Honorable Knights of the Troika,
obviously, the narrow eye-slits of your helmets have left you blind to the true nature of the world, evident in persistence of which you persecute and kill free men, leaving the truly guilty in peace behind your fortified walls. So I will educate you. Consider it a friendly gesture. A great paradox holds true for your way of life: at the forefront of your minds, the signals of violence are acts of crime and terror, civil unrest and rebellion. But you should learn to step back, to disentangle yourselves from the fascinating lure of this directly visible 'subjective' violence, violence performed by a clearly identifiable agent. We need to perceive the contours of the background which generates such outbursts. A step back enables you to identify a violence that sustains the very efforts to fight violence and to promote tolerance. I am afraid; this is the core of the truth, the inescapable axiom of the logic that surrounds your actions: the subjective violence is only the most visible portion of a triumvirate that also include two objective kinds of violence of which you so far have been too occupied with trivial pursuits to discover. And because of this, you have yet to see this great paradox, you do not protect the innocent, you are protecting the illusion of innocense.
I will explain.
Firstly, there is a symbolic violence embodied in language and its forms, a fundamental violence imposing a certain universe of meaning, backed up by the corrupt gods themselves. Secondly, there is a systematic violence, or the often catastrophic consequences of the smooth functioning of your economic and political system.
Now, it can be hard to view all these levels of heinous evil at once, because as subjective violence can be seen as the perturbation of the normal state of things, objective violence is precisely the violence inherent to the normal state of civilization. Objective violence is invisible to you because it sustains the very zero-level standard against which you blindly perceive something as subjectively violent. I am talking about the violence inherent in a system: not only direct violence, but also the more subtle forms of coercion that sustains the relations of domination and exploitation, including the threat of violence. I am talking about how poor men and beggars are cowed to accept the corrupt systems of nobility and royalty, in which property that was first taken by might is no longer morally available to be taken back by the same means which is was first acquired. I am talking about the violent acts of language, of the violent distinction between a grave-robber and an archaeologist, giving grounds to hang one by the neck until he choke and to celebrate the other for his efforts to bring clarity to the civilized world. I am talking about romanticizing poverty and suffering, sacrificing the true struggle of the poor to feed the fetishes of a perverted god! I am talking about your wall, of your laws, of your values, a system of violence that you have allowed to be explained away, disguised as normality.
Do you not realize? The greatest achievement of your valor, it is not that you risk your life in order to protect the innocent from violence. No, clearly, it is that by exacting violence on their enemies on their behalf, you grant them the illusion of being innocent. You are detaching them from the violence which is necessary to explain their 'peace'. This is what your chivalry achieves, for men and women to sleep in ignorant bliss of the heinous acts that supports their way of life.
I have little hope in that you will take my advice to heart, for corrupt gods whisper in your ears, but in the near future; I will quest to show your citizens the nature of their souls. This is but the first lesson of many.
Now, do not fear me. Really, you should thank me. As you cowardly allow the gods to cow you with their threatening language, imposing their meaning upon you as to enthral you in their prison of logic, I wander freely outside it. Yes, ask yourself this:
Followers of Ilmater, who is the greatest martyr? He who opposes a mortal tyrant and gives up his life for the struggle, or he who opposes the gods, the true tyrants of this world, and gives up his afterlife for the cause of greater justice?
Followers of Tyr, who is the greater advocate of justice? He who slays the powerless for violations against a system of law dictated by those in power, or he who goes after the most powerful of all, the gods, for violations against the laws of logic?
Followers of Torm, who is of greater bravery and valor? He who charges his lance against the fire-breathing maw of a dragon, knowing full well that his actions are in correlation with the values of the land and the gods, assured to be decorated with medals in his afterlife, or he who in his sense of duty and righteousness, fearlessly plunges his lance towards the 'innocent', in an attempt to show them that they are the true dragons?
I am watching and waiting, hoping I will not have to spill as much blood as I have already spilled ink to make these obvious points clear to you.
For honor and justice The Divine Martyr

Elisabeth Hayes, upon seeing one of the fliers and to whom it is addressed, lets out an exclamation of dismay at its length. Nevertheless, she takes one with her, and resolutely sets to the task of reading it.

Xavi, on her way home from the market to her house in Kohl, comes across one of these flyers. After skimming over it, she shakes her head and deposits it in the nearest trash bin, convinced it is the work of some new lunatic cult.

*Boo Shoo whilst making her way from Kohlingen proper to where her brother stays picked up a flier. Her eyes immediately find the name of her deity and she reads that passage first, smiling. Then starting at the top she reads the message in its entirety. Her features go from concerned to disapproving to agreement to amused to determined. When she is finished she turns the parchment over and writes. Her hand writing is simple, clear and very polite looking.*
Dear Sir Martyr,
Why is my Lord Torm , of the greatest bravery and valor, mentioned third? (Please note that my Lord Torm does not whisper, His voice is quite clear and of normal volume. Also, my Lord Torm actually uses "Duty's Bond" which is a greatsword, not a lance.) Where in the world did you get so much ink? Where are you watching from? (as I looked about myself and did not see you)
Finally, you speak as if innocence and the illusion of innocence are separate things when in fact they go hand in glove. For the general populace should not be made to continually disrupt their lives for every act of evil. You speak as if violence itself is a bad thing when in fact, when evil chooses the method good will answer in kind. It is my hope that my service does in fact grant those living and working to feed their families the ability to laugh and enjoy life and yes even sleep in ignorant bliss separated from the heinous acts of those who want none of these honorable things. You speak of stepping back. Nay we must step forward. For only standing in the gap between evil and good, deceit and truth will the innocent be protected and the illusion of innocence be perpetuated. As it should be.
Oh, and this lesson you speak of, please be more direct as it is unclear. (inserted here are two dots and a relaxed āUā that may indeed look like eyes and a mouth, smiling)
Sincerely, Boo
*She takes the flier and carefully tacks it up outside the gates in the docks area in hopes that she is being watched and Sir Martyr will find it.*

*Some days later, this letter is pinned to a tree in the Kohlingen Outskirts. Soon after, copies appear elsewhere, nailed to walls and drifting in the wind in and around Kohlingen.*
Sir Boo,
"You speak as if violence itself is a bad thing when in fact, when evil chooses the method good will answer in kind."
You speak as if good is a response to evil; but logically, who came first, the criminal or the lawmaker? Yes, truly, what in this land is the original sin, to break law or to make law? Was he not a fiend, he who out of nowhere decreed that other men should follow his laws or he would smite them down? And was he not a hero, he who first refused this submission and dared to oppose this tyranny of "good."
By your vain reply, it is evident to me, there is no true structure of logic supporting your asserted position on the moral highground. You are championing the causes of a thoroughly corrupt society which exacts its gruesome fates onto men and women alike; only that by clever manipulation, it has managed to create a system of economics and politics that guise these fates as if they are not manmade. As if your beggars and downtrodden are victims of natural disaster! As if there is none to hang.
Yes. Blindly, you trust the gods and their metaphysical rhetorics of "detect good" this and "protection from evil" that, yet there is no logic behind these positions, only propaganda. Only struggle for power. And in our realm, all that remains are knights in shining armor committing genocide on those who dare to live a life of great passion and great curiosity.
You shall answer for your crimes. The Jugde of Law

*Before Yaston destroys the text Alynne in visit to Kohl gets one and frowns* I couldn't care less for the words of the Gods, people who knows me know I am not a stronger follower of no one. Even if I am leaning towards Tempus dogma lately. So, yes, I see the Gods as intrusion on my life as well, I wish they didn't exist and our lives were our own. I wish people would stop threatening me with that dammed wall. But, it got anything to do with the goodness of the people this man is attacking. They do what they can do and if he try to hurt those people he will taste the steel of my blade.
*Angela as she reads the second note sighs sadly* Someone trying to poke us and anger us. May my Lord Ilmater take care of his heart before he try to act with violence. May his heart find peace in name of what is righteous and good. *she folds the note and put it on her pocket and continue in her way to heal one of the farm's child that had fallen sick*

*A message ist left outside the city, obviously for the author of the flyers*
To whom calls himself the Divine Martyr and Judge of Law,
it seems your soul is tortured with doubts, revealing a shattered faith in the gods and their divine nature. I advice you to seek out the women and men of faith in Kohlingen. You may tell us of your doubts and we shall speak of our faith and service to our gods and the people of the holy city. We are sure, a remedy of some sorts can be gained for your soul by sharing our wisdom and visions of the mortal existance. We glady aid you to find back to a peacefull life with faith in the gods of light and dedication to honor and law. We will listen to your concerns for the poor and innocents and address them, if we should find them correct and justified.

*Also before Yaston can destroy all the fliers Boo doing her part to keep litter around Kohlingen to a minimum finds one. She notices the writing and begins to read, immediately her giggle is heard. She finishes reading, still giggling. She finds a nice out of the way place to sit and with quill in hand turns over the flier to write.*
Dear Sir Martyr,
I will take no offence that you did not take the time to answer my questions for it seems you are spending a lot of time making so many copies of the same thing.
Though if you were watching as you mentioned in your last letter, you would have noticed that I am not a Sir. And may I advise you that when one addresses one as Sir it is the surname that follows so that it would have been Sir Shoo. Which would have meant that the reply meant for me would have found its way to my brother instead. Which would have also been a mistake for it should have been Lady Shoo. Which would have been confusing as there are currently four Lady Shoos in Kohlingen. So might I suggest that you consider addressing me as Lady Boo Shoo to avoid any further embarrassment on your part.
I was delighted to see that you had quoted me in your letter. Unfortunately, it went quite dizzily after that like a row boat with only one oar, it seems you are spinning in circles.
In answer to your questions: Logically the criminal came first. To break the law. No. No.
After careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that I am not vain. I do not have enough experience to truly boast of my deeds and prowess as the word vain would suggest.
Might I point out that if you are opposed to the laws currently in use in the fair city of Kohlingen you are under no obligation to enter. And I encourage you to speak with those in the Temple of Ilmater about the beggars and downtrodden that you are so passionate about.
As your signature on this letter would indicate it is you that seems to lust for power that you have cleverly discussed as great passion and great curiosity. The true meaning of logic has escaped you and it is your attempt at the cleaver manipulation of words in a vain attempt to change the truth. The truth is this, you will fail.
Sincerely, Boo
*She takes the flier and carefully tacks it up outside the gates in the docks area in hopes that she is being watched and Sir Martyr will find it.*

*New pamphlets are scattered across the lands of Kohlingen.*
Honorable Citizens of Kohlingen,
I ask you: wherein lies the difference between good and evil?
According to the traditional ideological commonplace, immortality is linked to good and mortality to evil: what makes us good is our awareness of immortality (of the Gods, of our soul, of the sublime ethical striving), whilst the root to evil is the resignation to our mortality (we shall all die, so it doesn't really matter, grab what you can, indulge your darkest whims). Or said in a different way, to be good is to live outside the moment; to think ahead, to rationally plan for future consequences; and to be evil is to give into temptation and indulge desires, to live in the moment. An evil man immediately feeds anger with violence, hunger with gluttony and lust with adultery. He eats unhealthy food (which taste good in the moment, but which wrecks his body over time), and he cheats and lies to his enemies and friends. All of these are actions that grants him short-sighted boons and satisfaction; but without fail, these choices will bring him misery in his later days. A good man understands that he is best served by investing in the long run. He tempers his desires with rational thought, and understands that to undermine humanity with immediacy is to bite the hands that feeds. Yes, does not the murderer sleep with a dagger under his pillow, in fear of vengeance; and does not the farmer wipe his brow with a content smile on his face at the end of the day? Thus, the difference between good and evil lies not in selfishness, but the dimension of time applied to the selfishness. This is not difficult to understand, even children know the meaning of the expression "one reaps what one sows."
The Knights of the Troika, however, turns this ideological commonplace around and wage the hypothesis that primordial immortality is that of evil. To them, evil is something that threatens to return forever, a spectral dimension that magically survives its physical annihilation and continues to haunt us. According to this doctrine, the victory of good over evil lies in the ability to die, to purge oneself of the taint of the world and to return to the innocence of nature. In their way of thinking, to be good is not to think ahead and plan for future consequences, as most people consider good. In fact, they encourage us not to think; not to ask questions. Blinded by religious zeal, they reduce good to obedience; obedience to the law and obedience to the gods. This is why, to their mind, the embodiment of evil is to be found in an undead lich, and the embodiment of good is to be found in the martyr. But we know this is wrong, and only believable to men whom have been poisoned by their lies. It is the martyr who gives into his vain desire to be seen as a hero, leaving behind all those who would rely on him; the lich does not live in the moment, but in eternalness, guilty of nothing else than disobedience towards corrupt gods. So who should we fear most, the lich or the obedient men of Kohlingen Keep? Surely, the lich will remain to reap what he sows over the eons; must he not be good? And is it not true that the most horrendous acts of humanity throughout history have all been justified by these dreaded words: "I was only following orders."?
In time, The Knights of the Troika shall have to answer for their lies.

*Angela collects one of these notes and again she sits calmly with the note on her lap and read it all meditating on the words*
Sir Disciple of Truth,
Many of your words are indeed in tone with the words of my Lord Ilmater. I have thought deeply about the letters you sent in your attempt to educate the Knights of the Triad. However, for more that I attempt to justify your words in the last letter, I cannot find a way to think it correct.
You accused us of being blinded by religious zeal, saying that such reduce good to obedience; obedience to the law and obedience to the gods. I took the liberty to copy some of your words. You then compare the good men that follow the triad laws and the command of their Gods with an undead Lich and you even dare to say that the Lich is better than those who obediently follow their God, because the Lich live forever while the martyr die and leave behind those who rely on them. Sir, have you really read those words before sending them out?
The laws of the Gods that form the Triad are to protect those who needs them, to set aside their own needs for food, lust, or any immediate or long term desire in order to do their work for the great good of all. To sacrifice our own health, belongs, family and personal attachments in name of others that need our help. If you suffer and you call for Lord Ilmater, my Lord will come to you and will help you in your worse hours. I will come to you and give all I can give, including my life to make your suffering at least bearable. What would a Lich do? It would survive with the suffering of the world, it would strip people from their lives to drink their blood and to rejoice on their suffering, not now, not tomorrow, but for eternity. For power they give up life, for power they inflict pain, suffering and torture to poor souls that should be in the protection of their Gods. How can you even compare?
Do you know the Dogmas of our Gods? I don't think you do. I think you believe in a truth, that is not our truth and that you are trying to confuse those that are not prepared to judge words with your erroneous judgments. I have found wisdom on your first letter, I have even kept a copy of it, but from that letter on, you have lost me with accusations that have no foundation on the good path of the Gods.
You ask on your letter, who who should we fear most, the lich or the obedient men of Kohlingen Keep? Surely, the lich will remain to reap what he sows over the eons; must he not be good? And is it not true that the most horrendous acts of humanity throughout history have all been justified by these dreaded words: "I was only following orders."?
The Lich will leave to reap everything, every good, every energy, every life, every blood, like a famine that never extinguish and that will always seek more and more power until he is the supreme being that he seeks to be, better even the the Gods themselves, all Gods. What a Lich wants Sir is to be a God and a Lich would kill the entire humanity if it could to achieve such power. What does the man in Kohlingen do? They follow supreme orders in spite of their immediate need, they will give up in life, food, shelter, protection and all to protect a single individual in need, because that is the demand of our Gods. They would fight the evil that try to bring suffering to this land, even if it cost them their lives, because that is the supreme order of their Gods.
How can you even compare? Your words are empty sir, and you lost the only person that were reading your words with the intention to learn. I even question if you are not a Lich yourself trying to dissuade the good people of this city with your wicked ways.
I honestly hope you are not and I honestly hope you find the peace of mind we all deserve.
Ilmater Blessings upon you Sir,
Angela Eire

*To the third and most recent letter, addressed to the population at large, Elisabeth does write a public response.*
What is goodness? To care about other people. What is evil? Selfishness. A good man can be wise or foolish, and an evil man can be patient or impatient in his designs.
To leave your coat at home because the sun is warm when you set out is shortsighted, but we do not call this evil. A miser ever thinks of the future when he goes without pleasures and denies charity to others, but we do not call such a person good. It is plainly apparent that the ability to plan ahead and what we call goodness are not the same.
It is true that wickedness is often folly. We and others have worked hard to ensure this: the law cannot force a man to care for the suffering others feel, but it can make it in his own selfish interest not to hurt others. But to claim that therefore folly and wickedness are the same thing is to make an error of logic.
~Elisabeth Hayes, for the Knights of the Triad
