is RP stats enforced? as in, if your human Fighter has 9 INT can he still be smart? if he has 10 WIS can he have moments of wisdom and reflection? or do you absolutely HAVE to play by the statsistics? just wanted to get this cleared up.

I dunno I think you should try to play them but I've never heard of it being enforced. No one else can see your stats save the DM's and like..store NPC's would be effected but...I dunno..

As far as enforced I don't think so, though.

You can min-max your character but you shouldn't lift and throw a giant off the mountains with 9 STR or teach a class of students about the Weave with 9 INT. Common sense.

I suppose the DMs take stat roleplay into account when handing out Dream Coins though.

I haven't seen them enforced, but I don't have the time to argue why the should / shouldn't be.

I would just say use common sense. When you are making your charter your beginning stats incorporate in his rp. For an example my toon has 6cha and 8wisdom. So he is a very antisocial person who forgets names a lot and directions as well of telling people things. The mental stats are an easy way to add interesting rp.

Yeah, personally I try to play out my ability scores and other feats as much as possible. It makes the characters much more interesting!

For example, Ly'thiel has 8 CHA. This is totally reflected in his manner and way of treating other people. Most people who don't know him well think he's an asshole.

Low intelligence characters may not be the sort who contribute to games of riddles, or sum numbers in their head. I don't remember who it was, but someone was playing a low-INT merchant character who was incredibly fun to RP with. (Sorry! >.>) One of my characters was trying to sell him goods in bulk, and he RP'd calculating it out on a scroll... a very, very long scroll.

Point is, the ability scores really make the basis of a character's strengths and flaws. And those two things play a big part in the nature of your characters and how they will interact with the world around them.

Never actually seen them enforced. But I think it's a common perception amoung Rpers on any server that your attributes effect who or what your character is. So you do Rp them.

Can't imagine playing a half orc with 7 int and calling him smart.

I love when there's an Ability Score that's low as possible. I've done 40 INT/8 WIS and 40 WIS/8INT...

It's not mandatory to RP it, I think, but it can be very fun to. Like when the super-smart wizard thinks something is "for the best" and it turns out it wasn't the wisest option in dealing with said problem. It's difficult with Wis/Int, though, since sometimes it takes a little bit of thought to determine which stat would best apply to a situaiton, but perhaps I just read into things too much. A curse I will gladly take!

It also boils down to debate about what individual ability scores represent. My Salandran has 20-something wisdom to represent her connexion to her deity, not the wisdom itself.
Further to that effect, I'm looking at the old TSR AD&D book I picked up at St Vinnie's and it shows ability scores and sub-ability scores:
Str:
-Stamina
-Muscle
Dex:
-Aim
-Balance
Con:
-Health
-Fitness
Int:
-Reason
-Knowledge
Wis:
-Intuition
-Willpower
Cha:
-Leadership
-Appearance

The one in yellow is the one I see debated most often.

That's the hardest, if not impossible, to RP imo, some people just flock to certain people.

You also have problems when your character is smarter/wiser/more charismatic than you are yourself.

The only reason to not RP one's ability scores is to do a complete power build. The ability scores your PC has are not random - you chose them at character creation and while leveling up. They are as much a part of your PC as his class. You -could- conceivably RP your fighter as a wizard if you wanted, but you would be (rightfully) laughed at for doing so.

On an RP server, why would you -not- RP your ability scores?

Oh, I get it... it's a RP restriction, Maaaaaaaaaaaan.

Or, once more, to be incapable - I'm nowhere near as perceptive as a 40-wis cleric should be, as smart as a 40-int wizard or as charismatic as a 40-cha bard.

Aye. Another problem is how to RP a char with a high lore score!

I have a character with 100+ Lore modifier. It is very difficult to RP even a fraction of that knowledge. But I do a lot of looking-up, and Lore-searching so I can be as true to that score as possible.

Hahaha... ahhh.... Good stuff, good stuff. :D

But, in all seriousness, I totally agree. I -hate- seeing people trying to play a character that has an impressive vocabulary when they themselves don't. It's just... bad... just don't do it. I know there are a lot of foreign people (to the English language I mean) and I understand that. But why would you want to play someone with a huge vocab when you have a very basic understanding of the language? And then of course, there are those who are natives to the tongue but just aren't really the brightest bulb on the chandelier. Too much? Too insensitive? Sorry... I know... I'm an ass. ::Shrug::

The charismatic one is equally as puzzling. But I recon that's a hell of a lot easier to pull off.

I watched a merchant PC do some good RP a few days back. I checked the character sheet, and noticed 8 Int. I didn't give that PC a DC, and never will for any RP that doesn't portray the character as an idiot. So yeah, we don't exactly enforce any specific portrayal of your stats, but we don't necessarily grant you DCs, rebuilds or other requests if you're really out there.

Apart from the obvious, it's pretty much a matter of taste. Particularly when it comes to high ability scores, not so much the low ones. 10 is average and 18 is as high as humanely possible. Beyond that, you step into the superhuman realm. Not everyone wants to play a super hero, though. Personally, I don't really play my stats above 18: if you've got 18 charisma, you're about as influential and impressive as you get, and anything above that is just mechanical boons that can be role-played as magical prowess or strong faith, rather than ever-improving personal presence. Same goes for strength: you can't very well play an effective WM without lots of strength, but I don't think you have to RP your superhuman strength if you don't want to. I mean, your average buffed WM should be able to lift a truck like it was nothing. But that's not very fun, so you don't have to play it like that. Not to mention Intelligence: if 18 is as smart as you get on Earth, it would be quite impossible to comprehend the mind of someone with 38 Int.

I also like to think there are many factors within a single stat. A character with low Constitution can either be very frail, sickly or in a horrible shape. Not necessarily all of them. An elven damsel with low HP might be frail and get hurt easily, but she still might have the fitness to run around forest glades without the need to catch her breath. Similarly, a sturdy tavernkeeper (with high Con) might never be sick and he could take quite a few hits in a brawl, but he'd still collapse if he had to run for a mere mile.

Can't really think of any universal guidelines that apply to everyone, but you should be fine as long as you remain reasonable.

That's why the AD&D I listed has con separated into Health and Fitness (although how that's different to Stamina, which is str, I have no idea).

I must admit I'm being a bit cheeky with Pare; his good side is arguably working at more than 10INT and certainly more than 8WIS, so I'm calling him the sum of his sides.

His evil side can't read and doesn't understand a lot of the words his good side uses, but he does speak in full Common, so I guess he's 9. That would let his good side get to 11.

For WIS, that totally works; Evil Pare's a complete arse.

This is a tricky one, Jess has crap Charisma and Wisdom but a reasonable Intelligence. I try to RP this as a poor understanding of not so much what to say as when to say it. That and a poor understanding of wider social impacts; telling someone that you have a 'really great plan' without considering that excluding them may make them cross, saying that it makes sense to kill someone without attempting to discern another 'persons' feelings towards it.

So, Jess might be ok to stand up and yap about how great it is to gamble for example, but to then destroy any chance of repeat performance by mocking someone who loses to her is not unheard of. That and making up nicknames that may or may not be offensive. Petty things like Wingy (for a customer with wings), Frog Face(for a Kobold) or Skeletor(for a Pale Master).

Comments like that are not Charismatic or Wise, but by the same token these stats do not preclude me from social RP like selling, haggling or even lieing. Worth noting that most successful con artists(they sell mobile phones) are ugly and bad smelling but smart enough to give a simple answer when a complex one is not needed.

My 30 INT/8 WIS/8 CHA wizard is close to autism/asperger's. In theory at least. I fail to play that properly on way too many occassions ... And later on I read that elves hardly ever have mental problems. So that became my excuse for being almost normal quite often. ;)

A certain ex-DM was known to RPly persecute people (in a good way, I mean) who had 'beautiful' or 'stunning' or 'sexy' or words to that effect in their bio but with 6-8 Cha on the character sheet.

Myself, I confess to having a high Int and a low Wis. Xaviera is the opposite. I try to RP the high Wis as best I can and I attribute her vocabulary to a way of talking that she learned in order to appear more cultured than her actual background. Though at times her true origins show through.

That sorts of reminds me of something else that happened to me, something good ;)

Tryed to Con someone into paying Niya so she could identify something. (0 Lore) She totally would've made stuff up.

And yes, she is one of those 6 charisma tieflings who looks stunning *rolls eyes*, but just watch her go and talk, all this crazyness, randomness, to alienate people.

Better stop here or it turns into 'This is my justification for Rping her low charisma..' bla bla rant <.<

My other chars, heh, my Drow Sorceress, stunningly beautyful, rather smart (16 int) but only 8 wis.
She does tend to get sidetracked a lot when explaining things, and use a lot of big words when she is not sure herself what they mean.

The others, heh, Raize. he deserved his 6 charisma, he his opponents, that was waaay back then. And he was antisocial, he still doesn't gets people.

Isen has lowish int (10) and high wis (will be base 20 soon), but over the years I have gradually increased how I play his intelligence. I feel like due to his high wisdom, he has learnt the appropriate way to react when things come up, owing it to experience rather than intelligence.

He also has very low base CON (8 ) although he tries to muscle through anything which could be a problem for him with his (soon to be 25) base str.

Know, knot malapropisms sow much. It's a bit more than just that. More like bad wording that doesn't make sense and/or is difficult to decipher.

I'm known for my malapropisms myself. It usually happens if I'm not thinking enough about what I'm writing or I'm typing too fast. The common ones for me are: their/there, your/you're and to/too. I find myself correcting that in my writing pretty often. >.>

Than/then used to get by me all the time too. Not so much anymore.

---------------------------------------------

I try to RP my abilities the best I can. My only not so smart character is Benki. He's pretty wise though. He's been trying to learn Common for about a year or two IG time and he's still really bad... -really- bad.

I only have one character that's -really- smart, but that character hides it so that people don't suspect what the character is really about.

Tu'jol is my only sexy character. She has 16 CHA, base. She's a decent leader once she's past her shyness, but it mostly represents her looks and openness to the opinions of her peers (a part of being a good leader I suppose).

Based on my understanding, 8-10 is average for a human so just having 10 doesn't make you much dumber than the average joe.

Unless the stat is on the range of 4-7, you probably wouldn't have to RP anything different than an average person. Unless you are trying to complete splits on oiled 4 cm pipes, having 8-10 dex probably won't come up.

I have my 6 INT but 26 WIS orc. He can't speak common save a few 100 words and is generally the stereotypical dumb orc. But being wise, he usually avoids getting into trouble (PvPs) and bad decision (being tricked to do something evil) even though he doesn't know it.

My low WIS chars usually are the troublemakers and they don't usually recognize it until their face is on the floor.

Sad to say an 8 INT orc of mine has UMD, it feels dirty and I should probably rebuild him... What do you guys think of low INT (6 or 8) characters that have UMD?

My first thought is that UMD is based on Charisma, not Intelligence. My second thought is that it can only be taken by specific classes, representing training (or natural ability, or whatever it is) that is not available to anyone.

Because of those things, I think that ranks in UMD are "justified" simply by having them, unless you went out of your way to make it inappropriate for your character. (Like, the equivalent of having high Spellcraft on your character sheet but roleplaying not knowing !@#$ about spells.)

Sorry... I know... I'm an ass.

I actually haven't seen this to my knowledge, but I think it would be amusing. Are we talking humorous malapropisms here?

I love those ... don't get 'formication' (the feeling of insects on or under the skin) mixed up with anything else, unlike a certain Australian Government ant-drug site >.>

Personally, I believe ability scores do have nice crossover - I character with low int but high wis can certainly make a good show at looking intelligent, and all of that sort of stuff is explained in some more detail in the PHB.

Aye true, true. The reason I'm feeling a bit flimsy on a low int char with UMD is that they could use scrolls. Aren't the magic scrolls written in some ancient language or something?

I'd more likely compare it to how an 8 or less INT Sorcerer casts spells.

Hmm, interestingly enough, I actually do that with two characters. They don't have low intelligence, just average intelligence, but still. They make a good show at seeming to be pretty bright. But, at the same time, they also have their moments where you realize it's mostly intuition and things that come with years and years of understanding through life experience and such (wisdom) and not so much that they have Wizard brains.

Can I find that passage online anywhere? It sounds interesting.

@ Gunz:
I have no idea, I would presume you can, but I've typed up a brief summary elsewhere ... I'll find it:

PHB:

Quote:
A smart character ... is curious, knowledgeable, and prone to using big words

High Int - Low Wis = absentminded or lacking common sense
High Int - Low Cha = know-it-all or reclusive
High Int - Low Cha and Wis = constantly putting foot in mouth

Quote:
A character with high Wisdom may be sensible, serene, "in tune," alert or centred.

High Wis - Low Int = aware but simple
High Wis - Low Cha = "power behind the throne" style person
Hgh Wis - Low Cha and Int = uncouth and unsophisticated

Quote:
A character with high Charisma may be attractive, striking, personable, and confident

High Cha - Low Int = can pass off as knowledgeable until someone smart arrives
High Cha - Low Wis = popular, but doesn't know who real friends are
High Cha - Low Wis and Int = shallow and unaware of others' feelings

That's a brief summary.

Truth be told, I don't pay too much attention to how Int and Wis relate to eachother. Wisdom seems like a silly stat anyhow; it's not an inherent quality. Splitting personality into three parts (Int, Wis, Cha) seems rather crude and not very interesting to RP. I simply assume Int and Wis support eachother and a low Wis can mostly be offset with a high Int. It still manifests in some ways, but not as severely. (8-Wis-Kalliniel can be inconsistent and impatient, but he is still very introspective and philosophical, for example.)

And I'm sure I'll be labeled as one of those "powerbuilders" now, but it's a fact that classes are strongly biased towards certain personality types, and that's boring. It's quite unfair that a Charismatic person either has to waste a bunch of ability points on something with no mechanical benefit, or play a Sorc, Bard, Cleric, Paladin or BG. Likewise, if you want to play a wise and introspective WM (let's make it Dex-based Bard/WM, requiring hefty Str, Dex, Int, Cha and Con), you basically have to severely damage your build or stick with 8-10 Wis.

Yeah, you can say "that's RP" but it's not very fair. The mechanical aspect of the game isn't balanced, and including personality and mental capability as a feature that grants some classes massive power and does nothing for others was a bad idea from a RP-PoW. Fighters have no choice but to play the part of the dumb brute (or clever, but short-sighted and blunt like those 13-Int WMs) or settle with being worse fighters than those idiots. It's silly, because how much muscle you have should be unrelated to how smart you are.

That's why I wouldn't put too much emphasis on mental stats. I'm still going to RP Kalliniel as a philosopher and a historian, even if I can't fit decent Wisdom into his build. It's hardly my fault that he needs decent modifiers in every other stat. I do try to do something to portray his low Wisdom now and then, but there shouldn't be just one option, a trait shared by everyone with low Wisdom. That wouldn't be role-playing, that would be looking it up in a manual and mimicking.

To be honest, for al my chars their stats have represented who they are, with one exception that I find follows Iron's opinion.
I am inclined to agree with him, but I would ask:
What do those people who sacrifice build for RP get when those who don't still gain all the benefits?

Too bad? We tend to forget that the mechanics are there first and foremost as a means to define combat. People who choose to create builds not suited for combat should truly expect not to be at par with one who did build for it.

Like you say, it's a sacrifice.

I am not talking about combat benefits - I'm talking about an 8 wis, 8 int, 8 cha character being perfectly acceptable to be debating the nature of philsophy and that sort of thing.

Sorry, kinda went off the wrong tangent. In any case, I don't think it's perfectly acceptable. Like Iron said, we shouldn't put *too much* emphasis on mental stats since it's virtually impossible to appropriately quantify them.

To quote Iron again...
