Created this thread for a discussion about Fey. Sooooo...let's discuss them. What are Fey like? What are their habits, traits, etc. How do you play your Fey? How would you like to see Fey played? What about Fey lore?

Some ppl have said that they would like to see less tickle/giggle type of Fey play & more sinister Fey. Fey that steal babies, play pranks & whatnot. I would too honestly, but I have found that playing a Fey that does such things somewhat difficult. I do try to play my Fey in a appropiate manner but I get concerned with ppls OOC reactions. So much so that I do not play her as Evil as I wish to. Case in point...There was a time when my Fey was going to steal a baby for nefarious purposes but I decided not to as the grief I would have recieved would have made it not worth it in the end.

Oh..before I forget. Now that Fey are a Plat race it seems that there are more of them then before. What was the purpose of making them Plat if there are more Fey around now than before they required a Plat coin?

I play a very sinister fey as the familiar of my first PC. She is tons of fun to use, and I dont think it would be a stretch to say that everyone involved with her when she does her thing derives enjoyment from her presence. Although only a familiar, she considers herself an integral part of the HoA and if given the chance (and IC motive) I would love to make her a full PC sometime.

This said, I know nothing about fey lore, just like I knew nothing about drow lore when I made my first PC as a drow. I will be following this topic to gain a better understanding of lore so I can make a good request when the time comes.

I actually just submitted an application for a serious nongiggle fey. Twilight court, planning on neutral to the extreme. She could, and hopefully will, get accused of being evil for simply refusing to do good to a certain extent.

Basic cutouts from the complete guide to the fey can be found here: http://www.amiaworld.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=145474#145474

Additional interesting bits from the complete guide to fey (R. Scott Kennan):

According to The Complete Guide to Fey, the fey can come into existence in five ways:

1. They (male or female) may mate with mortals, drawing on their unbound life energies to create progeny. Fey created in this way show no physical signs of their mortal parent, though a bit of the mortal’s emotional tendencies and attitudes will carry over. The mortal supplies the clay and the fey supplies the design. Fey born of a human mother will always be the same type of creature as the father.

2. They may render the fey nature unto mortals who follow no god and who remain unclaimed by divine beings. This is how some fey have earnered the reputation for kidnapping newborn children as they have.

3. They may invite unclaimed souls of any kind, including those of the dead (but not those that are already undead), into fey existence. Little unintelligent spirits and elementals sometimes become fey, as they are drawn in by the power of a greater being like iron to a lodestone. When a female fey wishes to bear a child, she calls out to a spirit that is ready to take on fey existence. This spirit then joins with her, and she shapes it during periods of reverie, seeing her child as it will one day be.

4. A sufficiently powerful being, such as a god or demigod, may choose to become fey if it finds that it is near death. Though incredibly rare among mortals, there are also magics that spellcasters can use to bestow this tate upon themselves. The process is not entirely unlike the process of becoming a lich, though it is significantly less gruesome.

5. A sufficiently powerful being may create vessels for lost or abandoned spirits and render unto them the fey nature. The creator of the fey need not be fey, merely powerful enough to create vessels for them. As fey are “used” souls, such a being usually resorts to using them if they are unable to create souls on their own. Such a powerful being becomes a Rememberer (see below) to all fey under them and has commensurate powers over their well-being.

Fey Mindset

Fey are ancient beings who feel the wounds of the world more deeply than humans do. Because they have little ability to temper their emotions, they can be volatile. Fey are incapable of governing their passions. Logic has little if any place in their decision-making processes, if emotion tells them otherwise. They do what they feel like doing at the moment, even if they know it might bring about poor results. More thoughtful fey justify an emotional reaction after the fact rather than operate from a logical base to begin with.

Promises

Regardless of alignment, fey who make a promise are bound to keep it. They must do everything they can to fulfill any promise they make, even if it is made under duress. They must use all their power to deliver upon their oath within a year and a day, or longer if agreed upon. They expect no less from mortals who they grant favors to, though they can defer their own payment (as in the case of requesting a young mortal’s first-bornchild) for as long as they wish. They know when the agreed-upon price for a favor or boon is available and will come to collect it. The fey may use tricky wording to bend an oath to their own needs but do not take an oath lightly. If a fey creature breaks an oath, it immediately enters crux. If a mortal breaks an oath sworn to one of the fair folk, the fey creature gains the ability to use any of its powers or abilities upon the mortal at any distance, even on other planes. Being an oathbreaker among the fey is a very undesirable situation, for the fey creature’s allies may help to punish him.

Fey and Alignment

The fey nature imposes many seemingly lawful strictures upon the fey, but this has no bearing on their alignments. In fact, a fey is slightly more likely to be chaotic (within the bounds of the Law) than most other races. For most fey, the laws that govern their existence are no more constricting to them than the law of gravity is to a mortal. Things simply are the way that they are. Some, however, rebel against these rules, thinking it unjust that they apply only to their kind, and defy the True Cycle to stop them, as if it were an intelligent being, usually to their own detriment.

Fair’s Fair

The fey have an acute but strange sense of justice. What they receive, they repay in kind. The fey notion of an equal trade, however, is an odd one. It is based on emotion, not pragmatism, or the concept of an object’s inherent worth. A bluebell given to a dryad when she was wistfully remembering the ones that used to grow near her grove may grant a full wish to the mortal that gave it to her, if such is within her power. Depending on the court the fey belongs to, this may vary slightly, but overall, it holds true.

All’s Well that Ends Well ...

This is a primary fey philosophy. Even a good fey cannot be held accountable for acts that cause distress in others, as long as he returns things to their previous state at their end. Good fey are quick to forgive, as long as the offender is truly recalcitrant and undoes any harm he caused. In the meantime, they may consider him an enemy, but as soon as things are right, they tend to forgive. An evil fey may never forgive even the smallest slight, dwelling on the harm until vengeance is sated or even longer, even as he expects forgiveness from others.

The majority of fey annoy me occly to the point of headaches, as most of them are played as mentally handicapped.

Some of my pet peeves are fey that don't speak proper English but instead use ''baby talk'', refer to themselves in third person, are overexcited and hyper, and... are generally just silly characters trying to act cute or funny, usually failing on both counts.

Fey are the oldest and wisest beings on faerun, some milenias old. I would like to see more fey that are wise, mysterious, with an unearthly aura to them, not buzzing butterflies.

As role models to all aspiring fey players, I can recommend to look at how Dark Faith/Nyka Nightdust does it.

*thrusts a finger at the above post* THANK YOU! I feel the same way. I want to be part of the change with my character. I want them to not shatter the immersion like a majority of them I see do now.

The only Fey I ever played was nuts. The spoke about six different languages, and every time she started to speak would be in a different one ... and she wouldn't realise, so she got really upset at people.

Next month it'll be like: "boohoo, all fey are evil and diabolical, a ancient race should really be more social and huggywuggy." :D

Admittedly, I know little of fey, but I will say that there definitely are way too many tickle-me-faeries. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are fey that are silly like that but they're also wise. There are so many different types of fey, it would be nice to see variation.

Fey become annoying when 9 out of 10 of them are silly stupid and not wise or smart in the least bit. That's the sad truth of fey on Amia, no offense to anyone.

That's when you put PM to good use. Communicate with people for things like kidnappings etc. instead of just springing it up on a random person. I'm not saying that's what you did because I don't rightly know. The key to playing evil without being annoying, a griefer or otherwise making people mad OOCly is to communicate. Communication is the #1 prevention of OOC bitterness. Truly. When someone or you do something evil, send the person a PM and let them know you had fun, that you hope they had fun and thank them for being good sports. It not only helps in prevention, but it also makes both parties feel good about the incident.

I'm actually waiting to see your fey go more and more evil. I've been seeing it start to come out again. Let it out! :P

When people see "platinum race/character", they want it. It's really that simple. People want what they think they can't have. They want something that most others can't have. They crave to be unique, be different and standout. In other words, you make something attractive a bit hard to get and half the world wants it even more.

Well I already said all I wanted to say about Fey's in the request topic that got this thread started so I'll just repost them, though Terra names several points of it already.

I'd personally love to see a fairy played as I know them from real myths. Little flying lovely looking creatures, guarding stone or mushroom circles and certain trees and pounds and such. Highly shy of Humans, other races in general and with a twisted wicked sense of humour to punish those that spy upon them or brake their un-mentioned rules, only really interacting when the creatures amuzes them enough that they are willing to leave any wicket tricks and such be.

Truely in real myth fairies are to be feared and avoided whenever possible for fear of being turned to stone or meeting another morbidly funny (to fairies) end.

Such great diversity in personality of races makes things interresting and worthwhile, rather then one and all playing the same general character in different shapes.

I made mine shortly before they became platinum races, so I'm in under the wire. I havent played her lately, though, because I dont want to be a huggy-kissy fey. I just havent taken the time to read up on the lore yet (in the Lore topic, of course!). Dalynylla will be back when I figure out what to do with her.

I highlighted a few points I think are important to keep in mind when creating or developing your char.

I mayed my fae way back when I was playing Alu, I recenelty brought her back but back then she was the only real evil fae going around, and infct used to be picked on to a rather extreme point of the dm team (that evil Old dm tem which is not very alike the new one) ..random flowers appearing around her, and butterflies.

I have recently cracked her out am hoping if I can ever get the paitence again to level an non sorcerer, to make her one of my mains, she has certain mortal tendancies.. and enjoys insulting people to a point they want to kill her/bottle her, but only does it if she knows she has an upper hand.. like other friends around. She will be staying evil no matter what

I recently found another archived fae of mine, and I'm pretty sure I have one more somewhere called sunkiss if I remember right. who is a "nice fae"

All were done before the platium hammer came down.

We need a fey that tries to act like a Cupid >.>
"Find love!"
"No."
"I shoot you with arrow and put curse spell on you! You have cold hands until you find love!"

And this random idea came to me before I knew there was a topic. Although anyone with magic could do this. Just wanted to toss it somewhere <..<

A random computer cleaning wiped out my Complete Guide to Fey, along with a bunch of other books, so I can't chime in as well as I would like to. Grave and Terra pretty much have it right on though.

There's also this handy guide in Rules & Lore, compiled by Jan the Vegan.

I've semi-retired my fey for the time being, for various reasons.

Oh yeah, and I think whoever came up with grumpy Salandran clerics should be soundly fish-slapped. :P

The thing I find mosty a shame with most feys, and other races is that there is no sense when encoutering them of. 'Darn here before me stands a intelegent creature of a different race and vastly different culture, which will interpred things in quite diffent ways then I and respond to my espectations unexpectedly.' Mostly the reaction is 'Oh hello there, how are you? Lovely weather isn't it and my such lovely clothing you have!'

I personally experience a greater cultural devide as native dutchmen when meeting a jew or hindoe out on the street, groups known for being perfectly intergraded in the sociaty I live in.

It's mine oppinion that such cultural differences make life (OOC and IC) far more interesting.

Wasn't me :P

Everyone has something they dislike in DnD. For most it's 4.0e lore, others it's good Dr'izzt Drow. For me it's fey. I don't like the fact that such an insignificant and immature race can be all powerful, rivaling deities even.

lore makes them so powerful, PCs make them silly gigglegirls. There needs to be a better consistency between the two, preferably that they are less children and more like the immortal powerful creatures that they should be

I recommend people to read the Sandman comic where Shakespeare plays a Midsummer Night's Dream to the lords and ladies, as well as less well known fae... Very good.

Also, I'm think about a request. I can do alien mindset in my sleep...

So just how does a powerful being act? Why can't a powerful being act kinda silly? Not to defend giggle Fey but who says that a powerful immortal being can't act silly? Why does being powerful denote seriousness? Can't someone be powerful & ageless & yet still be silly? I think that thought process is good example of anthomorphism, applying human values or whatever to Fey. Just because humans that are all powerful(in Real Life or wherever) tend to be serious & dour does not mean Fey would be. There are a different race and as such think differently, react differently, behave differently than humans do. They are like aliens if that helps you any.

And yes Tinkerbell is teh sehks! Tasty indeed!

I think it is perfectly reasonable for the Fey to be silly - they aren't like humans, which I suppose is the difficulty in their RP. They are erratic, and they have all of eternity to try whatever they like so why not have fun?

existing before humans were even fathomed means they should have a grasp of their language more than just cutesy baby voices...

I understand feys should be silly in a sense. They're immortal, it's hard to mature I get it. Grigs for example are extremely nasty. I'm just saying I don't like them because they don't appeal to me, I find the very nature behind feys extremely stupid and personally wish to strangle the person who invented them.

I have some form of respect for those who -can- play as a fey properly though. (I define properly the ones who can actually take verbal abuse from my characters well) All that giggle giggle, hug, one night stand with Xaviera, giggle giggle, lesbianism drives me insane.

Well, my both feys are quite not so much child like.. Naar began as a child but soon I got help with the lore and she "grew" older.

Cei, in the other hand was requested but I find it difficult to play when I as well take other people's OOC opinion too much account, as well my English is not so good when it comes to trying to be mysterious or wise  I do try and sometimes it works but mostly not.

What annoying thought that even if you try something it usually is that some people go "No you cant do that." Or they dont play along. Like if I were to cast charm on you, and it works, you should act like it. Some people do this only as long as the spell lasts.. which is a short while in NWN. But some do it as long as I release them.

What comes to the baby kidnapping.. I wont be doing either for the fact that people will start whining about it..

Why faeries are so energetic is because of the fact that they CAN NOT feel tired.. And even thought they act like childs, has it ever occured to you people that perhaps if you get the chance to get to know the fey better you would or your chars would realise that in truth the fey is not even near being child.

A role in IC.

And how can faeries be seriouss when they look all the mortal things around them doing this and that thinking that that moment is the moment that will deside everything. They have lived trough millenias.. They have no need to be serious, they can play around as much as they like. As long as it doesnt effect True Cycle, why should they care?

Pranks are a part of the fey beings acts. Good or bad, its not like you can change the lore :)

For a lot of good Faeries, there's probably something wrong with them if they don't giggle.

As well, they have the power to age themselves to however they feel. If it suited their nature, they could keep themselves in a perpetual childlike state.

I would also like to point out that sometimes Fey let you see only what they want you to see. Has it ever occured to anyone that some Fey may act a certain way to deflect suspicion?

And the succession is breathtaking. If the llollthites dressed up alittle more skimpy and giggled more they'd conquer the world.

My yath goes for skimpy, but if anyone tries pokegigglehuggle they will find themselves on an altar exceedingly quickly.

As for Fey, I would imagine that they're always in a blissful/mischievous mood ... everything is always funny, giggling is a way of life.

Exactly what I ment!!! Thank you for making it more clear! :D

Now as our feys seem to work this out.. how about we would start to take leader seats of different factions. They would never see this coming!

That.. by not giving away too much, it's basically what Arro has been known to do <.<

Just because a fey is acting a certain way, doesn't mean it is "who they are" or anything. Hell it can all be misdirection to get something or not get something... or just get dismissed >_> never know!

My fey is based on Nasrudin and Terra's lore, I got the Lore from Nas and I made Lisselle. Of course, since she is a bard she is more outgoing and she aim to make people happy. She will sing to anyone that has a problem because her magical song is able to lift people's mood. She isn't gigglish, but she is very friendly and warm towards people.

I dont mind how you will play your faerie, but you should follow the basic principles. The part that Terra put is from a very good book that is available online and you should read it and other books on faerun fey before you play yours.

I chose a reverie fey because they are entertainers, so it is not that she wants to be cute, but she has the life goal of entertain others, to keep the music on, to bring a smile on people's face. It seems silly, but it is not, because failing can end up quite bad to her.

But, I would remember that the blood is very important and a fey wouldn't spill it for any reason. Hunting can be quite tough, because or you do it oocly or you need to find a good excuse to risk your precious blood.

A fey cannot do too much good, or too much evil, every thing she does need to be in balance. She cannot kill a human being unless to protect that she is meant to protect. She cannot get involved in mundane things in the natural cycle because her actions cannot modify it. If she causes a King to marry an evil Queen and an entire city is wiped out because of it, this fey will have to deal with the Royals of her court, she may enter crux and things can go very bad to her.

So, if you take a healing job and you save humans life and because you saved a life another life is taken and the destiny of people change, you will get into trouble.

It is not an easy character to play and none of us has enough knowledge of what it is to live 1,000 years or more, so we can only imagine. Lisselle, is just tired of the ever changing world and stopped paying attention on it. So, she will be there playing her flute while the Black Caravan eats children for lunch and she wont get involved. Not because she wont care about the children, but because it is something that happened before so many times and the races in faerun continued to live that in the big picture it is just nothing biggie at all.

And Lisselle is pretty much like this one, well, of course there is a lot of difference, but you get the idea.

That is why I think you need more chocolate and sugar and maybe flowers around you. You too grumpy! Fey are awesome, I have posters of fey, I read about them and I honestly wish such tiny and sweet creatures existed. I would have a thousand faerie in place of a thousand angels.
