
Does your halfling or other race agree/disagree with the above?
Does your halfling or other race get on well with dwarves? If so, describe the relationship. If not, why not?
Do dwarves have a similar or opposite attitude toward halflings?

Pres gets along perfectly with dwarves. We used to treasure hunt all the time while she was still in the grind stage. Also got a number of good trading partners who are dwarves. If you ask Pres, dwarf>taller.

Both my Svirfneblin get on well with dwarves. They both share a love for mining, drinking and fighting, just like dwarves. I'm really surprised though that Brogdenstein isn't yet extending down into the Upperdark, whereas most dwarven cities usually do. I'd like to see this be the case so that Svirfneblin and Dwarves can intermingle more freely as per Forgotten Realms lore. Svirfneblin and Dwarves are supposed to be close, duergar are supposed to be enemies of Svirfneblin. The module makes it the other way around on Amia for some weird reason...

I know this is a hin discussion but I'd like to post from a different perspective. If I was still logging in regularly with my dwarf character, I would be very hesitant to hang around hins. Why is that you'd ask?

-Hin cup sizes at the tavern are stingy compared to dwarf cup sizes. (which on amia are kegs, not cups) He would feel ripped off and you all know what dwarves are like when it comes to quality. He'll bear the grudge for several generations of Bendir Dale's citizens.

-Just the differences in racial philosophy: Hins are survivors and settle into almost any environment quickly and easily. Dwarves on the other hand don't: they're slow to adapt, slow to trust, and slow to leave what they know. Because dwarven families remember even minor offences and bear them as grudges for entire -dwarven- generations, I don't think they'd be a pristine choice for hanging around the good hearted, but shortlived hins. That old dwarven saying "It takes a hundred years" I think is the best way to explain what I mean.

-My dwarf never showed much appreciation for nature or the beauty of nature beyond the fuel for the forges. He prefered mines and ancient stone halls. It would produce a fair amount of conflict with halflings in the Dale and especially with the outsiders who tend to be druids.

-Just pointing back to the racial philosophy parts, my dwarf would -never- make an acquaintance with kobolds or goblins which I know several kobolds reside in the Dale. Old racial grudges never die so long as the dwarf or his successors are there to tell the tale. That again would produce alot of tension, especially if he hung around the Dale.

The only thing that would attract dwarves to hang around halflings in my opinion would be trade... but as SephiraAndy quoted, Hins aren't that war-like nor do they bear grudges against racial types as easily as dwarves do. My dwarf would prefer to dwell amongst his own kind or humans and have the hins come to him... as opposed to him dwelling with the hins.

I hope that's shedding light from another perspective.

Untrue. There are no Kobold or Goblin for that matter, who are residents at the Dale.

Do you play a dwarf?
I used to, back in the days. Way back.

Does your halfling or other race agree/disagree with the above?
I would say Willow and Benki mostly agree, yes. Benki, being a Hhostwise, usually doesn't really care for hanging around other races besides Hin though. Willow has had and has Dwarven friends.

Does your halfling or other race get on well with dwarves? If so, describe the relationship. If not, why not?
Yes, Hin have a number of things in common with Dwarves. Hin, not being ones to dwell on things usually, they look at the positive and are optimistic. Willow like Dwarves, she thinks their kind hearded and hard working. Willow has a number of things in her personality that maker her more likely to like and get along with Dwarves, even if she is a Druid.

Do dwarves have a similar or opposite attitude toward halflings?
I think Dwarves are a lot more judgmental. I would expect they would like Hin though. I think they would find them nice people they can generally trust. I doubt a typical Dwarf would go out of his way to hang around with Hin though. I feel like, of all the races, Dwarves are the most likely to want to hang around their kin and not so much the other races.

Regardless of whether they resided there or not, it matters little. If my dwarf saw a goblin or kobold, the first thing he'd be thinking was "those bastards killed my great great great great great great great great great great great great grandfather. They must pay for this tragedy to my clan and my family."

Hence why I said acquaintance, even if Kobolds or Goblins are visitors my dwarf would still have his finger on the crossbow trigger which as you know goes against the Dale's laws. Tension brews, trouble happens, dwarf finds himself back in human lands.

The main point I'm trying to raise though is that Dwarves are very conservative wheras Hins are extremely adaptive. The hins would be happy as larry moving into a dwarven city but a dwarf would feel extremely uncomfortable moving anywhere outside his own city or making friends with those outside of his clan. Dwarven Players on Amia don't have a hundred years to ponder on a friendship afterall, if they want to stick to canon DnD they'd be extremely hesitant in going out of their way to mingle with other races just because of that lack of time to trust.

Here's something I've been wondering for some time now. I know that Dwarves have their Duergar cousins who are dark skinned. Gnomes have their dark cousins in the Deep Gnomes. Elves had their Dark Elf cousins and now the Drow. Granted, Duergar, Deep Gnomes and Drow are a gray/black color and not what people think of as "black" when referring to a person of African bloodlines but still, a dark skinned counter part non the less. Humans have black people like in real life. There is no subrace of Hin that have black or really dark skin. Are there any Hin with black, gray, or dark brown skin? Is there such a thing in FR lore?

The closest thing to a Hin's equivalent I can think of... are Derro. But they're not really hins... more degenerate dwarves.

They have tinted blue skin but tan/yellow hair. They have no pupils in their eyes either.

Tan skinned, yes, but not dark skinned like black humans, Duergar, Deep Gnomes and Drow. They have dusky skin, like someone of native American decent, some people of Latin decent, and middle easterners. It's not at the same level of darkness.

Right. They're related to Dwarves and Humans, not Hin at all.
