Does playing on Amia, or any NWN server for that matter, use much bandwidth?

I mean like if you had a 15 GB per month plan for example, how much would it use. I guess it would depend on how much you played of course, but any rough figures out there?

Doubt it will be a lot. NWN has been ruthlessly optimised for bandwidth during the days that modems ruled with the dinosaurs.

NWN uses almost no bandwidth, upload or download. It's actually one of the few online games I can still play while capped, and while I've had Netlimiter monitoring it sometimes, it's a constant stream of 1kb/s download, and 4kb/s upload, when idle of course. In heavy combat, it barely budges, going up to 2-3kb/s and remaining around 4kb/s upload.

If you played nothing but Amia for a month, you'd barely breach 2gb, if that.

If you're interested in watching your bandwidth get chewed up, load up Second Life for about half an hour. - It'll stream up to 150kb/s download quite happily.

I used less bandwidth in 6 hours of NWN than I did in 1 hour on this forum.

Regardless, when I had to switch hosting from the office to the house, everyone complained for the week or so it was up at home due to the "terrible lag", which is one of the reasons I ended up having Mags host it at that point.

This was before I was able to secure the commercial service I have now ( and have had since about 3 days after Mags hosting, 16 /3).

What Lascivar said. Playing 4-6 hours a day for a month wont cost you more than a couple of gigs.

Really? I found I was using somewhere between four and six MB an hour ... at six hours a day that' 180 hours = 1080 MB which is just over 1 GB.
I found it was using the forums that used up all my downloads (and I was being charged 3c per MB so I was watching it like a hawk).

I could find three meanings for that :P
1. (Canada, slang) A clumsy, boorish person, especially an uncouth, beer-drinking man.
2. (Canada, slang) A person whose self interest often outweighs any ethical considerations.
3. (Canada, slang) Not an overtly criminal individual, but one known to participate in petty infractions and rule bending. Example: A hoser would consume food or alcoholic beverages, typically pizza and beer, with complete disregard to ownership or sharing.

Anyway, that has nothing to do with bandwidth - NWN itself uses very little, so litle that you don't really need to worry abou it unless you're on all the time.

I just managed to get a cheap 3 deal ... my previous internet was through the uni. So now it's $39 for 6 GB mobile broadband.

Unfortunately not. Australia's telecommunications are all controlled by Telstra, without -any- competition in the slightest (Unlike other countries). Even Optus, one of the other largest companies, still rents lines from Telstra. Because of the fees that Telstra charges ISPs, they're unfortunately forced to place bandwidth limits to make extra money.

It was government controlled. But now it's privatised and so has a natural monopoly.

Most of our traffic goes through a couple of lines to Asia. We have a couple more to the US and one to Africa I think.

I would lose my mind if I was limited on my bandwidth. I've almost always got some upload/download software running. I think I go through about a gig a day easy. $29.99/month and I'm good to go.

What is it now, 32 mb/s at $30/month here in Sweden, with unlimited bandwidth?

Well, generally there are two types of plans here - one where you pay for a set amount of bandwidth, after that you get slowed to dial-up speeds (although that's gradually getting somewhat faster now, it's still slower than broadband ... somewhere between 64-256k usually from what I know).

The other is they start charging you an outrageous fee for every megabyte over your cap (3 Mobile carges 10c / MB over the cap).

...that's the one I've had for agesss. I doubt they will charge us bandwith like the old days of super expensive dinosaur computers.

We americans (U.S.) abuse the internet, and are on it 'alot'. I'm sure there would be a protest/riot if the whole country was forced to switch to a program where we had to count things and use math daily. ^^

No more hours of u-tube videos, and myspace/facebook/music downloads and uploads..oh dear, yes riots.

..we have a cultural 'now' attitude, sometimes it gets the better of us...

Yup, well that's why I never participated in the youtube link threads or anything .. don't want to kill my download cap.

I don't see what justification they will be giving for you guys. For us there are very few lines and thousands of kilometres of them, so it is semi-reasonable. Most of the servers people in the US tend to use are actually in the US though.
