Is it allowable at Amia?

Also, is there a clerical version for it?

Quote:
Contingency
Evocation
Level: Sor/Wiz 6
Components: V, S, M, F
Casting Time: At least 10 minutes; see text
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: One day/level (D) or until discharged

You can place another spell upon your person so that it comes into effect under some condition you dictate when casting contingency. The contingency spell and the companion spell are cast at the same time. The 10-minute casting time is the minimum total for both castings; if the companion spell has a casting time longer than 10 minutes, use that instead.

The spell to be brought into effect by the contingency must be one that affects your person and be of a spell level no higher than one-third your caster level (rounded down, maximum 6th level).

The conditions needed to bring the spell into effect must be clear, although they can be general. In all cases, the contingency immediately brings into effect the companion spell, the latter being “cast” instantaneously when the prescribed circumstances occur. If complicated or convoluted conditions are prescribed, the whole spell combination (contingency and the companion magic) may fail when called on. The companion spell occurs based solely on the stated conditions, regardless of whether you want it to.

You can use only one contingency spell at a time; if a second is cast, the first one (if still active) is dispelled.

Material Component
That of the companion spell, plus quicksilver and an eyelash of an ogre mage, rakshasa, or similar spell-using creature.

Focus
A statuette of you carved from elephant ivory and decorated with gems (worth at least 1,500 gp). You must carry the focus for the contingency to work.

PnP permission, depends on the spell you're using, and there's no cleric equivalent.

Is it possible to request a DC item with something like that?

as long as you realize you're paying DCs for an item that can be nullified by a simple "sorry, I don't do PnP stuff, I'm not familiar with it".

It is largely dependant on the RP and what spell you are selecting as a contingency. You're being over vague and that sends alarm bells to me.

EDIT: There's still no cleric equivalent.

I have no DCs, anyway.

I was first testing the waters.

If I ever make a request for the item, I will make a story and put it at the Request forum, or just PM it to you.

so, it casts a spell to distract them from the real spell like a trap or something, thus making them oblivious to the secondary part, until trigger say nightfall? but IC ?? sounds a bit too confusing to use out of a PnP game

Basically, you cast a spell and set a trigger, lets call it the word 'rainbow'. When someone says 'rainbow' the spell will immediately cast. Basically, you are casting a spell in safety so you don't have to when pressed in combat.

Baldur's Gate 2 had a cool implementation of it. But such a thing would be hard or impossible to implement in a game that wasn't designed to support it.

(You could do things like, "The spell triggers when I reach 25% health" or "The spell is immediately cast on the first enemy that comes into line-of-sight.)

All I can think of is a widget that would cast whatever spell you cas into it 1/day. But have no idea if it can be done ... I'm not a designer.

Well, it should be cool if everyone involved/affected agrees. Depends on what you do with it, but I think common sense goes a long way.

It's a classic thing. No great mage is in danger of dying at swordpoint, because they always have contingencies in place to whisk them away and whatnot. Doesn't particularly make for balanced PCs, but it's good for reminding PCs that attacking Maaril the Dragonmage wasn't the smartest of pastimes to do in Waterdeep, for example.

NPCs use it all the time >.> Can we do a quest to steal their spell books?
(And despite the apparent tone I am not being sardonic ... I'd be willing to jump through hoops for a spell even remotely like Contingency).

As much as I love this spell (and the feat Craft Contingency) it is utterly broken.

There are almost unlimited ways to take this PnP spell with other PnP spells and become an unstoppable juggernaut of cheesy doom.

I say we do the "Summon Guided Anvil²" combined with Contingency and place them somewhere. As soon as an adventuer comes, POOF! Fun time for everyone.

²This spell summons a magically imbued anvil aproximately 1500 ft/457.178 meter above the given target.

Though I did love being an overpowered bhaalspawn mageling, or have Jan Jansen do that job, contigency would be horrible in NwN. Its like if dev critters could stack criticals in a bag and throw them at the enemy when a contigency fires.

It works in singleplayer games, but on Amia its just horrible.

Yeah, this sounds like a bad idea, IMO.

"//I have GS as a contigency spell set to trigger whenever some raises a weapon against her, you really couldn't have assassinated me."

Like it isn't hard enough to dent spellcasters already.

Celerity is the stinky one.

But other spells work just as well, such as Greater Teleport and Teleport, and Dimension Door.

Yeah, there's no way this would be mechanically allowed on Amia. If you want to use it for a story or agree with your fellow players to solve some situation with it, that should generally be fine.

I once saw a contingency spell implemented in NWN as it was an item 1/day use that caused a red vapor, created a hostile copy of the user within 10', and teleported the user to a preset location (teleport). The copy of course lasted a few rounds before disappearing (illusion)

Overall the contingency/sequencers are do able.

On some action servers like carpathia spell casters get a wand that they can put buffs on, and when they target themselves with the wand all the buffs on the wand fire at once, but your not allowed to put summoning or offensive spells on it.

Of course they're doable, but they're not going to happen on Amia. If you want your buffs... buff up.

Also, *insert peeve about "it worked there now do it here"*

It is, however, possible to request custom scripted items that fire several pre-determined spell effects simultaneously, simulating a sequencer. Whether it's approved, of course, depends on the power of the item.

I wish there were a cleric version ... I know my Sally could get a kick out of that. But if it is possible ... I take it we're only talking really low spells in terms of power, here? Nothing to tip the scale of PvE or PvP?

Every spellcaster can take the feat Quicken Spell, and Auto Quicken 1,2,3 at epic levels with the right builds. That's probably the closest you can get to Contingency.

Create Greater Illusion surely?

That aside, thats a good get out of dodge low hp contingency.

Still its not the same as the gold old 'spot hostile cast: shield on self, mage armour on self, death armour on self' second contingency cast: 'spot hostile cast: Magic Missile on Nearest Hostile x 4'

Who needs contingency? Timestop, Improved Alacrity, Magic Missile x 9 (since BG had 0 casting time for them, and Imp Alacrity makes it 0 time between spells).

Of course, I once tried that on someone who had spellturning pop up. Not pleasant.
Anyway, I must get one of those widgets.

Or Time Stop, Shapechange Mindflayer. Killed everything in the game automatically.

Or Project Image, summon 5 Devas, watch them kill everything.

BG2 was too easy as a Mage.

Chain Contengincy did, however, have one good combo.

Trigger, my HP = 50% target self, Horrid Wilting x3.
This is a good one because if something manages to get to you, and hit you, you thermonecromactically nuke the area for like 300 damage.
