Just thought this topic may be stimulating.\

Anything to share?

Examples: Leaders of guilds, Favores, Good storytelling RP, or dramatic changes in one's Character from a DM pc or event

Concerning the "Leaders of Guilds" part, I never really understood why some frown upon DMs leading factions with their PCs. In fact, I'd prefer it to some extent. We all, or most of us at least, trust the DMs with the power they have, so why's that different when it comes to Factions?

On another DM influence subject, seeing people change their RP the second a DM is around, makes me cry. A lot. Think emo who hit himself over the hand with a hammer. Really.

What exactly are you trying to initiate discussion on? The stuff you mentioned is quite variable. It's like asking "Ever had a drink with a class B-celebrity?"

If I had to take a guess, it's probably because of their positions OOCly that they don't like running factions. Accusations of favoritism, etc, just aren't worth the hassle. People tend to change their tune when something happens for a DM's faction and not theirs, or the DM's faction gets a privilege that another didn't, etc. In the past, as well, there were problems stemming from one instance of it.

IMO people look down on DMs leading factions since it goes more to hurt feelings that the "big kids" are taking the spots that are open for anyone. When its said that players can lead factions and all the factions are being lead by the DM team, it looks like a bad image for some people.

I know while I was a new player and when I finally learned who all the DMs were and nearly all of the characters that were in high authority or power, were DMs, it left a bad first image on me until I got meet them all. All DMs are normal players too, we just sacrifiece play time (and RL *cough*) to help keep a stable fun enviroment.

As for DMs effecting players RP. I sure do hope people don't RP with me because they know I am a DM or feel nervous to RP with me because they know I am. If I can be so bold to say as well, DMs do not equal the greatest/best RPers. I sure know that I am not, and I would like to clear any of that up. Im not on the DM team to make others feel less or insignificant. In fact I hope to be inspired by and help inspire others RP.

If the only reason you RP with me is because I'm a DM, I politely ask you to rethink why you RP with me.

If not? You're fine.

*shrugs* I'm too used to playing with DMs...not from this server but another.

It's a mixed thing. On the one hand, sometimes it initiates really interesting events, sometimes it's -for- events since otherwise the DMs didn't really get on their PCs much. In one case it was uncomfortable since you are aware that this is a person that can ban you if they feel you've taken an infraction a bit too far.

That or you play a PC that develops (as per that PCs personality) into the most glorious arse walking but ticks off the DMs both ICly and OOCly to the point of being largely persecuted.

Thanks to hanging out on Annakolia loooooong before I knew Amia existed, I'd like to think it gave a better perspective into the simple reality that a DM coming around is like dropping Ink in water RP-wise.

It's going to change the water but it's never going to be either ink or water again. It's altered. Like privates chilling out and relaxed then a Sergent showing up and saying 'at ease men'. Depending on that sergeant, the privates either know they can relax or get stiff. (dirty minded ones, *whaps*)

Again...that can be a good thing or a bad thing. I guess it just depends on the RPers.

There's several reasons for this.

First of all, we think it's nice to spread the power among the players and not just focus it on the DMs. We got enough power as it is, we don't need more.

Secondly if and when a DM led faction gains advantage over another, PC led faction, someone will cry foul, without exceptions. We generally do not like to shut people down and be tyrants in these matters, even if we know they're full of bullshit. It's very hard to disprove a claim "Your faction gained advantage because you're a DM!" without ruining the plot by giving out OOC information, so that's another thing.

Simply put: it's a lot less hassle overall not to have DMs as faction leaders.

The best way I see to deal with a DM in game is to look at the character and only see the character, try to forget all you know about the player and concentrate in understanding the role that player chose to follow in game. You can oocly speak with friends in tells, but all relations with a character should be done character/character. So, if there is a reason to RP with a character, doesn't matter if that person is or is not a DM, you RP with that character. If there is none, so don't.

And Mahtan, I think Puff is very inspiring. He is one of my favorite characters in Amia.

Fine, fine, point taken. I figured that by having a PC of mine lead a faction, but only in an OOC sense to organize and arrange and not in an IC way to compete with you would be satisfactory. Should've known better.

 Tad passive aggressive there...

I think it is unfair, though. If my PCs want to try and climb the ladders of drow society, then it is a bummer knowing that there is no point in even reaching for the top, because since I became a DM people might cry foul. I guess it is just the way it is, and I'm not that friggin power-hungry, but it makes me put ooc restrictions on my player-side rp. (I'm stuck with a 6 months old Zhaunin (mage's apprentice), but that's just fun.)

I have never, to the best of my (admittedly feeble) recollection, had a DM initiate an 'event' while I was RPing with their character. I have on occasion received DCs from DMs who were logged on as their regular characters but in 'DM mode', which makes me a bit uncomfortable as that is not why I do it in the first place. Generally, if I see a DM PC or hear a shout regarding an event, I will deliberately avoid them if the interaction is not directly relevant to my PC at the time so as to negate any suggestion (to myself as well as anyone else) that I am RPing to get DCs or goodies.

That being said, there are a few DM PCs and DM-run NPCs that I will approach because I either enjoy RPing with those characters or I am looking for something (ICly) from them. Yossarin, Diane Arbor, Jud'Vardas, Erik Tarvencia, Chiania Windleaf, Ca'stine de'Linal, Cerridywn, Sabast Khunefer and occasionally Vyashir Indrire, Puff Shadowflame, Earylduil, Gwaelas or Lyle Torrowfire are on that list (fair warning, you guys!).

It's something that I'm always aware of in the back of my mind.

To me, there is not difference in player characters, wether DM, developer, or regular player played ones, if they're fun to RP with they're fun to RP with. I enjoy fun RP. Thats it. Whatever goes on IC is IC, and OOC is OOC.

That is the most accurate description of how I feel, concerning the RP.

Oh, and I should probably clarify that while I, in some ways would prefer DMs to run factions, at least on an OOC level, I think the best thing would be if everyone was equal in respects to top spots, DM or not. But then again, my attitude on this matter, as in many others, is that people need to stop being whiney little shizzleheads, stop crying favorism, and just play the damn game.

Odd that it took such a strangely negative turn. Hmm....and Xavi, didn't mean on here hon. Was referring to another one where usually the DMs just logged in for Events. Most of the time they worked on the server to keep it running or manned NPCs for Events or mini-events and let the players interact with the world they made.

I guess Amia is lucky that it has so many DMs that they can do both work and play.

As for DMs leading factions, as long as they're under the same rules as PC lead ones (ie, activity, RP events+interaction, etc) then run with that crown!!

This. I've RPd with a few DMs as their PCs and to be completely honest I couldn't give a damn they were DMs at the time - they were just another character that my character was interacting with, and it was fun.

No, no, in fact, we're here to rui nyour RP and forever change your view on everything, here to gobble up all the IC positions just like we do OOCly and make sure you're all under our (my) iron thumb.

Silly.

I don't really have problems with DM's altering my RP here because I don't know people here well enough yet to know who is and isn't a DM. I just go with the flow, its funner than actually trying to plan what is going to happen. Plans never go the way I want them to, not plans always do. :P

And of course DMs are not normal people...only insane people are willing to become a DM...I know because I used to be one in another time and place.

*shrugs*

there are people I go out of my way to play with, and people I go out of my way to not. If you were one of the people I like to play with, and then become a DM, then horray! one of the people i like to play with is a DM! Anyway, I have no qualms with DMs running factions. In fact, i've seen DMs be elevated from faction leadership to DM a few times. I think they put in a ton of time and effort, and go past what is expected of normal players.

In fact, I dont really think i'd care if there was some favoritism among the DM staff, because if you ask me they kind of deserve it *shrug* but I think i'm alone with this opinion.

I have no problem with DM's showing me favouritism. Shower me with DC's, oh great Lords of Amia! :P

Just shower them whilst dmside. I *detest* getting dc's from dm's who are on their pc's, even though i used to do it myself when i was dm, and i fully understand (and agree with) the concept that it shouldn't matter whether they are dmside or pcside, as if you deserve the dc, you should get it.

But that doesn't make me feel any less uncomfortable when I *do* get one from a dm on their pc.

Hmm.. yes I think DC's are the main altering factor here.

I notice a lot of people will relax their RP and not say/emote much IC, and then suddenly perk up and start RPing when they realise a DM is about.

Kind of like sitting up straight when the teacher walks around the classroom with gold stickers to hand out for the best behaved kids.

But in this case, the gold stickers are DC's. :P

I dunno... I rather like icing-less cake myself. But I suppose that's besides the point ^.^

There are plenty of people who run big name factions that aren't DMs. Look at the Grove, the Shrine, the Banites, The Mystrians, etc.

To be honest, I don't think I could really recognize too many of the DM's PC's. I know Tormak has Torin..... and I know Tranny and Signe's drow characters of course. But I don't think I could name any others even if I tried. I very well could have RP'd with them for hours before and not even known it.

When I realize that a DM is watching over a RP session, though, I don't change my character's style or anything like that, but I do tend to emote a little more. Not because I'm trying to squeeze in that extra bit for a DC, but because I've seen what happens when DM's think a player has gone AFK. I'm not too fond of the thought of wearing a bright pink suit.

Shrine is kinda a bad example, as is Mystra's... as was the Grove for awhile... I'd pick the Kohlingen factions. Or the Black Flag.

Simply put, it's an unfair advantage.

It's much easier to keep secretecy, intiate DM run quests, and get approval for certain actions, when a DM leads a faction. I think most people cannot deny that part of the reason certain factions have remained secert or in power, is because a DM exerts an influence that stops other players from abusing rules or meta-gaming.

It's much easier to run a guild when your a DM. No doubt.

Oh, and then there is the whole "Unconcious biased opinion" thing, accidential abuse of power or such. Always a threat, and always a possability, no matter the person.

Wut!? :o Am I so soon forgotten in the drow dominion? :(

Seriously though, I rather like the fact that people rarely realize who I am in game, until they've RPed with me. After I've made a fair first impression, it doesn't seem to matter at all whether they know I'm a DM or not.

So just a request: when there's new folks in the party, don't call me Iron. Let them figure it out after they get to know me as a player. ;)

As for giving DCs playerside, I don't really do it anymore. I'll sooner ask someone else to DC my company on the DM channel if it's really worth it, and even then I rarely do it if it's just the hanging out with people I know. Occasionally, I might DC new players I've interacted with, if there's no one on the DM channel. Oftentimes, though, they don't even realize where they got the DC from.

I wish DMs could affect your daily RP more. We can't be in very tight control of the story because we're not always (or even often) present like a PnP DM would be, but I do wish players asked for more NPC interaction. And by this, I don't necessarily mean epic quests but rather daily interaction with local NPCs, small things to make the world seem a bit more alive. Surprising folks with unrequested NPC interaction is well and good too, though not often does one get an excellent opportunity to do that.

You last paragraphs are certainly true. (I don't subscribe to your theory on DM leadership being what's kept any current factions in power, though.) There are risks involved in, well, everything. In this matter, the risks aren't deemed great enough to impose a complete ban on such practice. DMs aren't required to toss IC out of the window and drop all their faction RP when they join the team, and it's quite possible they will continue to lead factions. Even ascend to such a position later on. It's not a taboo, though it's not really the favoured situation, particularly in case of large factions. The definition of a faction is pretty vague, though: if Kalliniel was to train a next generation of bladesingers and form a special unit, that would be somewhat of a faction, and he would definetely take the leadership position as the senior bladesinger. I don't think that's out of line.

It's a matter of taste. We generally try not to have DM PCs in authoritan positions in large factions because of various reasons. However, I don't condemn someone who is able to pull off DMing and managing his or her own faction at the same time, and unwilling to let OOC take the stage from RP. We're not just DMs, we're also players.

It's a mixed bag of issues and situations. Can't really make a blanket statement about it, IMO.

Would you accuse even a former DM leading a faction of the same malicious abuse of power?

I've noticed DM pc's take their times with plots, preparations, and have tons of supporting RP before any event happens related to them or their faction.

More oft than not I've seen player requests that get denied ask for things that have no or little supported RP. Not only that but they want it now just how they ask for it too, just because they have DCs.

Some folk tend to think that they can shortcut by writing a clever story that they are entitled to what they want by the mere fact of collecting those shiny coins. And in doing so the DMs are thereby compelled to make that player a giant self-ego masturbation session, some would call it an 'event' when its more of a 'Scripted production' where they are forced to be mere puppet masters because 'You have the DCs'.

If I were a DM, I'd be far more compelled by a request for an event, if it were to go more about this:

My PC has done such and such weeks/months of supporting RP, and this is leading him to such and such conclusion. He wants now to summon this demon and attempt to make a deal with it for the super-powerful arcane artifact500b to set his plan in motion, with him hoping ultimately to discover his super secret spell technique for making a sentient hat.

What this does is enable a situation to unfold. A story to happen. not a play to happen.

I like stories, and randomness in RP. Dictated outcomes suck for improvisational creativity, which is what RP really is, it really is limiting, the surprise is the fun to me.

I do kinda doubt a dm misusing his position as a member of the team would go unnoticed by the rest of the geeks we got taking care of us.

Before the fur starts fying, I'll just toss my 2 cents in.

RPing with DM's Playerside. - So what, they're another person...
RPing with DM possessed NPC's - So what, it's another person...

I say person, because every character in the world, from Signe's Qilstreaa, to NPC beggar Martin, to Tordek Bloodbeard (not a DM char), to that goblin whose head I just cleaved in twain is a not a toon/npc/characte/player.

That is a person in character - and that's it.

I know out of character that NPC Martin is probably giving out plot info, and that Qilstreea might be limited out of character but.... if in character I do not know NPC Martin is harbouring a terrible secret, and that Qilstreea is anything more than inadept at her art then I DON'T KNOW - and I will not go over to the NPC, just because the previously silent creature starts talking because a DM has given him the breath of real intelligence for awhile if theres no IC cause for me to.

Meh, signing off before I spend a whole dollar instead.

I have before and will continue to do so. Just ask Nekh.

Also, I noticed Iron's comment about "favored situations" and would like to toss my own opinion out on that, and I suppose vs. Nekh's too.

Favored situations re: factions and faction leaders? There isn't one. There is no preference to having a DM ,ex DM, Dev, Designer, Player, or Tester leading a faction. It's just the character leading a faction ICly. I don't "prefer" DMs or players running factions. I don't make assumptions based on OOC position.

So I must ask Iron and Nekh...

Even ascend to such a position later on. It's not a taboo, though it's not really the favoured situation, particularly in case of large factions.

What *is* the favored solution, and why? I almost feel like I'm treading dangerously close to "Reverse Racism" here.

This. The problem is,though, that people think they see abuse and cry wolf when it is simply the DMs RPing the situation to their advantage, just like any other PC has the ability to do.

Very funny topic; Emo kid hit with hammer analogy for RP changing when DM's are around is hilarious. Tormak 'Ironthumb' Sabre was pretty funny.

Why not let 'them', people who are DM's, be IC heads of factions? DMs spend much of their on-line time watching RP; I'd assume that that is relatively dull when all you do is watch. This and building little items we request for our on-line time, or tweaking and fixing things that enhance 'our' on-line experience.

Credit where credit's due I think; if the player base is willing to let DMs do all that work, and much of it would feel like work('Ironthumb' Sabre excluded of course) then they should be able to reap the benefits. People don't become DM's if they are bad at role-playing games, and I'm sure we all think the DM team has shown this many times over.

Realistically it is very conceited to say that DMs are fit do do all of the shit kicking jobs and then deny their suitability for what are generally some of the cooler jobs. It's not like they are unqualified for christ's sake.

I think I can sum up my thoughts thusly:

I know the DM team to be fair here, human minding but fair.

Thusly, if a DM is suitable and accepted ICly to lead a faction, so be it. If they can find a Player to lead that suits better then they, even better.

It is the call of the various factions to decide who leads them, save only in the most dire of circumstances.

Sorry, the sarcasm was intended to be ironic humor and appeared to fail. No offense intended, I found the 'under my iron thumb' thing in you post amusing. Again ironically amusing, not snide 'that rings true' amusing.

Well, this topic's apparently taking a dive away from the original topic - that being the alteration of one's behavior, IC or OOC, when the DM staff is around. Here's my two cents, take it or leave it:

Whether a character is a faction leader or not is based off of IC events, not OOC. Thus, a DM having a Faction leadership position is from that DM's playerside roleplay. Subsequently - factions tend to attain these leaders in two ways (at least, two that I've observed):

1.) They created the faction (IC and OOC) and, as such, assumed the role as leader. This is only natural, because the process is the exact same when a player creates a faction.

2.) They ascended into their leadership role through IC events, usually being the chosen leader of that faction by the prior faction leader or its current members.

Both of these are totally legitimate ways to attain power. How can I say that? Because they got them as players - not as DMs. Roleplay, backstory, planning, effort, energy, time; all these things were put into the guild/faction/group and the roles of its members, even their leader.

And, just as a side note: DMs have no "unfair advantage" in any way, shape, or form. Honestly, I'd say that it is the players who have the unfair advantage, being able to shirk any responsibilities we have, drop characters and their ongoing roleplay, switch roles, and have generally complete freedom with zero repercussions for anything we do (as long as those actions remains within server rules).

The DMs, on the other hand, have to maintain stories/plots/events, not to mention create said events, maintain consistent characters (generally the NPCs they frequently govern), sacrifice their playing time, continually be at the beck and call of a playerbase which generally seems to lack the sort of appreciation they deserve (and who rarely gives them the credit and respect they deserve), and in the end, shovel the proverbial sh*t we the players hand them (see: 'He metagamed! She exploited! He harassed me! She cybered! I need attention! NOW DAMNIT!').

I like my Player Hat, thank you.

It is not easy to find active and dedicated faction leaders. Therefore, we should be glad there are DMs who are willing to dedicate themselves to a faction and DMing. That is pure masochism.

A agree fully. If someone is willing to dedicate their Amia time to running a faction properly, who cares who it is. Player, DM, male, female, American, Japanese, Armenian, German, English, Mexican, Spanish, who the hell cares. Dedication is all that matters and it's a hard thing to find in a faction leader.

I think this describes the current situation best. Preferably a PC (DMs are busy enough as it is), but we won't go mental on a DM. In the end good results are more important than ideology, I hope. It's how I think anyway.

I do think that the F-word inspires reverse discrimination, though.

As for the favoured solution... I think factions should ideally have active and dedicated PC leaders. Spreading the power among more people than DMs is good, it lets us to focus on entertaining more people than just our own faction.

Plus, it means DMs won't be nannying players in every aspect. We do it enough as it is, players should have responsibility over other things, such as factions.

I'm guilty.

I frequently check the messenger page while playing and recognize some DM's player account names as well. If I see them in game, I will most likely emote something slightly more elaborate than the *nods* that other random people would have gotten.

Why? Maybe curiosity. Maybe because they are celebrities. Maybe the hope for nice RP. Maybe getting them to know OOCly.

What I've learned from the few times I met DMs as players: They're people, too. ICly, OOCly, they're quite normal ... Took me some time to realize that.

I"ll still try to be a good RPer when "they" are around and others try to behave as well, I believe. That isn't such a bad thing, imho.

Regards, Ts

I refer to my post above there about having a drink with a class B celebrity.

We got a nice proverb for this in Finnish. Everyone knows the monkey but the monkey knows no one. Everyone who speaks to you knows you, but you don't have a clue who they are and whether you should know them or not and why are they trying to be friendly with you.

Anyway, why don't you (and not just singular you) also try to be on your best behaviour and RP when DMs are not around? Doing that would sure make the game more enjoyable to everyone. You might even end up as a monkey yourself, when people notice you're cool to be around with.

I don't have a strong preference one way or another. To avoid the swamp of "ifs", "buts" and complicated situations, let's just take a very basic example:

Player A and DM B both have a PC suitable for leading faction C: a large faction with two years of history in game, a faction area and 15 more or less active members. PC A and PC B have rather equal justification to lead the faction. Player A and DM B are both known to be reliable and active players. There will be no retconning or implausible leaps of logic involved no matter which of them assumes faction leadership.

Under the above conditions, I think it's preferred that Player A assumes faction leadership instead of DM B, so as to spread fun and responsibility to a wider audience - even assuming DM B has as much time to contribute as Player A, (s)he still has control over entire cities and armies of NPCs. It seems more fair to let Player A run the faction.

It's way more complicated in reality, of course, whatwith conflicting IC motives, support of the faction members, activity issues etc. That's why I can't really say much about the matter in reality. Hypothetically, if every other factor was identical between two players, I would opt for the player to run a faction instead of the DM.
